Flat at Home… With both McGee and Chandler out, the Lakers were down to Zubac and Wagner as their bigs. Wagner quickly showed them they were down to Zubac.

So it was small ball and Zubac for stretches in this game.

It was a battle of pace with the Grizzlies doing a great job calling timeouts anytime the Lakers made a momentum changing play or had pace in their favor for a couple of possessions.

Both teams traded hoops and leads throughout the night. Finally with 3:42, the Lakers brought back all of their starters. This included Lonzo who was stone cold from three. He proceeded to brick two straight corner threes while Mike Conley drained two threes on the other end. The game swung right there.

The Grizzlies hit seven straight threes in the fourth, but that exchange killed them. In that stretch, the Grizzlies compromised our defense by focusing on Kuzma who was covering Gasol.

“We had just too many defensive miscues,” LeBron said after the Lakers fell 107-99 at home.

LeBron -- -- Very passive start to this game. He had 2 points on 1-2 shooting, 10 boards and 5 assists in the first half. Apparently, that was only the twelfth time in his career he’s had just 2 shots in the first half. He picked up the scoring in the second half. But this game very much felt like one of those where he could have used another star to impose himself on the game. Great job again working with Zubac and making him look like prime Mozgov in Cleveland. Really should have been a 20-point game from LeBron as he missed an easy lob in this one and Gasol somehow tipped it in, so LBJ got the credit on that. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and no fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He got tapped on a baseline pull-up. He hit Zubac rolling for a dunk. He attacked the inbounds with speed and hit Zubac for the dunk. He cut to the hoop as Kuzma attacked across the lane with the ball, then found LeBron for the score. He smothered his man from behind, nearly taking the ball away. Too long on an advance pass, turnover. Quick outlet to Kuzma who was fouled on the dunk attempt. He bounced to Zubac between defenders for the dunk. Second Half: He sank a deep three off the handoff from Kuzma. He got tapped on a wing three next time down. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup. He pushed out the break, slowed it down for BI to catch up, then found him with the bounce pass for a layup. He took a pass with speed and hit a 15-foot runner expecting a foul. He traveled changing his mind on a pass. He missed a three in transition. He attacked off the Lonzo screen, got downhill and scored the layup. Bad angle post entry pass, turnover. He drew FTs off ball, he made both. He was stripped on a drive. He kicked out to KCP for a three at the end of the fourth. He hit Kuzma on the slip screen for a layup. He choked a lob, but Gasol tipped in the follow for him. He attacked in early offense for FTs, he made both. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. He attacked quickly and scored a layup. He attacked and was blocked.

Ball -- -- He was spraying that three ball early on. Some good looks, but just not close. Most likely because of this, Luke went with Rondo down the stretch a little longer but finally brought Lonzo back in with 3:42 left. Lonzo immediately bricked two threes, while Conley made his two. That was a huge swing. Lonzo has to be more aggressive than just sitting in the corners of his shot isn’t falling. Cut or attack, mix it up. Painful to watch. Grizzlies didn’t have to guard him. Sleepy game from Zo. When he’s going bad like that, he needs to get back on the defensive glass, grab boards, push it out with speed and get his stamp on the game in other ways. “He let the fact that he was missing shots affect his overall energy,” Luke said. Pretty well said. “They didn’t get to me,” Lonzo said. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He threw a pass away under the hoop, then knocked it loose in transition D to help get a stop. Rim run and we found him for an easy score over Conley. He blindsided a big, pushed it out and missed the lefty layup at high speed as it crawled out. He bricked a three popping out behind a screen to take a pass. He probed and hit Zubac for the elbow jumper. He pressured his man up court then blocked his reverse (super quick to react on that block). He missed a corner three. He blocked another drive. Extra pass to Kuzma in the corner for the three. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. Wide open and he missed the wing three. He scored a layup off the jump pass from Kuzma in transition. He threw a cross-court pass into the fifth row. He airballed a corner three. He bricked a corner three. He missed another corner three.

Kuzma -- -- The takeaway in this game was Kuzma’s improved passing as he had 6 assists. He hit a couple of threes early on but had 3 of the Lakers 9 turnovers in the first half. Still, a couple of nice passing sequences with a no-looker to LeBron and then threading another off the dribble Zubac for scores at the rim. He’d clean up the turnovers in the second half and was still moving the ball well. His court vision is really pretty strong when he’s a willing passer, so even though we lost, it was good to see Kuzma’s game making some strides. I was a little disappointed with the swing pass to Lonzo in the corner instead of taking a three late in the game. Lonzo was stone cold, but hard to get mad at making what would normally be the right play. Defensively, we had him on Gasol quite a bit. Including a painful And-1 post-up with 3:42 when we were small. Can’t blame Kuzma on that. It’s just a tough match up for him. Giving up threes to Gasol, you can give him more blame. Not closing quicker on Conley when Gasol set a pick and giving up a big three, yes, that’s on him. You’ve got to make that small ball switch faster. But Kuzma was scrappy trying to defend that post at times, so any criticism there is misplaced. Grizzlies just waited until the heart of the game to kill them on this match up. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-8 shooting (2-6 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a three straight away. He missed a hook across the lane. He attacked across the lane and threaded a no-looker to LeBron cutting baseline for the score. He attacked off the three line and hit Zubac off the dribble for the score. His bounce pass in transition was picked off. He backed it out, attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three off a handoff. He pushed up the break and charged. He drew FTs on a dunk attempt on the break, he missed both short (looked like he tweaked his arm a bit on the foul). He sank a corner three off the extra pass from Zo. He swished a sideline three off a swing pass. Way short on a three and he ended up on his back. He threw an advance pass away to give the Grizzlies an extra possession to end the half. Second Half: He set up Zu for FTs on the two-man game. He pulled up at the three line and jump passed to Lonzo for the layup. He hit Hart for the wing three. He was fouled on the interior feed from Rondo, he made one FT. He slipped the screen, took the pass from LeBron and scored the layup. Overpassed to Lonzo in the corner instead of taking the three, know your shooters (Lonzo was cold). He missed a wing three.

Ingram -- -- You’d think in a game where we had 20 from Ingram and 19 from Zubac, we’d win this one. It was kind of a quiet 20 from Ingram, which is actually fine. I’d rather have that then forcing things over and over on challenged midrange shots. When he did force it, it seemed like he recognized it, too, which is progress. Defensively, some miscues with going under the screen defensively on Conley late or getting lost on the perimeter. We want him coming over the top while our drop coverage big slows things down and then he uses his length to recover and challenge. That becomes a little trickier when you have a floor spacing big out there. Ingram was missing FTs early, all of them long. Last game he missed them long, as well. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He took an interior pass from Zubac and scored an And-1 over his man, he missed the FT. He posted up and missed a turnaround, looked undercut with no call. He probed off the high screen and drew FTs, he missed both (all his misses long). He missed a wing three. He slithered around Gasol in transition to draw more FTs, he made both. He faked in the post, was stripped and tied up. He missed a pull-up 16-footer on iso. He scored a layup on the break when KCP bobbled a pass then found him instead. He posted up and hit the turnaround jumper on the baseline with the clock running low. He stepped back and missed the sideline three. Swing pass to Kuzma for a three. Second Half: He attacked off the wing screen and scored a layup. He sank a pull-up at the FT line. He scored a layup when LeBron found him trailing the break. He forced a layup in transition and was smothered. He missed an elbow jumper. He attacked in transition off the Zubac block and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He attacked and got bumped off his line to step on the baseline. He up-faked and couldn’t finish the drive. He sank a wing three off the swing pass.

Zubac -- -- Strong start to the game as teammates continually found him for scores. He led the team with 16 points on 8-10 shooting in the first half. LeBron/Zubac showed some good chemistry. Really good touch by Zubac to finish some tricky ones in traffic, too. Good job setting screens and getting into open space. Defensively, Zu had some moments with 4 blocks. At times, though, a little too flat-footed and he got burned. Still, he’s very young and this is the progress we need to see. Some good moments going straight up and being big to challenge shots. He said the communication on D was poor tonight. Like early in the season, a huge difference when we had a bigman in the game versus when we didn’t. The small ball was soft. Moe was softer. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-12 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 4 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: Interior feed to Ingram for an And-1. He grabbed an offensive board and scored. He was stripped on a reverse attempt. He dunked off the drive and dish from LeBron as he rolled behind him. He dunked off the drive and dish from LeBron. He swished an elbow jumper. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Kuzma. Tricky score over a smaller man on the roll. He blocked a drive on the other end. He fumbled a pass, then was blocked as he tried to score. LeBron threaded a pass between defenders to him and Zubac hit the soft runner. He rolled to the open space and LeBron bounced it to him for the dunk. Help D to reject a drive. He couldn’t finish a lob. Second Half: Strong attack off the dribble and he was knocked down on the finish for FTs, he made both. Flat-footed and he gave up a dunk on a drive. Good hands to catch a high pass for Kuzma on the two-man game for FTs, he made one. He missed a baseline jumper. He blocked a drive to ignite the break. He blocked his man under the hoop. He was blocked in traffic.

Hart -- -- He sank three three’s in this game. Some good extra passes from teammates and Hart, as well this game. Hart said the energy was much different in this game than last time we played the Grizzlies. He said we were flying around more on D and that got us out in transition. That game was over quickly. This one wasn’t and the Grizzlies out executed the Lakers down the stretch. “We made a couple costly defensive mistakes down the stretch that we’ve got to learn from,” Hart said. In one stretch, we had him on Jackson where fronted the post and this was easily abused by the Grizzlies. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-7 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He fronted the post twice and gave up easy scores. Swing pass to KCP for the corner three. He sank a wing three in transition. He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a three. He rejected a drive. Second Half: He sank a wing three after giving it up and getting it right back. He attacked off the three line between defenders and drew FTs, he made both. Swing pass to Ingram for three. He missed a wing three off a high kickout. He attacked from the corner but didn’t go up strong and was blocked. He hustled for an offensive board, pulled it back out and hit the corner three.

Rondo -- -- Pretty lackluster game from the point guard position tonight. Lonzo contributed 4 points, Rondo 2 with a combined 6 assists and 5 turnovers. Uggh. Rondo’s D was pretty shaky out there, but he was able to poke a couple balls loose at times. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He traveled off a jumpstep in the paint. He hit KCP curling for a layup. He found Zubac rolling for a score. He grabbed a board, pushed it out and scored a layup. He hit Hart in transition for three. He got caught in the air and bricked a prayer. Second Half: Interior feed to Kuzma for FTs. He got caught in the paint, fumbled it, got it back, then threw it away. He stripped his man.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- You were hoping he’d spark the team when jumped a passing lane and took it the other way for a dunk. The Grizzlies did a great job calling timeouts after any kind of momentum building or pace-pushing play to keep the Lakers stuck in mud. KCP sank a couple of threes and curled off a screen for another layup for his points. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He curled off a screen, took a pass and scored the layup. He drew a foul fighting over the screen to get a stop. He sank a corner three off the swing pass. He filled the lane with speed, bobbled the pass, but found Ingram instead for a layup. Second Half: Quick ball-fake, then he fired to just get it off before the shotclock and drain the three. He missed a wing three, not quite getting squared up before the catch. He jumped a passing lane and took it for the dunk.

Stephenson -- -- He came in early on for a brief stint when Luke was scrambling for a bench lineup to make an impact. No real action. The Stats: He didn’t score in 1 minute. He was a -4. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Wagner -- -- Zubac was a +15 in the first half, while Moe was a -15 … in just 4 minutes. Just no resistance defensively. Lakers looked very soft with Moe and/or small ball. In the third quarter, they opted to stay small rather than bring him in. Definitely the right choice. Lesser of two evils in this one. Hard to say how the communication was with him back there. They were just awful. When he is out there, we need to at least try to establish the pick and pop to space the floor. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was blocked, got it back, was stripped and then fouled. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- hart in for Ingram after 8 minutes, Lakers up 4… Rondo in for Ball, Lakers up 5 with 3 minutes to go… Wagner in for Zubac a few seconds later… LeBron out Lakers up 3, KCP in… They quickly lost the lead and fell back by 2. Luke called a timeout. Wagner not really putting up any resistance defensively… He brought in Lance and Ingram in for Wagner and Kuzma, going super small… They got smoked in the post… The Lakers trailed 26-20 heading into the second quarter… Awful close to the quarter… Zubac, Ingram, Hart, KCP, Rondo to start… They got tempo going in their favor and led by 2 when the timeout came… Lakers up 4 when Wagner came in for Zubac… Timeout a few seconds later with the game tied… LeBron, Kuzma, Ball back in out of that to go with Hart and Wagner… Wagner and Hart out for Ingram and Zubac, Lakers down 2… The Lakers trailed 50-46 in the first half. They had 9 turnovers to the Grizzlies 3… Back and forth until the Lakers started to pick up the pace, then the Grizzlies quickly called a timeout, Lakers down 2… Hart in for Zubac, Lakers down 1… The Lakers pulled out to a small lead, but fell apart on D on a couple stands and Luke called a timeout… Rondo in for Zo, KCP in for Ingram, Lakers down 2 with 2:18 left… The Lakers led 75-72 heading into the fourth after KCP hit a three at the end of the quarter… He started the Zubac, Ingram, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup… LeBron and Kuzma back in for Zubac and Ingram with 7 minutes left up 1… Still small after 3 and half minutes down 2. All starters back in after the timeout with 3:42… He quickly subbed out Zo for Hart after the Lakers gave up two threes and Lonzo bricked his two open threes…

Thanks DB!

This one goes in the brutal loss column with a couple of losses to the Spurs and at home vs. Orlando. Let’s hope they recover because losses like tonight can be very costly come April.

Top 3 losses of the season with ORL and SAS at home. Just awful game from start to finish. I am looking at 3 games losing streak now. Game at SAC will be hard. Then we play Flippers to end it. Hope we will win it.

I had a bad feeling about this one as early as the first quarter, because they just couldn't get any separation from the Griz.

Another nothing game from Ball. Why even bother bringing him in with 4 minutes to play and in relatively good shape? Just horrible. LeBron being completely passive for 3 quarters also didn't help. And Ingram with the FT misses. Again. Jeez, they're called free throws for a reason.

Should've been a dominant win in preparation of the Christmas game. Instead I dare not hope for a bounce back win against the Dubs.

Thanks DB! Too many Lakers with sub-par games against the Griz and it burned us.

Zubac - Plays well off Lebron. Good post moves and good stretches on defense but still inconsistent. Needs work on rebounding and passing the ball back out of the post.

Zo and Rondo - Zo had one of his stinker games and Rondo is probably still shaking the rust off. Wasn't a good effort from either.

Moe - Needs G-League work. Hope to see McGee and Chandler back asap.

When examining this 8 point loss, I don't think you have to look much further that ZO!

He was 2 for 10 of his FG's and 0 for 7 on his 3pt attempts, if he goes 2 for 7 and the Lakers make 2 of the 7 missed free throws and it's a 1 point win!

WALTON needs to tell Zo to stop shooting, period, if he wants to score he can drive to the basket, otherwise PASS the BALL!

Thanks DB. I had a really bad feeling about this game going into it without either of our top centers. Zubac is greatly improved, but that buys us about 20 minutes. Mo Wagner simply isn't ready. And small ball for extended minutes has been tried and proven lacking many times this season. Not that Luke had a choice.

Nonetheless I agree with Luke's decision not to take any chances with McGee. Pneumonia on top of an asthma condition is nothing to mess with, make sure he recovers. Really unfortunate timing to have Chandler suffering back spasms too. Get healthy big fella.

Silver lining - Zubac backed up his good game from the previous night with another solid performance. I'm pretty confident Luke can add him to the center rotation now, whenever either McGee or Chandler needs a break.

Zo - good player when his head is in the game. Interesting how the same night he's going zero for seven from beyond the arc, he's also taking a pass on a Laker-advantage break, jumping up high in the air, and tossing a spectacular, mid-air two handed pass straight into somebody's beer up in Row 11 of the bleachers.

Yeah, we were doomed.

Guys we have to keep Ingram. I don’t care anymore if Kuzma, Lonzo or Hart and picks have to leave for AD. Ingram has got to stay though. I really would like to keep both ingram & Hart.

Yeah, wanted to harp on that one. Great passer and above-average court vision yada yada. Just turrible.

I knew this game was going to be a problem for the Lakers from the beginning. The Grizzlies just wanted to maintain a close score so that they could strike in the 4th and use Conley and Gasol to their advantage in the last few minutes of the game. Walton took the bait and went small early in the 4th which was a mistake because the Lakers lost the momentum. The way to beat the Grizzlies is by building a sustainable lead and grind it out to keep it.
