Just as a reminder to everyone:

Brandon Ingram's post All-Star Game Numbers: 27.8 points (57% fg, 52.9% 3p, 75% ft), 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.5 blocks

Yes, it was only in six games before the diagnosis. But he had been trending upwards as the season went on.

January Stats: 19.1 points (51.1% fg, 26.3% 3p, 68.8% ft), 6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.5 blocks
February Stats: 21.3 points (50.4% fg, 38.9% 3p, 75.4% ft), 5.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 0.6 blocks

My biggest gripe with BI... Steals and Blocks. Virtually all elite players average 1 a game of either. I'm not sure if this is something that he can develop though.

I'm more concerned about the opposing players FG%.. it actually dips while Ingram guards them.

Defense isn’t about blocks and steals if you’re a position defender like BI. Rodman is one of the greatest defenders of all time and always had low block and steal rates. He was great at positioning and didn’t gamble.

You can claim defense is about anything you want if that's what you want to believe Ingram is good at.

Advanced stats do no like any aspect of Ingram's game...defense included.

And Steals are important for wing defenders. Rodman was NOT a wing defender.

Blocks shouldn't be an issue for a guy with Ingram's length. Why does he have a 0.6bpg average?

Rebounds and steals...out of all of the starters (Lonzo/Ingram/LeBron/Kuzma/McGee), who had the lowest?

Hint: it wasn't Lonzo/LeBron/Kuzma/McGee.

People keep implying Ingram was a good defender.

People keep implying LeBron is a bad defender.

Why do the stats say otherwise?

my biggest concern with BI is his lack of off the ball value on offense. He is one of the worst wings in the league as far as staying active off the ball... setting picks, using picks, cutting, etc and he is not a floor spacer either. He just sits out there like a statue waiting for the ball so he can iso.
That is why we lost so many games even while BI put up some good numbers late in the year... if you are making all your points in a vacuum while not helping the rest of the team on offense, success will be very shaky.

And if we sign a another star who becomes the #2 behind Lebron then BI playing like this will be an even worst strain on the offense.

DBPM and Defensive Win Shares should only be used to compare players who guard the same position while playing in a similar role. Preferably on the same team.

why NBA players laugh at analytic nerds. Throw all these useless numbers to prove a point. Lets ignrore Kyrie Irving out of his own mouth saying BI guarding him made his life hell.

The 6 last games for BI along with his upwards trending the last month+ is a perfect barometer of what's to come, and then some, as he will continue to grow on all fronts as time goes by.

Thanks JC Smith...

Ingram's February shows why he'll never be a good three point shooter.

6-7 in two games, 1-11 in the other 7 games. 7-18 for the month.

All those numbers combined make up his average, that's where averages come from, combined numbers. Hence his average %39 for the month. Plus with time and experience odds are BI will improve on his 3point shooting...

It's funny how this keeps coming up in spite of it being proven wrong every single time.. with actual data.

We've covered this already.. and it's not true.

I vividly remember GT providing some data last year that indicated BI is more effective when used as an off ball player...paging GT!

And yet, even Ingram confessed he was not playing well off the ball:

https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2018/12/20/18150812/la-lakers-injury-news-brandon-ingram-focus-cutting-movement-return-pelicans-lebron-james

Quote:
For Ingram, his bad habits have always started with his activity off the ball. It sounds like his time away might lead to an alternative approach:

“How good guys were moving without the basketball,” Ingram said of what he noticed about the team while he was out. “I think most of the time we’ve been getting the best shot for the team.

“I think we did really, really good beyond the 3-point line, so we’re shooting with more confidence. Of course on the defensive side, we’re getting better and better each game.”
Sometimes, it just takes watching someone else succeed to learn something about how best to utilize one’s own talents. Ingram has all the physical tools to be effective without the basketball. He just approached the game in a way that didn’t take advantage of those skills. Even he acknowledged that he’s better when he doesn’t dribble the air out of the ball.

“I think when I’m active and when I’m moving around, I think that’s when I play much better. Just cutting off the basketball and having a chance to attack not only for myself, but also for my teammates,” Ingram said.
If Ingram can figure some of this out and takes his own advice, his fit alongside LeBron James will make exponentially more sense. Thus far, the offense when both guys have been on the court has been mostly “your turn, my turn,” and, given how good they both are at creating for others or finishing when others create for them, a significant aspect of both their games has gone underutilized.

I don't feel like digging up the data, Sentient has already done it 3 or 4 times now, every time someone comes in here and say's what you're saying. Him and Kuz are neck and neck as far as off ball movement is concerned. They are also among the league leaders in that regard.

You guys go for Gallinari, Ingles, Covington, Bertans, Gay, Winslow

(All top 10 small forwards in RPM)

I'll take my chances with Ingram.

You mean distance covered?

Where the "lazy" Ingram is 9th in the league?

This guy came and spent the day trashing Ingram before he went off after the all star break.

Then when Ingram was on fire... he went conveniently missing... saying he has a busy life so he had no time to post.

Now he's back trashing Ingram for what reason only God knows why

Ingram's a work in progress... his injury is a risk factor... but I don't get hating on a player with so much potential.

Like I said, it gets weird in here if Ingram doesn't play for a while. His detractors revert back to antiquated narratives, while completely ignoring his progress, and successes.

Seriously...

Ingram himself said he doesn't play well off the ball...

But since you guys don't believe it, you are free to discount what a player describes as a negative about himself.

Check my post history. I didn't post here a lot before or after that. Most guys will tell you I post much more on another site and even there, mostly early in the morning or late at night.

But I owe you no explanation. Believe me or don't. It honestly doesn't matter to me either way.
