Did the Lakers Punt Too Soon on Julius Randle, D'Angelo Russell and Others?

People forget about how durable Jules is. Aside from missing his first season, he's been pretty robust this year. Yes, his defense has slid this year, but surprisingly, he shoots 3s at a better % and rate than BI (35% on 2.5 attempts).

We had injuries ravage our team and having Jules with a steady 20/10 level performance would have been a good fallback.

Julius is 67/67, dead last, in terms of DRPM amongst centers in the league. “Slid” doesn’t encompass how poor of a defender he is.

Why is he listed primarily as a center though? What was AD playing?

PF. I’m not denying that Randle is pretty nice offensively, but he is objectively one of the worst defenders in the NBA. Eyes confirm this. Our FO has made mistakes, not resigning Brook and trading Nance away were bad. Not committing long term to Randle made sense to me however. He isn’t that good overall.

I'm not sure I would have gone long term as I'm speaking specifically about this year, but I would rather have had Brook/Jules taking up 15-20m of the 29m spent on KCP/Rondo/Lance/Beez, with the rest going towards shooters and another backup PG.

Interesting that Brook was 54th last year and moved up to 10th this season. JR was 54th, but Zubac was 20th (and a pretty good defender by that metric). The data kind of suggests to me coaching and how they were used. JR has the physical tools so I think the right coach could get a lot more of out of him defensively, like Bundenholzer got a lot more out of Brook.

Thank goodness Mil. is capped out, but imagine if Bud got his hands on Jules to pair with Giannis?

my eyes saw him in an all star game.

It's amazing that people still want to dump on this guy.

I guess having a season high 40 point game and scoring 20+ in 5 of 10 games since the break (where your team is 6-4, including a 4 game winning streak) is "not much."

Meanwhile we have our #2 picks out with injuries/medical issue, and we can't shoot 3s and FTs. Fun stuff!

Sure, but there are many in-between steps from contention to lottery bound.

I doubt most of us believed this team was lottery bound. So to excuse this FO for making this team another lottery one is not exactly being fair.

I think a lot of us thought they should at least shoot for the first round of the playoffs

Even Lonzo could score 40 in a triple overtime game .

First he'd have to be healthy enough to play though.

Sacrificed for Kemba Walker? DLo is already comparable to Kemba at 22. That doesn't even include Randle and presumably Zubac.

It's a sunk cost.

I think it'll realistically come down to Kemba/Jimmy/Boogie. I'm "ok" with the first two. Def no to the third.

Wish DLO well, but I don't miss him. Letting Jules go was a travesty, but understandable due to the conflict of interest between Pelinka/Mintz, plus Rich Paul looking to package KCP with LeBron, so I can understand that. Coincidentally, it was letting Zubac go which pains me the most. I always liked Zu and always rooted for him. He was just starting to come in to his own, and showing the promise he showed as a rookie. He was starting the cement himself as the team's future 5. And then he was traded (for no real good reason). It left me feeling sour, and showed signs of fragility in an FO I had backed up to this point. I hope I am wrong, but they are simply out of touch when dealing with player relations; you can't treat these guys like cattle. That always ends up biting all the bad franchises in the rear.

D'lo: No. Good player but to put the team in a position to construct a great roster it needed to be done. And we didn't end up doing bad in the trade either. Not trying to hate but he is a high volume, low efficiency first option in the East. Not gonna let overblow the allstar selection.

Randle: Yes. People will stay he is an empty stat player, but I will take his production any day of the week. An absolute beast in the paint that is even growing his game to the outside as well. I think the better move was to keep him for whatever he wanted. If we needed to create more cap space well.. as much I hate to say it.. Lonzo or Ingram do make a decent amount and could be moved.

Zubac: Yes. Move made ZERO sense. Even if you make the argument that he was soon to be a free agent or we needed shooting. It was a dumb move regardless.

I don't think the biggest Magic supporters can defend the Zu trade, but it really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Plus we did draft Wagner who looks like the energetic stretch 5 that are hoping to have.

My concerns with D'Angelo's efficiency look like they're rearing it's head. The guy has struggled so far this month. He needs a lot of shots just to have passable efficiency because he can be really hot and cold. He's the kind of guy that needs to shoot himself out of slumps. With less shots now that the Nets are healthier, he's not getting that rhythm.

I would be concerned about his fit alongside other scorers that would cut into his shot attempts.

No matter what? 4th and 17, on your own 32, down 3 in the third quarter against even that friend you go easy on?

More than anything, I'm disappointed how little value to no value the FO got out of their departures for the sake of this 2-max plan. Especially since unlike last year, where there was smoke throughout the season of the top-tier free agents (LeBron and Paul George) coming to the Lakers, there is no smoke this time around.
