Competitive, But Shorthanded… An up-and-down game from the Lakers. Actually, that’s down, up, and then back down.

They trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, then led by 10 in the third quarter before the Warriors turned the tables on them and ran away with it in the fourth to win 115-101.

The Lakers got a bit of a pregame surprise when the decision was made to let LeBron sit this one out after the big overtime win the other night. So no LBJ and Lonzo, that’s a tall task to get a second win on the road against the Warriors.

The Lakers slipped to tenth in the standings. That’s why you need to win those easier ones we had in January.

“Really happy again with the fight our guys had. It seemed like we ran out of gas a little bit down the stretch there,” Luke said.

...And now we resume programming back to the AD watch.

Kuzma -- -- A bit of a boring game from him. He wasn’t much of a continual threat offensively. The perimeter shot wasn’t really there for him. He got posterized by Cousins on a dunk when he was a little late to take a charge, but Luke commented on that afterward. “He knew he was late but he still sacrificed his body and tried to get in there and give up his body for a stop. He didn’t get out the restricted but that’s the mentality we want and the attitude we want,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-12 shooting (1-4 form three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He couldn’t finish a short one off the great drive and dish from Ingram. He attacked and missed a drive, but follow dunked a Zubac miss. He missed a wing three. He attacked and dumped it off to McGee for the jumper. He missed an elbow jumper. He dunked off the feed from Hart in transition. He took his eyes off a pass and fumbled it out of bounds. He drew FTs off a Euro-step as he curled into the lane, he made both. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup over his man. Second Half: He swished a wing three off the catch. He drew a foul on the offensive glass to regain possession. He popped out and missed a wing three. He missed a three straight away at the end of the quarter. He missed a step-back 21-footer on iso. He was fouled on a quick counter strike in transition after a made basket, he made both FTs. He lost the ball on the dribble.

Ingram -- -- Pretty good first half, scoring, trying to move the ball and take advantage in transition and get to his spots. But, man, he got into iso ball hell in the second half. Just an awful game from that point on where he was forcing up challenged shots instead of passing. The Warriors weren’t biting on his pumpfakes and challenged him tightly for a number of bricks. The offense just got stuck in mud when the ball was in his hands. “That just makes their defense that much better,” Luke said of the team resorting to iso ball. Good for him getting 20 points, but 21 shots while not contributing to any offensive flow turned it into just a poor game after a good start. He at least recognized afterward he should have passed a bit more. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-21 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: No seal and Green stepped around him to steal a pass and take it for a score. He scored a layup on the counterstrike in transition off that. He missed a corner three. He threw a bounce pass out of bounds trying to hit Kuzma. He tried to lean in to draw a foul on a jumper and airballed. He attacked Durant and missed a runner. He probed and missed a baseline jumper. He drew FTs off a layup attempt over Green, he made both. He iso’d against Green and eventually hit a tough fade over him. He attacked from the wing, through contact and scored the layup. He iso’d and missed the midrange from the wing. He backed it out and hit a long jumper just beating the shotclock. Quick attack in transition, he hung and scored the short one on the baseline. Second Half: He got into the paint, faked one way, went the other and hit the fade. He didn’t hit rim on a long wing jumper. Out of a timeout, he backdoored his man off a screen and Rondo threaded a pass to him under the hoop for the dunk. He relocated to the corner after giving it up, got it back and sank the jumper. He forced up and missed a tough turnaround jumper. He forced up a brick after his man didn’t bite on the pumpfake (got to pass those). He iso’d and forced up a tough one from midrange and missed. Quick first step to get past his man for a layup. He iso’d and airballed a long jumper.

Rondo -- -- He orchestrated the offense and helped the team hang in there for three quarters without LeBron and Lonzo. He covered Green to start the game and we got away with that for quite a bit. Some excellent passes to help setup teammates. He still has a head scratcher or two per game on some things he does, but he at least makes us competitive. Great job also leading the guys. Mic’d up, you could hear him encouraging Zubac in the first half and Zu had a better second half. The Stats: He scored 12 on 5-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: Horrible pass out of bounds after KCP was open a second earlier. His layup was blocked. He missed a pull-up jumper from 16 feet. He attacked off a screen and scored a layup. Transition screen-roll and he lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He curled around a man and scored a layup. He stripped Curry and scored a layup. He missed a three, we got it back to him and he drained a corner three just beating the shotclock. He attacked and couldn’t finish a layup. Off the mark on a kickout pass, turnover. He was blocked out of bounds on a drive. He found Stephenson under the hoop for a score. Sneaky change of pace, he got into the paint and bounced to Zubac for the And-1. Second Half: He gave the ball up of the double drag screen, cut and Zubac hit him for the layup. He missed a three up against the shotclock. He hit KCP on the curl for the layup. He bounced to Zubac changing ends for the dunk. He threaded a bounce pass to Ingram coming off a baseline screen for a dunk. He missed a long wing jumper. His pass was picked off out of a timeout for a dunk the other way. He lobbed to McGee in early offense for the dunk. He was blocked off a ball-fake and layup attempt. He drew FTs trying to create on the perimeter against the shotclock, he made one. He iso’d and missed a three.

Zubac -- -- A bit slow to start in this game, then he got more competitive as it went along. He was disrupting Cousins in the paint. Great job beating him down court, as well, for a dunk during a key stretch. Really like the pass he had tonight off a double drag screen set. Rondo gave the ball up to KCP, who hit Zu in the paint and he immediately fed it back to Rondo for the uncontested dunk. Text book sequence there. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-11 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a jumphook. He hit a short one in the paint off the interior feed. Putback miss, but Kuzma cleaned it up. He was stripped under the hoop. He scored an And-1 layup off the drive and dish from Rondo, he missed the FT. Second Half: Nice feed off the double-drag play to Rondo for the uncontested layup. He forced Cousins into a turnover with a challenge. Great job changing ends after outletting, he got the bounce pass back in stride and dunked. He missed a short one. He denied Cousins under the hoop. Great job changing ends after we got a steal and he scored a putback on a missed three in transition. He was called for a moving screen on a handoff. He dunked off the roll pass from Bonga. He bricked a 17-footer.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- When we were taking it to the Warriors, KCP was in the thick of it with a couple of threes. He had the team worst -19, but he played much better than that. Good work off the ball tonight to get open or even get on the offensive glass (3 offensive boards). Not sure what was going on from the line, he went 0-3 tonight, including missing a tech in a key stretch where the Warriors were getting some momentum. “We fought,” KCP said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 0-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 steals and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He was blocked on a corner three, got it back, attacked baseline and drew FTs on Cousins, he missed both, uggh. He attacked and picked up Cousins second foul with 10:11 left. He missed a step-back three. He missed a short one trying to draw a foul. Second Half: He scored a putback layup off a bricked jumper. He curled to his left, took a pass and scored the layup. He drained a three trailing the break. He sank a wing three off a scramble play after scooping up a loose ball on the other end. He missed a tech. He sank a pull-up 16-footer off the high screen. He missed a step-back corner three.

McGee -- -- JaVale McGee received his championship ring prior to this game, a delayed Christmas present as he was out sick last time we were up here. He was wearing his previous ring around his neck tonight. Hope the young guys all saw it. Get them hungry. Rondo found him on a couple of nice sequences off the two-man game for dunks. Good to see those two exploring that action again where McGee is at his best. At his worst, he’s making dumb plays for turnovers. He had a couple of those tonight. He also looked a bit stiff when he returned to play in the second half before getting warmed up. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He was called for an offensive foul. He ball-faked and hit a floater. He sank a 14-footer off a dump off from Kuzma. He dunked off the screen-roll from Rondo. He missed a three on an inbounds trying to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He posted up and was fouled on a turnaround, he made one FT. He threw down a lob from Rondo in early offense. He traveled trying to create between two defenders.

Hart -- -- Scoreless, but I liked seeing him in paint pulling down boards or defending and blocking Cousins in the post. His only three attempt was an awful off-balance look in transition. He needs to get into his fundamentals more if he wants to get out of his shooting slump and slow that kind of shot down. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He traveled off the three line after he got his man in the air. He knocked a pass away getting into the passing lane, pushed it out and hit Kuzma for the dunk. Not close on an off-balance three in transition. He attacked and missed a floater. Second Half: He took an elbow from Durant to draw an offensive foul (Durant threw the ball at him, Josh chucked it back to each get techs). Cousins tried to attack him in the post and Hart blocked him on iso D (that’s why you don’t send the double when Hart’s defending the post).

Beasley -- -- A couple moments in the first half where he got into good space for scores. He forced a couple poor looks in the second half, but overall, his minutes were low. I think we had him at the C when we went small with Wagner briefly since he’s stronger. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He faced up at the elbow, attacked left and hit the short baseline jumper. He sank a 12-footer flashing to the ball. Second Half: He faced up at the top of the key and missed the jumper out of a timeout. He pushed it up and bricked a 12-footer that was challenged well. He attacked Cousins and earned FTs, he made both.

Stephenson -- -- He killed us with those 4 turnovers and some poor decisions. He had several turnovers in the second half that helped get the Warriors some momentum (with Iguodala hitting threes over him on the other end). Luke needed to sideline him. Instead, he left him in. Then, after finally sitting him, brought him back shortly later when we went small. What the heck? I thought Luke had a good feel with Lance of when he’s off, you sit him. He seemed like he leaned on his good play from the last game and got destroyed as a result. One of those things where he was the best player on the floor for the Warriors. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-13 shooting (2-8 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a layup on a drive. He sank a wing three. He outlet to Moe changing ends for the And-1 layup. He rained a step-back three on iso. He was called for a charge that looked like a flop. He missed a step-back three. He missed a tough three up against the shotclock. He missed a layup off an interior feed but follow tipped it in. He decided not to attempt a half-court heave at the buzzer. Second Half: He stepped out of bounds on his first touch. He swiped a ball, pushed it up and missed a three. He was called for a travel trying to attack after a fake. Tied up trying to take it into a crowd, he needs to reel it in. He sank a pull-up wing jumper off the high screen. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He threw a pass away under the hoop. Not close on a corner three.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He didn’t get in until the game was over. He sank his only attempt. As bad as Lance was playing, we probably should have pulled Svi into the mix at some point. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting in 2 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He sank a jumper from the top of the key.

Bonga -- -- Brief garbage time appearance. Not much time to do much, but he did make a nice pass to Zu for a score. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 2 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He found Zubac rolling for a dunk. He iso’d and missed a runner.

Wagner -- -- He changed the feel of the game for the Lakers in the first half. They were down big, but he gave the Lakers some nice competitive spirit off the bench (as well as some scoring). Love seeing the fire after he scored an And-1 over Green on the break. He was yelling, jerked away from Green, annoying him so much that Green gave him a small shove that Moe probably didn’t even feel. “One of our better talkers,” Luke said of Moe’s mouth. He doesn’t care, he’ll talk trash to anyone. Really didn’t like that we didn’t go back to him in the second half. And when we did go small as a desperation attempt, we brought back in Stephenson of all people for Zubac. Lance was awful. Give credit to Luke for the sub in the first half that helped change the game, but it was a bit of a head scratcher in the second half. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-3 shooting (1-1 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He up-faked at the three line, attacked from the corner and scored the layup. He leaked out as we got a rebound, took the long outlet and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He drained a three trailing the break. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- He said not having LeBron forced them to change up their defensive plans and the guys were a little late to adjust to that… He called a timeout after the Lakers gave up a series of transition scores, Lakers down 7… McGee in for Zubac out of that 4 minutes into the game… The Lakers fell back big, but trimmed the lead a little with a series of scores from McGee to force a timeout… Lance, Hart and Zubac in… The Lakers trailed 33-24 after the first quarter… He started a Wagner, Beasley, Hart, Ingram, Stephenson lineup… Wagner giving the Lakers more mobility and competitive spirit… They cut it to 4… Rondo in for Ingram down 6… Kuzma in for Beasley… The lead was down to 1 and they forced a timeout… Still down 1 despite several turnovers. Ingram now in for Stephenson with 4 minutes left… Zubac in for Moe, with 3:32 left down 1… Timeout 30 seconds later down 5… Stephenson back in for Hart… They trailed 63-58 at the half, keeping Curry from scoring. A lot of help being sent and it sometimes blew up on them, but they stayed in it… The Lakers took a lead with 8:32 left and forced a timeout… A couple minutes later, they were up 10… The lead was trimmed back to 3 late in the quarter and Luke called a timeout… Hart and McGee in… Lance in for Rondo, Lakers up 1… The Lakers trailed 88-86 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Kuzma, Hart, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… Lance with a couple of turnovers and Iguodala hit a couple of threes to force an early timeout. Got to take Stephenson out… Instead, he went with Ingram and Beasley for Kuzma and Rondo… KCP back in for Hart down 7 with 7:48 left… Lakers losing touch here with this lineup. Rondo in for Stephenson, finally but they were down 10… Kuzma in for Beasley… He went small, but not with Wagner, bringing Stephenson in for Zubac instead. Weird… Really don’t like lineups this quarter and letting his guys get it handed to them without a lecture or two on selfish play… He finally called a timeout, game all but over now… Garbage time lineup for the last couple minutes…

Thanks DB!

Better than I expected with LeBron out. Glad Rondo's wheel is OK.

Thanks DB.

Like TooMuchMajicBuss said, better than expected, in fact that 10 point lead in the 3rd got my hopes up high. Too bad the team and Luke decided to throw it away. When you have old man Andre lighting you up like that, playing silly offense and questionable rotations I guess you don't deserve better. What the heck was that 4th Q line-up with Beasley, who sat out the majority of the game. To this day I still cannot figure out Luke and the reasoning behind his substitution patterns.

Oh well, onto the next.

At least is was competitive for a while. Kuz still not right, BI really did suck 2nd half and Lance was terrible. Nice to see Mo get some minutes and do well.
