I hate all this race card stuff, I think much of the time it is a lazy argument.

I have always been a big Magic fan, one of the top 5 all time Lakers, very successful in business and re-inventing himself after his HIV diagnosis.

The writing was on the wall, when we couldn't get PG13, this was going to be a transition year. And up until Lebron and Rondo got hurt, we were 4th in the friggin western Conference, 4th with just one real star. He was willing to give away the entire store to get AD here, right or wrong, Magic is all in on getting another star player.

Magic has been so willing to push things, he has gotten fined for tampering, and despite most of the league being against us, and willing to trade with almost anybody else, the Lakers are still gunning for another star.

In hindsight, I wish we had found a way to keep DLO and to keep Zubac. Most of the other moves I have either agreed with or understood why we went the way we did. But I don't blame him or anyone else for their mistakes because of the color of their skin.

Random pluckings from LG threads (I will not cite the OPs in order to avoid flame wars):

Try to bring back Jerry West as a Consultant. Pay him whatever he asks for.
Appoint Ryan West as GM, and Jesse Buss as Owner and President as well as keeping him on the scouting department. Put Joey Buss as president of Basketball Operations. Jeanie Buss demoted to Alternate Governor.
- Let's get an all white male brain trust and Jeanie can go back to getting her nails done on game day.

Nothing will change so long as Jeannie is in charge. That's the problem with hiring people you're personally close to. I can see her firing Luke eventually if enough pressure is applied from the other decision-makers, but Magic? He's going to have to step down himself if we want to be rid of him. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen until the worst damage is done. - Women are too emotional to make the tough call.

But Jeanie because she refuses to believe it cause "we're the Lakers" just empowered people that thought like her. Wonder what she'll blame when it's apparent the plan still isn't working, or rather falters for many a reason. - Chicks live in a fantasy land & are incapable of making real world decisions.

Why do all the good looking ones have yeast infections, or crabs, or just general stank poon? Damnit. - If anything bleeds for 3 days, shoot it!

- Magic remains the VP of Basketball operations, but mostly serves as a liaison with Business Ops for and Basketball Ops. Pelinka and his staff will make "basketball decisions", and Magic can only veto a decision with Jeanie's sign off. - The black guy's not smart enough to have discretionary authority.

While not perfect, we were rebuilding nicely, but Jeanie was obsessed with the media portrayl of what the Lakers are supposed to be. If she hadnt stepped in (against Dr. Buss's wishes), we would have had all that talent growing together with Luke and we probably would have had West as well (who has a close relationship with Mitch). Amazing how ego can be destructive - Women are all about ego and cannot see the big picture.

For Jeanie, it's personal and it may cloud what needs to be done.

Same for Magic. Jeanie is really close with Magic and probably considers him a brother, so doing whatever needs to be done may be difficult.
- Women cannot make cold, hard business decisions.

Jeanie inherited Jim and he didn't have the flash and showmanship that she appears to be fond of. - Women prefer style over substance.

Bring back Showtime, right? Because that's all Jeannie and Magic know, and it doesn't look like they want to adapt to how the modern game is played, both on and off the court. They want to emulate Dr. Buss, but don't recognize that one of his greatest traits as owner was that he acknowledged what he didn't know and left the day-to-day decisionmaking to people who actually knew what they were doing and were great at it. - They don't have the necessities to operate in the real world.

Not to mention her twitter profile picture. Any other CEO posting that would be fired by the board of directors. Crazy! - She's trying to get by on her looks.

Magic has made some clear mistakes, acting out of emotion and spite and wanting to erase whatever Jim and Mitch had done. - He's not capable of rational thought.

"warm memories os Jim as our leader" Well, at least Jim did not pose for a mens magazine in his older years. At least Jim did not host thousands of s*x parties (where who knows how many women/men may may been taken advantage of). At least Jim was not accused of rape. At least Jim did not parade around with young escorts. - White men know how to conduct themselves with dignity.

[The bolded parts are my translations of the underlying messages.]

I must have missed the part where Luke Walton morphed into a black female over night. Surely that's the main reason why so many fans want to see him gone.

Business as usual.

Bob: "Hank, are you a racist or a sexist?"
Hank: "Nope. Are you, Bob?"
Bob: "Nope. Must be some chick on her period or one of 'Those people' whining again."
Hank: "Yep. 'Those people' see racism & sexism everywhere. That's why I'm glad none of them live in this neighborhood."

Let's refute the premise but not the argument. Hey, what this team REALLY needs is an 80-year old white male who got fired from his last gig . . .

No twisting of facts here. So contract running out is fired? Not to mention West has brought several championships as GM. Got us Kobe and Shaq as FA which led to another 4 after he left(was part of 2000 one).

Those who bash Magic doesn't rate Luke or Pelinka either. Let's not also forget Phil got killed by NY media when he was doing a terrible job just like Zeke.

Well, they refused to extend his contract when he wanted them to do so.

Not denying that JW did good work here - 36 years ago when they put him in charge up until 19 years ago when he quit. Kurt Warner did a heckuva job QBing the Rams to a SB win 19 years ago, too, but no one is trying to bring him back.

I think its ridiculous to attribute this to race.
With that said, Magic did amazingly well as a GM. He brought LeBron. The freaking LeBron James If someone told you that a year ago you'd think its pure fantasy. And what he's horrible now because he failed to bring Anthony Davis too? Lol.

The issue is the comments and motivations behind them. Saying Magic is bad at the job because you didn't like the DLO trade is valid. Saying Magic - who played in the NBA for 13 years, served in an advisory capacity for several more years, then worked for another sports franchise for a couple of years - has no business having the job - is invalid. Particularly so when you characterize him using stereotypes and old code words. The only thing I haven't seen used here is Magic's "Watermelon Grin."

Without meaning any disrespect, I think this thread is ridiculous and your example "translations" are ludicrous. What's next? They haven't picked a white male MVP for the Shaqtin A Fool show so far because of "white male privilege"?

I'm not white and yet just don't see the same things you are. So I'm not going to get involved in a debate here. When someone sees race/gender as a motive behind everything, it is very hard to get them to realize that not everything is about race/gender or even about them. Well, it's either that... or you're a very clever troll, lol.

I'm an asian who went to a high school in Tulsa Oklahoma in early and mid 90's, so I know what it means to be a minority and can tell racism when I see one.

There is none here.
Magic making a mockery out of this franchise has nothing to do his race. Mark Jackson being a world ass clown religious freak has nothing to do with him being black. Byron Scott didn't get fired bc of his race.
