Defending Home Court… Perhaps the play of the game in this one came with a minute left when ex-Laker Julius Randle tried to attack Zubac down the middle of the paint. Zubac rejected him badly for the dagger defensive stop to put his final stamp on the game.

Luke gave Zu the start tonight to help anchor the D with McGee still out. And he also matched him up with the truck load of Randle and the length of Anthony Davis. Zubac answered the call with a 16-11 double-double (to go with a couple blocks and steals and multiple shot challenges).

That kind of says something when Zubac’s signs of life are a bigger story than a triple-double by LeBron. It was a team effort tonight with all five starters in double figures of scoring on the way to the Lakers 112-104 win over the Pelicans. The Lakers also had more bodies available for that team effort with Rondo and BI returning to the rotation to help right the ship.

LeBron -- -- “Ask me if I’d like to play with Kevin Durant right now,” he said. They did and he said, “absolutely.” Then told the reporters to ask him about Jimmy Butler, Kyrie, Giannis, Embiid, Simmons, etc. “You can’t control me, at all. And I play by the rules.” He had 12 points, 6 boards and 9 assists in the first half. Most of those assists came in the first quarter. He may be as crafty off court as he is on court. We’ll see this next year in free agency. Triple-double from LeBron tonight even though he was under the weather. He was picking apart the D with the pass. A lot post action from him with typically favorable results. He was able to draw defenders and find his teammates with consistency (Zubac thanks him for that.) Despite the triple-double, he said the game ball goes to Zubac. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-20 shooting (0-4 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 14 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He took the outlet, attacked with speed and scored the layup at high speed. His outlet was picked off. He blew a reverse off a great feed from Ingram. Full-court feed to Zo for a layup. He missed Ingram open under the hoop, but spotted Zubac in the middle of the paint for the score. He took the outlet and hit Kuzma for the dunk. He hit Zubac in the paint for the short jumphook. He attacked and bounced to Zubac for the dunk. He attacked the paint and hit the cutting Kuzma for a reverse. He attacked and missed a turnaround. His pass was picked off in transition. He took contact in transition and went down (staying down longer as he jammed his knee a bit), he made one FT. He attacked the paint and choked the layup. He stripped a man and pushed out the break. He then grabbed an offensive board and muscled in the And-1 layup between defenders, he made the FT. He hit Kuzma coming off the screen for the wing three. He posted up and scored a layup easily. He took a handoff from Rondo and scored the layup. He knocked an interior pass away to ignite a Laker break. He was fouled 30-feet from the hoop trying to get a two-for-one possession, he made both. He missed a long three at the end of the half. Second Half: He missed a long wing three. He hit Zubac rolling for a layup. He hit Kuzma on the UCLA cut for FTs. He missed a layup trailing the break, but Lonzo tipped it in. He took a kickout and quickly attacked for a throwdown. He took an outlet and attacked for FTs, he made both. He missed a turnaround on the baseline. He posted up and hit Kuzma curling to the top of the arc for the three. He posted up and hit the short turnaround in the paint. Not close trying to flip in a layup over his head. He settled for a long turnaround in the post and missed. He missed an open three when the D left him alone. He spun off the D, attacked to his right and scored the layup. He changed directions, attacked and missed a layup. He attacked and was “blocked” from behind (looked like an obvious foul). He missed a wing three, got it back and was fouled at the rim, he missed both FTs.

Ball -- -- That old thing where one of the PGs has the team high in +/- and the other on the opposite ends. Tonight Lonzo led the team with the +18 while Rondo had the -10. Zo drained a couple of threes anrd got out on the break for scores, as well. Steady game from him. He sank a big three late. His minutes were fairly low as Luke went with Rondo for long stretches. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He worked the two-man game and hit Zubac for the dunk on the first possession. He leaked out, sealed his man and took the full-court feed from LeBron for the layup. He missed an open wing three. Quick leak out off the steal and we found him for a dunk. He outlet to Kuzma for the layup. He missed an open wing three. He iso’d on Julius and bricked a three. He attacked in transition and hit the bottom of the rim, taking off way too late. Second Half: He sank a three on a kickout. Great follow on the break to tip in the LeBron missed layup. He took a pass on a cut, took contact with no call (should have been FTs) and he was called for travel trying to gather his miss. Way short on a three. He called his own number and drained the three from the top of the arc. He threw an outlet away.

Kuzma -- -- He took on AD to start the game with Zubac on Randle. It was a tough matchup either way, but Randle was too much to handle in general when they’d get matched up. Some good stops late by Kuz on AD. That made him just scrappy enough for the Lakers to succeed. Not an easy match up any way you slice it in this one. He had 12 points on 5-8 shooting in the first half, before leaving with a slight injury. He came back and looked strong in the second half. Very decisive on his game tonight and he kept it clean with no turnovers. He knocked down threes, got out on the break for scores and even had some nice looks from the midrange. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 8-13 shooting (3-8 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He threw down in transition ahead of the pack for LeBron to find him. He got tapped on a wing three. He cut off LeBron’s drive, took the pass and reversed. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper. He up-faked a couple of times in the paint and missed the jumphook attempt around AD. He took an outlet off a made basket and somehow scored the And-1 layup at a tough angle, he made the FT. He missed a wing three. He came off the screen and hit the wing three. Second Half: He lowered the shoulder and attacked Randle in the paint for FTs, he made both. He swished a 17-footer coming off a screen at the top of the key. He missed a wing three then got dunked on on the other end. He was fouled on the UCLA cut for FTs, he made one. Good anticipation to draw a charge on Randle in the post. He sank a deep wing three on a swing pass. He missed another on iso next time down. He sank an open three off the kickout from LeBron in the post. Nice job holding position on AD in the post to force a miss. He got tapped on a long three.

Ingram -- Good to get the Laker depth back in the mix. With Rondo and BI back, that meant no Svi and Lance tonight. Strong shooting night from Ingram. He was getting his turnarounds and his FTs to drop. That resulted in a pretty good scoring clip from him. He talked about wanting to do more off the ball. That didn’t really manifest in the game tonight like you want. The plays he did work off ball to get the ball usually resulted in one of his typical shot types (midrange or turnaround) versus easier scores at the rim. Luke credited him for making the little plays tonight, freeing up teammates on screens, skying for a board, or making the extra pass. He fit in with the flow of the offense, as well. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He iso’d on Davis and drew FTs, he made both. Quick outlet to Zo for the breakaway dunk. Weak cross court pass and it was stolen. He iso’d and missed a turnaround. He drew FTs fighting for post position, he made both. He attacked in transition, missed, but scored the follow-up. He missed a wing jumper. He got out in transition with speed and Rondo lobbed to him for the dunk. He was stripped in the post. He attacked from the corner, bumped the defender and scored the layup over him. He grabbed an offensive board and hit Zubac who spun and dunked. Second Half: He iso’d, pump-faked and missed a forced elbow jumper. He swished a quick catch-and-shoot on a turnaround. He hit a turnaround over a double team to just beat the shotclock. He worked the post and hit the short turnaround in the middle of the paint. Off the mark on a lob, turnover. Nice feed to LeBron trailing him on the break, but LBJ couldn’t finish (Lonzo cleaned it up). Quick first step on the wing to draw FTs, he made one. He missed a turnaround on iso. Not close on a fade in the post. He drew FTs and made one.

Zubac -- -- With the Lakers struggling to protect to the rim with McGee out, Zubac got the start to give some bulk and length against Randle and the Pelicans. Young Zu rose to the challenge tonight. His D was on point, rotating excellently or using that combination of strength and length to his advantage. He came up with one of the plays of the game in the final minute rejecting Randle who tried to drive on him down the middle of the paint. Several strong defensive plays down the stretch in his notes below. The LeBron/Zubac combo looked effective but most the Laker playmakers looked good with Zubac. He did an excellent job finishing off the catch or making an extra move to lose a defender, then score. Zu scored 12 points on 6-7 shooting to go with 5 boards in the first half as his playmakers set him up early and often. Some weak foul trouble maybe even limited his minutes a little. Overall, though, great job rising to the occasion…very effective tonight. “With JaVale down, I knew I had to step up,” Zubac said, mentioning JaVale texted him a ton last night to motivate him or help him get ready. He had his sixth career triple double. “I never played with playmakers like that,” Zubac said. Luke said Zu is always working on his game and always putting in extra work. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 8-10 shooting to go with 11 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He dunked on our first possession working the two-man game with Ball. Lefty score when LeBron found him open in the middle of the paint. He had a small on him and LeBron hit him for the easy jumphook. He dunked off the drive and dish from LeBron. He hit a jumphook in the paint just beating a three second call. Nice challenge on Randle to force an airball. He couldn’t hold a tricky post entry over the top of the D, turnover. He missed a FT jumper, too flat. Ingram hit him in the paint and Zubac spun around a defender and dunked with both hands. Second Half: He swiped a pass in the paint and was fouled. Good challenge in the paint to force a shotclock violation. He powered in a layup off the screen-roll from LeBron. Another good challenge and rebound on the other end. He crashed the glass and threw down a putback jam. Superb job breaking up a lob to Davis out of a timeout. Nice close out on the perimeter to force a brick on a jumpshooter. He ate up Julius’s drive with a rejection.

Hart -- -- With BI back, Hart slid back to the bench hoping to shake off his slump of late. He sank a couple of threes. They like to run him off a weakside screen to free him up for open threes. These often come off deadballs and SLOB plays where he’s on the opposite side of the court. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He sank a catch-and-shoot wing three coming off the screen. He sank a wing three on a kickout from Rondo. Second Half: He missed a turnaround on iso against the shotclock. He missed a wing three behind a screen. He missed a wing three.

Rondo -- -- I believe he had been leading the Lakers in three shooting prior to this game with a 40%+ three shooting mark. He went 0-4 tonight, spraying the ball a bit all over court as his old team dared him to beat them from three. While he didn’t have a good +/- when on the court, he was definitely a steadying influence as he tallied 9 assists in his limited minutes. Some nice change of pace moves for scores. Good overall first half, but he faded a bit as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 9 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He sank an 18-footer off the two-man game. Change of pace and he scored a layup on the baseline. He attacked the pressure with another change of pace and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a three behind a screen. He attacked and pulled it out to find Hart for three. His pass was knocked down, he got it back and found Chandler for the dunk. He missed a reverse trying to flip it in around a defender. He attacked the paint, then a big and drew FTs on the finish attempt, he made one. Handoff to LeBron for a layup. He lobbed to Ingram on the break for the throwdown. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a layup on a drive out of a timeout. He attacked off the three line and missed a runner. He bricked a three on iso. He attacked and threw it away. Not close on a corner three.

Chandler -- -- Some better moments rim protecting tonight with a couple blocks. The starters have not looked good with Chandler out there lately. So, they kept Chandler coming off the bench and slid Zuback into the rotation. I expect next time McGee is out, Chandler stays on the bench. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with The Action: He was stripped under the hoop. He dunked off the bounce pass. Awful pass to him, but he dove out of bounds to save it and it led to a Laker hoop. He missed a tip-in. Second Half: He blocked a drive. He erased a layup on help D.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Felt like he played a little better than the stats show. He sank a three and a midrange jumper for his only points. With Rondo and BI back, that limits his minutes some. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He swished a three coming off the screen to catch the ball. Late on a pass and it was picked off. He missed an open wing three. Second Half: He missed an open corner three. He sank a pull-up 16-footer coming off a screen. He couldn’t finish a drive but Zubac cleaned up the dribble penetration miss. He missed a wing three.

Walton -- -- He moved Zu into the starting lineup with McGee out and that paid off as Zubac anchored the defense well and was a good target on the other end for easy scores… Kuzma picked up his second foul midway through the quarter. We brought in Hart out of that and changed up our bigs to match Zubac with Davis… Chandler and Rondo in for Lonzo and Zubac with 5 minutes left, Lakers up 3… KCP in for Ingram… They gave up a 9-0 run on soft D… The Lakers were tied 34-34 after the first quarter… He started the Chandler, Kuzma, Hart, KCP Rondo unit… Zubac back in for Chandler, Lakers up 1 with 9 minutes left… Ball in for Rondo, score tied 44-44… All starters in, Lakers up 4… The Lakers pulled out to a 7-point lead, forcing a timeout. Zo out for Rondo… An 11-point Laker lead was quickly trimmed to 3… The Lakers led 69-65 in a fast-paced first half… They pulled out to a 10-point lead and forced a timeout in the third… Bogus fourth foul on Zubac. Chandler in with the Lakers up 12 before the foul… Up 11, when Hart came in for Kuzma… Rondo in for Zo, KCP in for Ingram up 9… The Lakers gave up a late three and led 94-88 heading into the fourth… They started a Chandler, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup… Lakers up 3 with 8 minutes left when LeBron and Ingram came back in for Hart and KCP… Zo in for Rondo up 3… They forced a timeout leading by 9 after a three by Lonzo… The Lakers gave up back-to-back putback scores and Luke called a timeout up 7 with 4 minutes left… Luke said the effort and communication was strong defensively…

Thanks, DB.

Hard to call a game in December a "must win", but man did it feel like it. Especially with the way this particular month has gone in the last couple of seasons, you just didn't want to see that third L in a row.

Hopefully, this flu doesn't take two more weeks to play itself out. I don't remember a situation like Javale's where the sick guy manages to play (well) when he first gets sick (and is presumably feeling his worst), but can't go for the subsequent 3. Must be one gnarly bug.

Missed the game, will watch later. Good to see Rondo and BI back. Good to see the Lakers win. The Lakers need to go on a nice winning streak to get them on track.

Wow, that Zubac game came out of nowhere. I thought his block on Anthony Davis was even bigger than the block on Randle. Plus, all this little hooks and that great spin move for a dunk. Really nice game for Big Zu!

I also thought we played some great defense down the stretch, and we hit most of our free throws.

What a fun game! Thanks as always DB.

Zu! I gotta give props where it’s due. Many here, myself included, were very down on you this year (I even said something to the effect of go play in Europe) but I hope this isn’t a flash in the pan and an improvement on the pontential we saw in your rookie season. Still so young. We shall see.

Just watched the highlights, Zu was definitely the MVP of this one. A few expected AD to go for 50 in this one with Javale out, but Zu put up some good resistance.

Thx DB. Luke gets a ton of Venom for his sub patterns amongst other things, but no praise when he gets things right. Awesome call starting Zu tonight and I thought but sub patterns were on point. Nice win.

Thanks DB

I always knew Zubac could do it if given a good chance.

Good to see BI and Rondo back.

JR looked good and he was a little salt in the wound for the mistake by Magic and Pelinki.

Thanks DB!

Nice to see BI and Rondo back and contributing. Great to see a triple dub from Bron.

But the big revelation was ZUBAC! You can tell he's been working hard on his game, both offense and defense. Both McGee and Chandler are rubbing off on him. So much so that we might be having a little "5-man controversy" this year. How do you relegate Zu to the bench after a game like this? I would love it if Luke tried out a 3-man rotation where McGee, Chandler, and Zu all play around 16 minutes. Whichever one of the 3 is playing stronger that night gets bonus minutes.

Agree. BTW I think I’d be very sad if the core youngsters were traded for stars. I like that the Lakers are developed and we have rooting interest because we witness their growth. ( AND: Please please don’t pick up Anthony.)

Thanks DB for another excellent write-up!

All of the starters had good games last night.

Zubac - Wow. Talk about making a statement. I suspect Luke is going to give him a few more shots at relevant action soon. I like what Tyson Chandler does for us, but I actually felt more confident in the Lakers winning when Zu took the floor as the game was winding down. What a difference from October!

LeBron - another triple double. 14 assists - very effective in keeping all of the starters on top of their games.

Lonzo - offense and defense. Great to see. I like aggressive Lonzo.

BI - Good defense with some great moments. I wonder if BI did some homework while he was down, he didn't look as much like a square peg alongside Kuz and LeBron. Didn't seem to me like he was stopping the offense as much.

Kuzma - lost in the tremendous games Zu and LeBron had, Kuzma had a great game out there too. Five for five inside the three point line to go with a decent percentage from three. Playing hurt but it didn't seem to effect his movement on the floor, and from what I saw he battled pretty tough on defense for a guy not considered a good defender.

Kudos to all 5 starters in this one.

Season to date plus minus. All starters are pluses for what I believe is the first time this season.

Some of the numbers are wonky (McGee +2 Zubac +34) but it is a good baseline. Definitely see why Lance is sitting recently.

LeBron James 92
Josh Hart 73
Kyle Kuzma 69
Brandon Ingram 54
Tyson Chandler 46
Ivica Zubac 34
Rajon Rondo 13
Svi Mykhailiuk 3
JaVale McGee 2
Lonzo Ball 1
Isaac Bonga -9
Johnathan Williams -10
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope -10
Michael Beasley -14
Moritz Wagner -15
Lance Stephenson -39

Laker7 - thought I’d mention I really appreciate the stats after every game. Perhaps, a couple others also have some team or game stats they could post with regularity. That would really add to this thread, imho.

Thanks, DB!

Love the efficiency of Kuzma and Zubac. 23 on 13 shots and 16 on 10. If that comes with decent D on two offensive monsters. Yes, please!

I always liked Zubac and have felt sorry for him this season. Good to see him get a chance and then grabbing it. Now he needs to show some consistency!

And give kudos also to Luke for making a good adjustments to the starting lineup.
