PostPosted: Sun Dec 09, 2018 1:01 pm    Post subject: Anyone a fan of 80's and 90's music of all kinds?

I'm 36 and for the last month, have been on a mission listening to some of my favorite jams as a kid in the 80's and teen in the 90's. I loved all music, pop, rap, gangster rap, alternative, ska, metal, jazz, even TV show themes. It's been giving me some insane nostalgia.

I literally loved everything from Tupac, Biggie and Eazy E, to Madonna, Whitney Houston, Salt N' Pepa, and Michael Jackson, to Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Greenday. Men at Work, Limahl (Never ending story), Jon Secada, Duran Duran, The Cars, Hall and Oats, etc. etc. etc. Heck, I was even a fan of some of those Nsync, Backstreet and 98 degrees songs.

Anyone else as big of a fan of this generation of music as I am? I just can't find myself connecting to this era of music as I did back then, and I'm sure most people say that about their specific generation of music, I'm specifically referencing 80's and 90's.

Some people are eternal fans of new music, but a lot of other people reach a point where they stop. In my case, I know right where it was -- Prince's Purple Rain. I remember thinking that I sort of liked it, but that it really wasn't my thing. After that point, there were only a handful of new bands that ever held my attention, most notably REM. I don't connect with the hip hop bands, the grunge bands, the hair metal bands, or most recently the over-produced female solo artists (Taylor Perryce) who all sound like they are channeling the biologically improbable love child of Madonna and Celine Dion. Lady Gaga is the only one of them who tries to do anything original, but her heart really isn't in it. She's sort of the Elton John of the group.

Anyway, welcome to the beginning of middle age. Repeat after me: "Get off my grass."

Yes, I like it. What I’ve discovered as I got older is how great some of the music was that I just didn’t listen to. AC/DC in particular...I was more an alternative guy, but it’s amazing to me that you could have AC/DC at the same time as you had Depeche Mode or REM.

80's and 90's? I love it all....even some of the stuff I initially resisted at the time, I love now. I pushed back on the grunge movement....just felt like you needed big hair and lipstick to truly sing real rock....but now I love the Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. stuff. I will even listen to the "boy bands" now. I will always believe the Snoop-Tupac-Biggie era was raps best period.

Recently, I was watching something and it had Ahmad's "Back in the Day (I'm not a kid anymore)" in it....think that was mid 90's? It has been stuck in my head ever since.

I am 51 years old and have loved music since the age of 4 or 5. My first single was Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". I love it all. My 11 year old son, more than my 14 year old son and 16 year old daughter, loves music like I did. He plays bass and is better than a lot of kids older than him. He can plug into a bass in guitar center and play Beatles, Led Zeppelin and other famous bass lines. We love the music of the 80's, 90's but also the 60's and 70's.

I grew up on the Beatles, but then I loved The Smiths, Radiohead, U2, The Clash, Elvis Costello, etc. I love it all.

I still am fond of most 80s kitch. I accept it for what it is. That's how I get by listening to 867-5309 when it comes on Jack FM. I have a more refined range of music appreciation and a less refined. Same as with sports and TV/movie content from each era. I'm not a snob for the most part. Even the most preposterous of hair band sh I kinda miss juuuuuuust a little bit.

Look at these chics for example. You remember this girl group, Bravo/Dladi? They weren't derivative at all. Did you lads listen to Pirate Radio 100.3FM?

One of my favorites was and is Dave Alvin with the Blasters and X but he surpassed all that with his solo career that began in 1985 and runs til now. His good buddy Chris Gaffney launched his recording career in 1985 until his death in 2008 both were Southland legends.

The 80's weren't that bad, but pales in comparison to what the 90's had to offer: Nevermind, Ten, Superunknown, OK Computer, Kid A, Dookie, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), The Chronic, RATM, Dummy, The Blue Album (Weezer) ...
I was already in my 30's during the 90's but I consider the music during the decade one of the best ever.

Absolutely. Dude I went to Pechanga last year sometime and I heard Burning Heart playing as background music for the entire casino. Went again a few months back and it was playing again! I only hear that in my garage, my car, during the movie or inside my brain. Hearing it twice in the outside world was pretty surreal. In the warrior’s code...

I've grown to appreciate the music of the 80s more and more with time. Dire Straits, Peter Gabriel, Don Henley, Rush, The Police, King's X, Prince, MJ, Terence Trent D'Arby, XTC, Metallica, GnR, Echo & The Bunnymen, Pixies, Bowie, Rundgren, Billy Idol etc. All put out some of my personal favorite stuff throughout the decade. Many of which I've only come to discover during the last few years. I also make no apologies for my love of the dick-cheese that littered the 80s like Roxette, non make-up KISS, Van Hagar, and the entire Top Gun OST.

The 90s, though more serious and of a back-to-basics philosophy, discreetly boasted alot of crap. Boy bands and the endless slew of Seattle-inspired vapid radio-rock that popped up during the latter half of the 90s kind of ruin it for me. At least the 80s where fun to look at and unabashedly proud of their excess. Of course the 90s aren't devoid of classics either; Nirvana, Alice in Chains, RHCP, Beck, Tom Petty, Weezer, Buckley, Rage, Pantera, Lauryn Hill, PJ Harvey, etc all put out killer (bleep) that stands the test of time. Also, call me crazy but Pearl Jam? Overrated.

Don't care too much for 90's music.

Rock in the late 60's and through most of the 70's rock featured some awesome guitar based music, that was really the pinnacle for musicianship, the best guitarists came from this era.

Around that time was the birth of Progressive rock, Space rock, Kraut rock, Experimental & Electronic Rock. Again, the music was driven by creativity and expert musicians! Awesome Drummers, Bass Players, Guitarists, Keyboardists, etc.

Up until then it was all about the music, then Punk rock and New Wave revolted against the rock dinosaur establishment.

It was an explosive of creativity in multiple directions, with most of the artists being good musicians based on them growing up on listening to 70's music.

Fast forward to the music from the 90's through the present, these guys grew up listening to soul-less music which featured people who put musicianship second to the lyrics..

laters...

I always find it disappointing when people make comments like that. I totally get why people get locked into eras of music that appeal to them. And I myself definitely have a huge affinity for music of the late 60's and 70's. It was a truly rich era filled with a ton of talent and stylistic experimentation that laid a solid foundation that greatly influenced the music of the last 40 years. It's also the era I came of age in. I was lucky and had a dad who was a huge audiophile and music was almost constantly being played in the house. He was mostly a classical guy, but he was a into all kinds of music and thus he had a vast collection of all genres. Most people had shelves full of books, my dad had walls full of LPs. And because I grew up in that explosion of musical style and experimentation, I've always had an open ear.

Great musicianship didn't suddenly disappear in the 90's. Quite the opposite. Popular music might have proliferated, but great music definitely continues being made. I know you're a fan of Hawkwind, and one of the great bands that came about in the 90's is Wilco. Jeff Tweedy is a big fan of Hawkwind and cites them and other Prog/Space/Kraut rock acts as a huge influence sonically to the work he has done since. There was a lot of great music being made in the '90's and since that was heavily influenced by the great rock and punk acts of the 70's and 80's.

And there are many great musicians that carry the torch of musicianship just as well as those that came before them. Sorry, but to claim that talented musicians suddenly disappeared 30 years ago is ridiculous. As is the idea that all music today is "soulless".

Anyway, the bottomline is the is great music being made in every era. You just have to be open to finding it.

I’m thoroughly enjoying reading all your replies. Alll the while, going down my musical memory lane to the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack, and some Bobby Brown

Few hours later, I’m blasting 2Pac on my earphones.

Couple hours, Nirvana Unplugged.

Family Matters theme? Threes Company? Sure, why not!

Oh man, Lambada! Lost Boys soundtrack, Cry Little Sister, All Night from Can’t By Me Love. You know, during the African Anteater Ritual!!

So on and so forth.

The entire Rocky IV soundtrack is epic! Speaking of Rocky, here's a little trivia for those who don't know: Joe Esposito's "You're The Best", which ended up in The Karate Kid, was originally intended to be in Rocky III. The music for the song was even written by Bill Conti, the composer of "Gonna Fly Now", the Rocky theme. But Stallone ended up going with "The Eye Of The Tiger", so "You're The Best" ended up in The Karate Kid. In that song, the lyrics "history repeats itself" was talking about Rocky fighting Klubber Lang again, and "the final bell" is an obvious reference to boxing.

Speaking of 80's/90's music, I heard this song on the radio on my drive to Las Vegas over the weekend, a song I hadn't heard in years and years, and I remember really liking it when it was out: Damn Yankees' "High Enough", which ended up as a #3 hit. I had to just look them up, and I had no idea that the band featured Tommy Shaw of Styx, Ted Nugent, and Jack Blades of Night Ranger.

Since I'm on a roll, I'll nominate Starship's "Sara" as the most underrated ballad of the 1980's. Love, love, love that song. So much so that I've changed the lyrics to make them Laker-related, and, specifically, #0-related...

L.A., don't look now, he's come alive
Dlo? It's no good to go back in time

We'll never find another 4 like you
You score in bunches, 3's and 2's
A late 1st round hit, a dream that's come true

Kuzma, Kuzma
Hook shots fallin' from the sky
Kuzma, Kuzma
No shot is a bad shot for our guy

Our boy lets it fly when the stakes are high
So smooth, our boy is so smooth as defenders go by

We'll never find another 4 like you
You score in bunches, 3's and 2's
A late 1st round hit, a dream that's come true

Kuzma, Kuzma
Hook shots fallin' from the sky
Kuzma, Kuzma
No shot is a bad shot, oh
Kuzma, Kuzma
Hook shots fallin' from the sky
Kuzma, Kuzma
No shot is a bad shot for our guy

(And Kyle) Kuzma, our boy is such a stylish guy
(And Kuzma) Light-skinned, just like Lonzo, Josh Hart, and BI
(And Kyle) Kuzma!
(And Kuzma) He's Magic Johnson's kind of guy!

We'll never find another 4 like you
A late 1st round hit, a dream that's come true
