Midterms… The Lakers were taught some tough lessons in their loss up in Sacramento. The question tonight would be, what did they learn from that?

They struggled defensively and trailed 68-64 at the half. The Kings got transition going in their favor as the Lakers were slow to match up defensively. But L.A. had a few things going for them.

First, Brandon Ingram was finally looking to pass the ball and set up teammates. Secondly, they had a couple guys in KCP and Hart knocking down shots. And, last but not least, they had JaVale McGee back in the starting lineup.

Led by Ingram’s 9 assists, the offense was clicking. It was just a matter of whether they would start getting stops.

The Lakers were predictable on their screen-roll defense tonight, and the Kings got very comfortable working out of that. In the fourth quarter, they started to clamp down. They had a little more length at the point of attack and didn’t go small like they did to start the second quarter.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game for us on the defensive end, but we scrapped and found a way,” Luke said.

They held the Kings to just 18 points in the fourth to take a 121-114 win.

Ball -- -- He was a -14 in the first half with 6 points and 4 assists. We had 4 minutes with Williams out there that was a -6, but the rest was a poor finish by the Lakers in that first half. Their two-man D on Fox gave up some easy ones as Lonzo trailed over the top of the screens and our bigs didn’t challenge and we weren’t able to recover. In the third quarter as he missed his third and fourth straight FT, he started to fade a bit. The team can’t have that as we’re essentially rudderless with no LeBron or Rondo. Luke called a timeout down 9 and sat him for Svi. Really like the recognition from Luke here. Lonzo was fading and Luke wasn’t having any of it. When Lonzo came back in the fourth, he was more aggressive. Again, though, Luke subbed him out some when it wasn’t working. I think those rebounding numbers often tell the tale on Lonzo’s activity. When he’s boarding, he’s bringing it. Plus, it leads to transition opportunities. When he’s not, the energy and activity isn’t there like tonight. He was a -6 in the second half and finished with the team low -20. Not good. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-14 shooting (1-6 from three, 0-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He kicked to Kuzma for three. He was strip-blocked out of bounds on a drive. He choked a righty layup when Ingram fired a pass to him under the hoop. Short by about two feet on a step-back three that was forced. He posted up Fox and banked the short one over him. Herky-jerky move with a defender on his back and he scored the layup. He couldn’t finish a tough one-handed lob dunk attempt. He scored a layup in traffic off an interior feed. His lob pass was picked off. He was fouled off a give-and-go, he missed both FTs. He missed a halfcourt heave at the buzzer. Second Half: He lobbed to McGee for the dunk to start the half. He ballwatched and gave up a layup. He muscled his way to a layup on the other end. He missed a three on a kickout. Turnover on what looked like a sure layup. He posted up Fox and picked up two quick fouls in a couple of seconds (Fox’s third and fourth with 8 minutes left), he missed both FTs again. He took a pass on a rim run and scored the short turnover. His man went under the screen so he sank the three. Aggressive drive and he kicked to KCP for three. He missed a deep three on a kickout, not a great look. He forced Fox into a brick on iso. He then tried to iso and Fox blocked his forced three on the other end.

Kuzma -- -- He was struggling a bit in this game. But when you look at the numbers, it’s the kind of game that vets have when they struggle. Somehow, he was still productive, scoring 18 on 17 shots. He had a lot of catch and shoot opportunities from three (you pretty much have to take some of those looks). He made 4-10. I’ll take that. He was moving the ball and had 6 assists. I’m not sure if the combination of Kuzma and BI passing as much as they did led to Hart’s big numbers, but it was a factor in that. This was a win ugly game for Kuzma. With offense not pretty, he was battling for 9 boards and trying to do other things. At the end of the game, I like that he gave the ball to KCP in the backcourt for the intentional foul. We learned that the hard way last time we played Sac. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 5-17 shooting (4-10 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He hit Hart in the corner for a three. He missed a wing three. He sank a three of the kickout from Lonzo. He missed a three on a kickout. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up off the two-man game. He couldn’t finish a layup on an inbounds and wanted the foul. He kicked to Hart for the wing three. He faced up and missed a baseline jumper. Wild finish attempt in transition, not close, really forced that one. He attacked and fed Lonzo for a layup. He attacked right and banked the runner off glass. Turnover trying to create in a crowd, three the other way. Second Half: He switched on Fox and forced an airball from the corner. Not close on a corner three in transition. He attacked the paint and kicked to KCP for a three. He blocked a big in the paint and was fouled recovering it for FTs, he made both. He sank a wing three on the kickout from Ingram. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He attacked across the lane and missed the short one. He missed a floater trying to create. He sank a wing three on a swing pass. He gave the ball to KCP in the backcourt for intentional FTs (there you go). He was intentionally fouled with 24 seconds left, he made both.

Ingram -- -- Oh, yeah, I can pass the ball. It seemed like he’d pretty much forgotten this part of the game for a large chunk of the season. This is the learning we hope comes from some of those failures of late. The tunnel vision I was harping on lately was completely gone. “I was too into myself trying to score the basketball too much,” Ingram said after the game. Love it. Love it. Love it. Perfect assessment and realization. He was making a better effort at the start of this game to move the ball. I’m not sure if he was thinking pass first, but he was thinking pass, that’s for sure. Just makes such a big difference for him and the team, but it’s even more important without our playmakers. He ended up with 9 points on 4-6 shooting and 5 assists in the first half. When the D knows they can’t load up on you, the spacing is a little better. They’re second guessing and now you have a few more opportunities. In the second half, he kept it up. He’d finish with 9 assists and approached that triple-double territory. Just look at the midrange game from him tonight. There were only a few jumpers from there and they were open because he was able to really pick his spots. Thus, he ended up with an efficient 9-13 shooting. Late in the game, he started to come into his own and put the team on his back. Combine that offense now with his D, that length that causes problems and the rebounding effort…and you know have him playing the complete game. If he ever forgets and goes back into that tunnel vision mode, have him rewatch this game to remember the balance he had. I don’t know if it was the best game of his career, but best of the season. How about the Magic-like ball-fake on the break that he scored a layup on? Very pretty. (Magic used to create a lane for himself that wasn’t there by doing the same thing.) It really felt like those last few games were teaching opportunities for the Lakers and maybe a lesson was taught or just finally sank in. Let us hope. Luke said this is when Brandon is at his best, showing that complete game. “With him it’s not about looking for his teammates first or not, it’s just making the right play,” Luke said. “And I thought tonight he did that. He seemed to have a joy playing tonight that when he has, it’s a lot of fun to watch whether it’s practice or a game. And that’s what we’ve got to get to.” The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-13 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 9 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He curled and threw a pass out of bounds. He attacked off the wing screen and hit a short one at the front of the rim. He dove to the floor to tap a board to a teammate. He got a switch and hit the wing pull-up jumper. He hit Hart ahead of the pack for an And-1 layup. He iso’d, pumpfaked, jumped and at the last second kicked out to Kuzma for three. He whipped a bullet under the hoop to Lonzo who choked the layup. He probed from the wing and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked in transition, missed the layup but Chandler cleaned up the dribble penetration. He was called for a carry coming off the screen, turnover. He lobbed to Chandler off the screen-roll out of a timeout for the dunk. Nice challenge on a jumper. He grabbed a board, kicked it up, got it back at full speed, ball faked to lose a defender and scored a layup. He was swatted on the break, points the other way. He attacked from the corner and flipped in a layup over his head. Second Half: Nice rebound behind a man. He forced his man into an airball. He didn’t pick up in transition and gave up a dunk. He missed a wing three. He attacked across the lane and hit the short one. He blocked Yogi from behind on a drive. Hesitation drive in transition and he drew FTs off a couple big steps, he made one. He attacked and kicked to Kuzma for three. He missed a corner three. He sank a wing three working off a screen. He blocked a jumper. He attacked in transition, spun around a defender and scored a lefty layup over WCS after getting contact. He got a great bounce on a pull-up trying to create against the clock when a play fell apart. He took a pass and stepped into a wing three and swished, confidence flowing. He was picked and midcourt for a score the other way.

McGee -- -- So glad to have him back on the floor. No coincidence we get a win, either. We just can’t thrive without more vets around our young guys. Nearly a double-double tonight. Just needed another hoop (but I’ll take that Ingram ball fake to McGee and layup any day). A couple of nice hooks from McGee across the lane. The Stats: He scored He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 12 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He worked the pivot a few times and hit the jumphook. He blew a layup off a drive to his right. He grabbed a missed FT and missed a tough jumphook (should have passed that one out). He sank a hook in the middle of the lane. Second Half: He dunked off the lob from Lonzo. He blocked a drive by WCS on the other end. He airballed a baseline turnaround up against the clock. He tried to attack off the dribble and was stripped. He sank a sweeping hook across the lane. He missed a jumphook off the dribble but helped regain the possession.

Hart -- -- Balling tonight. Brilliant offensive first-half performance with 17 points on 6-9 shooting. He sank three threes, including a 4-point play from the wing. He mixed in the attacks off the three line for finishes at the rim. He led the Lakers in scoring in the half and was a +5. He’d finish with the high among the starters with 22. He credited his teammates with finding him. More passing from BI and Kuzma definitely helped here. Loved the attacks at the rim and nice to see him get some calls, too, on those. The Lakers shot 44 threes, Hart sank 3-8. “A lot of them were open shots,” Hart said of the Lakers threes. I’ll take more open threes than BI contested midrange jumpers any day. Hope we see more ball sharing and looks like that. Hart and KCP were thriving. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (3-8 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He sank a corner three on the Lakers first possession. He got tapped on a three next time down. Good job changing ends after a challenge and we found him for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a tough fading elbow jumper flashing to the ball. He missed a three straight away as he rose up and had to balance correct. He took the kickout from Kuzma and hit the And-1 three, he made the FT. He sank a wing three on a swing pass. He curled into the paint to take a pass and muscled in an And-1 layup between defenders, he missed the FT. He up-faked at the three line, attacked the paint and threw it down hard with both hands. He threw away a pass in the backcourt for a dunk. Lazy D and his man scored a layup off a pass under the hoop. Second Half: He attacked in transition, got contact on WCS and scored the layup over him. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He missed a three straight away. Quick attack in early offense and he drew FTs, he made one. He dribbled the ball off his foot, score the other way. Great hustle into the back court to recover a loose ball. Nice help to knock a defensive board to a teammate. He attacked Fox off the dribble and overpowered him for a layup, huge score.

Chandler -- -- Some easy work at the front of the rim rolling off the screens and cleaning up. He had 4 offensive boards in the first half. He was whistled for some illegal D’s and illegal screens tonight. He was ticked about the illegal D’s as he was trying to play drop coverage or even ice a screen once and called for it. Just one of those things where the refs were calling it that way tonight. Probably could go another 20 games without seeing that. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 8 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He screened for Kuzma, rolled and dunked back in the miss. He cleaned up the Ingram dribble penetration. He threw down the lob dunk from Ingram off the set play. He swatted a big and controlled it. He stopped and popped from three on the break and missed at the buzzer. Second Half: Turnover on a bounce pass. Illegal screen, turnover. Another illegal screen, turnover. He tapped out an offensive board and KCP hit a deep three off it. He was blocked trying to finish in a crowd (hit on the arm with no call).

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He seemed like he was feeling it a bit early. You could tell with some of the shot selection that sometimes left a little to be desired early on. He ended up with 7 points on 7 shots in the first half. But the confidence was flowing and KCP stayed aggressive. He’d score 19 in the second half. He’s streaky and I think probably knows it. So he was feeling it early and was firing tonight, making 5-13 from three. A couple of heat checks form three. Some really good ball movement at times by the Lakers and KCP even threw in a couple ball fakes before shooting. On the down side, he got stuffed by the rim on a breakaway where he was ahead of the pack. That was a little embarrassing, but he made up for it later. He had a big finish on a drive to his left in crunch time. Season-high scoring night. “Confidence was through the roof,” he said afterward. Glad he showed up with a big one tonight. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 9-21 shooting (5-13 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He missed a three, it was tapped out, he recovered it, attacked and kicked to Lance for a three. He sank a pull-up at the top of the key off the handoff. He sank a step-back wing three, don’t see that too often from him. Heat-check sideline three next time down. Nice reach on the perimeter, he went to the floor to recover and found a teammate. He attacked left, brought it back to his right and was blocked. He swished a pull-up wing jumper off a high screen. He ballwatched and gave up a dunk. He missed a corner three. He charged in transition. Second Half: He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Nice dive from the weakside, he took the entry pass and powered up the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He swished a wing three off a good Laker passing sequence. He drained a wing three off the ball reversal working off the Chandler screen. He took the tapped out rebound and sank about a 30-foot three (not sure if he was thinking two-for-one or what?). He missed a three at the buzzer. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. He sank a three off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He couldn’t finish a dunk on the break, yikes, rejected by the rim. He didn’t go to the rim on a two-on-one and missed the three (got to try to get a layup on that). He attacked in transition and missed a tough layup. He missed a corner three. He attacked to his left with speed and scored a layup with speed, nice touch on the finish. Intentionally fouled in the backcourt for FTs with 33 seconds left, he made both.

Stephenson -- -- All his action was in the first half. He sank a three, a pull-up from 18 feet and scored a reverse, following up his only miss to score that. So three possessions where he tried to score and he came away with 7 points. Nice. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He swished a sideline three on the kickout from KCP. He sank a pull-up from the top of the key on iso. He missed a three, followed it, got the board and reversed around a big. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Mykhailiuk -- -- After dropping 47 in the G-League he got some brief run tonight. He came in midway through the third quarter for Lonzo who was fading. He had a three that swished, but they called Chandler for a moving screen to erase that. He’d miss his only other attempt, but you can tell that the D is very much concerned with him. I’m loving the growth of his confidence. Even tonight when he was handling the ball, he was playing at the speed of the game. I’m not sure if we move KCP this season, but it would be nice to get Svi some minutes to grow his game. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 assist in 9 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a three coming off the screen. Wow, looked like he drew a charge with no call and the Kings hit a three, not sure what the refs were looking at.

Williams -- -- He came in to start the second quarter. Not sure why we didn’t go back to McGee there in our rotation (or Zu) and make them play our size vs. us trying to match with them. I think Luke’s tendency is to always try to match the opponent versus us dictating to them. We quickly lost the lead and Luke called a timeout. Huge difference with Williams screen setting (or lack of it) compared to the other Laker bigs. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 block and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He blocked a drive, but then fouled a jumper with half a second on the shotclock. He missed a lefty jumphook on iso. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- His critics have been a bit over the top of late with the losses. But losing both LeBron and Rondo is tough with a young crew that has to step into the void and new roles quickly. That’s just not like to happen. That’s probably the worst two players to lose for this team at one time. He was happy to at least have McGee back tonight… McGee out for Hart after 5 minutes, Lakers up 1… The score was tied 20-20 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… KCP in for Lonzo, Lakers down 4… Stephenson in for Kuzma, Lakers up 1… The Lakers led 37-31 after the first quarter… He started a Williams (really?), Kuzma, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo lineup… He called a timeout after quickly losing the lead with that unit… Lakers down 3 with Williams out, Ingram in. Kuzma at center... McGee in, KCP out as WCS returned. So all starters in midway through the quarter… Turnover prone and poor finishing at the rim and they fell back… The Lakers trailed 68-4 at the half. The Kings made 6-11 from three and shot 59% overall for the half... McGee out for Chandler, Lakers down 5… Luke called a timeout down 9… Svi in, Lonzo out with 6:33 left… Lonzo and Chandler out for KCP and Svi. Small ball with Kuz sliding to the C spot… They cut it to 5 after trailing by 11… Chandler back in as we cut it to 3 and they brought back WCS. Svi out… They tied it up… Svi back in for Hart with 3 minutes left… The Lakers trailed 96-92 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, Hart, Svi, KCP, Lonzo unit… They tied it up after a couple minutes… Down 4 after a turnover and score the other way, Luke called a timeout. He brought back in Kuzma, Chandler and Ingram for KCP, McGee and Svi... Down 5, KCP back in for Hart with 6 minutes to go… Chandler out for McGee, Lakers down 5 with 5:24 left. Hart also in for Lonzo. BI to the point… They cut it to 2 and forced a timeout… Lakers up 5 and they call an illegal D on our drop coverage off the two-man game… Timeout up 5 with 1:22 left and the ball. Ingram stripped and we’re scored on in transition… Lakers held on to win… The Lakers won the offensive glass 12-9… They made 15-44 from three (34%)…

Thanks, DB!

I was ready to throw in the towel after they were down yet again late in the 4th. The defense was atrocious, 14 of their last 15 shots were three pointers, and there didn't seem to have any kind of an offensive plan. And yet somehow they righted the ship. Some timely offense and some pretty good defense, especially when compared to the first 3 and a half quater.

Things to note:
1. Game ball to Josh. He kept them in the game in the 1st half and got one of the biggest scores against Fox late in the game.
2. I also thought this was the best game Ingram has played all year. Gone were the blindfolds and he had some pretty nifty passes in there that didn't end with an assist because of the recipient of the ball (Lonzo blew a bunny off his brilliant bullet pass for example). The shot selection was almost perfect and the ball didn't stick in his hands. More of this, please.
3. KCP was huge, but I don't think that you want him shooting the ball +20 times regularly.
4. I still don't know what to make of Lonzo. I have no rational explanation for his shooting woes. Very frustrating to watch.

Revenge game, yay!

Lonzo was garbage tonight. He seems to have the greatest ceiling and floor any given night.

Still seething from that Kings loss 2 games ago.

BI playing LeBron light. Yes, please!
Where the heck did the defence go?
What was Williams doing there? Is Zubac back to DNPs?
Strange to see the difference in confidence and productivity between Kuzma and Lonzo. As if one was an 8-year vet and the other still rookie. Yet, they are from the same draft... Even Hart seems to have more stability. Does the two-year age difference matter so much? Then again Lonzo is the same age as BI...
When KCP and Hart play so well it makes a huge difference.

Good to finish the year with a win. Let's improve next year even further!

Happy New Year!

We have a merry-go-round of inconsistency on this team; this
time it was Lonzo, you'd expect more from him but his
laid back basketball demeanor has always been a kick in my rear
every time I remember we drafted him; well we won which is good.

Obviously, it's hard to fill your best players shoes on any given night.

Thanks DB.

Thanks DB. Missed the game, which is too bad. So glad to see your T&R, I get such a good feel for what I missed. Man, seeing Ingram play intelligent basketball on offense would have been a very cool and unique experience, I hope he does this again. If the light clicks on for BI regarding creating space with his passing and making the right play, I hope he makes this a habit going forward.

Also, I'm guessing it's no coincidence what good games Hart and KCP had when the ball was moving the way it should be.

Good to know McGee can hit the court again. 24 minutes and a strong game.

Hooray for a win while LeBron is healing.

Have a fun but safe New Year's Eve everybody! Go Lakers!
