Pace and Fouls… The Lakers struggled to impose their pace on this game.

In the first half, the Jazz did a good job taking fouls to prevent Laker breakaways. And the Lakers did their usual job of not making freethrows to make that a more effective strategy.

After Lonzo picked up his third foul early in the second quarter and had to sit, the Lakers offense stagnated completely, going without a field goal for 6 minutes. They were down by 19 at the half.

Lonzo helped ignite the Lakers in the third quarter, cutting the lead in half. They were picking up the pace, hitting the glass hard on both ends and making things happen.

Then the refs went on their own run. They called Lonzo for his fifth foul, forcing him to sit with the Lakers down 11. Then a series of calls and no calls went against L.A. and the momentum was lost.

“We could never get a rhythm going. We couldn’t find it,” Luke said.

Without LeBron or Rondo to help operate in the half court. It’s tough. Remove Zo from the equation and we’re in deep trouble. The Lakers fell 113-95.

The Lakers had just 7 points on the break, the Jazz just 2 as the pace stayed in their favor all night.

Ball -- -- The foul trouble to Lonzo really took the Lakers out of this one. We were a -1 when he was on the floor and a -17 when he was off. After he sat in the second quarter, the Lakers offense just stagnated, going without a field goal for 6 minutes. He sparked the team in the third quarter, pushing pace, hitting the offensive boards, just making things happen. As they trimmed the lead in half and had momentum, he got hit with more fouls and had to sit. That was essentially the game right there. Just not enough playmakers with all our injuries. So when we lose him, it’s just trouble. Scoring-wise, he wasn’t very effective, but his aggressiveness is what you liked. Luke said he thought his energy was great. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-13 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He knocked a pass loose on the perimeter to get a stop. He put his man in jail and swished a 10-footer. He attacked and found McGee with an interior feed for a short one. Not close on a step-back three. He missed a deep three on a kickout. He probed and missed the 8-footer. He bricked a wing three. He broke down the D, drew the big and found Zubac for a layup. Second Half: Great hustle on the offensive glass to recover a rebound and bounce a pass to Kuzma for a dunk. He missed a short one, fought to get it back and was fouled. He swished a three straight away. He pushed out with speed but couldn’t finish the layup, Hart tried to tip it, missed and Lonzo got back into the play to clean up Hart’s miss. He pushed it out and hit Kuzma for FTs. Great challenge avoiding a foul and getting a miss. Quick board and outlet to Beasley for a dunk. He couldn’t finish a lob. He was rejected out of bounds in transition. He attacked and kicked to Beasley for the short one. He missed a three when the D went under the screen.

Kuzma -- -- He struggled to get going tonight. Just missed a lot of chippies and couldn’t connect from three. The offensive flow was choppy and we couldn’t get out in transition. Even still, he was just off the mark on some he usually makes. He should have been to the line more, so some of those “misses” should have been FTs, making him a little more efficient. I’d say there were three shots for 7 FTs he probably should have had. Even still, he struggled a bit tonight. He would have still been around 4-15 shooting even with those, but probably around 17 points or so. He was a bit frustrated late in the game because of that. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-18 shooting (0-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a face-up corner three. His pass was picked off in the paint. He was blocked from behind on a drive. He missed a drive but Chandler cleaned it up. He curled into the paint and drew contact for FTs, he made one (finally scoring with 6 minutes left in the second quarter). He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He missed a deep three. He was hit on a three with no call and missed. Second Half: He attacked, bumped his man and missed the layup. He missed an open three in transition. Lonzo hit him for a dunk after battling for an offensive board and finding him open. He was fouled in transition, getting hit in the eye, he made both FTs. He blew past Gobert for a layup. He grabbed an offensive board, missed a reverse but KCP tipped it in. He missed a three. He was knocked down in transition with no call, bogus. He scooped up a loose ball and hammered over Mitchell.

Ingram -- -- He had 13 points on 5-9 shooting, hitting a three in the first half. Nearly all his points were in the first quarter. I think he scored just 3 the next 3 quarters. He also struggled with his FT shooting tonight. I thought it had looked much improved the past few games after he spent some time working on it, but trouble from the line tonight. Gobert really made things tough for him. Consider if we had Lopez out there to space the floor and pull Gobert from the paint. Ingram would have been much more successful with that. Gobert just sat in the paint, didn’t care what the Laker bigs were doing and waited for guys like Ingram to come right to him. Easy to load up on Ingram tonight. “Utah’s defense is great if you don’t move the ball,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked, hung and couldn’t finish a tough one, looked hit in the face (should have been to the line). He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He attacked under control and hit the short turnaround in the paint. He sank an open corner three in transition. He up-faked at the FT line and drew contact from Gobert for FTs, he missed both. Up and under to lose his man and then stretched in a layup around the help. He lost his man and threw down a two-handed jam. He sank a turnaround from the top of the key with the clock low. He couldn’t finish a layup around Gobert. He attacked, took contact with no call and threw a pass away. He pushed it out and passed it right to a Jazz player. He was stripped on a drive. Too deep and he couldn’t finish over Gobert. He was fouled in transition, he made one. Second Half: He dunked curling off the handoff to take a bounce pass. He missed a pull-up at the top of the key at the end of the quarter.

McGee -- -- They didn’t play well with McGee on the court. Defensively, he stayed glued to Gobert, not wanting to give up lobs. This resulted in pretty soft rim protection. Mitchell ended up posterizing him on a dunk. Offensively, he tried to iso a few times. And he even missed a three on a pick and pop. It was just never pretty. I much preferred any of our other bigs or even the small ball with Beasley out there. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He was stripped in the paint. He traveled under the hoop. He attacked and tried to scoop a layup around Gobert. He took the interior feed and scored over Gobert. He missed an open three on the pick and pop. He missed a jumphook. He iso’d and hit a short one over Gobert. Second Half: He faked a handoff and hit Ingram with the bounce pass for a dunk. He missed a jumphook on iso, looked fouled with no call.

Hart -- -- Josh ended up with five fouls in third quarter himself, eventually fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Not a good shooting game. I really liked the team rebounding by the team, though, tonight. Seven Lakers had 5 or more rebounds. Four other players had at least 3 rebounds. Just a good job battling. Unfortunately, we could turn those defensive boards into consistent fast break opportunities. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-6 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 6 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a-22. The Action: He hit a floater working off the high screen in early offense. He missed a wing three. He pushed it up court and hit Ingram for a corner three. He swished a three off the handoff from Chandler. He missed an open sideline three. His lob pass was knocked away. He attacked in transition and drew FTs. Second Half: Wild pass around Gobert instead of trying to finish, turnover. He missed a tip in trailing the break, but kept it alive for Lonzo to tip it in. He missed a three straight away.

Chandler -- -- Thought he was better than McGee tonight. Just a hand full of minutes and he didn’t play the second half. He got his only score on a tip in. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Nice handoff screen to Hart for a three. He fouled Korver on a three. He tipped in the dribble penetration miss. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He swished a very tough corner three to just beat the shotclock on his first attempt, but that’s wasn’t a sign of things to come. He missed his threes the rest of the way. He did a good job on the offensive glass. With our guards crashing the glass at times, they were able to manufacture a number of second-chance points. Credit the Jazz defense for some of the fumbles KCP had catching passes on the curl or in the paint. They were definitely looking where Gobert was at times and weren’t clean handling the ball as a result. He had a couple garbage time scores to pad the stats. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-13 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He sank a tough catch-and-shoot corner three, just beating the shotclock. He fumbled a ball on a drive and then had a shotclock violation airballing a prayer. He double dribbled working off a screen. He sank a pullup from 16-feet out as he came off a screen. He jumped a passing lane to swipe a bounce pass. Wild leaning three trying to draw a foul, not close. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. Second Half: He bricked an open three in transition. He fumbled a pass out of bounds on a curl off a screen. He missed a three in transition, but Kuzma got a board, missed and KCP tipped it in. He missed a drive. He clearly drew a charge at midcourt, but the refs called him for a block and KCP slapped his chest where the shoulder hit him. He missed a pull-up from midrange. He scored a layup off a bounce pass. He attacked and took contact for FTs, he made one. He hit Zubac for a dunk. He attacked and scored a layup.

Beasley -- -- Scoreless in the first half, but aggressive in the second half as we went small and he scored 17 points. I believe he was 6-13 in the second half. Very aggressive, scoring nearly a point a minute. He then reached on help D and hurt something, going right to the locker room with 4:27 left. The Lakers were just starting to get used to playing with him and developing his role on this team. Hopefully, it’s not a setback. He needs these games to continue to work on his wind and for teammates to learn how to play with him. Loved the effort he put in during those small ball minutes. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-15 shooting (0-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed an elbow pull-up. He changed direction but couldn’t finish the layup. Second Half: He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked Gobert from the corner and scored a layup. He airballed a corner three, seemed like he never got a hold of the pass. He challenged and leaked out for Lonzo to outlet to him for a dunk. He iso’d and sank the step-back 12-footer. Quick attack off the three line from the wing and he drew FTs, he made both. He fouled a three shooter, thankfully only made one FT. Way off on a wing three. He took his eyes off a pass and fumbled it away. He couldn’t handle another pass. He attacked, spun and missed the short one over Gobert. He sank a short jumper off the drive and dish from Zo. He swatted Korver’s three out of bounds. Great anticipation on an inbounds read to swipe the ball, he pushed it down court at full speed and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He missed an open wing three. He attacked and missed, got it back and scored the And-1, he made the FT. He missed a pull-up.

Stephenson -- -- Fairly quiet game from him. He had a couple of nice passes to Zubac to set up scores in the first half. Wish we had more of that. He also hit a three later in the game. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He shielded his man off the dribble and found Zubac over the top for a layup. He setup Zubac again for a score on the two-man sequence. Second Half: He attacked off the high screen and scored a layup. He sank a much-needed corner three. He missed a sideline three after taking a dribble.

Zubac -- -- No love from the refs for Zubac tonight. It seemed like the whistles went against him or he had no call on several occasions. He was upset but played through it. Still, he somehow scored 10 to go with 5 boards in just 14 minutes. At times he rushed some shots with Gobert out there, but I also thought we gave him the ball too early on other occasions and that left him a little outside his range and resulted in longer jumphooks or runners. Love how strong he’s looked lately. He powered a two-hand finish right through Gobert in the first half. That’s a strong kid right there. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He scored a layup off the interior feed from Lonzo. He missed a jumphook. He blocked a layup. He scored a layup working the two-man game with Lance. He muscled in a two-handed scored over Gobert on the screen-roll. He couldn’t finish a score at the front of the rim and was annoyed at another no call. Second Half: Called for a foul because Gobert went over his back, weird. Not close on a floater (Lonzo gave it to him too soon). He rejected a drive and was called for a foul. He rushed a jumphook in transition. He hit KCP for a layup. He drew FTs on the nice drive and dish from Moe. He dunked when KCP found him in semi-transition.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He missed a three on his only attempt and got caught in the air in transition trying to pass under the hoop for a turnover. Not much else of impact. The Stats: He scored didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 0 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 7 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He got cuaght in the air in transition and threw it away. He missed a corner three in transition. He hit Lance for a corner three.

Wagner -- -- Good minutes from Moe. He looked really, really mobile with the ball in his hands. He was stringing together multiple moves to get into the heart of the D. Up-fakes into changes of directions with the handle and/or on spins. Really impressive to see from someone his size. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. Second Half: He missed a three straight away. He faked, went behind his back, spun and hit the floater. He attacked, spun, drew the D and fed Zu for FTs. He up-faked, went behind his back one way, then spun the other and banked in the one-hander, nice.

Walton -- -- With as short-handed as we are our playmaker positions, we can afford foul trouble for Zo. Tough to survive that. A couple stretches when Zo was out, we got killed… Quick timeout down 8-3… They trailed 19-12 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. He brought in Chandler for McGee… KCP in for Lonzo with 4 minutes left, Lakers down 8… They tied it up a minute and a half later… The Lakers trailed 32-26 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Beasley, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo lineup… Lonzo picked up his third with 9:41 left and Luke left him in… Lakers down 38-32 when a timeout came. Ingram in for Lonzo out of that with 8 minutes left… They fell back by 12 and Luke called a timeout… Out of that, he went with McGee, Beasley, Kuzma, Hart, Ingram… Wagner in for Beasley… Moe out for KCP with 2:47 down 15… Lakers getting shelled and the Jazz crowd was going nuts. Luke finally took a timeout down 20… No field goals by the Lakers for 6 minutes… The Lakers trailed 62-41 at the half. The Lakers shot 16-49 and just 3-13 from three. The Jazz made 8 of 19 from three… Timeout Jazz after we scored a bucket, Lakers down 21, lol… McGee sat for Zubac out of that… KCP in for Zubac as we went really small… Hart picked up his fourth and fifth fouls, flagrant on a box out, lol… Beasley in… Lonzo picked up his fourth midway through the third… The pace picked up into the Lakers favor. Lonzo doing a good job imposing himself this quarter despite the foul trouble… They cut it to 12 and forced a timeout. Good job on the offensive glass by the Lakers… Lonzo finally picked up his fifth foul with 2 minutes left in the third and had to sit down 11. Here come the refs… A series of calls went against the Lakers and they trailed 83-68 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Svi lineup… They were down 17 when Lonzo returned with 9 minutes left in the fourth… Lakers got a little bit of momentum back. Timeout… Hart fouled out a few seconds later with 6 minutes left… Beasley injured and out for Moe… Garbage time minutes…

Thanks DB - always appreciate the write-ups!

As for the game - ugh. After looking like the Lakers minus Lebron were starting to get competitive, this game was a letdown.

I love teams with a reputation of being good on defense playing at home - the calls usually never come.

Alright so I'm not a fan of Luke's rotation but one thing I hate more out of a coach is when we are getting NO CALLS and the coach just sits on his ass. Stand up, fight for you team, throw a fit and get a technical, shoot get your ass ejected. #1 it might wake the refs up and #2 your team will play harder for you. There was a 3 min stretch where Lakers got zero calls. I think kuzma went for layup and Ingles was kinda moving but kuzma got called for charge. Then next play kcp tried to D up and it looked like Ingles lowered his shoulder and pushed off with his arm and kcp got called for blocking. Huge momentum killer and Luke just on his ass. Get us a players coach please.
