Closing Strong… Down to eight players tonight.

Perhaps, the Jazz thought they had this one in the bank walking into the arena. Then they ran into a bunch of hungry G-Leaguers and a couple vets playing some of their best ball of the season.

With Rondo sitting, we slid Jemerrio Jones into the starting lineup. He locked up Donovan Mitchell and pulled down 16 boards in the process.

“He’s a savage. He’s a rebounding fool,” JaVale McGee said.

It was KCP and McGee who helped the Lakers go 9-9 down the stretch, those two the only ones scoring in the final minutes as KCP caught fire. They closed strong.

“It’s great to watch guys out there giving it their all and no agenda other than to try to win the game,” Luke said.

The Lakers took the 113-109 win (out rebounding the Jazz 49-35 in the process).

Caruso -- -- With Rondo out, Caruso was moved from the SG role to the point and played big minutes (Bonga was his backup, so he went 43). He had 10 points and 5 assists in his first stint, sinking some pull-ups and finishing at the rim. More of the same in the second half. A lot of issues with Gobert roaming the paint. Multiple layups or even an early dunk that Caruso should have had but couldn’t finish. He was a little too aware of Gobert’s presence back there. Some turnover issues running the point as passes were getting deflected at a high rate. None of these lineups have seen much time together, so I wouldn’t read too much into that. I wish the two throwdown attempts he had would have gone down. He nearly had a poster job on Gobert where he drew FTs that got the bench on their feet. That would have been one of the highlights of the year. At the end of the night, he ran the offense steadily and backed off when KCP was on fire down the stretch. They took the win as a result. You get guys playing D and making shots and we compete. The Lakers quietly win 6 of their last 9 behind that. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-20 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 11 assists, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 5 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He attacked past Gobert and missed the jam (should have had that one as it wasn’t challenged). He lobbed to McGee next time down for the dunk. He setup McGee for FTs off the two-man game. Hesi move but he missed the layup, another one he should have had. Pick and pop to Muscala for a three. He sank a pull-up at the FT line working off a handoff. He scooped up a loose ball and hit the pull-up at the FT line in transition. He swiped a bad pass. He snaked off the screen and hit the jumphook in the middle of the paint. He scored a layup attacking off a high screen. He got tapped on a step-through but Williams dunked it back in. He attacked the paint and hit the cutting KCP for a dunk. He missed a three off the high screen. Quick attack off the catch and he scored a layup off an inside-out dribble. He was blocked on a drive. He threw a pass out of bounds. Quick attack and he drew FTs, he made one. He attacked the paint, sliced sideways to avoid the block and banked it in before falling down. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He couldn’t finish the floater over Gobert. Second Half: His perimeter pass was picked off. Off the mark with the lob pass. He attacked, hung and hit the 12-footer. He attacked out of the horns post and couldn’t finish the layup (should have). He lost his man with the dribble but couldn’t hit the short jumper. Couldn’t finish again over Gobert. He attacked with speed and flipped in the layup. He hit Williams on the screen-roll for the And-1 layup. He attacked and fed Williams for FTs. Another pass deflected on the two-man game, turnover. He missed a wing three over Gobert. He drew FTs on a massive dunk attempt on Gobert, wow, he made one. He was stripped on a drive for a dunk the other way.

McGee -- -- A career-high ten 20-point games for McGee this season. He hammered down a huge lob with 15 seconds left that killed the Jazz. It was set up by KCP’s iso drive left where drew the D and threw it up there for McGee to do his thing. He had 10 points on 4-8 shooting (taking a couple of threes in the first half…second one got him benched). In the second half, he got back to his usual finishing around the rim. I appreciate the effort he’s shown despite not being a playoff team. He’s going hard. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-16 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He threw down after an up-fake to lose Gobert. He was stripped trying to fake a pass and attack. He dunked off the lob from AC on the two-man game. He was fouled on a floater off the two-man game, he made both FTs. He attacked a smaller man in the post, spun and dunked before the help could arrive. He choked a soaring dunk that went out past midcourt. We got it back to him and he hit the jumphook instead. He missed a three. He couldn’t finish and easy putback. He missed another three with the shotclock low and Gobert plugging the paint (Luke sat him). Second Half: He dunked off the KCP steal and lob in the backcourt. He swished a turnaround fade in the post. He tracked down Mitchell and wasted his layup. He couldn’t finish a throwdown over Gobert. Nice challenge on Gobert’s dunk attempt. Illegal screen, turnover. He slipped a layup in under Gobert’s challenge after taking a pass on the roll. He hit a running hook. He grabbed a tough pass and flipped it in like Wilt. He hammered down the lob pass from KCP with 15 seconds left.

Muscala -- -- Strong first half with 13 points on 3-4 shooting from three to go with 6 boards. His best game. The last few have been much better as the outside shot has been falling and he’s been active defensively. He sank four threes tonight. Defensively, a lot of switching and rotating by the team and they all seemed to move well and in unison. He and Williams led the team with the +8. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He grabbed a board but had it stolen trying to pass. He sank a pull-up 16-footer in transition. He swished a three off the pick and pop. He spotted KCP cutting for a layup. Way short on a three a couple feet behind the line. He missed an attempt, kept it alive, had the loose ball find him and eventually scored. He stepped into a wing three and buried it. He took the pass at the top of the key and rained another three. Second Half: He had the chair pulled in the post and that resulted in our post entry pass getting thrown away. He challenged on one end, then hit a three trailing the break on the other. He telegraphed a post entry pass, turnover. He missed a wing three. He regained a possession getting fouled on the offensive glass.

Jones -- -- He’s making the most off this 10-day contract. He got the start at the SF spot. Last game, he was helping lock down Lou Williams. Tonight, he was hounding Mitchell to a 5-17 shooting night, including one rejection out of bounds. Asked about his game, he said, “I can defend, rebound, I can make the players better around me without scoring. I’m just willing to do the little things.” He pulled down 16 boards, hitting the glass with consistency from start to finish. The ball was moving decently tonight and he finished with 5 assists as he keeps it moving (nice find of KCP on one series where he challenged, got the miss, and pushed it out to find him for the three). He needs to work on the handles and the three ball (he sank one). But if he can work on the three, he’ll give you all those little things that work around stars. So, stay in the gym all summer and shoot until your fingers bleed like Jerry West said he used to. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 16 boards (3 offensive), 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a short runner. Excellent challenge, he pulled down the miss, pushed it out and hit Kenny for the three. He forced a turnover on help D. Second Half: He crashed the glass and scored the putback. He drained the wing three. He missed a wing three. He stepped in and took a charge on the baseline. He missed a wing three. Excellent read to rotate over and knock a pass to a roll man away and ignite a break. He traveled taking a pass and being indecisive on the catch. He rejected Mitchell out of bounds.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- This was Kenny’s game down the stretch. He sank a couple of jumpers off a horns set where he took a handoff and got into the midrange. He got to the hoop for some scores and then mixed in a series of passes to McGee for scores. The biggest was a drive left and lob right with 15 seconds left for the dagger finish by JaVale. Some poor clock awareness when we gave him the ball a couple of times to create at the end of the shotclock in the first half. But he took over down the stretch of the fourth. Score after score for the Lakers between him and McGee. “He had an absolutely brilliant game,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 32 points on 13-22 shooting (2-8 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 42 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a wing three. He scored a layup in semi transition. He missed a three. He missed a wing three. He cut off Caruso’s drive, took the pass and threw down with both hands. He missed a long heave at the buzzer. He missed a sideline three. He swished a three in transition. He missed a drive. He pulled up at the FT line and hit Williams for the dunk. He sank an elbow fade over Gobert. Second Half: He made a tech. He scooped up a bad backcourt pass and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He missed a three. He attacked, took contact and scored the lefty layup high off the glass. He lost the ball trying to create. He sank a baseline pull-up. He found Williams in transition for FTs. He drained a three in transition. He drew a foul on Gobert, boxing him out, then a tech on him, he made the tech. He swished an elbow jumper off the handoff. He missed a step-back three. Nice feed to McGee in the paint for the layup. He froze Gobert who was thinking pass on a drive and he scored the layup instead. He attacked and drew FTs on the perimeter, he made one. He swished another jumper getting to the elbow going right. He attacked right and scooped in a layup high over Gobert. He attacked and bounced to McGee for a score. He curled into the paint and flipped it in over the challenge. He iso’d, attacked the paint, drew the D, threw it up and McGee slammed it down with 15 seconds left. He was fouled with 5.6 seconds left up 3, the made one.

Wagner -- -- Two quick fouls off the bench and he had to sit, picking right up where he left off in the last one. He’d finish with 4 fouls in just 12 minutes. A lot of work to do on the defensive end. Offensively, he had a nice throwdown off a drive as well as a layup. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 boards, 1 block and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Instant foul as soon as he entered the game. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. Second Half: He missed a wing three in transition. Quick first step past his man and he threw down. He attacked, took some contact and hit the lefty step-through. He missed an elbow pull-up. Airball by a couple of feet on a corner three, then he fouled.

Williams -- -- Great job getting to the line again and again tonight. Some of that was out of transition situations where he was changing ends well. We had one unit out there with Williams, Muscala and Wagner all on the floor. They switched everything and we worked it out getting a couple threes to fall during that stretch and extend the lead. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-6 shooting (6-9 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He hit the off-hand floater over Gobert working out of the two-man with Bonga. He dunked down a missed jumper. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He missed a short one at the front of the rim. He couldn’t finish a lob. Reverse jam off the jump pass from KCP. Second Half: Illegal screen, turnover. Rare ball watch and he gave up a putback. He took contact in transition and earned FTs, he made both. Fouled again in transition for more FTs, he made both again. Fouled again, this time finishing the And-1 on the screen-roll, he missed the FT. More FTs off the drive and dish from Caruso, he made one. He missed a jumphook.

Bonga -- -- Backup PG minutes with Rondo out. The lack of confidence was apparent in most things he was doing on the floor. He didn’t score, missing all four of his attempts. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Two-man game to set up Williams for the floater. Lost on D, he gave up a layup. Bad pass into a crowd, dunk the other way. He attacked and couldn’t finish. He couldn’t knock down a pull-up 17-footer. He pushed it out and threw it away. He missed a wing three. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Lakers up 3 when Jones sat for Bonga… Timeout Lakers up 21-14… Williams in out of that for McGee… Caruso running the point all quarter… Moe in for Muscala… Moe out for Muscala after two quick fouls… The Lakers led 34-27 after the first… He started a Williams, Muscala, Jones, KCP, Caruso lineup... KCP out for Bonga… KCP in for Caruso to give him his first rest up 4. Bonga running point.… McGee in for Muscala… Caruso in for Bonga up 3… Down 1, he had the starters in there with Bonga instead of KCP… Williams in for McGee, who took his second three, Lakers down 3… Jazz hitting threes all quarter long… The Lakers trailed 59-54 at the half… They trimmed the lead to 1 but issues with Gobert on both ends had them down 8. Timeout… Williams in for McGee out of that… Down 8, Moe in for Muscala… A 10-0 Laker run to tie it up… Bonga in for KCP… The Lakers trailed 83-81 heading into the fourth… He started the Williams, Muscala, Wagner, Jones, KCP lineup. Not sure who the SF is here, maybe Moe… They hit a couple of threes to take a 4-point lead and force a timeout… Caruso in for Moe, Lakers up 2 with 9:36 left… McGee in for Williams a minute later, Lakers up 3… They extended to a 9-point lead off a series of plays by KCP going to his right and forced a timeout with 2 minutes left… A couple of quick scores by the Jazz and the lead was just 4… KCP and McGee closing down the stretch… Luke is closing the season strong. Too bad it’s not in the playoffs… A lot praise for him in the postgame show. IF he somehow sticks (got to think Magic/Pelinka have already decided), he needs to change the coaching staff. Get yourself a cranky old guy who doesn’t give a (bleep) and will tell pouting vets to play the right way (pull Larry Brown out of obscurity) and add an offensive guru on the bench to help you play to your strengths more. Also, get a shooting coach and try to integrate more analytics into what you’re doing. That’s a lot of change, but he really needs to someone to challenge him or to defer a little more to some more experienced technical coaches than he has now...

Here's a thought, Lakers out rebounded the Jazz by 14 and won by 4 points!

Even 5 less Laker rebounds could have tipped the scale towards the Jazz...

Now, explain me as if I were two years old, how can it be that the lineups of LeBron, McGee, BI, Kuzma, Rondo, Lonzo, KCP fail to get us to a winning column, while the lineups of Caruso, Jones, Muscala, Wagner, Williams, Bonga are lining up victories?

Lakers winning these games, at this point, shows how disconnected and pathetic the FO and Luke Walton are.

These meaningless wins, with players that are not even going to be here next year, is the trade off for slipping out of a top 10 draft pick.

Magic is a disgrace. Luke is trying to rack up as many wins as possible for his next coaching job.

The Lakers are an organization it total disarray.

Wtf you want them to do. Miss shots on purpose? Our roster is depleted. Our g league kids are playing their hearts out for their chance to stay in the league. Fans finally are enjoying Lakers bball. One game left quite frankly who gives a f##k. Hope we beat the Blazers too.

It’s not as bad once u think about what to rank for. Playing to win is always good. yes, we do need to tank for a better pick but at this point, prob the past 2 weeks, we’ve been locked in the 10th-12th pick which differ about 1%ish chance for top/top-3 pick... let them play their heart out, Go Lakers!

Shut up, stop whining. Did you see our starting lineup?

Players and coaches don't tank. They will never lose games on purpose.

If Luke can so easily make this active roster beat playoff-bound teams, then maybe his next job should be his current job.

The G-Leagers are playing hard. LeBron and company did not play hard. You should always play hard if you want to win Shaber.

So you are saying they are not handing over wins to a team just because there is LeBron playing?

Who would have guessed?

I’m all for tanking, but what else do you want the Lakers to do? They sat NINE players, including almost all of their first and second string.

Because one group is defending and the other isn't.
