The Playoff Hunt… It’s a tough road to the playoffs. After the All Star break, the Lakers have 25 games with 16 against playoff teams. Tonight, it was against a health Rockets team.

The Lakers were seemingly gifted three early fouls on Harden after 6 minutes to start this game – a potential advantage to press as the Rockets star sat early and watched from the bench. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out as well as one would hope. The Rockets pulled out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter.

Fast forward to the third quarter as the Lakers fell back by 19 points after a poor start to the half. Luke shuffled the lineup and went small, bring in Josh Hart for JaVale McGee. The move seemed to active the defense as the Rockets struggled to hunt for easy mismatches.

Slowly, the Lakers chipped away at that lead.

Heading to the fourth, down just 7 the game was in reach. The Lakers dominated the glass, they got stops and hit their freethrows (27-33). They held the Rockets to just 16 points in the fourth.

Huge defensive plays by both Kuzma and LeBron down the stretch, both standing in on help D rotations to take charges against Harden’s drives. Behind the strong D and small ball lineups, the Lakers won 111-106.

Hopefully, this sets the tone for the Lakers as they try to regain momentum and make a run for the playoffs.

LeBron -- -- The Lakers were in full playoff mode intensity tonight it seemed. LeBron set the tone coming out of All Star break and the young guys seemed to follow tonight. In the first half, he was sloppy with the ball. He scored 13 points on 5-13 shooting to go with 6 boards in the first half. He had several turnovers just not on the same page with guys he was passing to early on. But the team cleaned it up as the game went along. LeBron also looked to impose his will and get to the rim. He had a massive, elevating throwdown in the second half that had the crowd buzzing. When he does that, you know he’s feeling better. Huge drive late in the game to find Bullock for that open three. Really loved seeing how he and Ingram were able to mesh effectively in this game. It was some effective tag team work by the two. Defensively, he wasn’t as stuck in mud as he had been recently. There were moments where he wasn’t moving, but it wasn’t as bad as before the break. He came up huge with that great rotation to foul Harden out on the charge. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-23 shooting (0-4 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 11 boards (3 offensive), 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He threw a pass out of bounds on the first possession on a miscommunication. He sank a wing jumper. He missed a wing jumper on iso. Turnover on some more confusion on the perimeter. He found BI deep in the paint for a score. He missed a layup over Harden he should have had. One bad pass led to another, turnover. Quick attack in transition and he scored a layup. He reversed off the handoff from BI under the hoop. He got a stop on a one-on-three break. He missed a wing bank in transition. He scored a lob layup on a mismatch under the hoop. He attacked, spun, was blocked, got it back and drew FTs, he made one, got his missed tapped to him and he missed a three. He missed a drive, got it back and muscled in a layup. He sealed a defender, pulled a help defender over and kicked to Bullock for a three. He changed directions, took a bump and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a floater, crashed the glass had his arm pulled from behind by CP3 for FTs, he missed both. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He attacked and lost the ball taking contact on the perimeter. He scored a layup in transition after a hesi and change of directions. He couldn’t finish a layup over Rivers. He dunked off the dish from Kuzma in transition. He attacked baseline and drew FTs on a layup attempt, he made both. He grabbed a board and outlet to Kuzma for a dunk. He grabbed a board, pushed it out, spun and scored a layup. He sank a wing three, just beating the shotclock (foot on the line). Outlet to Hart changing ends fast for a layup. He missed a corner three. Wow, he put on a burst of speed, elevated and hammered a huge dunk. He got downhill in transition and drew FTs against the backing up D, he made both. He iso’d and missed a long three, not a good look. He attacked Capela and muscled his way to a tough, hanging layup. He iso’d with the clock winding down, attacked and kicked to Bullock for the corner three. He then drew a charge on Harden on help D, standing in on a rotation, huge. He iso’d and missed a wing jumper to go up by 8, instead they lead by 4 with 55 seconds left.

Kuzma -- -- Not a big number first half, but he was moving the ball (3 assists) and playing some pretty good D on the other end. This was a scrappy, well-rounded game from him. That defensive effort paid off big when he rotated over late in the game to take a charge on Harden to get a stop. LeBron would do the same shortly later and the Lakers would foul Harden out. Nothing was forced tonight, and Luke’s got to be happy with the 5 assists. They’ve really been stressing the passing and, of course, his impact defensively and there were good signs of both tonight. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-13 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a runner in transition over CP3 (got to make those). He sank a wing three on a kickout. Good D on Harden to force a miss. He got split on D to give up a layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked and kicked to Bullock for a three. He found McGee for a score next time down. He faced up and blew past Harden for a dunk. He got pushed by Harden with no call and lost the ball (would have been Harden’s third…which KCP drew a second later). Bad chuck on a wing jumper that didn’t hit rim (should have taken the easier three). Great job going vertical to get a stop at the rim. Nice challenge on a drive to get a stop. He missed a short one. Second Half: He threw a bounce pass away in transition. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed an open wing three. He iso’d and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked in transition and fed LeBron for a dunk. He missed a floater but tipped the follow in. He took the long outlet and dunked. Pushing foul out of a timeout, turnover. He knocked down a wing three on a tap out of an offensive board. He missed a wing three on a swing pass. He had the chair pulled on him and traveled. He stepped in to take a charge on Harden’s drive, great job. He made a couple clutch FTs with 21 seconds left.

Ingram -- -- Strong first half with a 15 points on 5-9 shooting and 6 boards. He was getting downhill for scores and getting to the line. He missed all three threes he took (good looks off ball movement), but he was hitting his FTs. He came up big with those down the stretch, as well. We called his number late in the game to earn some big ones that ended getting the Rockets to implode with techs. He was frustrating CP3, I think. Defensively, that length makes up ground. He was also superb on the defensive glass. When he’s back there going after boards, he gets them if he wants them. That reach was beautiful, snatching boards out of the sky on his way to 13 rebounds. The numbers tonight were superb. He didn’t settle for those pull-ups, instead he tried to get downhill whenever he could and that plays to his strengths. Loved, loved, loved the FT shooting in this game. When you combine that attacking with making your FTs, look out. He can do his Harden impersonation, too, on the drives apparently. “Rebounding the ball and knocking down freethrows allowed us to win the game with the amount of turnovers we had,” Luke said. LBJ mentioned the rebounding, as well, saying it activates his games. Get after the glass like that, BI. Lakers only gave up 4 offensive boards. He had 4 turnovers in this one as Harden had a few strips on BI on drives. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 8-16 shooting (0-3 from three, 11-14 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a corner three. He got downhill on a drive from the wing for FTs, he missed both. He blew past Capela on a switch and finger rolled in a layup. He took a bounce pass deep in the paint, up-faked and scored the layup. He turned a corner off a screen, change directions, bumped a big for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He attacked, spun and missed the layup. He handed off to LeBron under the hoop for a score. He missed a wing three. Lost in transition, he gave up a dunk to his man. He changed directions and drew FTs after hearing the whistle, he made both. Not close on a corner three (not sure if it hit anything). Out in transition, downhill and he easily scored around the defender. He attacked, drew the help and was hacked for FTs, he made both. He iso’d and swished a pull-up jumper over a big. Second Half: He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He iso’d on Harden and missed the jumper (attack that). Interior pass to McGee for FTs. He was stripped in transition. He got downhill, stumbled and somehow reversed in a tough one while falling. Called for a charge trying to attack (weak). He iso’d and hit a pumping turnaround. He drew FTs battling on the offensive glass, he made both. He forced his man into a travel staying in front of him on a drive. He attacked, spun and missed a layup wanting the foul. He forced Harden into an airball on his step-back three. He iso’d and was stripped for a layup the other way. Quick attack getting downhill after a rebound and he scored an easy And-1 layup, he made the FT. He iso’d out of a timeout and was called for using an off-arm, turnover. He got CP3 to turn it over on the other end with some feisty D. XXX He was fouled on the defensive glass with 2:10 left, he made one FT. Ball in Ingram’s hands out of the timeout, he attacked and drew FTs at the rim with 33 seconds left, he made both.

Bullock -- -- “I’m glad they came and found me,” Reggie said of the Lakers. He grew up a fan, got to suit up in Staples and come up big. Clutch three shooting. He went 3-6 in the first half from behind the arc. Lots of good looks for him. In the second half, his only make was huge, possibly the biggest make of the game as LeBron kicked out to him in the corner. He rose up behind Ingram’s screen and sank the open look. Huge. Defensively, we saw the Lakers go to one of those positionless type of lineups late in the game with a lot of interchangeable players defensively. He had a fair amount of defending Harden at the point of attack. Definitely some of the better D we’ve had on Harden. The team as a whole did great. Much better than watching guys with their hands behind their back ushering Harden right to the rim. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-8 shooting from three (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1steal and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a wing three on a catch and shoot. He missed a wing three from the other side. He sank a sideline three on a kickout from Kuzma. He got tapped on a wing three in transition. Wide open and he sank a corner three. He sank an open sideline three off the kickout from LeBron. Good D on Harden in the corner to force a brick. Second Half: He missed a wing three to start the second half. Huge corner three on the LeBron kickout with 1:31 left to go up 6. He made a couple of tech FTs.

McGee -- -- Strong first half, being active on the glass, giving the Lakers second-chance opportunities as well as patrolling the paint and denying Harden a couple of times. That got into Harden’s head a little as he started going to floaters versus trying to get contact and finish at the rim. Later in the game, it was the Lakers small lineups, rotating, drawing charges and controlling the glass. The Rockets methodically look for mismatches for their iso games, so we saw CP3 trying to pick on McGee some. Once we brought Hart in for McGee in the third, the game changed as they couldn’t hunt those mismatches as easily. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He rejected Harden at the rim. He tapped out a missed rebound and it led to a score. He kicked out an offensive board and it led to a three. He flashed to the ball, got bumped and hit the tough And-1 turnaround, he made the FT. Nice leakout and we found him for the score on the long feed. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He kept a missed FT alive. He got tapped on a jumphook off a post-up. He swatted Harden’s floater out of bounds. Second Half: He trailed the break, took the pass and finished high at the rim. He was fouled off an interior pass for FTs, he made both. Soft finish attempt around Harden and he missed. He flashed to the ball and hit the jumphook off the corner entry play.

Rondo -- -- He led the team with 5 assists in the first half, but the team was a -13 while he was out there. The Lakers closed without him. Defensively, it’s just too much of an issue at times for big minutes. When we reduced his minutes and Stephenson’s we locked in. I think with LeBron as that point forward, we’re going to see more of these lineups where BI defends the point with his length and LeBron runs the offense while some of these vets sit. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He threw a pass out of bounds trying to find Chandler over the fronting D. He iso’d and bricked the one-footed fade. He found KCP in the corner off an inbounds for the three. He hit LeBron for a lob layup. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He attacked and flipped in a layup. He found Bullock for a wide open three. His layup was blocked. His bounce pass was picked off, dunk the other way. Second Half: He attacked and hit a cutting Hart for a layup. He kicked back to KCP trailing for a three. His jump pass was deflected (had a three he didn’t take). He drew an offensive foul on Harden at midcourt on a reach.

Caldwell-Pope -- Slow start, but he picked it up a little later. He would have had three threes in this game, but one of them was erased after the fact as he didn’t get it off before the shotclock expired. That was a rough stretch as the Lakers came back from a timeout and had KCP’s three erased and one of LeBron’s downgraded to a two. That 4-point switch didn’t bother the team. They kept the intensity rolling right through it. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-8 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a pull-up from midrange. He missed a corner three on a kickout. Horrible pass out of a timeout for a turnover. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three on a kickout. He swished a corner three on an inbounds. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He missed a half-court heave. He sank a wing three on the kickback in transition. He then drew a moving screen call to get a stop a few seconds later. He swished a wing three on a kickout, just beating the shotclock (that had to be close, not sure if he got it off…on review, nope).

Hart -- -- He didn’t play the first half, but came in the third. The game changed with him out there. The team D picked up. We didn’t have him as a point of attack defender on the perimeter, which is his weakness. The Lakers went small to close this game with LeBron and Kuzma at the C spots. Hart in there battling with bigs. That allowed for better switching, faster rotations and they got the stops. The end result was the team high +22 in 19 second half minutes. The D just tightened up and the Lakers turned the game around. “I might be the first one to have a postgame interview scoring 4 points,” Hart said afterward. Scrappy plays, tapping out a big offensive board, bodying up and opportunistic scoring. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 19 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Not close on a corner three on a swing pass. He tapped out an offensive board from behind a man and it went to Kuzma for a three. Nice cut off Rondo’s drive and he took it for a layup.

Chandler -- -- Short stint tonight as Luke shuffled through his options before setting on the small ball in the second half. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board and 1 turnover in 6 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He threw a kickout away. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Stephenson -- -- With Bullock now in the mix and Hart apparently good to go, do we really need to give Lance significant run right now? He was a -6 in 6 minutes in the first half, while Bullock was a team-high +8 in his 14 first half minutes. Luke decided not to bring Lance back in the second half to reduce the damage. We’ve been searching for our “defensive mojo” as Luke called it. I think it’s likely going to be found with no Lance in the mix and limiting Rondo, if we can help it. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board in 6 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He shoved a screener to give up FTs. He airballed an open corner three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Lakers up 3 when KCP and Rondo came in for Ingram and Bullock midway through the quarter… McGee out for Chandler up 1… Harden picked up his third foul in the first quarter (thanks, Scott Foster)… Stephenson in for LeBron, BI in for Kuzma, Lakers down 5 with 2 minutes left… A 12-3 run for the Rockets. Lakers offense looking inept trying to continually setup KCP, who’s ice cold. With Harden on the bench for half the quarter, the Lakers lost ground… The Rockets led 32-22 after the first quarter… He started a LeBron, Ingram, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo lineup against the Rockets big lineup… Down 8 when Harden returned with 9 minutes left… Timeout down 11 a minute later… He brought back in the starters with Rondo instead of LeBron… LeBron in for Rondo down 10… Timeout down 13… They cut it to 4 on a 9-0 run… The Lakers trailed 58-52 at the half. The Lakers shot 5-19 from three, the Rockets were 6-19… They quickly fell back by 13 and Luke called a timeout. All that chipping away to end the first half, and they quickly lost it out of the gates… Lakers fading, losing the first 5 minutes of the third quarter… Hart in with 6:33 left for McGee… KCP in for Bullock, down 16… Lakers getting more feisty on D in this stretch and forced a timeout after a 6-0 run… Bullock back in for Ingram to go with LeBron, Kuzma, Hart and KCP… They cut it to 8 getting out in transition and forced a timeout… The Lakers trailed 90-83 heading into the fourth… He started a Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, KCP, Rondo uber-small lineup… They cut it to 4 before LeBron came back in after 3 minutes for Kuzma… Lakers going to the break with what looked like a 1-point lead, but LeBron had a foot on the three line and KCP didn’t get a three off before the shotclock, so they trailed by 3 instead… They tied it up for real off an Ingram drive a few minutes later… LeBron, Kuzma, Hart, Bullock, Ingram lineup… Harden fouled out with 1:31 left off charges taken by Kuzma and LeBron. Lakers up 6… LeBron missed a wing jumper on iso that could have been an 8-point lead and the Rockets score to cut it to 4 with 55 seconds left. Timeout, Luke… Wow, Rockets down 4 with 33 seconds left and they get two techs (CP3 and D’Antoni). Bullock makes both, Ingram makes his two FTs. Backbreakers… He dialed it in tonight, finding a defensive lineup and the Lakers closed strong in the last 18 minutes or so…

Thanks DB! Excellent write up as always. Very encouraging seeing BI rebound and attack the rim, and HIT FREE THROWS, seeing Hart have a positive impact on the team again, seeing Kuzma scrap on defense and play more complete games, and seeing Bullock play solid D and nail 3's.

Good start Lakers - real good win!

Thanks DB!

Great game by BI. Loved his effort overall, especially on the glass and hitting those FTs.

Bullock is looking to be a welcome addition to this team.

Hart appears to be returning to his scrappy form.

I feel we can get back to how we were rolling at the beginning of the season.

That contest had a distinguishing aspect to it within Laker history. I think the starting lineup of Bullock, James, Kuzma, Ingram and McGee might have been the tallest Laker unit to ever start a game for the franchise. No one under 6'7".

Not a traditional lead guard or point guard among 'em either.

Hart IMO was the MVP of the game. Defense and energy was lacking until he got in the game. First time this year I can remember a small ball lineup working so well.

I can't remember the exact play but Kuzma did something stupid in the fourth and Luke pulled him for about 4 minutes. I liked Luke holding players accountable for messing up by pulling them / limiting their minutes. He needs to more of this especially with Lance but Kuzma and Ingram also. Yes they are good young players but they need to understand they have to be held to a higher standard.

Ron Harper
Kobe Bryant

Shaq

Close, I guess could go either way, Bullock taller than Kobe or Harper?

Or

Magic
