Tough Break… And down goes another Laker playmaker.

The Lakers led by over 20 points in the first half. They were leaving shooters open and sending extra help to Harden while keeping him off the line. Despite the success, it was really soft defensively. (D’Antoni said the Rockets missed 17 open shots in the first half.) Still, they were working it out.

In the third quarter, the Lakers were reeled in as soon as Lonzo went down. He twisted his ankle on a drive early in the quarter and had to be carried off the court. The Lakers were still up by 15, but this was a devastating turn for the team. No LeBron, no Rondo and now no Lonzo? That’s your three primary playmakers.

Despite some horrible play by Ingram to help the Lakers lose the lead, they battled back. Lance Stephenson took over the offense. He’d hit threes, set up teammates and keep things afloat.

Up 7 with one minute left, Harden hit a three. Up 6 with 32 seconds and Harden banked in a bricked three to cut it to 3 – a lucky make that shouldn’t have gone (the Lakers probably win this if it doesn’t).

The teams would exchange FTs. The Lakers taking an intentional foul on Harden, the Rockets taking one on Zubac, who made his clutch FTs. The lead was still 3 points with 4.9 left in regulation. KCP was late to react after a switch and didn’t get a challenge in on Gordon. Open three with 2 seconds left and we’re in overtime.

The young Lakers found themselves in their second straight overtime, again a good experience for the kids.

Brandon Ingram would hit a number of shots in overtime, some up against the shotclock, making them doubly clutch. Some redemption for Ingram here as he carried them under the pressure.

They were right in the game, then bad things happened. KCP, who was already 0-6 from three, would make it 0-7 with a horrible deep three attempt in early offense. Still, the Lakers were in the game. They could tie it with a two or win it with a three with 12 seconds left.

A sideline out of bounds play went sideways on them. Hart’s pass was slightly deflected. Kuzma looked like he had control of it anyway, but then fumbled it right out of bounds. That was the dagger.

The Lakers lost 138-134 as the Rockets took 68 threes on the night. But the question is how long did they lose Lonzo?

Ball -- -- He had 7 assists in the first quarter as we scored 39. Really playing well, orchestrating the offense, attacking and keeping the team humming. Then he twisted a left ankle as he collided with a defender in the third quarter (no foul call on the play, either). The game changed at that moment. Luke got ejected shortly later. We put the ball in Ingram’s hands and he was a disaster. The offensive flow stopped. Turnovers cranked up and the lead was lost. In the locker room he was wheeled to get x-rays. They came back negative, but he’s not putting any pressure on the ankle, that’s not a good sign. Clearly, the Lakers can’t afford injuries to this position. Hopefully, LeBron and Rondo return. You just can’t completely gut a team of their star playmakers and hope to survive. Really kind of amazing how we’ve even survived as is, but this is just unfortunate. Lonzo had the team-high +15. His 11 assists might have been more like 16-18 or so had he played out the rest of the game. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He hit Kuzma on the roll for a score. He shed his man and scored a layup off the rim run feed. He attacked, stopped on a dime, pivoted and banked. He swished a long step-back jumper standing on the three line. He scooped up the loose ball and hit McGee for the uncontested breakaway dunk. He grabbed a rebound, pushed it out and hit KCP for the layup. He hit Kuzma for a three on the pick and pops. Inbounds to Hart under the hoop for a layup. He swiped a ball at midcourt, jumping a passing lane. He got a switch, pulled Zubac’s man out and then hit him for the easy score against the small. Quick advance pass to Ingram who took it for the layup. He missed an early offense three. High speed attack off a made basket and he scored the lefty layup at full speed, wow. He missed a stepback three. Second Half: He missed a step-back three.

Kuzma -- -- He fumbled away an inbounds pass down 2 with 11.5 seconds left. Huge turnover. That was kind of the dagger. “I was trying to turn really quick, Harden did a good job getting a tip on it,” he said. Tonight, he was balling right out of the gates. He had 20 points in the first quarter, sinking four threes and showing that elusive mobility that even guards struggle to defend. The shot is getting to the rim slower and softer on those threes. It’s really looking pretty. He took a couple of wild ones, but when he can get into proper form right now, they are looking a lot better. Losing Lonzo probably impacted Kuzma’s ability to get the ball. Ingram went iso crazy (Kuz was actually moving the ball well during that stretch), but he didn’t get too many looks to close this game. They should have set a few more plays up for him. Of course, the last play was his and in the corner with tight D. Not a good looking possession even if he doesn’t turn the ball over. The Stats: He scored 32 points on 12-19 shooting (4-9 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: Easy layup off glass over the smaller help D to start the game. He sank a deep wing three. He sank a corner three on his next touch on a kickout. He missed a fading three. He lost the ball second thinking a pass (I’m guessing), shielded a man since he couldn’t pick it up, got it back and scored the runner. Quick attack in transition and he drew FTs, he made one. He drained a wing three on a pick and pop. He was called for an offensive foul on a leg kickout on a three (he had McGee under the hoop with Harden on him). He faced up on Green, quick first step around him baseline, took contact and muscled in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He iso’d and wasn’t close with a lefty jumphook attempt off glass. He botched a fastbreak with a horrible pass, but we recovered and he swished a pull-up three instead. Ingram saved the ball to him and he hit the floater in the paint. Wild three attempt against the shotclock and he didn’t hit rim (Zu cleaned it up). Great follow on BI’s missed drive to score the putback. He missed a deep three at the end of the half. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. He attacked across the lane, switched hands in and made the shortone with his left. He kicked out to Hart for three. He backed Rivers down, spun and banked in the turnaround. He swiped a pass, jumping the lane, pushed it out and took off too early as he wanted to pass, but finished it anyway. He attacked and was blocked. He got away with a charge on a pass off and McGee dunked. He was fouled on the perimeter, he made both FTs. He attacked from the corner and hit Zubac for FTs on a dunk attempt. He missed a sideline three. He iso’d and traveled on a step-through. Overtime: He gave up an offensive board, not strong enough.

Ingram -- -- Well, he nearly tried to make up for his horrible play in the third quarter with an impressive overtime. He scored 9 points in overtime. Some of them in tough situations against the shotclock. Good experience for him to knock down shots in the pressure cooker. So what was he making up for? As soon as Lonzo went out with injury, Ingram took over the PG duties. Which to him, apparently meant pounding the dirbble for turnovers or misses. Not looking for anyone. Just awful ball and we lost the big lead as a result. So turnover prone during this stretch, it took the Lakers out of their game. “We got away from what we were doing a little bit,” he said. Not sure if he realizes a lot of that was on him. It was Ingram back to that tunnel vision type of game versus the playmaking. The difference in overtime, these were basically shots he had to take and they probably weren’t created with more than a couple of dribbles. I actually even liked his three-point miss. It’s rare you seem him just fire over someone from three unless it’s a kickout. He had Rivers on him, who was much smaller so he was able to see the basket well. Those 6 turnovers earlier, however, were killer. Defensively, he was irked with himself for not coming over to help on Gordon’s three point attempt. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-12 shooting (1-2 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Post up and kickout to Kuzma for the corner three. He missed a turnaround. He missed a flat jumper in the paint. He fed Lonzo under the hoop for FTs. He dribbled around and was stripped. He was stripped again trying to go down the middle of the paint. He gathered the long outlet after it was nearly swiped and hit a trailing KCP for the dunk. Euro step in the paint as the D converged in transition and he scored the layup. Great hustle to the corner to save an offensive board to Kuzma who hit the short one in the paint. He missed a layup after the ball fake on a drive, he drew FTs and made one. He missed a drive in transition, but Kuzma cleaned it up. Second Half: He was fouled off the Euro step in transition for FTs, he made one. He attacked and missed a floater. He iso’d and was called for hooking, turnover. He pounded the dribble, then traveled, having words for the ref about getting bumped with no call. He attacked and charged. He attacked, was stripped and it went right to McGee who scored (I hope they don’t give him an assist for that). He attacked, fumbled the ball again and McGee was tied up fighting for it. He sank a pull-up elbow fade (finally something off all that). Dumb And-1 touch foul on Green on help D. Back in the game, he iso’d on his first touch and drew FTs on a pull-up, he made both. He was stripped on a pull-up but got a foul call with 1:12 left (hand and ball), he made both FTs. Overtime: He swished a tough turnaround jumper with a couple seconds left on the shotclock. He stepped into a wing three and got a kind bounce to drop, big make as Zu was fouled, as well. He got the ball back with a few seconds on the shotclock, attacked, pulled up and drained the 18-footer over the defender as the shotclock went off. He got tapped on a three on iso (rare we see him take that, kind of like it). He blocked a shot. Out of a timeout, he backed his man down and hit the turnaround in the paint to tie it up with 40 seconds left.

Chandler -- -- Man, really quiet night from him. He kind of set the tone early of over helping and letting the Rockets fire away from three and miss again and again. Zubac was a better option tonight, but we didn’t go to him until into the second quarter. The Rockets could hide Harden on him too easily. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Offensive board and easy putback. Offensive board and he drew FTs on the post up, he made one. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- “No legs,” he said of his rushed airball three with 23 seconds left. It was a deep three and he was already 0-6 from three. Why are we even calling his number in that situation? Just awful. He also had a late reaction to a switch and Gordon got a wide open for a wing three and hit with 2 seconds left. Had the Harden assignment quite a bit tonight. We were trying to push him right and off the three line without fouling. The help was sitting back in the paint. It was a reasonable strategy, but KCP really didn’t do a good job of challenging shots at times. Luke got on him for not getting his hands up. Guys are pretty aware of the whistle Harden gets. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-12 shooting (0-7 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a sideline three on a play out of a timeout. He dunked trailing the break as Ingram found him at full speed. He scored a layup, then was knocked over by Harden with no call (Laker bench was irate…then Harden was called for loose ball foul shortly later and Harden was irate). He stripped Harden, then drew a foul on him from behind as he pushed out. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball and took it for a dunk. Second Half: Dumb pull-up attempt in the corner with a man all over him and he hit the side of the backboard. He missed a three on a kickout. He airballed a three and barked at the refs for the no call. He missed a wing three. He missed a heave from 40 at the buzzer. Wow, tried to take a quick three from way deep with 23 seconds left. We needed a much better look than that and he airballed the rushed shot. Horrible.

McGee -- -- Pretty good production from him in short minutes. With the Rockets generally playing small our bigs should have had a big night. Teammates set him up for some good looks, but he also made some things happen like attacking the pressure for FTs or hitting some tricky ones in a crowd. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-8 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He poked a ball loose from behind Harden in transition and Lonzo gave it back to him for the uncontested dunk. Soft finish attempt and he missed. He grabbed a high entry pass and banked in a tricky one. He attacked off the dribble at the three line against pressure D and drew FTs, he missed both. Extra pass in the paint to Beasley for the layup. Second Half: He missed a short one over Harden, got it back, then threw it away. He scooped up a loose ball and scored. He scooped up another loose ball and scored. He dunked off the drive and dish from Kuzma. He dunked off the re-screen and roll with Lance. He grabbed a man on an offensive board to give up FTs, uggh. Overtime: In to rebound with a few seconds left and he nearly lets the Rockets get the miss.

Hart -- -- “I just threw a bad pass,” Hart said, taking the blame on that one that Kuzma fumbled away. It looked like Kuzma had control of it. Hart was clanking threes again. At this point, it’s kind of a surprise when it does drop. Our shooting guards tonight (KCP, Hart and Svi…Stephenson was our PG) combined for an impressive 1-14 from three. Ouch. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He took an inbounds under the hoop and scored a layup. He missed a tough three up against the shotclock. He missed a wing three. He missed a tough bank in a crowd. Second Half: He swished a three on a kickout. He missed an open wing three. He missed another three. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup. He missed a wide open wing three.

Beasley -- -- Short minutes but he was able to create some points. He has that nice jab-step attack from the elbow area that we try to make room for. We’re starting to understand where his spots are. Nice challenge at the rim tonight on D to prevent a dunk. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He iso’d, took a bump on the baseline and hit the And-1 floater, he made the FT. He scored a layup off the extra pass from McGee. He attacked, missed and missed a follow (he wanted the foul). Second Half: He faced up from the elbow, attacked left and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Good challenge at the rim to prevent a dunk. He missed a short one on the baseline. He was stripped in the post, turnover. He missed a corner three.

Stephenson -- -- The Lakers don’t nearly win this game in regulation (frickin’ Harden banking in a three) without Lance’s excellent game. This is the only reason we survived and competed with Lonzo out. Stephenson had the three ball going, making 4-8, but he was also creating for teammates. When Ingram sat and Stephenson was able to take control of the offense late in the third and early in the fourth, the team righted the sinking ship. We’re going to need some kind of performance out of him to compete in the next one, for sure. The Lakers will probably need to bring up Caruso…and play him. Defensively, he was average. The one play where Hart had his hands behind his back trying to defend (basically about as much impact as traffic cone), Stephenson reached in to give up an And-1. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-10 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Great feed from the corner to McGee in the paint, who then hit Beasley for the layup, no assist but he made that happen. He drained a three off a kickout. Second Half: He hit McGee off the re-screen and roll for the dunk. He attacked and got tapped on a layup. He swished a step-back three. He came off the screen and sank a step-back wing three again. He attacked hard off the high screen and drew FTs, he made both. He swished a step-back wing three on iso. He missed a three. He attacked and threw it away, dunk the other way. He attacked and fed Zubac for FTs on the throwdown attempt. He got tapped on a three that would have been a dagger with a few seconds left. Overtime: He iso’d and missed a pull-up sideline three. He crossed over, hung at the rim and scored. He missed a deep three heave at the buzzer.

Zubac -- -- We were kind of late bringing him into the game. I guess we thought he couldn’t manage against the small ball stuff, but he did fine in that regard. Some bogus fouls in overtime took him out of the game. It was three straight and two of those looked like legit, excellent contests. No love. Offensively, how clutch was that FT shooting? He made 9-9 from the line, including a couple with 4.9 seconds left. That shot is so flat, but it’s soft and on the mark. Wish we had some better sets to get the ball to our bigs in the post when they have a small on them. Could have milked that a little more. They mentioned on the broadcast that when LeBron comes back, Zubac is going to be a tough cover. Just before LeBron went out, they were already showing excellent chemistry. Zubac is still motoring along decently even without on LeBron (…and Rondo…and now Lonzo…sheesh). Like to see him get the start in the next game. He’s certainly earning the finishes. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 4-6 shooting (9-9 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 6 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Easy layup when Lonzo got his man to switch on him in the paint and Zu abused the advantage in the paint. He was blocked in the paint. He cleaned up a bricked three with a putback just before the shotclock could expire. Second Half: He got tapped on a basleine jumper hook. He got knocked over on a jumphook for FTs, he made both. Drive and dish from Kuzma set him up for FTs, he made both. He sealed Harden in the paint and scored the easy layup. Lance set him up on a drive and dish and he drew more FTs on a dunk attempt, he made both. He was intentionally fouled with 4.9 seconds left up 1, he made both clutch FTs (ice water). Overtime: He was fouled on the offensive glass and Ingram hit a three, he made the FT. No verticality given on a challenge on Harden to give up FTs, bogus. No love again on a challenge on Nene at the rim, more FTs and his fifth foul. He then fouled out on a loose ball in the paint (so those quick whistles just took him out).

Mykhailiuk -- -- Quiet night. His one make was on a sweet change of direction and drive for a layup. He’s got a lot in his game at his age. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Way short on a pull-up three in transition, didn’t look on balance there. He went between his legs to change directions and blow past the defender for a layup (bench up on that one). He couldn’t finish a lob, again on the break, a few seconds later he was blocked from behind on the break. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Man, the injuries have not made it easy for him. Now Lonzo in the mix. Just devastating our playmaking positions… Luke got ejected shortly after Lonzo’s injury. He said the first tech he deserved. “The second one all I said was you guys are funny. This is really funny.”… Defensive scheme early: Lakers leaving certain players open in order to have extra help on Harden. Rockets missing the open looks. I’d like to see us attack Harden relentlessly on offense. Draw fouls, make him work (they got two fouls in the first half, but didn’t really attack that)… They had an 8-point lead and it was cut to 4. Luke called a timeout and had some words to the ref about something… McGee in… They extended the lead back to 11… Hart in for BI, Svi in for KCP… The Lakers led 39-26 after the first quarter. Kuzma with 20… He started a McGee, Beasley, Stephenson, Hart, Svi lineup… They extended to a 17-point lead, but the offense went a little dry. He sat McGee with 7:42 left for Zubac and Beasley for Kuzma… Ingram and KCP in a possession later to go with Hart… Lonzo in for Hart a possession later after a timeout. Lead down to 13… They extended back to 19 and forced a timeout. Got it above 20 briefly… Chandler in with 2 minutes left up 19… The Lakers led 64-46 at the half… Luke called a timeout as the lead was cut to 13… The Rockets put Harden on Chandler… Hart in for Ball, who got injured… Luke got ejected, angry earlier about the Lonzo injury where Ball got body checked with no call… KCP out for Stephenson… Ingram sat finally with 1 minute left after picking up his fourth foul. He was awful. Lead down to 4… The Lakers led 86-82 heading into the fourth… Shaw started a Zubac, Beasley, Hart, Svi, Stephenson unit… Lance running the offense and hitting threes… A 10-point lead halfway through the quarter… Timeout after a Stephenson turnover and dunk the other way… Ingram in for Hart out of that, Lakers up 7… Lakers took an intentional foul up 3 with 5.7 seconds left, Harden made both to cut it to 1… Zubac made both his FTs to put it to 3 with 4.9 left… No intentional foul opportunity and the game was tied on an open three with 2 seconds left… Overtime, the Lakers quickly fell back by 6 after two straight Rockets threes, but Lakers had a big 4-point possession… Zubac with three quick fouls (some questionable) and he fouled out… Shaw went to Hart (should have gone with a big here for the FT rebound, especially if we’re calling a timeout, but it didn’t cost them). Timeout down 2 with 57 seconds left. What will they draw up? Might have been a third second option, but Ingram backed his man down and hit a turnaround in the middle of the paint to tie it up… KCP with an early offense deep three with 23 seconds left and he airballed. Horrible. Why even give him the opportunity when he’s 0-6 at this point?… Down 2, timeout with 12.6 seconds left. Who do they go to and for what? Chandler in for KCP. Kuzma fumbles the inbounds pass away. Hart said he threw a poor pass. That killed them…

Thanks for the write-up DB.

Heartbreaking loss.

Some boneheaded play by the Lakers. Not covering the perimeter was key. They did a fairly good job on Harden. He lucked out on the banked three and the Lakers hit the boards and made their FTs.

Another learning experience and another injury to Ball! Lakers can't catch a break!

With 28 seconds to go in overtime down one, we get a Lance/Pope pick n pop with KCP airballing a 30 foot shot which he came into at 0-6 from distance. In his last six games, Pope is 6-31 from distance, a whopping 19%. Rumor had it he wanted to be dealt to Houston before they picked up Rivers (who was guarding him on the play).

I can't believe they let this one slip away. Up over 20, masterful first half, everything going their way. And then the wheels just went off. I'm obviously no expert, but how the hell did they let them get away with Harden spending quite a bit of time on Zu in the 4th?

Oh well, onto the next one.

They did try to get the ball into Zubac often. Harden defends similar to how Hart does, meaning it is hard to move him once he is in position. Other factor is what DB described, no LBJ/Rondo/Ball to get him the ball! BI was useless and others are not proficient and efficient.

Heartbreaker... But an encouraging loss. It's one of those "moral victories".

Our kids stepped up. Specially Lonzo. Kid was controlling the game, attacking the rim, making plays. We lost the game when he went out. Hope he's alright.
Zubac icing those freethrows. Beautiful stuff.

Kuzma had a solid 1st quarter, but was eaten alive by Tucker after it. It's part of a learning curve for him. He'll be fine, I think.

But man, what's going on with Hart? Dude can't hit a 3 pointer to save his life lately. And that inbound pass. Jesus.

That KCP shot... Things I'll never understand. Freaking dumb. Why do that with time on the clock?

I hated the officiating. Harden pushes off all the time and never gets called.

I turned off the game at the half despite the Lakers dominating because I can't stand watching Houston.

I figured some jerry rigged BS would occur in the 2nd half and it sounds like it did.

Very bummed to hear about Lonzo going down, he was really starting to step it up.

I feel you, Lanny. Any Houston game I make sure I have a buffer on my DVR. It’s such an ugly style to watch, so if I can fast forward through the free throws and other BS, that makes it more palatable. As soon as Lonzo went down, we were toast. Just can’t have that many injuries to every guy who orchestrates our offense effectively and survive. They were gamers staying in it.

Kuzma had a solid 1st quarter, but was eaten alive by Tucker after it. It's part of a learning curve for him. He'll be fine, I think.

What I do not understand is why the coaching staff did not try and run Kuzma off some screens / picks to get away from Tucker? Instead they left Tucker on Kuzma and went to the other (less talented) guys.

I hated the officiating. Harden pushes off all the time and never gets called.

I just don't watch the Rockets play anymore for this exact reason. It's not a good use of my time. I did catch the end of this game since it was close and some friends wanted to watch before we went out... but yeah. Lonzo
