Making Things Worse… With the injuries, Luke decided to experiment with a poor fitting Zubac/McGee front court to start the game.

That went about as you would expect. The Lakers quickly trailed by 14 points before he decided to bring in Beasley at PF.

The damage was done. But we doubled down the twin tower lineup to close the first and the Timberwolves went on another run.

With the hole dug, the Lakers were down big the rest of the day and fighting to get out of it. They had some brief success with a zone as they were getting desperate, but the game was never within reach.

The Lakers were a -21 on about 8 minutes with those two center lineups. They may not have won this one anyway, but that gave them no chance. The Lakers fell 108-86.

Ball -- -- Can we give him a little Where’s Waldo outfit to put on in games like this? Just look at the first half notes. Very few notes and very little action. When we’ve got so many impact players out, he simply has to step into the void more. He was 0-1 in the first half with no points. Defensively, he was not making an impact, either. You have to make opponents feel you. He had the team-low -20 in the first half, but to be fair he spent a good chunk of time with two bigs on the floor. But he simply was not aggressive. In the second half, he had the first couple of shots I think probably as a result of someone telling him he needed to pick it up, but was a total nonfactor. Get yourself in the game. I think he’s a bit lost because the LeBron two-man game was the thing, then Kuzma on the two-man game. Now he’s just floating around without them. No freethrows tonight, another area where he’s mentally checked out. “It didn’t seem like we engaged ourselves in the fight until we got into the second unit,” Luke said tonight. He added “At some point we need more passion, more fight.” He didn’t name names, but that seemed directed at Lonzo. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He attacked off the three line and set up Zubac for FTs. He missed a step-back three. He hit Beasley for a layup off the two-man sequence. Second Half: Not close on a floater, no surprise (he’s shooting about 7% on these). He missed a wing three next time down. He kicked out to Beasley for a three. He got deep penetration, picked up the dribble and threw the kickout several feet over the head of Hart. He was blocked on the break. He probed and bounced to Chandler for FTs.

Ingram -- -- He led the team with 13 points on 5-12 shooting in the first half. No assists, but at least you felt him a little out there compared to their other young guys. Overall, though, it just felt like he was trying to continually run through brick walls. He had just a single assist to go with 3 turnovers. Really ineffective again. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-16 shooting (3-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He attacked, got bumped a couple times and missed the layup. He attacked across the lane, brought it back to his strong hand and was promptly blocked. He traveled on an inbounds, turnover. He attacked and missed a short running bank. He attacked a crowd and threw it away, turnover. His layup was goaltended. He skied for a defensive board, pushed it out and scored a layup. He spun, missed a layup but got it back. He slithered his way through a crowd and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He took the outlet, attacked the smaller guard and scored a layup. He held the ball and bricked the jumper, but got it back and was fortunate to earn a blocking foul on the drive, he made both FTs. He forced up a short jumper in early offense with a man all over him and missed. Ahead of the pack on the break and he dunked when Hart hit him. Second Half: He missed a forced pull-up from the FT line, points the other way. Off the mark on an interior pass, turnover. Fortunate again to get a blocking foul trying to back a man down, not sure why that wasn’t a charge (unless they thought it was a flop), he missed both so just like a turnover anyway. He found Beasley trailing the break for a score. Good open look at a pull-up from the elbow, but he missed. He attacked the paint and was blocked from behind. He missed a tough pumping jumper trying to be the shotclock.

McGee -- -- Awful tonight. His D looked sluggish and tired. He led the team with the -23 in just 16 minutes. Yes, some poor lineup construction at times, but that shouldn’t impact your D as much as it did. The Stats: He scored He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He missed a jumphook trying to create. He missed a finger roll. He put the ball down in the post and was stripped. No help on the guard penetration. He threw a pass out of bounds. He missed a corner three on a kickout at the end of the half. Second Half: No box out and he gave up a dunk. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Beasley, he made both. He gave up another offensive board and score to a smaller man.

Hart -- -- A lot of congestion in the paint in this one which made it difficult to drive and finish for Hart sometimes. So some issues trying to finish around the rim. I’ll take the 2-5 from three, seemed like he shot worse than that. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-12 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He attacked from the corner and threw it away. Not close on a baseline pull-up. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He missed a midrange pull-up jumper badly. He swished a corner three on a kickout from Beasley. He attacked a crowd and missed a layup. He pushed out a rebound and was blocked. He missed an open three in transition. He missed a wing three, got it back, attacked and scored the layup. He hit Ingram on the break for a dunk. Second Half: He was blocked in transition. He curled into the paint too deep and was rejected again. He stole a pass hustling back on D and drew FTs, he made both. He missed an open wing three.

Zubac -- -- Can’t blame him for the bad start we got off to. Just an ill-conceived idea to start him. When he was in more traditional lineups he did fine even with the lack of point guard play in this game. He seemed a little confused with the zone D we went to late in the game. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-6 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He drew FTs on the first possession trying to throwdown off the drive and dish from Lonzo, he made one. He missed a baseline jumper. He was blocked on a putback. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made both. He threw an outlet away in the backcourt. Wow, bad call on a 3-second violation to erase a dunk from him (he clearly bounced out of the lane with both feet, then back in, then took the pass). Second Half: He dunked off the lob from Svi. He got blocked under the hoop getting a little too far under the backboard. He dunked off the pocket pass from Svi. He dunked off the drive and dish from Bonga.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- It drove me a little nuts how late we brought him in this game. With our lack of playmaking, you really want to consider starting him. We have set plays were we need someone coming off screens. He’s the best at that. Without him on the floor, those plays just aren’t as dynamic and the offense is very flat. Not enough shots for him tonight. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He curled to the elbow, took the pass and hit the jumper. He swished a baseline jumper off the inbounds. His pass was picked off then he didn’t stop the ball and gave up a layup. He missed a pull-up jumper. Second Half: He swished a baseline jumper on the inbounds. He charged on a floater. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He sank a wing three off the screen to take that pass. He missed a wing three.

Chandler -- -- On a cold road game in Minnesota where we are down big before he even enters the game, got to give Tyson some props for playing hard. He battled on the glass (10 boards, including 5 offensive). He anchored the zone well to help one of our only small surges in the game. That might be one of the positives from this game is we actually dialed in a semi-competent zone lineup with him in it. He was barking orders and communicating well in that. Nice effort from the vet. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a tip in he probably should have had. He dunked off the lob from Stephenson in transition. He left a three shooter open and gave up a three. Second Half: He threw down a putback dunk. He drew FTs on the bounce pass from Zo, he made one. He kept an offensive board alive. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Svi, he made one.

Stephenson -- -- He could have had a much bigger game but was awful from the freethrow line. It’s contagious, I guess. Probably should have finished with about 18 points and the 6 assists. Which would be some very good production off the bench. Not great on D, but at least competing. The vet lineups looked much more competitive than the ones with our young guys. He ended up with the most minutes as Luke didn’t bring back Lonzo after his second-half stint. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-10 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He missed a layup on a drive left. He kicked to Hart for a three. He lobbed to Chandler in transition for a dunk. He attacked and stretched out with his left to earn FTs, he missed both. He attacked down the paint, hung and missed (probably could have dunked it). He crossed over and hit the 15-footer. He was fouled on a drive and made one FT. He attacked and muscled his way for a layup. He deflected a pass off a player to get a stop. Fell asleep on D and we gave up a lob dunk. He attacked and lost the ball, turnover, score the other way. He attacked and muscled his way to a layup. Second Half: He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He attacked the paint, took contact and scored the And-1 after with a scooping layup, he made the FT. He hit Moe on the pick and pop for the three. He attacked and muscled his way to another And-1 layup, he missed the FT way short. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to hit a roll man, not close. He probed and missed a floater. He attacked and went down hard hanging to draw the contact, he missed both. He missed a wing three. Intentionally fouled he made a couple of FTs.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He didn’t get any first half run, but we rolled him out there in the second half and had some full G-League action going with Wagner, Zu, Svi and Bonga by the time this one was over. They probably could have really used Caruso in this game because Lonzo was not an effective PG. The game is starting to look a bit easier for Svi. He still gets caught a little off guard, but his decision making has been much, much quicker as the season has gone along. He had a couple nice feeds to Zu for dunks and also set up Chandler for FTs. So some good decision making there. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and threw it away. He knocked a ball loose on help. He attacked and fed Chandler for FTs. He missed a three to start the fourth. He cut of Zu’s screen, took the pass, attacked and lobbed to him for the dunk. He pushed it up and swished the jumper from the top of the key. He missed a tough lefty layup. He crossed over and hit the runner. He missed a three off a handoff. Pocket pass to Zubac for a dunk.

Beasley -- -- He had three fouls in the first half to limit his availability some. But when he was out there in the first half, he was a +1 in his 10 minutes. Just having a more traditional PF in the mix and a scorer made a difference. He got the start in the second half after our failed experiment in the first. He and Towns were mixing it up a little and both picked up techs in this one. He sank a three (seems rare when he takes them, but he took three tonight and passed up on probably another three or four). Too turnover prone as the middle of the floor was crowded. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He attacked baseline with the clock low and scored on a reverse. He forced a pass into the paint, turnover. Quick bounce pass as he rolled to the hoop and he scored a layup. He attacked and pushed with the off arm for a charge. He blocked a drive. He kept an offensive board alive. He attacked and missed the backhand layup. He attacked from the wing and threw down the dunk. He attacked and kicked across court to Hart for three. He missed an open corner three. He picked up a tech barking at Towns, then Towns picked one up a second later. Second Half: He swished a corner three on a kickout. He attacked from the corner and fed McGee for FTs. Way long on a corner three. He ballwatched and his man cut behind him for a dunk. He tied up a man in the paint. He scored a layup trailing the break. He attacked from the corner and was stripped. He couldn’t handle a long outlet, turnover. He pushed up the break and threw it away.

Wagner -- -- Good minutes from Moe. He was mixing things up. Not always effective, but at least competing how they need to with all the players out. They needed his shot of energy on the floor. He looked good in the zone with his length and active hands. A little foul-prone, but that’s fine. Offensively, we ran a play for him at PF that we usually run for Kuzma and he sank his only made three off that. He also showed his pet move on the behind-the-back dribble to score an And-1. Maybe that will give Luke a little more trust to go with him at PF versus play too small or too big, as was the case today. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 2 turnover sand 5 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He pumpfaked then missed a three straight away. He kept an offensive board alive. Nice closeout and challenge to force a miss. He attacked, spun to the middle and hit the one-hander from about 12 feet out. He missed a tip-in attempt. Second Half: He knocked a ball loose in the zone D and went to the floor to recover and get tied up, but then he fouled on the jumpball. He sank a pick and pop three off the double drag screen with Stephenson. He got tripped on a kickout on a three to get a stop. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t flip in a soft layup over his head. He forced an airball on a corner three challenge. He traveled off the three line on a ball fake. He got tapped on a layup in transition, got to finish that. He missed a wing three. He missed a three straight away. He tied up Towns battling in the post (quick whistle). He attacked right, went back left behind his back and scored the And-1 with his left, he made the FT. He blocked a man from behind, but lost the ball on the other end.

Bonga -- -- He came in with about 5 minutes left to play. They at least got to go against Minny starters despite being down huge. Lol. So some quality minutes slipped in there for him. He tallied an assist on a drive and dish to Zu. When challenged on D, he moved his feet well. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 assist in 5 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and missed the floater. He attacked from the corner and fed Zubac for a dunk.

Walton -- -- Luke outthinking himself in this one. Both Zubac and McGee starting. Wow. He didn’t like how we were beat up on the glass previously against this team… The Lakers quickly fell behind 13-1. Timeout. Experiment over? No... So many issues with this lineup. Poor offensive spacing, poor transition D and having to make tougher decisions defensively more often among the bigger ones…Beasley finally in at PF down 14 after 4 minutes… Ingram with 2 fouls in less than 5 minutes and he sat for Stephenson… Lakers down 22-3 after 6 minutes. Another timeout… We’re a bad team with our injuries right now and I don’t expect to win a lot of games, but Luke definitely made this one worse to start… Chandler in for McGee… KCP finally in for Ball down 19 after 7 minutes… They forced a timeout down 28-12 after stringing together a few scores… Moe in with 41 seconds left for Beasley… The Lakers trailed 35-19 after the first quarter. Basically, they played even after that short Zubac/McGee unit… He started a Zubac, Wagner, Ingram, KCP, Stephenson lineup… Lonzo in for Lance down 18… McGee in for Zubac, Beasley in for Moe down 19 with 7 minutes left… Starters now in with Beasley instead of Zubac… Chandler in for Beasley down 14. So McGee/Chandler now. Yikes. What about Moe again?… Ingram sparking them a little and the Lakers cut it down a basket to 12 with 3:28 left to force a timeout… TWolves picking on our bigs defensively. A 7-0 run for the Wolves to end the half… The Lakers trailed 64-45 at the half… He went to Beasley to start the second half… McGee out after 3 minutes, playing awful on D. Chandler in down 23… Moe, KCP, Stephenson in for Beasley, Hart and Lonzo down 20 with 4:45 left…. Svi in for Ingram down 23… Lakers in a zone out of a timeout… The zone helped them cut the lead to 83-68 heading into the fourth… Same unit but Zu in for Chandler… They trimmed it 13 briefly… Moe out for Beasley down 16 with 8:43 left… Chandler in for Zubac… Bonga in finally with about 5 minutes left to play, Lakers down 25…

First.

Thanks, DB

Sick of Luke. Anyone who thinks that starting lineup is a good idea needs to go.

Flashbacks to last year with our team right now. No talent on the floor...and Luke just poured gasoline on the dumpster fire to start this game.

We're missing 3 of our best players, I can't believe that anyone expects a different outcome. Until we get LBJ Kuzma, and even Rondo, we're going to struggle. And there is nothing any coach can do about it. You could stick Steve Kerr as the coach and the outcomes wouldn't have been different.

The team is hurt right now, but instead of helping the team to maximize what talent we do have and play better, Luke has been shooting the team in the leg to start every game and 4th quarter and make it that much harder.

Losing games is one thing. We had some games where we came close and just lost it and OK that happens. Speaking for myself I DO expect our team to go out there and complete and play hard and look competent which has not been happening of late and that’s fairly unsatisfactory to see.

Thanks for the write up DB!

Sorry but I am on the fire Luke bandwagon. McGee and Zubac but no KCP in the starting lineup? At least put KCP in to spread the floor.

This "we came out with low energy at the beginning of the game" is getting repetitive. I get that the players own it but when it happens over and over and over again it becomes a Luke issue. I do not see this when I watch the Spurs, Celtics, 76'ers, or the Raptors. Win or lose they play with energy.

Starting to warm up to the idea of keeping Zubac past this season. He is turning in some solid but unspectacular performances despite some poor PG play. He just needs to stay aggressive and impose his body down low.

Likes the energy the vets off the bench (Lance, Beasley, Chandler). Beasley should have started at the 4 instead of Zubac.

Starters shot 11 for 41 from the floor. Take Zubac out (3 of 6) and our normal starters were 8 for 35 from the floor.

The difference in the efficacy of the zone going from Chandler to Zubac was crazy. Chandler looks super washed but you can still see impact on that end.

Glad I missed the last 2 games. We've needed to weather the storm better than this during the injuries. Could make it hard to sneak in the playoffs in this packed West. Crazy how it just seemed we were like a game and half back of 1st to wherever the hell we are now.

Heal up Kuz, Rondo, LeBron. Team could use some vocal leaders right now.

The silver lining in all this is we are definitely on our way towards establishing a hierarchy and fitting players in specific roles.

Sad, but so true

Luke is truly making a case to be replaced in the offseason.

Thanks, DB!

I can just say one thing. I am sick of watching kids playing for Lakers. I hope that they will trade everyone really soon because if you have LBJ you cannot have kids. Its simple. There is no point. He is 34 years old. You cannot combine him with bunch of kids.

Yeah, I totally agree. Can't put this on Luke
This game is more revealing about Konzo and Bi, than it is about Luke.

It appears that these well-meaning talented rookies are uncomfortable/fearful on taking the leadership mantel - especially Ball. Surprisingly since the injuries provided ample PT at their disposal without looking over their heads. Mistakes are to be expected, energy/effort is also expected.

Maybe BI/Ball are unable to make other on the court accountable because they are making inexcusable mistakes hence lack the credibility of making others accountable
