Freethrows… Down the stretch, the Lakers gave up a series of three-point plays to James Harden to fall back by double digits with 3 minutes left. He’d finish with a 50-point triple-double. But really the game was lost much earlier than that.

In the first quarter it was the Lakers giving up a 15-0 advantage in second chance points. Throughout the game, it was poor Laker FT shooting (they went 15-27). And in the fourth, a series of brain cramps by Josh Hart burned the Lakers chances despite being right in the hunt all game.

It was anyone’s game until the last few minutes despite all the Lakers issues. Gritty effort at times, but the Basketball Gods just can’t reward you for missing 12 freethrows and giving up 27 second-chance points on the road.

Luke said the 126-111 loss what a good learning experience for them.

“We have to be able to succeed in tough environments when things aren’t going in our favor,” Luke said.

Harden ended up making three more freethrows than the entire Laker team.

LeBron -- -- He had 18 points on 8-10 shooting in the first half. Despite all the Lakers issues (including LeBron’s poor freethrow shooting), it’s getting some efficient scoring like that which helped the Lakers to stay right with the Rockets. No chance for LeBron to close this game when Harden is lighting it up late and getting to the line with frequency. “They’ve got guys who can sell calls really good,” LeBron said. The point of emphasis to keep Harden off the line just didn’t happen. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 12-18 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He iso’d and swished a baseline fade. He worked off a screen in transition and hit the pull-up at the FT line. He lost a ball on a pushout. Lonzo found him on a lob for a layup. He iso’d and hit the deep three. He stripped his man, battled for it and outlet for a breakaway score. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he missed both. He missed a deep three in early offense, not a good look (he can get that any time). He swiped the kickout, stepped on the gas, had his man backing up and scored the layup over him. He took a handoff in transition at high speed and attacked for a layup. He attacked, took contact and hit the short one at the front of the rim. He hit Kuzma alone under the hoop for a dunk. He attacked from the wing for FTs, he missed both again. He got a big to switch on him and drilled a three over him. He attacked got contact but no call. Second Half: He iso’d, attacked and fired it to Hart in the corner for three. He iso’d on a big, blew past him and dunked. He sank a 30-footer like a freethrow (well, like you should shoot a freethrow). He stepped in and drew a charge on Harden on help. He attacked and missed a floater. He changed ends quickly and Lonzo hit him in stride off a cross-court pass for the dunk. He missed a fade across the lane. He missed a deep three. He drew FTs on the perimeter and he made both. He got tapped on a wing three. He attacked around his man for a dunk.

Ball -- -- He was shooting blanks from three (0-6) but at least was able to get to the rim for score. Still, those missed threes just piled up. He’s 1-14 from three in the last three games. This is one of those games where you see the -21 and think if Rondo was here he might be on the opposite side of that. The two of them seem to do that a lot with the +/-. Lonzo was in on some of the cheap fouls by Harden where he lowers his shoulder on the break, but Lonzo and then gets the whistle in his favor. Tough break. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-9 shooting (0-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He missed a three on iso. He lobbed to LeBron for a score. Sloppy entry pass, turnover. He swiped a ball and quickly outlet to Hart for clear-path foul. He swiped an outlet in the backcourt and scored a layup. He crossed over a big, attacked and was fouled on the finish, he made one. He missed a wing three. He got tapped on a three on a kickout. Quick swing pass to Hart off the kickout for a three. He missed a wide open sideline three. Second Half: Transition turnover on a long outlet, points the other way. He missed a corner three. Nice push out with speed and he hit Kuzma who scored. He took a pass at midcourt, quickly fired it across for LeBron who took it for the dunk. He attacked off the three line to his left and scored the layup with his right. He knocked a ball loose, then challenged his man into an airball for a stop. He missed a wing three. He tucked the ball under his arm as he turned the corner and scored a layup. He worked the two-man game and hit McGee for the layup. He kicked out when he should have gone in for the dunk (but Stephenson hit a three off that).

Kuzma -- -- He had 10 points on 4-7 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. Then went off a bit in the third quarter for 12 points. His three ball wasn’t falling and it was a bit of a choppy game for the Lakers, but Kuzma was battling and finding ways to score. Again, sometimes he reminds of a young Antawn Jamison. He’s crafty around the rim and able to work in the post while also being a perimeter threat. His lone three tonight was a tough chuck trying to beat the shotclock from deep, while also getting fouled with no call on Harden undercutting. Felt like Harden fouled Kuzma a few times this game with no call. That had to be frustrating. Especially when Kuzma was getting whistled on Harden on the other end. Kuz tried to shade Harden all game to his right and use his length, but this was a tough matchup for every Laker that tried to cover him. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 8-17 shooting (1-5 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 2 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He rushed a layup after a pass took a while to get to him and he missed. He blocked a layup on a recovery. He blew past a defender on a hesitation move and scored a layup. He slapped a pass to Hart on the break for a dunk. He made a tech FT. He was called for a tech on a Harden foul. He posted up CP3, missed, got it back and scored the And-1 putback, he made the FT. He spun in the post, Harden fell, Kuzma took the pass and dunked. He was stripped in the post. He banked a jumphook in the post, looked fouled with no call. He rushed a three unnecessarily, falling back and missed. Second Half: Nice reach as his man was about to get by him and he swiped the ball and quickly outlet to Hart on the break. He missed a wing three. He didn’t seal his man in the post and the Rockets swiped the pass. He threw a pass out of bounds. He attacked from the corner in transition and reversed. He attacked and set up McGee for FTs. He got the pushoff foul on Harden to get a stop. Rim run and he scored a layup over CP3 when he got the ball. Perimeter foul and he drew FTs, he made both. Around Nene with speed and he drew more FTs (and another tech on Nene), he made the tech, then made both FTs. He had to iso with a couple seconds left and fired and drained an off-balance deep three over Harden (should have been an And-1). He attacked and missed. He wasn’t aware of the clock and passed instead of shooting, shotclock violation. He lost the dribble, got it back, attacked around Harden and dunked over a big. He was blocked on a floater. He missed a corner three. He missed a pull-up.

McGee -- -- He had a freethrow that went wide left for an airball. He’s 3-8 from the line in the last two games. He had a nice stretch in the second half with a three straight scores. The post game was looking good as he had some smaller defenders on him on occasion. Defensively, his mobility and ability to recover and challenged looked more effective than Chandler tonight. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Awful pass to Hart cutting, not close, turnover. He rejected a layup. CP3 iso’d, attacked, pulled it back out, attack JaVale again and McGee recovered to swat him. He then drew FTs changing ends, he made one. He missed a jumphook. He cleaned up the Stephenson dribble penetration. He swished a baseline skyhook over Harden. Second Half: He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Kuzma (he was wide left, for an airball on the FTA), he missed both. He posted up, drop-stepped and scored the layup. He hit a jumphook next time down over his man. Third straight score when Lonzo hit him on the two-man game for the layup.

Hart -- -- I’m not going to get mad at him for the Harden fouls (a big one in the fourth was bogus). He declined to comment on the officiating afterward. “We missed a bunch of freethrows that could have changed the game,” he said. What I didn’t like were a couple of brain cramps from Hart just before the Rockets started to roll. He was arguing with the ref on a no call that had him on the floor on the defensive end. The play was still going on and his man spotted up wide open and drained an open three while Hart was late to recover. The offensive end, there was an offensive board tap out to midcourt that Hart tried to save while not going into the backcourt. He ended up throwing it away for a Rockets score. Obviously, he could have just come down with the ball in the backcourt on a tap out. Those plays hurt, then Harden got the bogus whistle on Hart on a three and the Lakers lost all momentum. Offensively, strong first half. He had 10 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half. Some nice sequences in transition. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-8 shooting (2-3 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He rejected a layup from behind. Bad foul on a Harden 30-footer. He took the touch pass from Kuzma on the break and dunked. He attacked in transition and his layup was blocked or goaltended. He was fouled on the break and made one FT. He backdoored CP3 for a layup. Nice recovery to Harden who thought we were switching, he then forced him into a jump pass turnover getting caught in the air. On the steal off that, we outlet to Hart for the dunk. He drained the wing three on the swing pass. Second Half: He drained a corner three on a kickout. Nice job taking away the angle in transition to score an And-1 reverse, he missed the FT. Strong challenge on a three to block it or force the airball. He complained then gave up an open three not recovering on D. Another brain cramp as he tried to save a tap-out at midcourt when he could have passed the line to recover it instead, turnover, dunk the other way. He missed a corner three.

Chandler -- -- In the first half, he seemed to get caught in no man’s land quite in a bit defensively. Either not close to challenge the guard in the paint or not close enough to prevent his man from a score or rebound. Better job in the second half, but McGee’s agility and quickness seemed to be more consistently effective as the big in the paint. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 8 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He missed a tip in. He tapped out an offensive board that led to a Laker score.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Not much better than Lonzo from behind the arc as KPC went 1-6 from three. He even struggled with his FTs missing a couple. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-7 shooting (1-6 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal and no foul in 22 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He swished a pull-up coming off a screen. He was held off ball for FTs, he made one. He missed a three in transition. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. He spotted Hart under the hoop for a layup. He let his man get around him too easily and gave up a layup. Second Half: He missed a three in transition, looked like he traveled. He missed another three coming off a screen next time down. He filled a lane, took contact and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a tech. He missed a wing three.

Stephenson -- -- He was draining his three today in addition to his usual attacking for layups or pull-ups. Tough rotation minutes for him as he usually comes in for LeBron, but we gave him some good run to close this game with how his three shooting was going. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He crossed over a big and hit the elbow pull-up. He attacked and bricked the pull-up. He was fouled on an offensive board to regain possession. He then attacked out of that to score a layup. He went behind his back, then bricked the elbow jumper. Wild finish on the drive but McGee cleaned it up. Second Half: He iso’d, muscled his man in the paint and powered in the layup. He hit Kuz in the paint in transition for a layup. He missed a long heave at the buzzer. He attacked down the paint and scored a layup. He was called for a carry after ball stopping. He beat the shotlock with a three straight away. He swiped an outlet. He drained a corner three on the same possession. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a wing three.

Bonga -- -- He came in late for a few seconds against Harden. I wouldn’t have minded seeing a few more possessions in that matchup just for curiosity’s sake. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting in 1 minute. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a reverse in transition.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Quiet minutes from Svi. He missed his only three and got a few minutes defensively against the Rockets guards. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 steal and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -5.The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- I wasn’t thrilled about the tech at the end of the third quarter despite the bogus officiating. He talked about the team needing to learn more composure. Not sure if he wasn’t also talking about himself just a little… The Lakers fell behind 14-6, then rallied back with a 7-0 run to force a timeout early on… Down 1 when KCP and Chandler came in for McGee and Lonzo with under 5 minutes left… Svi in for Kuzma down 4… Lakers struggling to control the defensive glass… Stephenson in for LeBron… Despite missing 6 FTs and giving up a 15-0 advantage in second chances, the Lakers trailed just 29-24 after the first quarter… McGee in for Chandler after a couple minutes, down 6. Kuzma in for Svi a second later… LeBron and Hart back in down 8… Getting out in transition, the Lakers cut it to 2 and forced a timeout… Whistles going Houston’s way to close the half… The Lakers trailed 62-56 at the half. The Lakers shot 58% from the floor and 6-14 from the line. Crazy. Second chance points finished 18-7 for Houston. The break 11-2 for L.A… Lakers tried to make a push in the third but their turnovers killed any chance of that to start the half… KCP in for Hart… Chandler in for McGee… The Lakers trimmed it back to 2 and forced a timeout… Luke picked up a tech... The Lakers trailed 90-88 heading into the fourth... McGee in for Chandler down 3… Svi in briefly… Starters back in with Lance instead of Lonzo… Mental mistakes cost the Lakers, then Harden began to blow them out…

We need Denzel, Will Farell and other actors to teach them the Harden School of Acting!

Maybe concentrating on just FTs during the fast-approaching All Star Break would be in order

Hopefully the team will learn the lessons taught well

Appreciate it DB.

Those free throws are very frustrating.

Thanks for the write up Chief.
Houston really fought on the offensive board, doubling our effort, that halted our running game some.

FTs..

Well expected loss with this kind of officiating. You basically cant even try to guard Harden. School of flopping.

Lets go to the next one and forget this idiotic game ASAP.

I agree with Luke about this game being a good learning experience for the team, as painful and frustrating as the officiating by Harden's 3 amigos was to watch.
But if we ever expect to become a championship team, we have the learn to win games despite the officiating, and not because of it (like the team we lost to tonight).

Thanks, DB!

Watching Harden is so frustrating that I have given up. Those are the games I do not watch.

Then again I am staggered that the referees are not watching Rockets games and make notes how they are fooled every single game.

The Lakers need a better shooting coach.

Tough loss, even with the Freethrow woes and offensive boards we were right there in it till the last couple of minutes.

Hope they can move from this and find their stride!

You can’t win if you can’t hit FTs and grab boards.

And (bleep) Harden and the refs. Almost impossible to watch Houston games.

Pretty embarrassing work from the charity stripe. The early season hope I'd somehow conjured up regarding quality of depth among our small wings (Ball, KCP, Hart) vanished with this one.

I tried last night but tapped out in the 2nd quarter. That's not basketball.

Thanks DB. I see a little of Antawn Jamison in Kuz as well.

I know it sounds like sour grapes after a loss, but I can't stand watching Harden play.

I have always appreciated great players on other teams, but this guy's entire game is predicated on tricking the officials.

I know he is talented, but I am glad he is not our franchise player as I don't find his style entertaining at all.

Missed free throws, missed layups, missed rebounds. I sure hope they are being drilled on these flaws in every practice.

Maybe this is why they are dragging. If they all had to make 10 free throws in a row to end practice, practice would never end.

I feel the same. I usually just skip the plays when Houston is on offense, or at least when he's the one that scores. Which was tough to do today since he rang 50 on us, but I tried nonetheless. One of the least aesthetically pleasing players of all time. It takes a lot from the game that he is able to get those same calls still, even though it's his 10th season in the league.

Anyway. The boys hung tough, but at the end the wheels simply fell off. So many missed FTs and too many 2nd chance points given up. I guess the latter is the byproduct of playing a team that relies so heavily on the three ball. Those long rebounds were the end of us.

On to the next.

On to the next.

I tried to debate some cats on LG a long while back and my point was hardens flopping will keep him out of the greatest 2 guards in history convo based on the flopping and FT'S.
I was summarily laughed at but at core of the debate is what you guys are talking about:
MJ, Kob, hell, even Ray allen- they played Basketball- from the pros on down to the local gym, we all recognize the same sport.
I have no Idea what last night was but ( and I mean this sincerely) it was not basketball.
Like the movie "Baseketball"- for the Rockets, last night was a hybrid of shooting the ball, and then performance art.
Anyone old enough to remember the comedian Gallagher?
Google him, that's what last night reminded me of.

Pro wrestling, we were the heel tonight.
Thanks DB.

I was thinking about this on the way to work today. If I have no skin in the game. Houston vs. Random Team...I just don't find watching him very enjoyable. I like some of his shooting, but it's just not fun to watch.

Good competitive game, Harden really just caught fire and never looked back. I really would love to see him try to score like this with hand checking and actual physical defense. Harden always does this during the regular season, that's why he's a regular season MVP candidate but come playoffs with more physical defense he crumbles. This was so poorly referred though, way too many foul calls and technicals. 20 free throws for one dude is insane. They are interrupting the flow of play so much I hope the NBA makes a change. Do people really just want to see mediocre teams scoring 140 points every night? So dumb, please NBA start allowing defense.

This game was lost on FT shooting. I have lost the right to complain about the refs since July 2018.

You forgot Hart at the top of the list with a +85.

My bad. Thanks for the catch!
