Tank You Very Much… No Ingram tonight as he was ruled out with shoulder soreness. (Perhaps, the tank is actually in progress.) In any event, it presented one more challenge to overcome tonight against the Clippers.

The first quarter often has been sign of the defensive effort for the Lakers on a given night. The Lakers had a 34-26 advantage after the first 12 minutes, putting in a good effort out of the gates. But they resumed usual form, quickly giving up 35 points in the second quarter to trail at the half.

They went back and forth in the third quarter. Which is fine by the Clippers as their bench was just waiting to enter the game and pounce.

They did just that to start the fourth and the Lakers were down by 12 after just 2 minutes. Rondo, who had one of his stronger games of the season, helped the Lakers trim it in half off a couple of drives for scores and a pass to LeBron. But the Lakers couldn’t knock down shots down the stretch and the D was missing their best defenders.

“When we missed a lot of those wide open shots that just deflated some of the energy out of us,” Luke said as the Lakers fell 113-105.

LeBron -- -- Strong scoring first half with 17 points to with 3 assists (seemed like more). He was 40 points behind Jordan in the scoring column. Seems like he’ll get there in the next one. Big minutes for LeBron tonight with all the injuries, I guess. He looked like he tweaked his groin briefly, but maybe he was just hit in the groin because he came back looking normal the rest of the game. “I got hit in the family jewels,” he confirmed afterward. He said he hasn’t been in a season where he’s seen that many injuries to one of his teams. Welcome to the Lakers of late. “You keep playing to the end and see what happens,” he said of the playoffs. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 9-18 shooting (1-6 from three, 8-12 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked in transition, spun and scored a layup with ease. He was blocked from behind on a double team, looked hit in the head. He attacked with speed and bricked the lefty finish. He posted up and drew FTs, he made one. He got past his man with a quick first step but looked blocked from behind, got the call, and he made both FTs. He spun to lose a man but couldn’t reverse. He won a jumpball against a big. He threaded the needle to Hart for a layup. He missed a wing three. He gave up a straight-line drive for a layup. He backdoored the overplay and dunked when Rondo found him. He attacked and scored an And-1 layup. He sank a wing three. He attacked and scored a lefty layup. He let the ball roll all the way up court, picked it up and missed the three trying to create a two-for-one. He attacked, spun and caught a defender with an elbow for an offensive foul. Second Half: He attacked Zubac from the wing and hit the And-1 runner off glass, he made the FT. He hit McGee rolling for the And-1. He sagged off his man and gave up an open three. He stepped and took a charge on a good rotation. He missed a wing three. He got tapped on a wing three. He threw a pass away, score on the other end (had he or anyone else hustled back, they could have got the miss after Hart challenged). He muscled in an And-1 when Rondo found him in the paint, he missed the FT. He pushed out and drew FTs, he made one. He blocked a drive. He missed an easy layup trying to avoid a charge (should have had it). He spun baseline and scored a layup. Attacked right and scored the And-1 layup, he missed another FT.

Kuzma -- -- When BI was out previously, he seemed to step it up a bit. There will certainly be more shots available. Fortunately, we ran McGee back at the C spot for him so he wouldn’t have to do as much heavy lifting and when we went small, either Hart or LeBron tended to take the bigger players. He twisted an ankle in the fourth quarter after taking a pass off the UCLA cut play and went down and headed into the locker room. He had 11 points on 4-9 shooting in the first half, but was quiet in the second half. Funny defensive stand in the second half, shoving LeBron to get over to the sideline and challenge a shooter when he and Kuz got tangled up. LeBron didn’t seem to mind (and he should actually appreciate Kuzma’s willingness to hold LBJ accountable on that end of the floor). I would think the tank would be in play by now for the team and they let Kuzma heal up. Right? “We’re hoping Ingram will be ready by Wednesday,” Luke said. He added he’d be surprised if Kuzma would be able to go. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-15 shooting (1-5 form three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Good job changing ends, no one matched up and Rondo hit him for the dunk. He missed a pull-up 20-footer. He missed a three. He pushed out and was blocked on the Euro step. He missed a tough tip. He spun away from a double team and hit a jumphook. He swished a 15-footer curling off a screen to take the pass. He sank a three given space. Up fake, he attacked left and was fouled on the runner, he made both FTs. He missed a baseline fallaway. He dribbled a ball out of bounds. He threw a pass away. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swished a baseline one-hander. He missed a quick-fire wing three. He missed a quick-fire wing three again. He twisted an ankle off the UCLA cut and missed.

Rondo -- -- One of his better games of the season. Strong first half with 11 points (hitting his threes) to go with 6 boards and 6 assists on his way to a triple-double night. He had 3 fouls which sidelined him for Caruso later in the second quarter. But he kept aggressive offensively and ended up with the big night scoring. It makes a difference when he’s able to finish at the rim and hit an occasional three. If he’s not playing even average on D on most nights (like tonight some poor stands), he’s got to give a little more impact on offense to make him a positive, especially as a starter. You could almost imagine a scoring PG out there with LeBron tonight. Maybe that happens in the offseason. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-18 shooting (4-10 from three) to go with 10 boards, 12 assists, 1 steal, 5 turnover sand 5 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He lobbed to McGee on the first possession. He fouled a three shooter. Long bounce pass (put some steam on it) to Kuzma streaking down court for a dunk. Left open, he drained a three next time down. Bad pass, not high enough over the fronting D, turnover. He lobbed instead of trying to bounce pass and it was picked off. He drained a wing three when a man went under the screen. He attacked off the three line and missed the flip-in attempt. Bounce pass to LeBron backdooring his man for the dunk. He swished an open three off the two-man game. He sank a fading bank on the drive. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He rattled in a wing three given room. He attacked the pressure and scored a layup. He missed an open three at the top of the arc. He got a step around his man and flipped in a layup. Change of speed and he scored a layup off the brush screen. He missed an open wing three. He biffed a layup attacking off a screen. He found LeBron in the paint for an And-1. He attacked off the three line and scooped in a layup taking contact. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to hit LeBron (not close). He took an outlet, changed directions and scored the layup over his head. He missed an open wing three. He missed a wing three.

McGee -- -- He was getting outmuscled by Harrell and a little by Zubac at times. We sent in Hart to handle the post D for him. Gortat may be coming to steal his minutes soon. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-8 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Lob dunk on the first possession. He fumbled a pass, got it back and scored the layup. He ball faked, attacked and missed a layup. Offensive board and he reset the offense. He missed a turnaround in the post. He erased a drive with a rejection. He got outmuscled for a couple of scores. He gave up a dunk unable to hand Harrell. Out of a timeout, we went to McGee in the post for a turnaround fade, yikes. Second Half: Offensive board, he kicked it out, Kuzma missed and McGee missed a putback dunk. He missed a baseline hook. He scored an And-1 off the slow developing pick and roll, he made the FT.

Bullock -- -- He got the start with Ingram out. He was struggling with the shot tonight, however. Just missing just about everything. They don’t run enough plays for him when he’s got the stroke going. Of course, when he doesn’t have it, he’s getting plenty of looks. Obviously, he’s new but the Lakers playbook for catch and shoot guys is pretty limited to begin with. In any event, weak outing tonight. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (0-7 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He made a tech FT. He missed a three out of a timeout. He missed a quick-fire sideline three in transition. He drained a corner jumper off an inbounds. He threw a pass away. Nice rotation to reject Harrell in the paint. Second Half: Jab step, attack left, spin back right and he hit the short one in the middle of the paint. He ball-faked and missed a three. He missed a corner three. He took a kickout, took a few steps to try to get behind the three line and sank the corner two at the end of the third, unable to make it behind the line. He missed a wing three on iso. Wide open next time down and he still couldn’t knock down the three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Sporting some very bright pink shoes tonight. That was the only thing memorable. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He made a tech FT. He missed a 15-footer. He missed a three in early offense. Wild finish attempt trying to score over a big. Second Half: He missed a three off an offensive board tapped to him. He finally sank a three with the game all but over.

Hart -- -- Looking like the Josh Hart of old tonight. Very nice to see. He was showing the strong post D, doing a good job holding ground against Harrell, who was beasting McGee in the paint. He got a couple of stops on the match up in the first half and a couple more in the second half. His stroke from three looked a little better (less of a fling in my mind, anyway) and he drained a couple. Throw in some midrange and points at the rim and you have the good scoring night…finally. He broke a streak of 14 straight games unable to get into double digits. Would love to see a strong close like he had last season, but he probably needs rest to get right. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting (2-4 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 block and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He was blocked on a drive. He missed a corner three at the buzzer. He shed a man and LBJ found him for a layup. He attacked off the three line and missed a scoop around the help D. He sank a corner three. He hit a wing three (good looking release). Second Half: He forced Galinari into a travel in the post. He took a pass trailing the break and scored the off-balance, lefty And-1 layup, he made the FT. He hit a short pull-up in the paint. Another stop against Harrell in the post. He missed a three trailing the break. He attacked off the made basket and drew FTs on the other end, he made both.

Muscala -- -- The Zu vs. Muscala matchup was…well, neither player made an impact in this one. Muscala hit a three and sank a few FTs. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Left open, he missed a corner three. He cut off LeBron’s post, took the pass and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed an open three. He missed a tough lefty attempt looking for a foul. Second Half: He sank a wing three right after entering the game. He was bumped on the perimeter for FTs, he made one.

Wagner -- -- Nice to see Moe out there for a few minutes. This loss buried the Lakers further in the standings. With Kuzma’s ankle twist, perhaps we see more of him.. He missed a three and a tip. Not much else. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 offensive boards and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Nice hedge and it forced a turnover (on a bad call as the ball went off his foot). Offensive board after missing a tip attempt and he reset the offense. He ball-faked and bricked a three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caruso -- -- Some backup PG minutes as BI joined Lance on the sideline. That opened up possibility that Caruso would play. Not really anything to report. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 assist and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He gave up a layup on a switch. Loose ball foul on the offensive end to give up FTs with 27 seconds left. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Some very poor possessions out of timeouts tonight. There was a McGee iso on one. We ended up with Bullock iso’ing on another busted play. Crowd wasn’t happy when this was all but over with a minute or so left… With BI out, he slid Bullock back in the starting lineup… Muscala in after McGee picked up two quick fouls in 3 minutes… The Lakers were up 3 when Hart came in for LeBron… KCP in for Bullock, Lakers up 5 with 3:23 left… Moe in for Muscala, Lakers up 8… LeBron back in for Rondo with 1:40 left, Lakers up 6… The Lakers led 34-26 after the first quarter… Moe, Kuz, LBJ, Hart, KCP … Kuzma out 12 seconds later for Bullock… KCP out for Rondo, Lakers up 3 after 2 minutes… Timeout up by just 1… Kuzma back in out of that for Moe, McGee in for Hart… LeBron out Bullock, down 1… Lakers go small with LeBron, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Caruso… The Lakers trailed 61-57 at the half… Lakers down 5 when LeBron sat for Hart and McGee for Muscala midway through the third… Kuzma out for LeBron after taking a knee to the side… Down 5, Caruso in for Rondo… They trailed 91-85 heading into the fourth… He started a Muscala, Kuzma, LeBron, Hart, KCP lineup… Down 8, Muscala out for Rondo, Kuzma sliding to the C spot against Harrell, uhoh (they will switch Hart/LeBron onto him shortly)… Timeout down 12 a couple possessions later on a dunk and a layup for the Clippers… Rondo helped spark the Lakers with a couple scores and a pass to LeBron for another. Timeout Clippers, lead down to 6… That didn’t last long as the Lakers faded into the night… Some boo’s late in the game (might have been Lou’s…but they certainly weren’t Luuuuukes)…

Thank you DB. I respect your commitment to these write-ups even when I imagine you're upset by the product in the court.

I would have liked to see bonga out there in hopes of trying some length on their guards. I know he's raw but what do we have to lose at this point? This is the lowest we've ever been. Even the Chucky Atkins days hurt less.

DB,

You might as well shut it done and put the rest of the season on automatic TANK pilot!

This season is a rap. Hopefully the Lakers can manage a top 5 pick this year and it looks like a new coach next year.

It sure looked like Luke finally decided to try to keep the minutes where both Lebron and Ingram were off the floor at the same time to a minimum tonight. Too bad he decided to finally start doing so on a night where BI was a scratch.

The scouting report is out

Just keep moving and pushing the ball, you will get wide open shots

Maintain pressure on these players, they will best themselves - especially in the last part of games

Don’t have to worry about their outside shooting or sending them to the free throw line - they won’t make shots

One can crash the boards since they are not looking for fast break opportunities

Just run on this team, they don’t have any heart to play hard

This is an easy game for every NBA team to win because they are satisfied with just giving a good effort.

Maybe the crowd should shout “Z I O N” - definitely Snoop Dog will be leading the cheers

I surrender. Today I went to Tankathon for the first time this season, gave it 5 spins and no, didn't get a better position in the lottery. We're #13 but only .5 game behind #10.

I did my first spins this morning.
Only took 5 to get to #4.
Only took 7 to get to #2

Lakers have a realistic shot at #9 as is. If they shut down Lebron, don't play Zo and rest Ingram with any issues whatsoever ... they can catch Washington who has won three in a row and are at 7 where the odds get substantially better for a top pick.

At this point the we will stink so bad no FA will come is a risk we have to take. I don't think this draft is that strong but we need as many assets as possible.

I had a feeling we were in for another long night after Rondo picked up right where he left off - jacking up threes like he is the second coming of Ray Allen. Another predictable, unimaginative offensive outing, paired with horrid defensive awareness by the majority of our players did the Lakers in again. I couldn't even watch the 4th quarter, just skipped through it.

We're all part of Snoop Dog's crew that feel this collection of players have already mailed in the season

Zubac's opinion on the difference between the two teams are revealing

Somebody should share to Rondo that there is a reason why you are wide open for 3point shots - you can't make them consistently
