Roster Issues… I suppose if you are among those few who didn’t want the Lakers to sign LeBron, then this stretch of games has been great. The young core getting more reps without LeBron might be a silver lining as they get more opportunity with the ball.

Of course, getting actual meaningful minutes on a winning team in the playoffs is the kind of growth we hope for them…and that will take LeBron to make it happen this year. Without him and Rondo, they are lottery bound. With them, a playoff team. In any event, the youth can use this stretch of games to grow their skills.

Unfortunately, they lost one of those young players when Kyle Kuzma left in the first half with a back contusion. They could ill-afford to lose him with other key players out.

The injuries seemed to catch up with them in the second half where they scored just 43 points with just 18 in the fourth.

The pace died in the fourth, the half-court offense stalled out and they struggled to control the boards with their small lineups. As their half-court sets failed, they then began to go into iso mode and the problems grew worse.

“Sometimes we get into panic mode when things aren’t going quite the right way,” Ingram said.

They fell 107-100 to the Thunder. With LeBron OR Rondo, they take this one.

“We got to continue to trust in the pass and trust in each other no matter what,” Luke said afterward. He was pleased with how they competed.

Despite all the issues, they actually had a 4-point lead heading into the fourth. They just need bodies back in order to compete the full 48 and close with more consistency. Otherwise, this is what you get with the youth -- up and down inconsistent play with a lot of losses.

Ball -- -- Not really a scoring threat from the start of this game, but he was active early on as we were pushing pace. He had 6 assists and 2 blocks in the first half. In the second half, he faded a bit and so did the Lakers. We really needed to get out in transition with this roster. Or, we needed some playmaking in the half court. He was not providing either. So just 1 assist and 1 point in the second half. That’s just a killer with all the bodies we were missing. The freethrow shooting was awful and he got some boo’s before finishing 1-5 from the line. “We got to fix it,” he said of the FT issues. Defensively, great with a couple of blocks and some really good challenges on the perimeter. Holding Westbrook to 3-20 shooting and 14 points should win you this game, but we were missing too many bodies … and unfortunately, that included Lonzo on offense in the second half. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 form three, 1-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a wide open corner three on a kickout. Strong attack in transition and he muscled in an And-1 layup in with his left at high speed (used his strength well there), he missed the FT badly. He hit McGee on the screen-roll for the short jumphook. He spun in transition and kicked back out to Kuzma who took it for the layup. He broke his man down, drew the D and hit McGee for the And-1 dunk. Good hustle back in transition to block a layup attempt. He blocked Westbrook’s baseline drive. He attacked and missed a layup but Lonzo cleaned it up. He took the pass in transition then fired a bullet to Hart for the layup. Second Half: He may have blocked Westbrook’s Dirk fade attempt, either that or he airballed by a couple feet. He attacked off the screen but couldn’t finish a lefty layup. Quick hands to deflect a backdoor pass to get a stop. Another Westbrook airball on iso. Great challenge on George in the paint to force a miss. He attacked and lobbed to Zubac for the score. He attacked at the end of the quarter and threw it away. He attacked the paint with speed and was hit for FTs, he missed both, ouch. Back to the line and he missed the first and got some boo’s, then sank the second FT.

Kuzma -- -- He struggled to get on track offensively in the first half with just 4 points and going to the locker room a little early at the end of the half. He did have 3 steals in the half. He didn’t start the second half as he was eventually ruled out with the back contusion. We slid Hart to PF and started KCP. Then had Lance backing up Hart. No LeBron, Kuzma, Beasley…it was getting a little thin at the PF spot. They really missed his spark and speed offensively. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a baseline floater. He drew FTs trying to flush around Adams, he made both. He charged in transition. He missed a corner three off an inbounds. He took his eye off a pass and it went out of bounds. He was called for a charge backing down a small in the post. He took the kickout trailing the break and scored a layup. He missed an open step-back three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Ingram -- -- With the offense stalling out in the fourth, he tried to create something on iso and was unsuccessful again and again. I’m not going to be too upset with him on that. The plays we were running were getting shut down. The loss of Kuzma was a bit too much in the second half. Just not enough help and not enough bodies to make things happen with consistency. So the numbers look inefficient and were scoring-wise. The offense stalled out prior to the iso ball in the fourth. That just extended the stall. He finished with 5 assists and was definitely looking to move the ball. Really liked the defensive rebounding efforts and his general D was good for the most part. A couple breakdowns, but he was active. I’m taking the defensive rebounding, happy with that and hope it continues as we move on. He’s showing me he can pull down boards. He’s showing me he can pass the ball. So the bar moves up and when those things disappear for stretches or games, we’ll know he’s not maximizing his talents. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-21 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 5 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: Off the mark on a kickout, turnover. He attacked Westbrook and drew FTs, he made one. He broke down the D and hit McGee for a dunk. He couldn’t finish a drive in transition. He iso’d and missed a pull-up from the FT line. He attacked in transition and stretched out over the defender for a layup. He missed a three straight away. He flashed to the ball, went up like he was going to shoot and hit Chandler for the dunk instead. He attacked off a kickout and banked in a runner. Defensive board in a crowd and he outlet before falling out of bounds. He iso’d and bricked the pull-up. He threw a pass away. He cut across the double screen at the FT line, took the pass, attacked and threw down a reverse jam (George under the hoop couldn’t help). Quick attack in transition and he scored a layup over the D. Second Half: He drew the D and hit McGee with a pocket pass for a layup. He missed an open wing three. He missed a tricky layup attempt around Adams. He swished an elbow pull-up when his man went under the screen. Heads up passing off the dribble to Zubac changing ends with speed for a dunk. He took a post feed and hit the short fade in the lane. He sank a pull-up FT jumper over the smaller guard. He missed a baseline pull-up. He blocked a short one from behind to ignite a break. He attacked and had the ball stripped off him. He iso’d and missed a fade (should have attacked quickly when he first got the ball). He iso’d and bricked the pull-up. Great challenge and then we was fouled on the defensive board. He iso’d and was picked. He bricked a long pull-up. He missed a tough turnaround. He attacked spun and missed the turnaround. Poor D and he gave up a lob dunk. He was stripped on the other end. He sank a step-through jumper.

McGee -- -- He had 11 points on 5-9 shooting and 3 blocks in the first half in his 11 minutes. Just 2 of 7 in the second half as he got blocked on a couple soft attempts and missed some awkward ones. With the offense not clicking, that brought out some of the ugliness with his game. That put him in awkward positions versus lob finishes or dumpoffs to him in the dunker positions. So I don’t blame him for some of those issues and misses. Defensively, he finished with 4 blocks. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-16 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He was blocked on a drop step on iso. He rejected a dunk attempt. He missed a jumphook on iso. He dunked off the drive and dish from BI. Short jumphook off the screen-roll. Awkward jumphook on the next one. He drew FTs on a dunk attempt off the screen-roll, he missed both. He took the feed from Lonzo and threw down the And-1 dunk, he made the FT. He crashed the glass and cleaned up the Lonzo dribble penetration. He rejected Westbrook’s throwdown attempt (Westbrook picked up a tech). He missed a scoop on a roll to the hoop, then scored the putback. Second Half: He scored a layup off the pocket pass from Ingram. He missed a short one in the paint. Quick off his feet to help Lonzo, and he rejected George’s layup off the glass. Moving screen, turnover. He worked the pivot and reversed around Adams. He missed a rushed floater trying to beat the shotclock. He missed an open KCP, then missed a weird hook attempt. He was blocked on a soft layup attempt.

Hart -- -- We needed him to hit some perimeter shots in this one. He was stone cold for most of the game until finally sinking a three. He finished 1-8 from three. When the offense stalled out in the fourth, he was really the only one sparking the rare transition opportunities we had. He’d push out boards and make something happen. In the half court, we were dead on arrival in that quarter. Really, the only guy I saw imposing our pace on the opponent in the fourth. Some good looks throughout the game, just couldn’t knock them down. With Kuzma out we had to run him at PF. He was battling on the glass and led the team with 15. Great job. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-16 shooting (1-8 from three, 2-4 from the line) The Action: He missed a three straight away. He missed a floater creating off a high screen. He missed an open wing screen. Awful cross-court feed, turnover. Aggressive attack in transition and he drew George’s second foul, he made one FT. He missed a deep three. He iso’d and missed a long pull-up jumper with the clock low. He missed a wing three. He took the cross-court feed from Lonzo in transition and scored a layup. Second Half: He attacked the paint and muscled in a layup. He missed a wide open wing three. Pitch out to KCP for a three. He rejected Westbrook’s drive. He was blocked on a reverse. He missed an open wing three. He didn’t see KCP wide open under the hoop. Good job pushing out a rebound and he scored a layup. He pushed out another board with speed and took out the challenging Thunder player on his way to FTs, he made one. He sank a step-back three over Adams out of a timeout. He missed a three straight away. He sank a concession pull-up jumper in the paint.

Chandler -- -- His back acted up so we went to Zubac in the second half. Chandler came in late in the fourth again and probably ended the Lakers chances with a flagrant-foul with a couple minutes left. That was the dagger. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-2 shooting (3-4 form the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He dunked off the interior feed from Ingram. He drew FTs on a two-man sequence, he made both. He gave up a layup in the post. He dunked off the great drive and dish from Lance. He drew FTs off a ball tapped to him, he made one. Second Half: Down 7 with 2 minutes left, he gave up a flagrant-1 not making a play on the ball while taking a foul. That pretty much was the nail in the coffin.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Another big scoring game from him off the bench. He had 18 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half to lead the Lakers. He sank three of six attempts from three in the first half, but also made 7-8 from the line to get that scoring efficiency. As hot as he was early on, in the fourth quarter some of his teammates missed him when he was wide open under the hoop or in the corner. When the offense was clicking in the first half, so was he. When it was stumbling, he didn’t get the good looks. Defensively, some breakdowns at times. He had a nice steal for a dunk in the first half. Not enough of that in the second half for the Lakers. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 6-14 shooting (5-11 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. Not close on a forced three out of a timeout. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He iso’d on the wing and drew FTs on the pull-up, he made both. He missed a three in transition. He missed a wing three on a kickout shortly later. Great job on an inbounds drawing contact in the backcourt and a foul with 0.7 left in the quarter, he made both FTs. He drained a three in transition. He jumped a passing lane and took it for the dunk. He swished a wing three. Looked like he made up his mind to pass on a play and threw it away. He missed a tech FT. He made a tech FT. Second Half: He missed a floater, but got it back on the follow. He sank a quick-fire wing three on a pitch out. He couldn’t finish a lefty layup. He attacked off the screen and hit Zubac with a pocket pass for the dunk. He missed a wing three. He missed a three in transition. He missed an off-balance three. He attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He sank a corner three.

Stephenson -- -- He was a +8 in the first half with some nice passing sequences. He got the Thunder riled up with some of his after-the-play antics. That kind of amped up the atmosphere a little early on (which I think is a good thing for the young guys when you can get it in the regular season). Looked like he was our backup PF behind Hart in the second half with Kuzma out for the half. I might not have minded running him off the screens with the ball a little in the fourth quarter to see if he could create for others some more, but that didn’t happen. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in the second half. He was a +2.The Action: He hit KCP for a corner three. He hit McGee rolling for FTs. Turnover trying to hit McGee rolling again (too hot a pass). He pushed out the break and hit KCP for three. He missed a corner three. He iso’d and drained a step-back three. He iso’d, spun to lose a defender and then wrapped a pass around the help D to Chandler for the dunk. He pushed out a rebound to ignite a break. He was picked by George, then gave up an And-1 on the other end. He missed a step-back three on iso at the end of the half (should have attacked George off the dribble). Second Half: He missed a jumphook. He missed a wing three (make the extra pass to Svi, please).

Mykhailiuk -- -- He came in late in the third quarter as we slid KCP in with the starters with Kuzma out to start the second half. He looked aggressive and ready to ball, quickly sinking a jumper and then attacking for a layup. Love that. Kid has lost that early season deer in the headlights and is just looking for minutes now. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He took the Zubac handoff and swished the 17-footer. He attacked off the three line and scored the soaring lefty layup over the help D. He missed a step-back from 16 feet out. He missed a 70-footer at the buzzer. He drew FTs on a bustout, he made one (fading a little on the second). He attacked the paint, left his feet to pass and came down with it before giving it up, turnover. XXX

Zubac -- -- He got into the rotation early in the second half and immediately made an impact. He challenged a shot on one end and out ran Adams to the other and threw down a dunk. Some good screen-roll action, as well. We could have used some of that late in the game. He was up for the challenge tonight. Without our usual playmakers, he was able to make something happen. Not easy for this team right now. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Good challenge to contest on help on one end, then he busted down court on the other, took the feed and crammed down a two-handed dunk over Adams’ track down. He took out George on a screen, rolled to the hoop, took the pass from KCP and dunked. He was stripped on a FT rebound. He grabbed the lob and scored a layup. He tipped in a miss at the front of the rim.

Walton -- -- Just too many injured bodies. Losing Kuzma for the second half hurt… Lakers down 10-7 when Chandler came in for McGee… Starters struggling to hit open looks (3-14 shooting) and they trailed by 5… KCP in for Lonzo… Lakers got George’s third foul of the first quarter with 3 minutes left (not sure why they left him in). Fans loving it… Stephenson in for Kuzma, Lakers down 2… They were tied 25-25 after the first quarter (both teams were a combined 2-18 from three)… He started a McGee, Kuzma, Stephenson, KCP, Ball lineup… Ingram in for Lance with 7 minutes left, Lakers up 6… Lakers up 1, Kuzma in the locker room, Hart at PF and Chandler now in for McGee… A couple runs by each team at the end of the half. Lakers kicking up their transition game… The Lakers trailed 59-57 at the half. The Lakers shot 15-22 from the line, the Thunder 6-9… KCP to start for Kuzma… Zubac in for McGee after 5 minutes, score tied… Svi in for KCP, Lakers up 3… Zubac, Hart, Svi, Stephenson and Lonzo in with 2:24 left, Lakers up 1… The Lakers led 82-78 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Ingram, Svi, KCP, Stephenson lineup… Down 3 after 3 minutes, Luke called a timeout. He went back to his second half starters with 8:45 left… Lakers in the bonus with 7 minutes left… Offense stalling out as their pet plays were getting denied and they started to resort to iso ball… Lakers only scored 6 points in the first 7 minutes of the quarter, but were only down 3 points after Hart scored a layup creating a rare transition opportunity… Chandler in… Without Kuzma, LeBron and even Rondo if he was available, this unit was really challenged to create points in the halfcourt… So he brought back in Stephenson for Lonzo…

First! thanks db.
Lonzo having the best plus Minus on the team is crazy- but all people seem to do is focus on his free throws.

No point really to watch the games at the moment without LBJ. This team without him and Rondo is just too young too compete with teams with superstars. Its actually really simple. Without LBJ we cannot win any close games. We won against Sac because they also do not have any superstar. Just waiting for LBJ and Rondo to come back at this moment really.

My thoughts exactly. It's really just watching to support the team but when it got to be 4th quarter, we're down 3 then went down 5 you knew the game was over. Team is too young and can't close it out without LeBron out there and Rondo as well.

Thanks DB. Our kids aren't on THAT level yet. No closers here.
They kept the game close, though. Props to them.

KCP seems to be on a roll at least that is positive.

Zo needs to be more consistent.

Kuz back hurts.

Maybe developing some low post plays for Zubac to get him at the rim or cleaner outside shots will he tried in the future

Here's where +/- is a little misleading. Lonzo didn't play in the last 3.5 minutes of the game, probably due to his inability to shoot from the field and the line. OKC closes out. Game over.

The kids played well for 3Q's. Injuries caught up to them and they couldn't compete for a full 48. FT shooting is a problem, especially when you're so depleted.

Hard to fault our young guys for losing this one. OKC has the best defense in the lague, George is playing out of his mind, and we were missing two of our core players (which was soon 3 when Kuzma went down). The 1st half was beautiful, the thrid quater was also good (losing the lead then getting it back). I was kind of waiting for the wheels to fall off, and they did when BI got too tired (he played a very measured game up to that point, in my opinion). With Lonzo MIA on offense again, you don't have a single competent ball handler out there and the guys just seemed to play hot potato for the rest of the way.

I like Lonzo's defense, but 3 points with 3 (!) of our key offensive players out and 45% (!!!) FT shooting will not earn you the starting spot playing one of the most important positions in basketball. I have a hard time recalling such an offensively inept player. You don't even have to be great or good, for crying out loud - average will do just fine for starters.

It appeared that Lonzo was not aggressive/willing/able to drive into the paint to make OKC’s defense move hence not in the game at the end

As DB noted, KCP wasn’t given the ball enough when he was open in the fourth quarter

As we have found out, BI is not the Black Mamba - few are. When everybody knows that BI is going to shoot - one wonders why it was “One and Out” (recognizing Luke’s words that they were sending everybody to the boards)

That Ingram isolation play they run so much is a real headscratcher. I can understand going to it late in the clock if nothing better is available but it makes no sense to come down court with the intention of having Ingram take a contested 2 pointer. They never get offensive rebounds on it because everyone has to clear out so its just a low percentage do or die play.
