Just reflecting on the "brain trust" that have served this franchise as executives and coaches:

John Kundla - 6 rings as Lakers head coach, drafted Baylor as GM.

Pete Newell - invented "modern basketball", won NCAA & Olympics, as Lakers GM traded for Kareem.

Bill Sharman - won 4 rings as an NBA player, 3 as a head coach and 5 as Lakers GM/President. BUILT SHOWTIME.

Fred Schaus - traded for Wilt, hired Sharman, traded for Goodrich.

Tex Winter - perfected Triangle offense, 9 rings as AC/consultant, mentored Sharman, Phil Jackson, others.

Jerry West - retooled Showtime for Back2Back championship, BUILT THREEPEAT, consultant for GSW run.

Phil Jackson - 11 rings as HC plus 1 with Knicks (should be 2, but Knicks lack class).

Mitch Kupchak - retooled Lakers for Back2Back in 08/09 and 09/10.

Not to mention visionary owners like Bob Short (moved to LA), Jack Kent Cooke (built the FABULOUS FORUM!) & Jerry Buss (10 rings as owner).

We won one the season before the Lakers joined the BAA (now NBA). Part of the agreement when the Lakers came in was that we would "ignore" our connections to other leagues, so the NBA does not recognize the 1947 PBLA championship . . . but we were the acknowledged best team in the world that year and Kundla was the coach.

Sid Hartman! GM of the early Lakers, brought in Mikan. Hired Kundla. Had a deal to get the pick that became Bill Russell but owner killed it. And most improbably, is STILL a full-time columnist for the Star Tribune, as he nears 100.
