Summer League Flashbacks… With our vet trio of LBJ, Rondo and McGee all out, the Lakers rolled out their 2017 Summer League champions to face the Kings tonight.

If memory serves, both Ingram and Lonzo had cramps that had them sidelined that summer. Tonight, it happened again with Lonzo, but not after dropping a near triple-double in one of his best games of the season.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have him out there to close the game.

The Lakers had a 15-point lead in this game midway through the fourth quarter, but when the Kings went on a run, they missed their sidelined veteran teammates. The offense began to stagnate down the stretch, there was too much dribbling and not enough playmaking as Lonzo was moved off ball with his injury. After Lonzo broke free for a score with 1:42 left, he went down again with the cramp and was done for the night.

The miscues and mishaps piled up for the Lakers down the stretch. They gave up a huge offensive board off a missed three, then fouled a three-shooter. They turned the ball over. With a rebound and the ball in Kuzma’s hands, he gave it up to BI who was fouled in the backcourt with 4 seconds left. Ingram would make just one freethrow to lead by just 2.

On the subsequent sideline out of bounds play, the Kings drained a three at the buzzer and the Lakers fell 117-116.

“You don’t let it get to that one shot,” Luke said afterward. He mentioned all those little mistakes that cost them. While we had good scoring games from Kuzma, Ball and Ingram, there was plenty to takeaway and learn from this game.

Still, some of those familiar themes popped up with this young bunch. The inability to close. The missed freethrows. Hopefully, they can get their vets back soon.

Ball -- -- This is the Zo you hope the Lakers see with consistency as he gets more games and years under his belt. He caused all kinds of problems for the Kings tonight. With both LeBron and Rondo out, Lonzo had to step into that primary playmaker/floor general role. He got his confidence going early, sinking three threes in the first quarter. He and Kuzma were teaming up again and again in the first half as Lonzo set the table for him. Lonzo had 11 points and 8 assists in the first half. Most of his assists in the half were to Kuzma. In the second half, he pulled up on the break with a calf cram in the third quarter and had to sit. When he returned, he was moved off ball quite a bit and taking it a little easier. He had a big score on the break that forced a timeout, but he went down off that with the cramp again and had to sit the final 1:42. Painful with no Rondo or LeBron out there. Defensively, he had Fox. Key was to make sure he didn’t get speed into the offensive zone. And, of course, his bigs need to be ready when Fox comes off the screens (which wasn’t always the case early on). They contained him pretty well with 15 points on 20 shots. Lonzo was a rebound shy of a triple-double tonight. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-13 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 9 boards, 12 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Off the mark out of a timeout with a pass, turnover. He missed a layup on the break, but Ingram cleaned it up. He hit Kuzma for a layup off the two-man game on the left side. He missed a wing three. He drained a three straight away on a kickout. He swished a wing three on a swing pass. Too strong on the finish and he missed the layup. Off the mark on an outlet, turnover. He sank another wing three on a swing pass. Pressure D forced a bad pass, he immediately busted down court, took the pass and dunked. Bounce pass on the mark to Kuzma in transition for a layup. They tried to trap him on the sideline and he fired a pass to Kuzma rolling for the layup. He broke down the D and missed at the rim but Chandler easily dunked it back in (Zo looked fouled on that). He forced a big into a travel in the post. He hit Chandler on the break for the dunk. He hustled back in transition and stole the ball off that. Second Half: He pulled up behind a screen and swished a three straight away. He attacked, spun and hit the short one at the front of the rim. He kicked out to BI for a three. On the mark on a 60-foot feed to Kuzma off a made basket for a dunk the other way. Good challenge on a big to get a miss. After a turnover, he quickly demanded the ball from Ingram on the inbounds and fired down court to Hart for the layup. He snaked off the screen to draw the big to him then lobbed to Chandler rolling for the dunk. He got middle off a Kuzma screen and took it for a layup. He scooped up a loose ball and hit Chandler under the hoop for FTs. He missed a deep three up against the shotclock. Quick pushout in transition and he scored a layup, but his leg cramped again and he had to sit.

Kuzma -- -- Strong game from Kuzma, even with a few brain cramps down the stretch. He fought through those and returned punches offensively in crunch time. Plenty for him to take away from this for him. First, the miscues. He had a big turnover on the sideline late in the game and an even bigger foul on a 3 shooter with a minute left. Also, I was bummed when I saw Kuzma give up the ball to Ingram with 4 seconds left for that intentional foul. I want the ball in our better FT shooters. That’s him and KCP. You’ve got to recognize that situation. They were going to give him an intentional foul, take it, play the percentages and we might be talking a different outcome. Strong/aggressive first half with 23 points on 8-15 shooting, his best scoring first half of the season. With LeBron out, we need guys to fill that scoring void and Kuz got out of the blocks quick. Really liked us exploring the Lonzo/Kuzma two-man game more. Getting reps with those two is only going to pay off more as the season goes along. He battled on the boards and had some good challenges at times. Luke was annoyed with a play where Kuzma was complaining to the refs and not getting back in transition D. Lots of teachable moments and lots to like. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 12-24 shooting (2-8 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 6 turnovers and 2 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He sank a pull-up 18-footer from the wing. He missed a three next time down. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Zo. He bobbled a pass in the paint, turnover. He missed a three straight away. Turnover on a bounce pass to Chandler, hard to tell whose fault that was. He sank a three off the kickout from Hart. He changed directions and swished the baseline floater. Quick face up and first step to get baseline and he scored a reverse. He hit Zubac with the pocket pass for a layup. He attacked and wanted the foul on the floater as he missed while getting knocked down. He crossed over and hit the tricky running bank over his man. He attacked and missed a short one. He attacked, spun, took contact and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked the paint and drew more FTs, he made one. He was blocked at the rim, looked like a goaltend. He scored a layup in transition when Lonzo hit him with a bounce pass. He made a tech FT. He rolled off the screen and Zo fired a pass to him for the layup. He missed a corner three, short. He drew D FTs trying to finish a layup on the break. He missed a three on a pick-and-pop. Second Half: He missed a three trailing the break. Lonzo found him down court off a made basket for a dunk. He kicked out to Hart for three. He was called for a travel trying to work the pivot after picking up the dribble. He was fouled on a throwdown attempt, he made one FT. Good challenge on Fox in the paint to force a miss. Face up, up fake, dribble and score in the post. He took a pass at the three line, rose up, but then quickly fired to Lance cutting for the And-1 layup. He threw a cross-court pass away. He got tapped on a floater. Stripped on the perimeter for a turnover. He missed a good look at a wing three. He attacked but couldn’t finish. He iso’d, bumped the defender and scored the layup. He fouled a three shooter up 3 with a minute left, uggh. He iso’d on the other end and drained the sideline step-back three. He attacked and couldn’t finish a layup.

Ingram -- -- Painful FT miss in the final seconds that cost them the game. His simply got to get better from the line. Good scoring game, but I actually, didn’t think he played very well down the stretch offensively. He’d run too much clock, pound the dribble and the D would lock in on him. That really bogged things down and we lost momentum. Good experience and I do think he looked better, though, in this game with his responsibility. But he’s young and things were quite choppy with only 2 assists with 5 turnovers and just how ball dominant he was at times. Got to make the offense flow more. He had 16 points on 6-11 shooting in the first half. A lot of work off the dribble to get to the rim or into the midrange. He out-sized Hield on several occasions for scores. His one three ball he sank had a nice step into it and stroke. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-19 shooting (1-4 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 1 foul. He was a +7. The Action: He fumbled a dribble out of bounds on the first play. He swiped a ball and pushed out the break. He attacked from the wing and couldn’t finish. He cleaned up a missed layup on the break. He attacked down the paint to his left and drew FTs, he made one. Too much dribbling and he was stripped. Wild reverse attempt on the break and he wasn’t close. He dunked in transition off a quick inbounds. He attacked in transition to draw FTs, he made both. He muscled his way to the middle of the lane and hit the jumper. He was stripped trying to attack. He attacked the pressure D and got to the front of the rim for a score. He attacked Hield again and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a corner three. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He backed a man down and hit the 15-footer over him. Quick attack on a two-for one and he muscled his way to a short one at the front of the rim, very nice full-court attack (and recognition of the clock situation). Second Half: He drained a three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up. He missed a three from the top of the arc, no hesitation. He missed a tough turnaround. He attacked hard off a screen, pulled up and drained the 15-footer. He was stripped on the perimeter, turnover. Tunnel vision and he was blocked on the pull-up jumper. He worked the two-man game to Chandler next time down for FTs. Turnover getting a ball poked free from behind. He missed a wing three. He attacked and couldn’t finish. Good challenge on D to ignite a break. Fouled with 4.6 left up 1, he bounced in the first one and missed the second long.

Zubac -- -- He missed the LeBron/Rondo playmaking combo off those high screens. Not nearly as many setups for him in the first half like we’ve been seeing with LeBron out. His D got a little better as the game went along, but early on not really a lot of resistance from him. Ultimately, we went to small ball and then Chandler to close the game. Not a lot of love from the refs for Zubac tonight. It seemed like several obvious fouls weren’t called. That cost him several points. They mentioned that after the games, Chandler sits with him on the plane and goes into detail on the bigman game for Zubac. Maybe that’s been helping his growth of late. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-8 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked with a couple dribbles and hit a jumphook. Out of position defensively and he gave up a dunk to Fox when Lonzo got screened. Nice close out to block a three. He freed up Kuzma with a screen, took the pocket pass, spun around a defender and scored a layup. He posted up WCS, backed him down and reversed (more please). He missed a tip-in. Second Half: Wow, hacked completely on a layup with no call (Luke on the refs…probably heard the slap from the other end of the court). Good challenge on one end, but he couldn’t finish the layup on the other. Another good challenge to get a stop. He attacked and coughed up the ball. He couldn’t finish on an interior feed. He kept an offensive board alive, but looked fouled again with no call. Good help D to smother a man.

Hart -- -- He turned and watched a missed three and his man ended up securing the offensive board and it led to a 3-point play in crunch time. We mention Hart doing a lot of little things, but that certainly wasn’t one. Luke was especially annoyed at that play with a minute to go. He also had Chandler yelling at him for missing a tag on help D. He also had a bad help sequence off a shooter. Another play where he switched late that cost us. Some of his defensive miscues drive me a little nuts. All that stuff ads up. Offensively, he drained a couple of threes showing a really quick release. He had a couple of finishes in transition. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He choked a layup on the break. He attacked the closeout and kicked to Kuzma for the three. Late to a switch and he never recovered to give up FTs. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper to start the half. He attacked the rim and couldn’t finish through the contact. Wow, quick release on a kickout to drain the three. Another quick-fire corner three off the swing pass. He slapped down a pass, pushed it out and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. Good recovery to block Fox’s pull-up jumper and ignite the break. Heads up play hustling down court off a deadball/turnover and Lonzo quickly fired it to him on the inbounds for a score. Bad help off a shooter when it wasn’t needed and he gave up a three. No help on the screen-roll and we gave up a dunk, Chandler yelling at him.

Chandler -- -- The lasting memory of this game will be Chandler switching out and trying to contest that game-winning three. Just needed a miss there for the win. With LeBron and Rondo out, Chandler is kind of the vet leader of this group. I appreciated seeing him yell at guys like Hart when they made a mistake defensively. That’s how you learn, and how the D gets better, when guys get held accountable. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-4 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He gave up a putback score. He grabbed the dribble penetration and dunked. He slammed down the KCP missed drive. Great job changing ends and Zo found him for the dunk. Second Half: He tipped out an offensive board and it led to Laker FTs. Moving screen call. He was fouled rolling to the hoop, he made one FT. Good screen next time down and then Lonzo lobbed to him rolling for the dunk. Blindsided for a turnover and score. Illegal screen, rocking Fox hard, looked pretty good. Good challenge to force a miss. Fouled on an interior feed with 4 minutes left up 4, he made both FTs. He regained a possession battling on the offensive glass.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- His lack of attempts from three (or in general) kind of show some of the lack of playmaking in this one. When we don’t have flow in the offense, it tends to hurt his game more than others. We really could have used that one FT he missed tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He forced a turnover with pressure D on the perimeter. He got backdoored ballwatching. He attacked off the three line and missed, but Chandler dunked it back in. Second Half: He attacked off the three line, got his defender on his hip and pulled up to hit the And-1 off glass, he missed the FT. He fumbled a pass under the hoop, then wasn’t aware of the shotlock, violation. He missed a layup on the break, got it back and scored.

Stephenson -- -- He had the team high +9 tonight. He set up Zo for a couple of his buckets and had some moments as one of our backup PGs. He seemed a little too eager to shoot in this one. We needed a little more playmaking. That might have kept the ball in his hands more and less in Ingram’s where he pounded the dribble too much. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He kicked to Zo for a three. He sank a wing three trailing the break. He grabbed a bad pass and outlet to Zo for the dunk. He got tapped on a wing three. He worked off the screen and hit the pull-up 18-footer. He missed a pull-up in early offense. Second Half: Nice cut as Kuzma rose up and Kuz found him at the front of the rim for the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He iso’d, spun and hit the elbow jumper. Poor shot selection on a deep three and he missed.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Quick stint for him as we were closing a quarter. Nothing to report. The Stats: He had 1 foul in 1 minute and was a -2. The Action: He didn’t keep his man off the offensive boards. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caruso -- -- When Hart picked up his fourth foul in the final minute of the third, Luke looked down the bench and dropped an F bomb. Caruso came in with 49 seconds left in the third quarter as Luke then called his number. Strangely, we didn’t put the ball in his hands in his 4 minutes out there. He had a nice offensive board that led to a Laker score. We could have just used some simple playmaking, but he didn’t have a chance. Luke hinted that he might be given more responsibility in the next one. The Stats: He had 1 board and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He crashed the glass, pulled down the miss and it led to a Laker score.

Walton -- -- No LeBron, no Rondo and then he loses Lonzo for a stretch. Tough set of circumstances in this one… Lakers started off slow. Quick timeout with the Lakers down 13-4 after just 2:40. No resistance defensively. The Kings were 6-6… Down 21-12 with 5:23 left, KCP and Chandler in for Zubac and Ingram… They trimmed it to 4 off an 8-0 run and forced a timeout… We gave up a 5-point possession out of that timeout… Hart picked up 2 fouls and sat for Stephenson, Ingram back in for Kuzma… Strong finish to the quarter, turning defense to offense and the Lakers led 34-32 after the first… He started a Zubac, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP, Stephenson lineup. Zo out, Lance/BI running point… Hart in for KCP, score tied with 7:27 left… Zo in for Ingram a few seconds later… Chandler in for Zubac, score tied… Down 1 when BI returned for Lance… KCP in for Hart… Svi in to close the half when the Kings went small in the final minute… The Lakers led 67-61 at the half… Lakers had a 14-7 advantage on the break… Lakers struggling to finish at the rim to start the half and the lead was trimmed to 1. Luke called a timeout… Lakers up 9 when Lonzo had to sit with a cramp in his calf. KCP in for him. Chandler in for Zubac… Kuzma out, Stephenson in. Nervous time… Chandler out, Kuzma in as the Lakers go small… They pushed the lead to 14… Hart with his fourth, Luke cussed and looked at the bench, bringing in Caruso… The Lakers led 95-84 heading into the fourth… He stared the Kuzma, Stephenson, Lonzo, KCP, Caruso lineup to match up with the Kings small ball… Offense sputtering to start the quarter. Just 2 points in 3 minutes. Luke called a timeout as the lead was trimmed… He brought Ingram back in for Caruso and Hart in for Kuzma… Chandler in for Stephenson after a King timeout, Lakers up 12… A 7-0 Kings run cut it to 8 and Luke called a timeout… BI out for Kuzma… Timeout up 1 with 2:49 left. Lakers badly missing someone who can manufacture points to weather the storm… BI in for KCP. Offense stagnating as things slow down and we aren’t getting out in transition… Lonzo scored, but cramped up again with 1:42 left up 3 with the Lakers trying to get to the finish line… Lonzo out, KCP in because of that… Lakers up 2 as BI hits just one FT with 4.5 seconds left. Kings ball… That miss cost them as the Kings hit a three to win…

Thanks DB. Great writeup as always, in spite of how badly the game sucked at the end.

Wish with the clock started Kuz would have thrown one inches from the rafters and let it bounce on the other side of the court. Sounds risky, but better than giving it to BI to close the game.

Thanks DB!

This one stings. They need Lebron back fairly soon. The young core did well but lessons at the expense of playoffs is not something we can afford in pursuit of another max FA.

DB great and faithful reporter!

Thanks for the write-up. This was a fun game to watch but I was afraid the Lakers were going to blow this one and they did.

The Lakers can watch film of this game and learn about themselves going forward. They need to rebound better and make more FTs on a regular basis. If they can improve in these areas, they can win more close games.

Too many costly mistakes at the end and not enough ball flow at the end. This team just needs time to gel and they need to keep these players together. Keep the young ones and add a FA or two. This team needs to start rolling soon.

Hopefully lessons learned??? We shall see.

Cheers DB.

A tough loss after playing rather well for most of the game.
Zo was something special in this one.

Thanks for the write-up, DB.

I thought we had this one in the bag. The young ones had sky high confidence with not even 5 minutes left to play. A lot of things went sour after that, but I thought Ingram was the main culprit for this loss.

This was a particularly brutal stretch:

6:02 De'Aaron Fox makes two point shot 104 - 93
5:48 Brandon Ingram lost ball turnover (Iman Shumpert steals) 104 - 93
5:40 Iman Shumpert makes 25-foot three pointer (Willie Cauley-Stein assists) 104 - 96

3:02 Brandon Ingram enters the game for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 108 - 105
2:58 Brandon Ingram misses 26-foot three point jumper 108 - 105
2:54 Willie Cauley-Stein defensive rebound 108 - 105
2:50 Bogdan Bogdanovic makes two point shot (De'Aaron Fox assists) 108 - 107
2:49 Lakers Full timeout 108 - 107
2:28 Brandon Ingram misses 9-foot jump bank shot 108 - 107

And for the grand finale, missed FTs of course. I had no idea why they gave him the ball for those...

A shame to lose a game that was already in the bag. And against a rival to boot.

Yes the Kings are one of those teams that every time we play them I'd love to see them get annihilated.

Funny, I think that one could almost copy and paste these games

* Great start

* Ball and Kuz teaming well for early scores

* BI doing some great stuff

* Rookie (oops, younger players) making multiple little miscues

* Team battles back from a deficit

* BI/Kuz/Hart keep making small mistakes to lose winnable games

Worst defeat this season by far. 15 point lead 6 min until the end and they lost. I cant wait until we have these young players with 4-5 season under their legs. Hate to watch young team play . They are just not prepared to win games. Experience is everything in NBA.

He’d run too much clock, pound the dribble and the D would lock in on him. That really bogged things down and we lost momentum.

About sums up Ingram. I'm about to give up on ol' .9 assists/turnover (in other words, more turnovers than assists) BI.

He is far too slow and clumsy/sloppy to be the primary ball handler. I'm always on the edge of my seat just waiting for the defender to pick his pocket or make a deflection that leads to a turnover.

Or is that just my observation?

No, the ball handling is sketchy at times. He only makes it worse by not being a threat to pass and getting that tunnel vision to try to beat his man.

But I actually think he's improving some and the more reps he gets while he's dealing with all kinds of D thrown at him will help him in the long run when he realizes how make faster/smarter decisions with the ball.

I've got to imagine it drives Luke a little nuts.

I posted before the game the keys were going to be

1. Slowing down Fox (for the most part good job).
2. Keeping the Kings off the glass (gave up 16 offensive rebounds)

Second chance points off of offensive rebounds killed us last night.

Nice to see Caruso aka @AC_Fresh get some run.

You could totaly hear Lukes F-bomb through the TV screen! I think it was pent up frustration from so many bad calls and no-calls we get around the league.

One foul, against Hart I think, was directly in front of the baseline ref. Like you got one job, one whistle bro!
