The Thinking Basketball guy has put out an occasional video analysis of specific players. He has focused on the younger players: Ball, Fox, Tatum, and now Simmons. These are interesting videos. Even if you don't agree with his conclusions, he does a thorough job of breaking down each player's game.

December 26: DeAaron Fox

January 5: Lonzo Ball

January 13: Jason Tatum

January 19: Ben Simmons

Jeeze, the titles.

Fox: The NBA's Most Improved
Tatum: Still a future superstar? (Is he still the next Kobe? is the poster)
Simmons: The point Big Man (Does he really need a jumper?)

...

Ball: Scrub or Star? (Is Lonzo Ball Any Good?)

Yes and no. Perfectly representative of the narrative on Ball thus far, but not representative of his actual play. To wit, I think it's clear that Lonzo is some good, although it's definitely an open question as to whether he is a star (the answer currently being a flat no).

Fox:just short of being all-star caliber
Ball: strong role player
Simmons: low-level all-star
Tatum: sub all-star

Nothing too disagreeable, although he continues to perpetuate this myth that Kobe is a mediocre passing wing. I still conclude the guy is a dilettante.

I like the layup pass % stat. To me that is one of the most valuable assists but a lot of players can drive and kick it out.

This is actually the first video he made. I didn't see it until now.

Trae Young: The Undersized QB

Some of the comments about his defense are just brutal, such as comparing him to a traffic cone.

Thankfully for Trae he doesn't need to be good at defense - he just needs to be not horrific.

For his sake, let's hope he doesn't turn into another Isaiah Thomas. Some of those clips of Trae as a rookie remind me of IT as a veteran.

Trae is a much better passer than IT.

I was referring to his defense. Yes, he is a much better passer than IT.

Marvin Bagley III: The Future of Old School

Another ugly defender, but not as bad as Trae Young.

very interesting... what struck out to me is how Kobe played a big chunk of his career in this so called "dead ball" era where points were harder to come by, yet thats never a factor brought up in mainstream discussions of where he ranks among GOATs

That’s true, and it also applies to Shaq.

I liked the visual history of the evolution of the dribbling rules. I’ve never seen it laid out that well.
