Mental Breakdown… There was a lot to like about this game. The Lakers had a 12-point lead at one point. They saw Brandon Ingram go 9-9 to start the game, including a couple of dunks that had the crowd buzzing. They were competing against the team with the league’s best record.

Then came the close. The Lakers were up 118-116 and then went turnover prone in the last couple of minutes.

The back breaker came after a timeout when KCP threw a backcourt inbounds pass up for grabs to LeBron between two defenders. The Bucks stole the ball easily and then hit a three. Instead of the Lakers going down court to try to tie the game, they suddenly trailed by 6.

That deflated the team. The 4 turnovers in the last two minutes ended up allowing the Bucks to go on a 15-2 run to close the game. The final score of 131-120 was not indicative of how this game was played.

LeBron -- -- Good spring in his step in this game. He had a few dunks, including a sweet reverse putback jam to clean up some missed dribble penetration. He was sinking threes, hitting from the line and setting up teammates. He had 10 points, 5 boards and 7 assists in the first half, a triple-double pace but he wouldn’t get the boards in the second half. I would have liked to see him move more on that inbounds pass that was picked off, but KCP had no business throwing it to begin with. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 10-19 shooting (3-8 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He drained a three on a kickout to start the game. He poked away Lopez’s post-up to get a stop. He knocked another one away from Lopez. He missed an open three. He threw a kickout away. He missed a deep three. He slammed off the bounce pass between defenders from BI. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He attacked and kicked to Muscala for a three. Bad read trying to hit Ingram cutting into a crowd instead of the open man on the wing, turnover. He missed a layup getting downhill with speed (should have had that one). He fed Kuzma on the break for an And-1 layup. Bounce pass to Kuzma off the two-man sequence for a layup. He missed a wing three. He found Kuzma curling for a runner at the front of the rim. He threw down a putback reverse jam off Kuzma’s miss. He crossed over and hit the pull-up 16-footer. He worked his way into the paint and kicked to Reggie for three. Second Half: He sized up Lopez, got downhill on him and scored the And-1 lefty layup, he made the FT. He was stripped on a drive, got it back, pumped a couple times and drew FTs trying to power up, he made both. He attacked Giannis again and drew more FTs, he made one. He was fouled trying to post up, he made both FTs. He ball-faked baseline, spun middle and scored the layup. He kicked to Hart for a three. He missed a baseline turnaround. He drained a three trailing the break. He hit Rondo for the wing three. He iso’d, attacked, took all kinds of contact with no call and missed. He attacked off a screen next time down and jammed an And-1 down, he made the FT. He swished the wide open off the off the kickout and swing sequence. He was called for a charge trying to power up, throwing a wing out. He missed a wing three. He missed a three on an inbounds. He attacked, spun and scored a layup.

Ingram -- -- Just loving watching him play right now. The Laker playoff hopes may be dwindling by the game, but BI has elevated his play and it’s fun to see. Strong first quarter, going 6-6, including a reverse jam off a spin move that had the crowd buzzing. At the half he was 8-8 for 16 points. He wasn’t getting to the rim consistently in the half to his damage, but working more from the midrange game. (I think he’s added a little bit of a fade to allow him to measure and hit on those the past few weeks. The release is just a little more controlled and better paced.) He’d go 9-9 before missing his first shot as his corner three rattled out. Then came the facial over Lopez in the second half will make the NBA highlight reel. He attacked the rim hard with a head of steam and hammered over Lopez, taking contact, but throwing it down with force. Big time finish and he’s looking more and more comfortable on the floor. He’d finish with his fourth 30+ point game. The small ball lineups that pull bigs out on the perimeter and provide a little more daylight should help BI’s numbers go up. Very curious to see how good he becomes when he adds more and more strength to his game. “It’s been for me to get out on the floor and just be aggressive,” he said, mentioning it reminds him of growing up and just playing ball. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 13-21 shooting (1-4 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He hit a turnaround from the midpost. He attacked across the lane and sank the short fade. He sank a pull-up 15-footer on the break. Pretty bounce pass by the ankles of the defender to LeBron trailing for the slam. He iso’d, got his man going backward and he sank the pull-up wing jumper. He crossed over his man on iso and scored the layup. He fed LeBron cutting for FTs. He crossed over and spun at the wing, got a step on his man and reverse dunked over the help D. He attacked right, spun back middle and swished a fade in the paint. He sank a turnaround just inside the elbow. Nice crack back board to take it away from a Buck. Second Half: He swished a step-back in the paint and the bench wanted the foul, too. He got tapped on a corner three. He was blocked on a step-through scoop (should have shot the leaner). He blew past Middleton and scored the And-1 reverse, he missed the FT. Damn, BI, he hammered over Brook in transition (that forced a timeout and got Staples on their feet…should have been an And-1). He attacked from the wing with speed and hit the pull-up with the D backing up. He missed a pumping elbow fade. Quick first step and he couldn’t finish at the rim. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He drained a three straight away, just beating the shotclock. He missed a corner three at the buzzer. He rejected his man on a drive. He attacked the paint on the other end, hung and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed a pull-up at the FT line with a minute left. He missed a long wing pull-up.

Kuzma -- -- So after they tried to hide Lopez on Rondo in the first, they then went to try that on Kuzma who wasn’t shooting well (he finished 1-6 from three). Kuzma struggled to connect from the perimeter and struggled to finish around Giannis at times. Despite the difficulties offensively, he battled on D. He stayed in front of reasonably Giannis well and teammates helped him wall him off. “Just tried to take that challenge on,” Kuzma said. Unfortunately, he scored just 12 points on 18 attempts. That certainly hurt. “We just had a couple of errors,” Kuzma said, happy with the team’s intensity. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-18 shooting (1-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a tough floater in transition. Offensive interference in transition. He stepped in to a take a charge on Giannis. He missed a wide open three. He was blocked trying to create against Giannis. He attacked a crowd and missed a layup. He pulled down an offensive board and hit Hart cutting for a layup. He scored an And-1 layup on the break, he made the FT. He missed a three, straight away. He was blocked in transition attacking a crowd. He short armed a shot in the middle of the paint. He scored a layup off the pocket pass from LeBron. He curled into the paint and hit the runner. He attacked and missed, but LeBron trailed to clean up the dribble penetration with a putback dunk. He attacked, spun, his man flopped and Kuzma hit the open floater. He missed an open wing three on a pick and pop. Second Half: He swished a three over Lopez. He missed a three next time down as Lopez gave him space. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break. He attacked and was stripped. He got tapped on a three in transition.

Bullock -- -- He struggled a bit to keep Bledsoe in front of him. Just too speedy for him tonight. Offensively, not a lot of action, but he sank one three on a kickout and scored a layup off a cut for his other points. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 boards and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a corner three on a kickout. Backdoor cut and Muscala hit him for the layup. He sank a wing three off a kickout from LeBron. Second Half: He missed a three on the catch-and-shoot straight away. He missed an 18-footer off the handoff.

Rondo -- -- He had Lopez on him defensively to start the game. This left him absolutely wide open from three. We kept going to him and he missed five in a row before making his sixth. He’d then miss his seventh of the first quarter. The crowd was pulling for him on every one of those. He was 3-10 from three in the first half, crazy numbers for him. He’d eventually finish 4-12 from three, a reasonable amount and he only passed on a couple of those. He’d nearly finish with a triple-double. He and LeBron had a couple of miscues down the stretch that caused turnovers. Just not quite on the same page. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-19 shooting (4-12 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 9 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: Kickout to LeBron for a three. He missed an open three. He missed a layup in transition. Offensive board and he missed an open three. He missed another wide open three. He missed another wide open three. He missed another wide open three. Finally he made his first three in six attempts. He missed a corner three (this one he should have driven past Lopez who closed). He missed an open elbow jumper. He missed another wide open three. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He hit KCP in the corner for a three. He drained a wide open wing three. He setup McGee for a dunk on the two-man game. He attacked and scored a layup over Lopez. He missed a layup in transition. He couldn’t finish a lefty layup. Second Half: He fed Ingram on the break for the massive dunk over Lopez. Bad kickout into the crowd not wanting to finish on a cut. He missed a scoop. He missed an open three. He sank an open jumper from the top of the key. He pushed it up and hit LeBron for the three. He gave it up, got it back, launched from three, holding the pose and it swished. He faked the behind-the-back pass and scooped in a layup. He attacked in transition to draw FTs, he made both. He threw a bounce pass out of bounds.

McGee -- -- He was out of the rotation until a minute or so into the second and fourth quarters. A different mix for the Lakers with Muscala getting some minutes to try to space the floor. Quality minutes for McGee. He had one little flurry of scores in the first half and the Lakers played well with him on the floor. He had a rejection of Giannis at the rim, but there were a couple of other plays I would have liked to see him challenge when he didn’t. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He denied Giannis’s throwdown attempt on help D. He hit a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He took a bounce pass and dunked over Lopez. He attacked Lopez and hit the running hook. Second Half: He missed a throwdown.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Are you kidding me? What the hell was that with the inbound passes tonight. It’s rare you see passes get picked off from the baseline inbounds off a made basket, but KCP had two of them tonight. One in the first half that led right to a layup and then the back breaker in the fourth. He had LeBron double covered on the inbounds and yet he still tried to force it to him instead of taking the timeout. Even if you have to force it, BI in the corner at least had just one man on him. Just some dense basketball that cost them big time. He let his team down with those and knew it afterward. He also managed to lead the team with the -22. Come on, KCP. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He sank a corner three in transition. Bad inbounds to give up a layup. Second Half: He sank a jumper coming around a screen. He stole the ball at midcourt. He sank a falling down catch-and-shoot off the inbounds. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line, kicked out and it eventually led to a wide open three for LeBron. He drew a charge having to D up Giannis. Horrible inbounds out of a timeout and it led to a Bucks three in crunch time (1:48 left to trail by 6 instead of trying to tie it up on the other end).

Hart -- -- He was a little relieved when his first three in forever finally went down. He held up both hands as he headed back down court. He hadn’t hit a threes since January. Sure felt like it, too. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from the three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He sagged off his man and gave up a three. He missed a three, but cut to the hoop and Kuzma found him for the layup. Second Half: He blocked his man from behind to prevent a dunk. He finally sank a wing three on a kickout from LeBron.

Muscala -- -- He had a couple of nice plays in this one. The best was coming from behind to reject Giannis and help out a teammate. He’d sink a three on a kickout from LBJ. In theory, that’s why the Lakers made the trade was to see what some of the guys look like with a floor spacing big of sorts out there (Lopez would go 3-6 from three). The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He spotted Bullock open on a cut for a layup. He drained the open three on the kickout from LeBron. He swatted Giannis badly at the rim. Second Half: He missed a wing three, knocked down with no call.

Walton -- -- Really tough to stick it out with Rondo early on when the Bucks left him wide open to plug the paint with Lopez. With LeBron out there, you don’t really need Rondo. You could move a shooter off the bench to make the Bucks pay. Luke stuck it out, though, and eventually Rondo started to make them pay. But not after an 0-5 start from three. Not sure I would have had the patience for that… As a result, the offense started flat. Luke finally called a timeout after only 10 points in 7 minutes, trailing by 5 (Rondo 1-7 on wide open threes in those first 5 minutes)… Muscala and Hart in for Rondo and Kuzma… Ingram feasting in the quarter (6-6 shooting)… The Lakers trailed 27-26 after the first quarter… Muscala, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup to start the second… McGee in for Hart, Lakers down 7… Rondo hit a couple of threes and the Lakers forced a timeout after tying the game up 37-37… McGee, BI, Bullock, KCP, Rondo lineup now… All starters back in after giving up a couple easy scores at the rim… The Lakers led 65-59 at the half. BI going 8-8 in the half. Lakers were 7-22 from three (Rondo 3-10)… BI forced the Bucks into a timeout on a massive throwdown over Lopez on the break, Lakers up 7… A 12-point Laker lead in the third was trimmed to 8 and Luke called a timeout after giving up a couple layups. Good timeout… KCP in for Bullock, Muscala for Kuzma, Lakers up 9 still… Another timeout, Lakers down 1 (Giannis out during this stretch but the Lakers coughed up the lead)… Hart in to go with Muscala, LeBron, BI and KCP… The Lakers led 94-93 heading into the fourth… He started a Muscala, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup… They quickly trailed by 4… McGee in for Muscala down 4… Down 4 when LeBron came in for Kuzma with 8:25 left… They tied it up off Rondo/LeBron threes and forced a timeout… McGee, LeBron, Ingram, KCP, Rondo out of that… Lakers up 2 with Kuzma returning for McGee… Timeout, Lakers down 3 and the ball was stolen off the inbounds. Killer… Luke said that was on him. He took for granted that they’d get the inbounds pass in. But players need to be able to handle that or call a timeout. The reason they didn’t advance the ball was because Luke wanted LeBron to get downhill off that inbounds… That turnover-prone finish tarnished a good effort by the team…

Tough loss as they played well except for crunch time.

BI starting to to show more explosiveness in this game and he looks strong. Fun to watch him.

Thanks DB.

The low hanging fruit is obviously KCP, but I thought it was idiotic on Luke’s part to not play BI the whole 2nd half. He sat what, the first 5 of the 4th? He was on fire this game. He’s 21 he can handle it for crying out loud.

A great effort thrown down the toilet in the last couple of minutes. I don't see any moral victories in this one. Not with only 20 games left.

Thanks DB. Tough loss, given the effort put in to stay competitive with the top team in the league. Nice to see another great game from Ingram.

The ability to play your best when the best is needed

From having the chance to tie the game to being down 9 points in a heartbeat would be deflating for the vast majority of ballers not name Kobe or Jordan

KCP’s decision was to throw the ball to LeBron, who was double-team, and not to a player that was not guarded, since his defender was part of the double team on LeBron.

Could somebody share if KCP is a veteran or a rookie

It was a heck of an effort against a team that is clearly better/deeper. Luke has had some great game plans against the top teams in the league (Golden State, Houston, Boston, etc). Unfortunately, Bledsoe and a some very poorly timed mistakes cost us the game. But, it’s hard to be mad to be that close when everyone expected the Bucks to beat us easily.

If we could of put in an effort like that against the lesser teams we’d have a great record. I think we’re seeing B.I. turn into a star right in front of our eyes. Sometime has clicked with him for sure (finally).

If you guys take in KCP's body of work as a Laker, and just hearing him speak, he is not and has never been a high IQ player. I am never surprised when he makes really dumb turnovers.

Which beggars the mind at why Luke decided to have him inbound the ball.

Tough loss, but at least they play with purpose. Kuz is going to have up and down games, so not upset there.
The addition of Lonzo would have meant the subtraction of KCP, which would have lead to a Lakers win.
