Two Lebronless Teams… The Cavs had lost 12 in a row heading into this one, now experiencing life without LeBron. The Lakers, of course, have been dealing with a taste of that with LeBron’s injury. So who could be less inept tonight?

The Lakers fell behind 28-13 at one point in the first quarter. Once again, getting off to a slow start and giving the Cavs hope for a taste of victory.

After cutting the lead to 1 to start the second half, the Lakers gave up a 10-0 run and were quickly back in the hole. To start the fourth, they got in the bonus early as the Cavs fouled again and again. Unfortunately, that’s often a valid defensive tactic against the Lakers. Instead of going on a run, the Lakers missed 6 of their first 8 attempts in just over 2 minutes into the quarter. They’d clank away from the line the rest of the quarter.

The Cavs gave the Lakers enough opportunity in the fourth to come back and win this. Even with Cleveland missing multiple freethrows themselves down the stretch, the Lakers couldn’t close. The Lakers cut it to 3 off a Kuzma three. (He was battling hard all fourth to get the team back in the game. Even when we weren’t running plays for him, he was still making them.)

The lead was just too big to lose to the sad play of the Lakers tonight. The Lakers were 8-17 from the freethrow line in the fourth quarter.

They fell 101-95 at home to Cleveland. Embarrassing loss even without LeBron/Rondo.

Ball -- -- He blew past a man early in this game and then missed the uncontested dunk. You always wonder how this is going to affect him for the rest of the night. As evidenced by his freethrow issues, he’s been a bit mentally fragile. He bounced back by staying aggressive, attacking the rim and he finished with 7 points in the first quarter (should have been 9, though). He finished with 11 points on 4-8 shooting with 5 assists and 4 boards. But he’d fade a bit in the second half, scoring on his first attempt but then not again the rest of the night. He was battling in this game and carrying the team for a while, but then just faded into the night. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-14 shooting (2-8 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 8 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He threw a pass away in transition. He knocked a lob away. He missed a pull-up three trailing the break. He blew past his man and missed the uncontested dunk. He blew past his man and made an easy layup (always scary going to his right). He attacked left next time down and scored a layup. He missed a lefty jumphook in the post. He sank a rushed corner three to beat the shotclock. Speedy pushout and he drew FTs, he made one. He forced his man into a travel on a drive. He swished a catch-and-shoot sideline three off a wing pass. He smothered his man and forced a turnover under the hoop. He fed Hart on the break for a layup. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board, went up and finished with his left. He missed a step-back corner three. He missed a wing three on a step-back, looked like he didn’t get that cleanly. He stole a ball at mid court. Offensive board and he found Hart cutting for a score. He attacked off the three line and hit Zubac for the And-1 layup. Short on a wing three on a low kickout. He missed a tough one-hander in a crowd after picking up the dribble. He gave up baseline and a layup. He missed a three.

Kuzma -- -- Slow start, going 0-4 from three in the first half. He’d finish 4-10 for 9 points. Some forces at times and poor decisions, but also some good things early one. He had some strong plays on the pass or hitting the floater when he’s running the two-man game with a big. Love to see more of that. We might have scored on every one of those he had tonight. In the fourth, he tried to will the team back into this game and nearly did. He was getting scores in transition, getting to the line, hitting fades and then the threes began to fall. Surprisingly, we didn’t call his number out of timeouts despite his hot shooting. We went to KCP several times. Still, somehow we’d get the miss and the ball would find its way to him and he’d make something happen. I really didn’t like the early sub out of Kuzma in the third quarter unless we were bringing him back later in the quarter. We didn’t. instead we went to Lance at PF and treaded water, running clock without getting back into the game. Just a waste. Maybe it motivated Kuzma in the fourth, but we simply can’t afford to lose this game. Very bad loss. Kuzma left points at the line, as well, tonight. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-23 shooting (2-7 from three, 5-9 from the line) to go with 9 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a face-up wing jumper on iso. Swing pass to Hart for three. He missed a three, barely getting if off on time. He tried to force it between two defenders in transition and turned it over. He attacked to his left off the three line and scored with his left. He charged in transition. He attacked off the three line and hit the twisting short jumper. Up fake at the three line and he blew past his man for a layup. He attacked down the middle of either a zone or miscommunication and threw down a dunk. He attacked, spun and missed a layup at the front of the rim. He missed a three in transition. He found Hart open under the hoop for a score. Shovel pass to Zubac for the dunk off the two-man game. He missed a three on a kickout. He was hammered while filling a lane on the break, he made one FT. He missed a good look at a three. Second Half: He sank a floater working off the high screen. He missed a wing three. Too hard on a layup attempt over his head. He threw down in transition after pushing out a rebound (got away with an extra step). Good help going vertical and denying a drive, he then attacked on the other end and earned more FTs, he made one. He missed a layup on the break, but Beasley cleaned it up. He attacked and was called for a charge. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made one. He sank a tough, Dirk-like fade from the elbow on iso. He probed off the McGee screen and hit the floater. He was called for a travel in transition, trying to jumpstep like he did earlier. Way short on a face-up wing jumper on iso. He attacked and missed a layup. He was fouled on a three, he made two of the FTs. He sank a three next time down. He swished a tough wing three after he tapped out an offensive board and we got it to him. He grabbed a loose ball and scored off glass.

Ingram -- -- Strong 11-point first quarter. He was getting to the rim with relative ease and hit a couple shorter pull-ups in the paint. He’d go scoreless in the next quarter. He find some moments in the second half in transition. He’s pretty deadly when he’s got speed in the offensive zone and some space to work. He had an excellent throwdown with both hands over Thompson challenging him in this one. Some nice work on the defensive glass at times. When he wants a board, it seems like he usually gets it. I think he missed his three FTs in the fourth quarter. Those kind of sucked some of the life from the team and fans, unfortunately. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (1-2 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He took contact in transition, lost the defender and scored off another long stride. He pulled up his dribble in the paint, then hit the short jumper after surveying the floor. He backed a smaller man down, then missed a layup. He attacked and missed a leaning bank. He took a pass, curled into the paint off a dribble and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. Speed into the offensive zone and he drew FTs, he made both. He took some contact and chucked it up at the rim with no call and went in at the end of the quarter. Travel in transition for a turnover. He got caught in the air on a drive and threw it away. He missed a pull-up jumper. Second Half: He missed a tough one in the paint. He snaked a screen and missed the pull-up FT jumper. He sank a corner three off a swing pass. Way short on a wing three, Svi tracked it down and found Brandon cutting who then jammed with both hands over Thompson. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, then missed both. He posted up and hit Stephenson diving for FTs. He changed directions between his legs, took contact and banked in the And-1, he missed the FT. He skied for a rebound, pushed it up and flipped in a layup around a defender. He drew FTs in the post, he made both.

McGee -- -- He was a -14 in the first half. I haven’t been real thrilled with his defensive play of late. Offensively, without LeBron and Rondo that will slow him down. But he’s not been as much of a deterrent in the paint lately. Either his energy isn’t there or his timing is off. He finished with the team-low -18. Rather start someone else at this point, but we’ll see. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 8 boards, 1 block and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He sank a turnaround jumper on our first possession, not what we drew up. He goaltended a drive. Second Half: He missed a throwdown attempt. Awkward baseline one hander and he missed.

Hart -- -- Luke said he’s going to make a change to the starting lineup. I’d like to try not starting McGee, but I think maybe Luke is thinking of just mixing up KCP and Hart. Who knows? Hart tonight was stone cold. Our shooting guards, couldn’t shoot. He was 1-8 from three and finished 3-12 on the night. Some nice hustle plays out there, but this is a shot making league. Got to knock them down. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-12 shooting (1-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a three taking a dribble off the handoff. He was called for an elbow off the dribble. He sank a wing three off a swing pass. He blocked a shot in transition. He forced his man into an airball. He missed a corner three on the other end. He airballed a baseline floater. He missed a wing three. He cut under the hoop, stopped after taking the pass and got run into for FTs, he made both. Great job rejecting a drive with his left while shuffling left. He reversed in transition off the feed from Lonzo. Second Half: He helped knock away a post entry pass to ignite a break. Swing pass to Ingram for the three. He backed it out and missed a three. He missed a pull-up from the left side. Way short on a three, but Lonzo got the board and hit him cutting for a score. He missed a corner three in transition. He drew a charge on Thompson in the post, getting hit in the face with elbow. He missed an open three on a kickout. He kept an offensive board alive and Kuzma scored.

Chandler -- -- A brief stint in the first half and that was all we saw from him until a few seconds left in the game. Not sure if it was his back or just Luke thinking McGee or small ball were better options the rest of the way. I tend to think it was a Luke decision because he did bring Chandler back with 16 seconds left. So 4 minutes and somehow he was a +12. Guys could use his screen setting and hustle. Curious. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 2 boards in 4 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He brought him in with 16 seconds left.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- So this is what really irked me about Luke tonight. We set up three threes for KCP out of a timeout tonight. He was 0-6. When he’s 0-4, why are we setting up a play for him? 0-5 and you got back to it? What are you doing? This was when Kuzma was feeling it, too. Not a good game for KCP tonight as his shot wasn’t dropping. KCP took a knee to his ribs while challenging in transition earlier in the game. Maybe that impacted him some, but he can be a little streaky. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-9 shooting (0-6 from three) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: He reversed directions off a screen and hit a pull-up from midrange. Second Half: He missed a three in transition. He missed a corner three. He stopped on a dime and hit the pull-up jumper in early offense. He missed a runner. Pocket pass to Beasley for FTs on the layup attempt. He missed a three out of a timeout. He missed a pull-up three in transition that could have cut it to 2. He missed a three out of a timeout. He missed yet another three set up for him out of a timeout.

Beasley -- -- Seemed like he started to get a little warmed up as the game went along. I’m still irritated we went with Lance at PF for a stretch instead of Beasley. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a short one in the paint, pumping a bit on the finish. He attacked off the three line and missed a scoop. He crossed over and hit a runner after getting into the chest of the big. Second Half: He drew FTs on the pocket pass from KCP, he made one. He missed a righty scoop he should have had. He attacked right and this time scooped with his left for the And-1, he made the FT. He cleaned up a missed Kuzma layup on the break. He attacked and was blocked out of bounds.

Stephenson -- -- I wasn’t sure if he’d be back in the rotation in the second half. I just didn’t see anything from him in the first half. Yet, Luke ran him at PF in a small ball unit late in the third. Not sure why he didn’t bring back in Kuzma or Beasley instead. Lance was 0-4 and didn’t score, even missed his two FT attempts. Kills me. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a corner three (had Beasley open under the hoop). Good job holding position in the post against a big and it forced a shotclock violation. He threw a pass away. He picked up a tech shoving a man while trying to get the ball for an inbounds. He attacked, hung, missed, got it back and threw it away. Second Half: He missed an iso pull-up jumper. He attacked threw traffic and choked a layup. He cut and Ingram found him from the post for FTs, he missed both.

Zubac -- -- Some good challenges throughout the game. He had to be careful not to leave his feet when Thompson was pumpfaking in the paint. But he was fairly disruptive in the first half. I thought that might have helped earn him more minutes but Luke kept them low tonight. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 blocks and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He dunked off the shovel pass with Kuzma running the two-man game. He might have blocked a jumper, but forced an airball anyway and a shot clock violation. He missed a jumphook. He blocked another one in the paint to ignite a break. Second Half: And-1 layup off a great passing sequence from the team, he made the FT.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Luke was desperate to get some three shooting on the floor and maybe some spark, so he went to Svi late in the third quarter. He sank a three and missed another set up for him. Looked like he rushed that second one even though it was a good look. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting from three to go with 1 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swished an open corner three on a kickout from Ingram. He tracked down an offensive board and hit Ingram cutting for a dunk. Way short on a catch-and-shoot three designed for him out of a timeout.

Walton -- -- Lakers with their usual uninspiring start to a game. They trailed 28-13 when Luke took another timeout and shook his head. This team needs to rethink everything they do to start a game. They are predictably horrible and it doesn’t matter how poor the competition is or whether the Lakers are healthy or not… Don’t know why he kept the same lineup out there as long as he did, either… He brought in Chandler and KCP for Kuzma and McGee… Down 10 when Lance came in for Lonzo… They trailed 32-24 heading into the second quarter… He started the small Beasley, Kuzma, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo unit… They cut it to 6 to force a timeout… McGee in for Beasley… Ingram in for KCP who took a knee to the ribs… Zubac finally in with 4 minutes left in the half… The Lakers trailed 51-46 at the half…They cut it to 1, then gave up a 10-0 run and Luke called a timeout with 8:27 left… Just rather run Zubac than McGee right now (who’s a -20 at this point)… He brought in KCP. Good to see him available and sat Kuzma… Zubac in for McGee, Lakers down 8… Svi in for Hart, down 10 with 5 minutes left… Lance in for Ingram, Lakers down 8. Would have rather brought back Kuzma or Beasley here at the PF, but let’s see how this does. Still, Lance at PF… Lakers 5-21 from three right now… The Lakers trailed 75-65 heading into the fourth quarter… He started a Zubac, Kuzma, Ingram, Stephenson, KCP lineup. Then sat Zubac for Beasley after one offensive stand… The Lakers missed their first 6 of 8 from the line to start the fourth… Timeout down 8 after 3 minutes. Hit 5 more of those and this is anyone’s game at this point… Not sure why we are in love with Lance so much this game. Luke finally sat him for Hart after 4 minutes into the fourth. Lakers still down 10… He went with McGee, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, KCP with 7:39 left… Down 5 when Lonzo came in for KCP… Timeout down 11 a couple minutes later... Several threes set up for KCP out of timeout. He was 0-6 tonight from three. Why are you setting those up for him if he’s cold?... The Lakers were 7-34 from three, 16-27 from the line…

I'm just really disappointed. Huge fans of Ingram and Zo, and Svi, and Mo. I think they have all the talent in the world, but they're young and haven't really taken that next step.

Kuz and Hart talk a big game but similarly hasn't taken that next step.

And the longer they play like this, the more it looks like this team is going to be ripped apart, and that's sad I like this iteration of the Lakers

I am not really surprised with this at all. Young team with young coach is recipe for disaster waiting to happen.

Hear, hear. Thank you, DB. Your combination of fact based reporting and a willingness to name names takes care of a lot of venting for me on nights like tonight... a bit like a print version of what Chick used to provide for me... I'm not sure how you do it -- especially over the last half decade -- but just know it's certainly appreciated.

Definitely the low point of this season... thus far.

DB - you are a steady and consistent leader

OMG - who is the steady and consistent leader on the court - Zo or BI?

Thanks for these writeups. I always love the emoticons as it’s so accurate.

Sucks to go from close to 3rd down to 8th in quick fashion. The way we’re losing is what bothers me.

Thanks DB

Gotta say that we suck.

Where is the ball movement? The pace? Better start playing Zu an KCP more at least they can hit the FT.

Great read. Living on the east coast, many a times the Lakers come on too late at night (when you work the next morning). I look forward to reading these synopsis as I find them level, clear, and comprehensive.

12-game losing streak.

The Knicks were on a 7-game losing streak when they beat us at home.

Rotation patterns are dumbfounding....and this team needs scoring, so:

Hart has been stone cold with Lebron out ---> bench
McGee ineffective the last few games --->bench

Beasley is a scorer, and he's showing---> more minutes, please
Zu also can score, and right now is playing better than McGee --->more minutes too

Please, no more small ball with Hart and Stephenson

Please, try BI at SG, KUZ at SF and Beasley at 4, and you'll get more rebounds and scoring....

For me this is one of those signs that we have good, young, inconsistent players....none of whom is an immediate breakout sure fire star....consequently it shouldn't surprise anyone if every single one of our young players comes up in trade discussions, they all have some value, but none of them are guys you would say there is no way I am trading them kind of guys

Ingram at 2 is Key

Top 3 Defense with Ingram at 2

He smothers other teams 2’s

McCollum
Klay
Etc

I would even bench Lonzo for KCP at the 1

Very short leash wilts Lonzo

You give up a 5 point lead or start bricks

Pull him

Put KCP at 1

Just when you think the youngsters are turning it around they disappoint every time.

I guess this answers the question who has the better supporting cast around LaBron. Horrific loss.

Unfortunately, 3,500 of them from me tonight for this one.

Appreciate it when you guys read these on night like this.

Thanks for the hard work. Even on horrible nights like this, reading your breakdown of the game is a bright spot.

Agree with this whole post thread. I have no words. None. But your words, DB, are greatly appreciated.
