Changes to the Starting Lineup… The Lakers could not afford to lose another home game to a struggling team.

Out from the starting lineup was a struggling Josh Hart and JaVale McGee. Neither player has been bringing the two-way ball that they had been earlier in the season.

The defense came out strong to start the game. There were no quick double-digit deficits as the Lakers struggle to get on track. They locked down early.

“I loved our defensive intensity to start,” Luke said.

In the third quarter, an aggressive Lonzo Ball sparked the team to a lead after hitting a couple of threes. Into the fourth quarter, a 14-0 Laker run secured the win.

Even with some poor Laker play in the final two minutes, the Bulls couldn’t dig their way out of the hole. The Lakers won 107-100.

Ball -- -- Loved the aggression. “What’s been great is watching him just get to the rim and continue to feel more confident and comfortable doing it,” Luke said. He mentioned Lonzo’s still getting a sense that he can use his body, absorb contact and score. “Slowly, he’s getting better and better with his touch,” Luke said. He added that Lonzo and Rondo have been spending extra time after practice working on it. Lonzo specifically mentioned it’s helped him finish off the pick and rolls. Yes, please. He even made one of those short banks and a bit of a floater tonight. He’s like a combined 2 of 25 (an estimate, but I bet it’s close) on those two types of shots. He also had another dunk after a burst of speed down the lane. I want to say he’s learning. I want to believe he is. Keep showing it to me, Lonzo. If there’s one thing to get out of this time with no Rondo and LeBron, I hope it’s this aggression. In the third quarter, he had a one-man run with a couple of threes and other makes to push the Lakers in front of the bulls. Defensively, he’s just a pest. Guys can’t shake him, and on help D he anticipates and rotates well. Even on switches, tonight he forced a big into a challenged fading jumper and brick. He also pressures full court to slow run shotclock down. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-17 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 6 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: Offensive board led to a Kuzma dunk. Burst of speed coming off a screen and he threw down. He missed a deep three, got it back and missed the corner three. His kickout was swiped. He missed a tough three trying to beat the shotclock. He got an offensive board and hit Kuzma while still in the air for a layup. He got a switch, pulled his man out, attacked and fed Chandler for FTs. He crossed over, attacked left and banked in the runner (good touch for once on those banks). He attacked through a crowd in transition and scored a layup, way to be aggressive against three defenders! Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a bank after his man went under the screens and he attacked. Good challenge to force a brick. He swiped a ball on help D as Chandler blitzed a screen and Lonzo covered on rotation behind him. He sank a three with the D sagging off him. He sank a wing three on his next touch in transition. He forced a brick on iso D, forcing a big to a fade. He bullied his man in the paint, missed the short one, bounced up quickly with his man falling back and easily scored the putback. He drained a wing three right in his defender’s face. He attacked off the screen and lobbed to McGee for the score. He made a half-floater, half-jumper in the paint with time and space. He got tapped on a tough layup at high speed in transition. He attacked and couldn’t muscle in a score. He was picked for a dunk.

Kuzma -- -- He had 6 points on 3-10 shooting, but 7 boards in the first half. He never really got on track offensively in this game, but that effort on the glass was noticeable all game. He was in there battling and yanking boards away from Bulls. That allowed up to finish with the 16-12 double-double. The 5 turnovers, however, ugly. It wasn’t just one thing but maybe mental mistakes (a couple bad passes that were bad ideas and execution, losing the handle, charges, etc.) Got to clean up that decision-making. The three ball was off tonight. His only make was a step-back three. Not if that had anything to do with it, but sometimes he looks smoother on those than anything else. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-15 shooting (1-6 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 2 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He up-faked, attacked and threw down a dunk. Bad pass trying to thread it to a cutter, turnover. He missed a short one. He missed a reverse in transition (should have gotten under control). He was called for a carry on iso. He missed a pull-up three on iso. He iso’d in the post and missed the turnaround. He attacked and hit Zubac for a score. He scored a layup cutting under the hoop when Lonzo got an offensive board and hit him. He missed a three, we got it back to him and he missed again. He went behind his back right out of bounds with a pass. He curled into the paint and hit the running hook. He missed an open three. Second Half: He attacked and hit a runner. He charged in transition. He didn’t try to finish on the break and blew an advantage with a pass out. Interior feed on the same possession to get Chandler a layup. He swished a step-back three straight away. Quick attack on the catch and he banked in the runner. He missed an open three on the pick and pop. He kept an offensive board alive. He pushed up the break and was stripped, three the other way. He posted up and drew FTs, he made both. He lost a dribble. Good job battling for a defensive board and he was fouled with 26 seconds left, he made one FT.

Ingram -- -- “I see a lot of guys open that I didn’t see earlier in the season,” Brandon said after leading the team with 7 assists tonight. He had a couple more feeds that probably should have been assists (McGee blowing a lob comes to mind). Very well-rounded game tonight. As Brandon matures, this is the kind of game I think we’ll see with more consistency. He had 8 points, 5 boards and 3 assists in the half and kept that same pace in the second half to have one of those near triple-double types of lines that we saw frequently from Lamar Odom when he was on his game. I don’t know if there were any dagger makes tonight, but BI had a couple of jumpers in the fourth that killed the Bulls. This was after a drive that set him up for FTs. So the D tried to adjust and BI took what they gave him and calmly knocked those down. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-13 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a three off a swing pass. He probed, spun and finger rolled in a layup. He attacked right, drew help D, hung and hit a tough one from a few feet away. He hit McGee on the roll for a dunk. He found KCP under the hoop for a score. He iso’d, attacked left and missed a tough, off-balance runner at the end of the quarter. He missed a wing three. He hit KCP on the skip pass for an open three. He attacked a crowd and couldn’t finish. He attacked in transition and banked in the runner in a crowd. He iso’d, spun, stretched out above the D and flipped in the layup. He rejected a screen at the end of the half and fumbled the ball away before he could get a shot off (so 0-2 at the end of quarters). Second Half: Telegraphed bounce pass to start the half, turnover. Got away with an illegal D to swipe a bounce pass on help D and push up the break. He missed a pull-up at the FT line when a lob wasn’t there. He missed a turnaround in the middle of the paint. McGee scored (eventually) off a lob pass from BI after missing the first attempt. He drew a foul off a hesitation move and drive in transition (should have finished the layup), he made one FT. He iso’d and hit a short fade going to his left. He pounded the dribble, attacked and drew FTs at the front of the rim, he made one. He iso’d, his man gave him space this time so he hit the jumper over him. He iso’d and sank a step-back 18-footer. He was picked in the backcourt not paying attention, then fouled.

Chandler -- -- With Chandler in the starting lineup, we managed to not let a team get off to a strong first quarter against us. He was both plugging the paint or blitzing screens and doubling aggressively on the perimeter. He just made the defense much smarter. That helped the Lakers to force several shotclock violations on the night. Glad we made this move. McGee was driving me a bit crazy late with how ineffective he’s been on D. Tyson was a team-high +19. He said he wanted to focus on settling the young kids down. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-3 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: Putback jam after a shot rolled out. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Lonzo, he made both. He tapped out an offensive board. He swatted a drive. He tapped out an offensive board. Second Half: He scored a layup off the interior feed from Kuzma. Nice challenge to force a miss at the end of the shotclock. He drew FTs off a bounce pass in the paint, he missed both. He threw down the lob pass from Svi.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some credit in this one for some focused defense. Luke mentioned his work on LaVine (4-11 for 10 points and 3 turnovers), who was never a threat and only had one FT make tonight. When LeBron comes back, KCP will go back to the bench, but with how badly Hart has struggled, this move had to be made. KCP had 9 points on 3-8 shooting to lead the Lakers at the half. He’d finish with 17 and a +14. The three ball wasn’t dropping but he got into some midrange as well as to the rim. And then late in the game, the intentional fouls came for some freebies. We take it for granted, but you need a guy like that on the floor to close the game in those situations. The Stats: He scored He scored 17 points on 4-11 shooting (1-6 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: Way off on a three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He made a tech. He lost a ball off his foot. Good anticipation and he drew a charge. He gathered a bounce pass and scored the And-1 layup under the hoop. He attacked the paint, took contact and hit the short one at the front of the rim. He missed a corner three. He swished a wide open wing three. He missed a wing three, got it back and missed again. Second Half: He sank a pull-up jumper off a high screen. He swiped a handoff, then clanked a midrange jumper on the other end. He was fouled in transition for FTs, he made both. He missed a wide open wing three. Intentionally fouled with 42 seconds left and he made one FT. Intentionally fouled with 34 seconds left, he made both FTs. Intentionally fouled again, he made one.

Hart -- -- Luke gave some praise to both Hart and McGee for the transition to the bench. Josh, he said, had some very good intensity defensively in the fourth, and JaVale was up supporting teammates while on the bench. Nothing spectacular from Josh tonight. But not as many of those breakdowns on D like we’ve seen from him defensively in this one. He didn’t shoot or force anything. His one score was on a coast-to-coast drive for a score. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Awful perimeter pass right to a Bulls player, turnover, score the other way, timeout. Second Half: He swiped the ball, gave it up, got it back quickly and took it coast to coast for the layup.

McGee -- -- He just hasn’t been the player he was earlier in the season. Really, since his time off, he just hasn’t brought it. He doesn’t have his playmakers out there, so that will hurt offensively. But the D just hasn’t been there. In our slow starts he hasn’t been any kind of presence. So I agree completely with sitting him until he gets back to form. I thought the D tonight was better around the rim (3 blocks), but you can see how much more difficult Chandler is making things. Offensively, the 3-10 is probably more like a 3-8 as he had a couple misses before finishing one shot. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He was blocked under the paint on an inbounds. He dunked on the screen-roll with BI. He blocked a jumper on one end, then drew FTs trying to finish on the other, he made one. He missed a jumphook. Good help challenge on a switch to get a stop. He missed an elbow jumper. He blocked a drive. He kept an offensive board alive with a tap out. Second Half: He finished a lob from Zo rolling to the hoop. Mugged under the hoop with no call. He was fouled after we tapped an offensive board to him, he made both FTs. He missed a lob, a tip, then scored on the third try. He missed an up and under.

Beasley -- -- He missed a lot of chippies and easy ones tonight. Just not quite getting ones he usually makes to drop. Combine a couple of turnovers in the mix and a little bit of a frustrating night for him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He lost the handle on a drive, turnover. Travel on iso. He drew FTs on an interior feed, he missed both. He attacked right and banked with his left. Second Half: He got a mismatch, missed the easy scoop around his man, got it back and was fouled, he made both FTs. He iso’d and lost the ball, points the other way. He choked a point-blank layup on a drive.

Stephenson -- -- He killed the offense in the first half with the iso play. Just no ball movement and things went stagnant. Luke sat him in the second half as a result. Good recognition there not going back to him in the second half. That helped as the Lakers actually won the start of the fourth quarter to control the game. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He sank a pull-up three straight away. He was picked on the perimeter, then fouled. He attacked and lost the dribble out of bounds, turnover. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Zubac -- -- His first half minutes suffered from Stephenson’s poor guard play. No real playmaking for Zubac to set him up, but he still managed to scratch out some points. He hit some clutch FTs late and had a nice challenge, as well. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-2 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He fouled a three shooter. He was fouled trying to power up through a double team for FTs, he made one, we got it back to him in the middle of the paint off his miss and he scored. Second Half: He sank a jumphook on a ball saved to him. Fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made a couple of very flat FTs. Good challenge on a drive to force a miss.

Mykhailiuk -- -- “We think that he can be an elite shooter in this league one day,” Luke said. A couple of big threes early in the fourth the quarter. The stats might not look like much, but those were big makes with the Bulls trying to chip away at the Lakers small lead. He also threw a lob pass off a drive to Chandler. Strong fourth quarter and the bench was on their feet for him. Really love the quick decision-making. When that shot drops, he’s just a problem for teams. At some point, he’ll get more consistent. He’s young, so that’s always the challenge. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 assist and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He sank a sideline three in transition. He got tapped on an open corner three. He drew a charge in transition on the other end. He came off a screen strong to take a pass, elevated well and drilled (that was an aggressive, confident take right there). He got tapped on a three, fading a bit as he launched, but it still looked good. He came off a screen, took a pass, attacked and lobbed to Chandler for the dunk. He missed a step-back jumper.

Walton -- Shuffle of the lineup as he mentioned. Chandler/KCP in, McGee/Hart out. Those are the two spots we mentioned here in the last one. Neither guy just getting it done like they had been earlier in the season… Timeout down 8-7 after 5 points… McGee in for Chandler… Hart in for Kuzma, Lakers up 2… Beasley in up 3 with 3 to go. Lonzo out… The Lakers led 19-18 after the first quarter. Well, you aren’t down 15… He started a Zubac, Beasley, Hart, Stephenson, Svi lineup. So three new players in… Down 3, Luke called a timeout. This unit is being hurt by Stephenson’s ball domination… He brought back in Lonzo and Kuzma for Stephenson and Hart, Kuz playing at the SF… KCP in for Svi down 6… All starters back in…. A 7-0 run to take the lead… Chandler out for McGee with a minute left, Lakers up 1… The Lakers led 43-42 at the half. Both teams were 2-15 from three. The Lakers had 11 turnovers, the Bulls 5… A 12-0 run by the Lakers took an 8-point lead with Lonzo hitting a couple of threes… McGee in for Chandler, Lakers up 4 with 4 minutes left… Lakers up 4 when Hart came in for BI with 3:33… Svi in for KCP up 7… The Lakers led 76-68 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, Beasley, Ingram, Hart, Svi lineup. No Zubac, but also no Stephenson, who killed the offense in the first half… The lead was cut to 4 and Luke called a timeout. Chandler in for McGee… Lonzo in with 8:40 left up 8. Beasley out, so Hart at PF… They stretched the lead out to 18 to force another timeout. A 14-0 Laker run… Zu in for Chandler up 17… Up 10 with 1:14 left, Luke called a timeout to yell at the players for relaxing… He brought Kuz in with a minute left… A couple bad turnovers by the team… He sat Lonzo with 52 seconds left as the Bulls went to the foul game…

Thanks, DB!

Love what Rondo is doing for the team even when injured.

The Lakers still need a shooting coach.

Thanks, DB! Loved hearing about Rondo's impact on Ball. I hope Lonzo milks it as much as he can. There's a lot to learn from Future Coach Rondo.

Thanks DB.

Improvements from Zo and BI during this stretch. They still have a ways to go. Kuz needs to find his offense again.

More Zu he scores and hit his FT as does KCP.

Wakeup call for Hart

Pretty horrible game to watch, especially the 1st half and the last minutes of the 4th quarter. But, a win is a win and I won't nitpick since we're still down two out of best players.

Go Lakers!

That was one of Lonzo's most complete games. First time I can ever recall him driving right into 3 guys absorbing contact and going up for the score and executing it at high speed. If he can bring this into his game regularly combined with his facilitating he will be the player I thought he could be.

Would like to see Mykhailiuk get more 3 point shooting opportunities regularly.
