If I recall correctly, Stu helped run Pete Newell's big man camp back in the day. I doubt he'd help much in terms of game planning against other teams which is what the assistants are responsible for. He'd be great for the big men I guess but I don't think he can relate to his peers or the players. Just not a good fit.

Stu's 'glass half empty' act is him constantly trying to be Chick Hearn. But Chick wasn't a glass half empty announcer, he just called it like he saw it on the court, and didn't intentionally try to put a negative spin on it. When the Lakers were doing something right, he called it out, when they were doing something wrong or stupid, he called it out.

Stu intentionally tries to put a negative spin on it in a "I'm trying to prove I'm not a homer.." kind of way, and it just comes off as him intentionally being glass half empty.
you do realize he's not trying to be chick. he's beiing stu. he's always been this way. nothing has changed except for..... The personnel on the lakers roster.

stu has only been thru the bad lakers with nick the quick and crew who were grown men and not actually that bad. That kobe and kwame laker team at least had super man on the team. This team just finally got themselves a super hero in bron. Imagine the kind of commentary you would have after watching decades of winning basketball full of hall of famers and top 50 players? Think about that for a moment. you would barely know how to even judge these kids because. Your nose is darn near in the air like a wealthy elite. lol. he can't help it. he's a laker and a laker announcer when we were winning like crazy. only recently he's starting to lighten up on the kids a bit. But also not be a super homer and admit what he says. But what he does complain about are Fundamentals. Because once you get to this level YOU SHOULD HAVE THESE FUNDAMENTALS. the problem is, these youngins DO not have them. These youngins is generally speaking about almost all young players in the nba. But him harping on said fundies means if he was a coach our team would be more fundamentally sound. that would make our kids much better today and especially as they get older. less flat angle passes and more lowered dribbles would save the team a few TO's per game. that alone = a few more wins. lets not talk about free throw shooting.

If we should hire any color commentator who's up there in age as some kind of assistant coach, how about Hubie Brown? He wouldn't want to do it either, but he's tough yet really upbeat and likable.

If it means Stu retires from being a Lakers broadcaster, I'm down.

He was an NBA player and has been part of a historic NBA franchise for over 4 decades. I bet he is more qualified than everyone in this thread.

Stu is good BUT I've heard it all before...he puts nothing into his craft...sounds like he never watches basketball...

for me the Spectrum deal breaker is BillyMac...sounds like he's having an orgasm on every basket...settle down friskey...I'm sure his dog humps legs

Wouldn't making Stu a coach be the next step in tanking?

No. But not because he is negative, or any of the other nonsense that's been said. Just because he would have zero interest, and is too old. If Stu had any interest in coaching beyond operating camps the he would have done it when he was much much younger. He could have gotten into coaching 30 years ago if that's what he had an interest in.

If you were the Laker's TV color commentator why would you willingly give that gig up?!?

Stu would be awful.

He hates 3 pointers.

He hates modern basketball.

He doesn't study the game.

He doesn't know the players.

He doesn't know the common offensive and defensive schemes.

If he has some great grandkids, he'd be great for coaching their youth league games. The Lakers need better.

I kind of just want to see Stu fired. He's such a minor part of the Lakers franchise but has a God Complex anyway. It's annoying.

lol I freakin love Stuart. He’s the only voice left from my favorite era. I have a few cassette recordings when I was around 13 calling into the old post game shows. I remember me rambling and giving him and Chick a bunch compliments and then finishing it with, “you guys bring aaaaction to the game”, Stu then pauses and asks me “Ali, Do I owe you money??” And like a nervous innocent kid I responded with “oh no, you don’t owe me money.”
