Taking it to the Defending Champs… The league kind of queued this one up for the Warriors. Home game for them, Lakers and LeBron, national Christmas Day game. Seemed like the kind of game where you’d have their attention and they’d take it to L.A.

It was a beatdown. And the Lakers delivered it.

After a strong first half, the game hung in balance in a pivotal stretch of the third quarter. LeBron went down with a groin strain and went to the locker room. The Warriors went on a run. Curry sank a couple of threes and they were getting revved up. They trimmed a once 19-point Laker lead to just 2 points with 3 minutes left in the third.

But the Lakers bench rallied. Playoff Rondo and Playoff Stephenson both seemed to make appearances for the nationally televised game against the defending champs. Rondo orchestrated the offense and Stephenson sank some big threes for the bench in his limited time, including one to close the third quarter and give the Lakers a 9-point leading heading into the fourth.

Rondo settled the team down, attacked the basket and found teammates for scores. Defensively, their game plan was to stay with shooters (Durant, Curry and Thompson), sending help, and leaving others open to try to beat them. They didn’t. (To be fair, Curry did miss a few he usually makes, and Klay, who has struggled of late, was also a complete non-factor. You will get more punch out of those guys usually.) But the Lakers were also without LeBron for most of the second half.

They kept turnovers low, weathered the Warriors run on the road in a building they haven’t won in for a long time and blew them out 127-101. A good test for this team.

“I thought that was probably our most complete game of the season,” Luke said, crediting his staff for a great game plan, as well.

Lots of guys stepped up, including young Zubac once again. He anchored the D and made 9-10 shots for 18 points. Kuzma led the team with 19.

LeBron -- -- He went down awkwardly on a slip a few minutes into third and called for a timeout shortly later. He said he felt a pop and went back to the locker room. They say it’s a minor groin strain and he will get an MRI tomorrow. Of course, nothing about an injury to LeBron is minor for this team. Somehow, tonight, they were able to work it out. Which is amazing because as Luke said, a lot of times we rely on LeBron to help weather the storm when another team goes on a run. As soon as LeBron went down, the Warriors went on a run, but the team held it together without him. LeBron was killing the Warriors in his 21 minutes, finishing with 17 points and 13 boards in that time. Defensively, he was playing a bit of a free safety at times as we dared some guys to try to beat us. Hopefully, we hear good news and he returns to the court quickly. He didn’t seem super concerned after the game because he was able to walk off the court on his own, but who knows? “Hopefully, it’s not a long thing and I can get back on the court as soon as possible,” he said. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Change of directions off a Lonzo screen and he was fouled between defenders for FTs, he made both. He probed and missed a fade. His behind-the-back pass was picked. He jumped a passing lane, challenged Durant in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked and kicked to Ingram for the three. He muscled his way to the paint and drew FTs, he made one (Green’s second foul). He kicked to Kuzma for a three. He iso’d, spun and scored a tricky layup around the defender. He iso’d and swished a wing jumper. He missed a three in transition next time down. He posted up and swished a turnaround. He missed a long step-back wing jumper. He grabbed an offensive board and muscled in the putback score through defenders. He scored a layup between defenders as he worked off the Zubac screen. He cut off Lonzo’s post and drew FTs, he made one. He crossed over, drew the help and hit Zubac for the dunk. He muscled his way to a slow-mo layup. Second Half: He hit the floor for a loose ball and it led to a Warriors turnover. He missed a step-back three on iso.

Ball -- -- Quiet game, but he was more aggressive while out there. I liked how he attacked rather than settling for threes. That, at least, seems like a little learning from the last game. He also looked to be more physical with Curry. We saw him with a charge trying to muscle past him and a couple post possessions. Rondo was playing superbly, so you definitely give him the extra run in this game. But it’s important when he’s in there against this team that he makes Curry work. Lonzo helped get him into a little foul trouble early doing that. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-6 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a tough runner off glass. He missed a step-back corner three. He sank a three straight away, good looking stroke on that one. He attacked aggressively next time down and drew Curry’s second foul, he made one FT. He missed a wing three next time down on a kickout. He was called for a charge trying to power threw Curry baseline (I like the aggression, though). He lobbed to Kuzma for the throwdown. He posted up and hit LeBron cutting for FTs. Second Half: He posted up Curry and drew his third foul as the pass came. He attacked off the three line and hit Zubac for the short one (needed to do that in the last game). He stopped and swished an 18-footer off the high screen. He missed a corner three.

Kuzma -- -- A lot of switching and rotating needed by the team in this game and Kuzma was in the mix on a lot of that. We also had to throw him on Durant defensively when Ingram was in foul trouble. Very good effort by Kuzma on that end. Offensively, it wasn’t like he was killing it in this game. He was aggressive. He was trying to step up when the Lakers were on their heels. He did just enough of everything to be effective offensively. Hit a couple threes? Check. Get out in transition for scores? Check. Get to the line? Check. Durant said the team did a good job taking a punch. He specifically mentioned a couple of FTs Kuzma was able to manufacture. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-14 shooting (2-6 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He drained a quick-fire pick-and-pop three for the Lakers first score. He missed a spinning jumphook on iso. He sank an open wing three on a kickout in transition. He missed a forced corner three. Second Half: He was fouled on a three off an inbounds pass, he made two FTs. He missed a wing three. He curled, took the pass on the move and hit the runner off glass. He missed a corner three in transition. He attacked on iso and missed the running jumphook. He drew FTs and made one. He traveled on the break, taking an extra step off a ball fake. He missed a layup in transition. He missed a three when his man went behind a screen. Aggressive attack down the lane and he drew FTs, he made both. He sank a step-back baseline jumper. He crossed over, took contact with no call and missed. He scooped up a loose ball in transition and scored the layup.

Ingram -- -- Durant finish with 21 points on 5-13 shooting and 7 assists. You’ll take that. The Lakers threw Ingram and Kuzma on him and sent help. Durant did miss an open three and a layup that he’s normally money on. But we also made him work and had some good challenges mixed in there. Offensively, he had a beautiful up and under at the elbow to lose Durant on a series of moves for a layup. That was pretty. He also sank a three and didn’t shy away from taking them. Foul trouble limited his minutes some in this one. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: Sweet up and under from the elbow to lose Durant and score a layup. He was stripped on a drive across the lane. He lost the ball on a kickout. He swished an open corner three on a kickout from LeBron. He missed a wing three. He attacked and scored a layup. He forced Iguodala into a brick on a turnaround. Second Half: He attacked off the bounce pass and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed a three straight away. He threw a kickout out of bounds. He missed a turnaround over Curry from 16 feet. He drew FTs trying to post up, he made both. He swished an elbow jumper bouncing off the contact. He attacked from the corner and couldn’t finish. Nice challenge on Durant’s three to force a miss. He iso’d and was hit the pull-up 16-footer, he made one FT.

Zubac -- -- Big night for Zubac in the national spotlight. Think about the outcome in this one. We’re missing our starting center and trying to beat the Warriors on the road. And then LeBron goes down. This is a bigtime game and performance from him. He scored 18 on 10 shots, got the double-double in the process. He was too physical for the Warriors (ate Durant up in the post on one possession), but the key was not ever leaving him on an island against shooters. He was able to plug the paint, manage a couple players at once at times under the hoop. Offensively, when we have guys who can draw a crowd like LeBron or execute the two-man game to perfection like Rondo, Zu is making a living off that. Zu’s plus/minus has been ridiculously good. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-10 shooting to go with 11 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +25. The Action: He cleaned up the missed Lonzo runner with a putback. He attacked the pressure at the three line and drove for a layup. Wow, he was about 15 feet away on a rotation but recovered at the rim to spike down a rejection. He traveled on the other end after bobbling a pass. He missed a short jumphook. He backed down Durant and powered in a layup through Durant. He dunked off the drive and dish from LeBron. Second Half: He scored a sort one off the drive and dish from Lonzo. Great job defending two guys under the hoop and blocking one. Offensive board and putback. He kicked to Rondo for a three. He blocked a layup. He changed ends quickly and they found him for a dunk. He dunked off the screen-roll with Rondo. He tipped in a missed Rondo drive.

Hart -- -- Better minutes from Hart. We didn’t see any mismatching issues out there for him defensively. Offensively, he sank a couple of threes and attacked the rim for scores. Very good job by the second unit tonight on both ends. He did have the team-high 3 turnovers. Seemed like he had trouble holding on to the ball a little tonight. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He swished a wing three behind a screen. He fumbled a pass out of bounds. He was stripped in transition. He missed a deep three. He jumped a passing lane, stole it, gave it up, got it back and powered in the layup. He blocked a layup from behind. He attacked the rim hard and took down Durant in the mid-air collision, he made both FTs. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a step-back three after faking a handoff. Offensive interference on the follow tip. He attacked from the corner and was blocked. He swished a wing three in transition. He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and dunked.

Rondo -- -- Key to this win was Rondo’s leadership and impact. He was aggressive scoring and setting the table. He helped make a stand when the Warriors were running and had the team following him. Very good decision making. He had 10 assists with no turnovers. The prettiest might have been a behind-the-back bounce pass in the interior to KCP for a layup. He also had some nice drives and finishes around the rim for scores. Still, I love the non-flashy plays like getting a switch that gave Zubac a smaller man in the post, sending the ball to him, then taking the kickout off the subsequent double team and draining the wide open wing three. That’s just thinking the game well and executing, nothing flashy. The second unit was huge tonight. “We were able to withstand them and got back to our principles playing defensive getting stops,” Rondo said. Asked if he thought we saw Playoff Rondo, he said no. National TV Game Rondo? Maybe. Whatever the case, good to have him back. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 10 assists and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He attacked and missed a tricky layup high off the glass. He hit Hart behind the screen for the wing three. He attacked, slammed on the brakes with a ball fake and hit the turnaround. Swing pass to Lance for a three. He got around Curry and went behind his back in traffic to KCP for a layup. He missed a 16-footer left alone. Second Half: He iso’d on a big, attacked and scored a layup around him. He iso’d on Livingston and hit the hook over him. He attacked off the three line and banked in the one hander over Livingston again. He got a switch, sent it into the post to Zubac, they were forced to double, they kicked it back out and Rondo sank the wide open wing three. He crossed over, attacked Green and drew FTs and Green’s fifth, he made both. He missed a corer three up against the shotclock. He attacked off the high screen, drew the help and hit Zubac for the dunk. He attacked and missed a floater. He picked up Curry’s fifth foul off ball with 6 minutes left. He attacked with speed and spun in a layup around the D. Green then plowed into him on the other end (and fouled out). He kicked to KCP for a three after working the two-man game with Zu. He missed a wing three. He kicked to Hart in transition for a three.

Chandler -- -- Some good hands and anticipation tonight getting them on passes. He ended up with a couple of steals. He didn’t score, not able to finish at the rim on his one attempt. But, again, just not having small ball out there makes a big difference for this team. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He left Green wide open to airball a three. He deflected a pass to ignite a break. He forced Curry into an airball from three. Good challenge at the rim, but we couldn’t recover the miss. Second Half: He deflected a pass. He couldn’t finish a layup on an interior feed.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Steady game from KCP. He scored from different spots on the court. He sank a three, hit an off-balance jumper, a floater and scored a layup off a cut. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He missed a three straight away. He scored a layup off the behind-the-back feed from Rondo in traffic. He expected a foul call and chucked in an off-balance 15-footer with no call on Curry. Second Half: He hit a floater down the middle of the paint. Crafty hold on Green who was about to roll free, forced a turnover. He missed a wing three. He found Zubac under the hoop for a dunk in transition. He sank a sideline three on a kickout.

Stephenson -- -- That three ball was falling tonight. That was pretty huge. He sank a big three at the end of the third quarter that helped give the Lakers a little padding heading into the fourth. Luke played him limited minutes, but Lance kept it simple an effective. He was quietly a key to the Lakers weathering that run by the Warriors after LeBron went down. When we’re getting big performance off the bench by both him and Rondo, that’s tough to handle. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: Quick-fire wing jumper on iso that didn’t hit rim. He sank a corner three off a swing pass. He sank a wing three after losing Curry off a screen. He iso’d and hit a pull-up in the middle of the lane. Second Half: He drained a deep three at the end of the third and strummed the guitar, huge three. He missed a wing three. He jumped a passing lane for a steal.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He came in for some quick garbage time run and drained a couple of threes. Stealing that mojo from Klay (and, hopefully, keeping it). The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-2 shooting from three in 2 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swished a three off the handoff. Another three behind the screen at the wing next time down.

Wagner -- -- Some garbage time run and he picked up a couple of assists. Nice sequences with Svi out there. The Stats: He didn’t shoot and had 2 assists in 2 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Handoff to Svi for three.

Walton -- -- Lakers got two fouls on Green in the first quarter, attacking aggressively. When he sat, Zubac sat for Chandler, score tied… Curry picked up his second foul, score tied at 20… Down 2, Hart and Rondo in for Ingram and Ball with 3 minutes left… KCP in for LeBron with a minute left, Lakers up 2… The Lakers led 32-25 after the first quarter… He started a Chandler, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo lineup… Feisty ball by this unit, helps when Lance is hitting a couple threes… They led by 5 when the timeout came and we swapped in Zubac… The lead extended to 11. Luke kept the second unit out there… Ingram in for Stephenson… LeBron in for Rondo, interesting. Lakers still up 11 with 6 minutes to go. Good rest for LeBron… Ball in for KCP a minute later, same lead. All starters in a second later… Timeout Warriors, Lakers up 15… Ingram out for Hart, Lakers up 9… Lakers leaving Iguodala and Green wide open, daring them to shoot threes, sending help on the big three… Lakers led 65-50 at the half. Warriors shot 5-25 from three (missing some open ones, but also leaving certain guys open to take them)… After a turnover and then not-matching up on D, Luke called a timeout after 3 minutes. Still up big… Ingram out with fouls for Hart. Kuzma onto Durant defensively again… Nervous time as LeBron goes to the locker room early in the third quarter… Chandler in for Zubac… The lead was cut to 8 as Curry hit a couple of threes. Luke called timeout to slow the momentum shift… Trimmed to 3 shortly after Rondo came in… Chandler, Kuzma, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo… Ingram in for Kuzma, Luke gambling with the foul issues and momentum shift… The Lakers led 91-82 heading into the fourth. Big three by Lance with a second left in the quarter… Zubac in for Chandler to start… They stretched it back to 17 points with a strong first three minutes… Rondo orchestrating superbly… Bench in late as the Lakers are up big and can cruise to the win…

I probably agree with Luke. Other than the Memphis away game this was the most complete game of the season. Considering it was against the champs and missing LeBron for a quarter and a half, the feat is even more amazing.

I also think this is the best you can hope to do against the trio of Steph, Klay and Durant. They especially hounded Steph and Klay. Just a very disciplined performance on both ends of the floor. Zu and Rondo split the game ball. What a difference having a true PG out there makes, I was glad Luke didn't put Lonzo in when Rondo was rolling.

Go Lakers!

Thanks DB

I kept thinking this game was going to blow up but the Lakers kept their feet on the gas pedal all game. Loved that they made a run and cut it to 2 pts and the team responded with Lebron in the Locker Room.

3 big starts in a row for Zubac. I thought his low post defense looked pretty good. He is a keeper and will be in the rotation. It is great to have McGee and Chandler teaching and supporting him.

Great defense all around and our depth really showed up.

Thanks DB! Our team showed a lot of composure and resiliency after LBJ exited the game with a groin injury. Rondo controlled the game, Zubac was a factor on both ends of the floor and Make Em Dance Lance hit some big shots especially the 3 at the end of the 3rd to push the lead to 9 going to the 4th. Great Win!!!

You're the greatest, DB. I don't tell you often enough, but I read you after every game, kind of like I used to do decades ago with the L.A. Times (back when I subscribed). Why you're not in major media, I don't know.

With admiration,

Richard

So now we have a 3-headed monster? JaVale-Tyson-Zubie? It's cool when a youngster gets an opportunity and makes the most of it.

Hoping for a good LBJ medical report.

Draymond and klay are being selfish and it's the reason everyone is not on the same page.

Klay is taking ill-advised shots and being a complete blackhole on offense- instead of letting the offense come to him- because it's a contract year.

Dray is being over-aggressive on the defensive end and getting in foul trouble early, which (bleep) up the rotation.

They both won't get max if they continue to play like this

From the Warriors subreddit. Deliciious. Let's not forget Boogie's playing for a contract also.
