Disappointment… Losing LeBron, Rajon and Lonzo is similar to losing your starting QB, backup QB and third-string. The wrong series of injuries for the Lakers. While the other two remain out, Rondo returned to the lineup for the Lakers.

Against the Timberwolves at home, the Lakers can ill-afford to lose games like this one.

The Lakers had a 3-point lead at the half but fell back in the third as they gave up a series of second chances, then started doubling the post to give up another series of open scores. Still, they hung tight and were only down by 2 points heading into the fourth.

With Rondo sitting for his first rest of the second half, they quickly fell back by 10 points to the Timberwolves bench. Minnesota took control of the game from there as the Lakers continued to give up second-chance points and faded into the night, eventually falling 120-105.

The Lakers had 20 turnovers that turned into 34 points. They gave up another 22 offensive boards for 32 points. Luke said they worked on box out fundamentals the last couple of days in anticipation of this game, but that just didn’t translate.

“They pushed us around,” he said afterward.

Kuzma -- -- They needed him to step up tonight. Slow start with just 5 points on 2-7 shooting in the first half, but he did have 3 assists. Luke yanked him in the first half to lecture him briefly (I think because of a sequence he didn’t pass on, but could be wrong, could be on about the defensive rebounding). In the second half, he gave up two putback scores to Gibson and Luke gave him the hook. Later he put Hart in on Gibson as Kuzma just couldn’t handle him. Meanwhile, Kuzma was MIA on offense. Very poor night when they needed some punch from someone. He's 0-9 from three in his last two games. He’s a bit banged up right now. “He didn’t look like his normal self tonight,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-12 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls. He was a +0. The Action: He iso’d and missed a floater. He missed a three shortly later. Nice post entry over the fronting D to Zubac for a dunk. He iso’d and traveled. Nice swing pass to Stephenson for a three. He attacked and kicked to KCP for a three. He attacked and missed a lefty runner. Way short on a sideline three in transition. He missed a wing three. He got his man to travel in the paint. Quick attack when his man was complaining about that turnover and Kuzma earned FTs a few seconds later, he made one. Offensive board and his layup was goatended. He hit a running hook on a two-for-one. Second Half: He missed a three straight away. He attacked a lane on the secondary break, missed but Zubac easily cleaned it up. He gave up an offensive board and putback, Luke wanted to yank him. It happened again and Luke called a timeout. He scored an And-1 layup getting low position in early offense, he made the FT. Another offensive board to Saric. He attacked and fed McGee for the reverse jam. He missed a layup after bumping KAT back in the post. Garbage time layup.

Ingram -- He had 10 points on 3-7 shooting in the half and scored another 10 points on 5-7 shooting in the second half. We put him on Wiggins after he torched us to start the fourth quarter, but too little too late at that point. Better D from him there, but prior to that some poor decisions defensively while covering Deng and doubling the post at times. “That wasn’t the scouting report,” Luke said afterward of some of that from BI. Reasonable game from him, but not a lot of impact. Best play of the night came after getting a steal in the passing lane on one end, he iso’d on Wiggins, spun and dunked. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He got KAT in the air on a pumpfake, leaned in and drew FTs, he made both. Slow move on the step-back and he airballed the 18-footer. Quick pushout and easy layup at the front of the rim. He missed a corner three on a kickout. Kickout to Rondo for three. He attacked and hit a running, fading 8-footer. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He missed a pull-up jumper at the end of the quarter. He was fouled on a fading baseline jumper off an inbounds, he made one FT. He got his man in jail and then scored a layup. He attacked in transition at the end of the half and was fouled at midcourt for FTs, he made one. Second Half: He swished a pull-up elbow jumper. He didn’t hit Zubac on the rim run, then was called for an offensive foul on iso. He probed and couldn’t finish. He attacked in early offense and missed the layup, but McGee cleaned it up. He attacked Deng and scored a layup around him. He hit a fade across the lane, cutting off Rondo’s drive. He doubled the post and gave up a layup to Deng. He swiped a pass on one end, iso’d on his man on the other, spun and dunked. Soft bounce on the pull-up elbow jumper and it fell in.

Rondo -- -- Just nice to see someone who can put the ball on time and on target to teammates. Ingram struggles with that. Lance, as well. Hopefully, Rondo can stay on the court healthy from here on out. His first game since Christmas, he came out strong. He had 10 points on 4-8 shooting, 4 boards and 6 assists without a turnover in the first half as the Lakers had the lead. The team was just a -1 while he was out there tonight and -14 when he sat. Competitive with him on the floor, but no help behind him. Some excellent passing to teammates on the move. No one else on the team can make those kind of plays right now. He drained 3-5 from behind the arc and also got to the rim with speed for some scores. Lakers just didn’t have anyone else really sparking them tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 6 boards, 13 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He swiped a ball in the backcourt. He missed a layup. He hit KCP curling for a layup. He swished a three when the D went under the screen. He missed a hook on a drive. He drew KAT’s second foul on a perimeter charge midway through the first quarter. Bounce pass to Beasley for a reverse. Another pocket pass to Beasley for a score. He missed a three. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He busted out in transition, took the outlet and dunked. Speedy attack off the three line and he scored a layup. He hit KCP curling for a layup. He pulled a dribble out to the corner and missed a three. Second Half: He attacked and missed a layup. He found BI for a fade across the lane. He faked the behind-the-back pass and found Beasley for a layup off the interior feed. He harassed Deng in the corner to force a turnover. He blocked a jumper. He found Kuzma down low for an And-1. He attacked and kicked to Hart for an open corner three. He attacked and scored a layup. He threw a pass out of bounds, didn’t look like KCP even tried for it. He sank a wing three on a kickout.

Zubac -- -- Into the starting lineup with his strong play of late. Some good effort on the offensive glass at times. His teammates didn’t really do a good job finding him. He’s have low position, but he ball not coming on time on several occasions. He got stripped a few times in the paint. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-12 shooting to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: Called for a moving screen on the first possession, turnover. He muscled in a layup off of low position. He missed a lefty layup attempt off a pass in the paint. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He posted up, took the pass over the fronting D and dunked. He crashed the glass and tipped in a miss. He rushed a short one, got it back on the other side of the rim and then scored. He showed the ball on a finish and was blocked. Second Half: He traveled trying to back Towns in the paint, needed to keep the dribble alive one more time. He cleaned up the Kuzma missed drive with a putback dunk. Nice D on KAT’s drive to force a pass off, then he worked for the defensive board. He was called for a charge not taking a step in the post, but leaning back, I think (weird). He was stripped on an interior pass. He missed a rushed bank getting the ball late in the post.

Caldwell-Pope -- Aside from a couple of nice sequences where he curled into the paint to take a pass and score, pretty much a worthless night from him. He had an awful defensive play to end the first half as he didn’t hustle back in transition, let his man get past him and score an easy layup. Got to play with intelligent effort and they was neither intelligent or effort. He got some garbage time scores to pad the stats. “We just got to play ball and be free,” KCP said. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a wing three. He curled down the lane, took the pass and scored a layup. He scooped up a loose ball and quickly outlet to Rondo for a dunk. He sank a wing three on the drive and kick from Kuzma. He curled into the paint, took the pass and scored the And-1 over KAT (picking up his third foul), he made the FT. Not close on a three coming off a screen. Awful defense at the end of the half getting out run down court for a layup, no excuse, just lazy. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He was called for an offensive foul trying to push off a defender. He missed a wing three. Token layup in garbage time. And another one.

McGee -- -- Felt like a bogus flagrant-1 they gave him, he turned in the post against a smaller man and caught him with an elbow. That play almost seemed to be the dagger in the fourth quarter. He’s just not bringing that same impact ball from earlier in the season where he was seemingly everywhere. His freethrow shooting has looked awful lately, too, after a good start this season. He missed his only attempt. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-7 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a short one in the middle of the paint to start the second quarter. And-1 dunk off the pocket pass from Beasley, he missed the FT. He blocked a shot in the paint. Intimidation in the paint, forced a pass out and a shotclock violation. Dumb foul on the offensive glass to give up FTs the other way. Second Half: Putback jam off the BI drive and miss. He missed a putback jam attempt, got it back and scored. He hit a quick jumphook on the baseline. Reverse dunk off the drive and dish from Kuzma. Towns went around him on a reach and dunked (why are you reaching there?). Charge in the post on the other end.

Hart -- -- Really not sure if he had any decent plays on the defensive end until maybe when he got moved to the PF. He got torched last game and was again lit up by whomever he guarded in this one up until that point. Meanwhile, he chucked bricks at the rim most of the night. Finally, in at PF in the fourth and he swished a three for his only make from behind the line in five attempts. Really a bad stretch for Hart right now. He got destroyed again tonight and had the team low -17. He’s got to focus on the hustle plays and defensive glass. Try to get his game going off of that. Only 2 defensive boards tonight. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He was called for a travel off the three line, not sure about that one. He missed an open three in transition. He missed an open sideline three. He attacked and threw it away for a dunk the other way. He scored a layup in transition over KAT. Second Half: Not close on a three on a kickout. He swished a corner three on a kickout. Not close on a wing three out of a timeout.

Beasley -- -- Really one of the only guys tonight who seemed like he could score fairly comfortably. Everyone else it looked like a struggled to get points. He helps that second unit that doesn’t have a PG because you can just dump it to him at his spots to go to work. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He reversed in early offense off the bounce pass from Rondo. He scored a layup off the pocket pass from Rondo. He lost a ball for a score the other way shortly later off some poor D (gave up a straight-line drive). He spun in the paint and drew FTs on the short one, he made one. Sweet pocket pass to McGee for the And-1 dunk. Second Half: He took the interior feed from Rondo and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. Jab step, attack and he missed a short one, but McGee cleaned it up. Face up at the elbow, quick spin and he scored a layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish the fading drive.

Stephenson -- -- The offense sputtered a bit as he ran the point in the first half. When Rondo sat in the second half to start the fourth, we lost the game. You really got to think about putting Caruso in for those minutes. It’s just not working with Lance at PG. Get some real PG play for 48 minutes. Lance even seemed like a willing passer tonight, but had 3 turnovers as he just isn’t a PG. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He faked a handoff in transition, attacked and scored a layup. He threw a bounce pass out of bounds. He kicked to Svi for three. He saved a loose ball off a defender to get a possession. He was blocked on a drive. He threw a pass away trying to find Zubac who was open. He drained a corner three off the swing pass. Second Half: He sank a corner jumper, taking a pass from Rondo. He bricked a three next time down calling for the ball. His bounce pass was picked off.

Mykhailiuk -- -- A nice little stretch in the first half where he sank back-to-back threes. I would have liked to see the ball in his hands more as he tends to make things happen. Limited action tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting from three with no other stats in 7 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He swished a corner three on a kickout from Stephenson. He curled from the corner, caught the pass, rose and drained the three next time down. He missed a tough wing three on his next touch. Great job avoiding contact on a close out and he forced his man to throw the ball away. Second Half: He missed a wing three.

Wagner -- -- A few minutes while Luke tried to make a point to other guys about getting defensive boards. Moe gave up an offensive board himself. Not much action and he missed his only shot. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 block in 4 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He missed a three. He gave up an offensive board to Gibson.

Walton -- -- Rondo back and starting. Zubac moved to the starters, as well… The Lakers were down 2 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Zu out with 4:32 for McGee, Lakers down 2. Beasley in for Kuzma… They pulled out to a 4-point lead and forced a timeout… Stephenson and Hart in for Rondo and KCP out of that… Lakers up 29-28 after the first quarter… McGee, Beasley, Hart, Svi, Stephenson to start… Down 3 and Kuzma came in for Beasley. Luke called a timeout down 6 a shot later… Zubac in for McGee, Lakers tied… Kuzma benched for Moe, Luke lecturing him…. Starters back in with Stephenson for Ingram midway through, Lakers up 2… Stephenson out for Ingram, Lakers up 1… Lakers up 5 when McGee came in for Zubac with a couple minutes left… The Lakers led 61-58 at the half. Rondo led the team with scoring and assists as well as being a +5 in the half… Quick timeout by the TWolves at the Lakers scored a couple of early baskets to lead by 7… Kuzma gave up back-to-back putbacks to Gibson and Luke called a timeout to yank him. He had already gotten subs ready, but it happened the next time down and Luke had enough. The lead was erased… Out of that timeout, he brought in Moe for Kuzma… McGee in as Luke then lectured Zubac on defensive rebounding… A 9-0 TWolves run… Stephenson in, KCP out… Moe out for Beasley as Gibson sat, Lakers down 2…Lakers getting burned doubling the post… Hart in for BI, Lakers down 5… Rondo played the entire third… The Lakers trailed 84-82 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Beasley, Hart, Svi, Stephenson lineup. Really need to go with Caruso here… Lakers down 10 points quickly (1:21 into the quarter) with this lineup and Luke called a timeout… He brought in Ingram and Kuzma for Beasley and Svi… Hart and Zubac quickly out for McGee and Rondo down 14… They cut it to 9 to force a timeout… Hart in for Kuzma to play the PF… Bogus flagrant-1 on McGee on the offensive and as he turned and caught a smaller man in the face with an elbow… From there, they were out of it…

Missed large swaths of this game, all I can say is I'm glad Rondo is back if nothing else: -1 with Rondo on the court, -14 with him off
Not a surprise. We need a legit 3rd string PG (now 2nd string with Zo out) a la Bayless, not Lance/BI. Not sure Caruso cuts it

They seem deflated right now.

Time to give Svi more time

Hart has been a big disappointment for a month now.

Kuz is becoming consistently inconsistent.

Yup the bogus flagrant 1 on McGee stopped any momentum for a comeback. We were down 6, and Saric put his face right into McGee as he was making his move. If anything that should have been a foul on Saric. What is Javale supposed to do, he’s tall his arms were up...just a (bleep) call that could have pulled us within 4, and instead the lead jumped to 10 pts on that play alone.

Refs are garbage

Kuzma said he is battling a hip injury and it is getting worse. If Lebron was here I am sure Luke would cut his minutes / sit him to let him recover but now is not the time.

Another let down game. I had a feeling they'll pull out the W when they went up 7. But other coaches always seem to call timely breaks, so their teams don't fall back too much. Luke has much to learn.

Good to have Rajon back, though. I'm always on the edge of my seat when Brandon runs point.
