No Sense of Urgency… It’s usually a bad sign for the Lakers if they are scoring exceptionally well early…and trailing.

The Lakers gave the Pelicans their highest scoring quarter of the year to start the game, giving up 42 to trail by 7 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the three shooting went 0-8 as the Lakers offense sputtered. That allowed the Pelicans to take a double-digit lead and hold on to it from three.

The team played flat, with no sense of urgency. The Laker bench, especially, looked like they were sleep walking. You can’t do that and make the playoffs.

The Lakers finished with 23 turnovers, one short of their season-high, as they fell 128-115.

“They scored 42 in the first quarter and didn’t really feel us defensively at all,” Luke said.

“That urgency has to be there,” LeBron said about the start of the game and the third quarter. It wasn’t there at the end of quarters, in between quarters, or at any point tonight.

LeBron -- -- “I’ll never get comfortable with losing,” LeBron said afterward. Some early post work in this game, just muscling his way around defenders for easy scores. His perimeter shot was garbage in the first half, airballing a couple times and even missing both FTs he took. In the third quarter, however, the three shooting came alive as he sank three of those deep flat-footed threes. A bit turnover-prone in that first half, getting 3 of his 4, but he cleaned it up. He stepped on an ankle in transition in the fourth and the Lakers playoff chances suddenly flashed before everyone’s eyes, but he walked it off and was fine. (I think his leg strength probably saved him right there). He moved into the top 10 all time for assists tonight as he led the team with 12. “Hopefully, we can get Zo back soon,” LeBron said. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 11-17 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 12 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and no fouls. He was a -10. The Action: He lobbed to McGee off the jumpball for a dunk to start. He found BI cutting for a layup. He found Bullock for the wing three. He posted up his man and muscled in a layup. He posted up, backed his man down, hung and scored the short one. He hit McGee rolling for a dunk. Back in the post, he ball faked, spun and reversed easily. He airballed a baseline fade. He spun, took contact and powered in a twisting layup. He took a pass trailing the break, spun and scored the layup around the defender. He missed a long three. Sweet bounce pass to a cutting Hart for the layup. He attacked in transition and scored the lefty layup. He tried to thread a pass behind a defender and it was picked off. He cut down the paint and Rondo lobbed to him for the dunk. He airballed a wing three, not squaring up. He had the ball stripped from him on the perimeter. He iso’d on Randle to draw FTs, he missed both. Second Half: After one-handing a rebound, he hit Ingram leaking out for FTs. Pocket pass to McGee for the dunk. He stole the ball in the back court. He sank a deep three. He hit another deep three. He drew FTs. No box out and he gave up a board. He drained a deep set-shot three again. He rejected Randle’s drive. He missed a wing three. He missed a tough fade. Pocket pass to Kuzma cutting for the dunk. He attacked and muscled his way to FT, he made one. He attacked to his left and finished the hanging layup with his right. He jump passed to Ingram under the hoop after drawing a double. He fired a pass across court to Bullock for a corner three.

Kuzma -- -- He had 12 points on 5-9 shooting, 6 boards and 5 assists in a well-rounded first half. Tough cover, however, for him going against Randle with his size. Lakers need more length on Randle, perhaps go with McGee while LeBron covers the C or switching LeBron on him if he’s up for it. After that first half, Kuz was a bit quieter. Still, I like seeing the all-around numbers edging up. He had the 7 assists with some excellent ball movement, often after breaking down the D. That’s a new career high. Knock down 1 or 2 more threes and you couldn’t ask for much more offensively. He also chipped in on the glass. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 7 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Jump pass to McGee for a dunk when two defenders ran to him. He swished a wing three on a cross-court feed from BI. He was blocked at the rim on a layup. His lob pass was picked off. He scored a layup off the bounce pass from Rondo. Great defensive board on one end, then he found Rondo for an open three on the other. He threw down a dunk off the give and go with Rondo. He missed a pull-up three next time down. Short on a wing three. He tipped in a miss at the front of the rim. He swished a wing jumper. He missed a three, but hustled for his miss and was fouled. Nice up-and-under to draw FTs on iso, he made one. Second Half: he missed an 18-footer. He smothered his man and forced a bad pass to ignite a break. Too far on a long pass to Kuzma, turnover. He couldn’t finish a drive. He hit a tricky jumphook when Lance dumped the ball off to him. He attacked and gave it to Lance cutting for a layup. He cut and LeBron found him with the pocket pass for the dunk. He missed a forced corner three, wondering about a whistle that didn’t come. He swung it to BI in the corner for a three.

Ingram -- -- He scored 29 points in 26 minutes. His really getting out of that settling for midrange and looking to attack and this game…hit threes. Early foul trouble had him sitting most of the first half. He picked up his third foul to start the second quarter, playing angry after a no call and then charging. The Lakers really missed his defense on the floor in that first half. This is what he looks like if he adds a more consistent three ball to his game (which should come). Those added points from beyond the arc combined with drawing FTs on his drives makes for an efficient 29 on 18 attempts. Obviously, the turnovers (5) were an issue. You know ever score and make against the Pelicans is probably being watched in case they do revisit that trade at some point. “I could have been way better on the defensive end especially,” BI said. He didn’t like his rotations and help side coverage or how well he challenged shots. I like the self critique. We need more guys doing that. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 10-18 shooting (3-4 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 5 turnovers and 5 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Clock low, he attacked left with power and scored the lefty And-1 layup, he made the FT. He cut off LeBron’s post, took the pass and scored the layup. He found Kuzma cross court for a three. He was fouled on the long pass from LeBron in transition for FTs, he made one. He took contact in transition and was irked as he missed. He was angry on the next play and iso’d to get called for the charge, his third foul and he sat again. Second Half: He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He turned it over on a push out. He missed a baseline jumper. He hit a tough runner on the break. He then hit a three when LeBron stole the ball in the back court. He was blocked on a dunk off the UCLA cut (slow on the rise because he jumped off two feet). He up-faked and forced a long miss trying to draw contact. He attacked, faked and scored a layup. He was ejected at the rim again. Fouled on the perimeter for more FTs, he made one. He missed a short one and then a putback at the rim. Out on the break, he hit a falling down And-1 after initiating contact nicely, he made the FT. He hit Lance curling for a layup. He iso’d, blew past his man and then flipped in the And-1 high over the closing help defender, he missed the FT. Picked on a drive, score the other way. He cut from the corner and LeBron found him for a layup. He sank a corner three off a ball reversal. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a three at the buzzer.

Bullock -- -- He played 30 minutes and was a +4. So the 18 minutes he was off the court, the Lakers were a -17. Even if he’s not hitting, I think you still need him on the floor. Otherwise, you are giving minutes to the guys who should be deep bench. He sank a couple threes tonight, but was fairly quiet out there. He didn’t like the team’s sense of urgency. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-6 shooting (2-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He popped out behind a screen and hit the wing three. He found Kuzma for the wing jumper. He couldn’t finish a layup off a cut. He missed a quick-fire corner three. Second Half: He fumbled a dribble out of bounds. He missed an open wing three. He missed a 12-footer curling into the paint to take a pass. Out of control on the break but he got bailed out for FTs, he made one. He drew FTs trying to cut to the corner for a three off a set play, he made both. He sank a corner three on the cross-court feed.

McGee -- -- He was set up for dunks for all his scores, including one off the set play off the jumpball. Not a lot of deterrence in the paint from him tonight. He also got beat down court for a dunk (and didn’t even try running back on D on one play). The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He dunked off the jumpball on our set lob play, screen assist by Bullock. He dunked off the extra pass from Kuzma in the corner. He dunked off the screen-roll with LeBron. Second Half: Illegal screen, turnover. He drew FTs on an interior feed from LeBron, he made both. He dunked off the pocket pass from LeBron. He got the ball trailing the break and turned it over.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had the team-low -13. I would have benched him tonight after an awful, turnaround, one-footed fade in early offense. What are you thinking? When we don’t value possessions like that it plays into every problem we have with struggling to be at “playoff mode” right now. The bench in general was just not there. I don’t think any of the Pelicans guards felt the Lakers on D. If he’s not hitting threes right now, he’s not bringing much. Remember last year when he was getting boards and hustling? No boards tonight. He also managed 2 turnovers in his limited minutes. We brought back KCP or Rondo here instead of Jules. Sigh. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: Bad idea on a bounce pass in the paint, easily picked off. He was hit on a quick-fire three for FTs, he made all three. Bad chuck from the wing and he missed. He sank a pull-up at the FT line. Ridiculous, turnaround one-footed fade in early offense (should be benched for that one) and wasn’t close. He was hit on a layup attempt with no call and missed. All alone in transition and we found him for a layup. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. He kicked out into the backcourt for a turnover.

Rondo -- -- He and LeBron had 5 of the Lakers 12 first half turnovers (the two would finish with 8 turnovers combined). You can’t have that from your vets. Pretty much a garbage game from Rondo. I don’t think we should be playing him big minutes and he went 29 tonight. James Worthy wants him to start and run the pick and roll. Yikes. He’s just not a defender. And, there’s really no reason for him and LeBron to share the court at the same time. You’re just asking for trouble defensively. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He hit Kuzma rolling for the layup. He sank an open three when Kuzma found him open next time down. Ill-advised bounce pass cross-court in the half court set and it was picked off, but he stole it back in transition. Then he missed a three shortly later in transition. He hit a tricky reverse over his head after getting around Randle (not an easy make with how far away he was). Not covering anyone, we gave up a three. He lobbed to a cutting LeBron for the throwdown. He threw a bounce pass away. Second Half: He missed an open sideline three. He probed and threw it away for a layup the other way (made up his mind to pass, I think, a layup chance was there). He stole the ball, then coughed it back up on the pushout. He ball faked and sank a foot-on-the-three line jumper.

Hart -- -- Pretty much a non-factor offensively as that three shot still looks MIA. Defensively, we had him battling on the perimeter a little more than the last one, but he also mixed it up with Julius at times. Felt like he was out of position a bit, as well. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He gave up putback score. He missed a wide open corner three. He blocked a man from behind to prevent a layup. He cut and LeBron threaded a bounce pass to him for a layup. He missed a good look at a wing three. Second Half: He fouled a three shooter just after coming in, way to let everyone know you’re on the court. He attacked, spun and blew the layup.

Chandler -- -- Just 5 minutes. Our D at the C spot has fallen off quite a bit with the loss of Zu. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot, had 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 5 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He stripped his man on the perimeter. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Stephenson -- -- He was a -11 in his 4 first half minutes. We’re just rotating too many guys in. Even with Ingram in foul trouble, half of Stephenson’s minutes still should have gone to Bullock. Playing him over Svi, I understand, but there’s really no reason to play him most nights right now. Wish Luke would tighten the rotation. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a tough wing three with the shotclock low. Second Half: He curled into the paint and Ingram fired it to him for a layup. Nice cut off Kuzma’s drive to take a pass and finish at the rim. He was called for a charge on a drive, looked kind of weak, then he picked up a tech.

Wagner -- -- Lakers really missed someone who can come in off the bench and lift the team’s energy. I think Luke brought him in more to deal with Randle, but maybe also to see if he could spark them with his energy. He’s not quite ready for making that kind of impact, but that’s what you hope in the future. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He slipped a screen, took the pass and scored a layup. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. His offensive board led to a LeBron three. He up-faked, attacked, stumbled on the Euro but scored. He had defensive board stolen for a score. He missed a sideline three (looked fouled).

Caruso -- -- He came in with a minute and a half left for garbage time. The Stats: He had no stats in 2 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The team came out flat. No sense of urgency, especially from the bench… Rondo in for BI who picked up a couple fouls after 5 minutes, Lakers up 1…. Chandler in for McGee, KCP in for LeBron with 5:49 left, Lakers up 1. Lakers really doing a poor job defending the paint… Stephenson in for Bullock with 4 minutes left, Lakers up 4… That lead was erased when the timeout came a minute later… Hart in for Kuzma, score tied… LeBron in for Chandler, Lakers down 2 with a minute left… Awful close. Lakers trailed 42-35 after the first… He started a LeBron, Hart, Ingram, KCP, Rondo lineup… Ingram quickly picked up his third foul and had to sit. Lakers need his D… Why is Bullock not in for him?... Bullock finally in down 10 for KCP… They trimmed the lead down to 4 off some poor shot selection by the Pelicans and forced a timeout… Timeout again as the Lakers trailed by 8, giving up some open threes… Moe in for Kuzma who couldn’t defend Randle, Lakers down 11. They gave up a 12-3 run to close the quarter… The Lakers trailed 69-57 at the half. The Lakers had 12 turnovers…Three turnovers in the Lakers first four possessions of the half… Hart in for Bullock… Moe in at the C for McGee, Lakers down 13… Ingram out for KCP… They cut it to 10 and forced a timeout… They trailed 100-84 heading into the fourth… McGee, Hart, Ingram, Stephenson, Rondo… McGee and Stephenson no effort to get back in transition and Luke called a timeout after a score, Lakers down 17… BI and McGee out for LBJ and Kuzma out of that timeout down 17… Down 16, he went with a LeBron, Kuzma, Ingram, Bullock, Rondo, lineup… Hart in for Kuzma… Laker just never punched back…

Zu would have been so (bleep) helpful this game...god (bleep) damnit.

One thing that has been pissing me off recently is LeBron's body language after a Lakers mistake or the opposition scores. There's nothing worse than playing with a guy whose constantly doing that (bleep) and on top of that not running back (granted he's trying to pace himself, but still).

Thanks DB. I had to turn the game off so I didn't get too emotional.

Will be an interesting off season, that's for sure!

Thanks DB. Disappointing game all the way around. I think it was a little disingenuous of Lebron to basically call out only the Lakers who have never been to the playoffs yet. If vets like Lebron and Rondo have no inclination to play defense than what do you expect?

Thanks, DB.

LP didn't seem to work properly (choppy feed, buffering all the time) so I watched a portion of the 1st half oly and then skipped forward. Didn't miss much apparently. What a disgraceful loss.

Thanks DB

This game makes me mad all over about trading Zu and I think it cost us 2 games so far.

Seeing Randle makes me mad all over again. Guy is 20/9 and hitting 35% from 3 point range. He would have made things a lot easier for LeBron.

I hate to say it but Magic/Rob did great clearing space for LeBron but their other moves have been crap in an some ways just stupid.

It seen like BI and Kuz missed many more shots than what the stat sheet showed

The talented kids are comfortable in just giving a good effort and comfortable in losing.

The guys who have been miserable have been the vet role players on the team. I include KCP in that but I suppose LeBron might think of him as one of the young guys. I kind of think LBJ was just opening his mouth to sound smart about something in that exchange and just ended up in a place that didn’t have a lot or relevance for the game.

Missed Zu big time. Randle and Diallo played bully ball and combined for 42 points, 13 boards, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Zu was the only guy on the team with enough physical stature (read size and bulk) to hold those two down.

These guys don't put forth anywhere near the effort defensively that is required to win consistently.

The problem is not "shooters" or "offensive scheme" or any of that.

It is the blatant lack of defensive effort. Embarrassing and unacceptable.

Entirely accurate. The real problem for me is that this starts with the same guy that seems to think he should be calling out everyone for their lack of defensive effort.

Agreed.

A season best 42 first quarter points given up against a team missing two of its best players. I don't even...

Sad that our D was dependent on a budding NBA rotation player who was the third string center.

Wasn’t JaVale and Tyson brought in for their D and “veteranism” (thank you Robert Horry!)

When JaVale gets beaten down the court, something that JaVale used to do against other centers, one wonders if they are healthy or uninterested

The most important issue is that our overall D has disappeared, with the 5 being the last line of defense

For the Luke Haters, one cannot coach energy.
