Pelinka is GM. Rambis was hired as an advisor in September of 2018. Teams typically don't issue statements that employees of theirs haven't been fired. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

That's actually not how any sports organization works. Ownership doesn't necessarily get involved in the granular level of scouting, day-to-day operations, etc., but every major transaction/signing/hiring-firing of a coach or executive are generally approved by ownership.
|
That approval is usually a rubber stamp. Chris McGowan isn't telling Neil Olshey who he can and can't hire. Neil probably runs it by Chris and lets him know his reasoning, but McGowan isn't telling Olshey that he can't hire and fire people underneath him unless there is some sort of legal issue.
Username wrote: | Stephen A. Smith saying Magic "may" have wanted to fire Rob doesn't exactly sound as strong to me as "Jeanie denied Magic's attempt to fire Rob." |
Stephen A. Smith is Magic's mouthpiece. Since Magic is still hoping to remain friends withe Jeanie, he probably had SAS be more diplomatic with his words. But it's been everywhere that Magic wanted to fire Pelinka and Jeanie said No. As it's been widely reported that Jeanie was even reluctant to let Magic fire Luke. |
It's not always a rubber stamp. That's the whole point of bringing it to ownership in the first place. You cannot make a major decision without it being signed off on. Go read about how John Mara "reluctantly" approved the NY Giants trading Odell Beckham Jr. The GM had to bring the trade to him to sign off on. That's common in all sports.
And again, it's well within Jeanie's right to opt to keep Pelinka. Especially considering she knew the inner workings of the front office better than we do and may have known that Pelinka was more committed to the position than Magic was. |

I saw something on Twitter that said the Lakers are interviewing a couple of European GMs for the role:
-- Robert Pelinkovich: Apparently he's a legend in the Ukraine. Has built up teams from nothing to become Euroleague powerhouses.
-- Roberto Pelincucci: Considered a genius GM/PBO in Italy, ran a team from Rome in the 90s and a Milan team for the past 20 years, a perennial championship contender.
Tweet said that Rob has convinced these guys to come to LA for interviews, and will be interviewing them personally. |

2 - of the tens of millions of Lakers fans who are not on LG, the overwhelming majority don't care if the GM is Bugs Bunny. They just want the team to win.
3 - the number one rule of managing a sports team is: HE WHO LISTENS TO THE FANS WILL SOON BE SITTING WITH THE FANS! |
1 - This is true, though the trend line is negative.
2 - This is true even for the folks on LG. But when the team hasn't won in a long time, people do start to care about the GM.
3 - This is true, but sports fans are fickle. Probably 90%+ of all sports fans in the US would qualify as "casual." As you correctly point out, the people who have enough interest to post on LG are the exceptionally interested fans. While it would be folly to make basketball decisions based on what the fans think (a quick read of some of the ideas on this board will reinforce this), if a team loses the faith of its fans, it is not a foregone conclusion that they will all come back when times are good again. Even worse, we live in an era where direct fan backlash against an owner is easier than ever. How is Jeanie going to handle it if we start to see a social media jihad aimed directly at her? James Dolan wouldn't give a flip. I think Jeanie would break. |

Trading OBJ majorly affects the on field product and ticket sales, as would firing a winning coach. Of course those would have to be serious discussions with the owner.
A head operations guy not being able to fire a manager below them is almost unheard of in sport. Sam Hinkie landed the Sixers Joel Emibiid and Ben Simmons, yet the Sixers owners let Jerry Colangelo fire him, even though ownership signed off on Hinkie's vision and 76er fans, by and large, were fans of The Process. |

And firing a General Manager doesn't majorly affect the on-court product? And doesn't majorly affect the franchise's finances and direction? That person is essentially the second in command in terms of basketball decisions. It's ludicrous to think the owner of the team wouldn't be consulted on that.
Of course, we're strictly operating under the assumption here that Jeanie did in fact block Magic from firing Rob. Because there are also reports that Jeanie told Magic he could make any decisions he wanted (something Magic said himself). |

I disagree. In every organization I have seen, everyone has a limit/level at which they have to consult - or at least inform - higher ups. Michael Eisner had almost autocratic control at Disney, but he had to consult with the board before he hired (and fired) Michael Ovitz.
Do you think Jerry Jones weighs in on every hire made by the Dallas Cowboys? You bet he does, which is why Jimmy Johnson quit. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

Jerry Jones is a hands-on owner. He is the team's GM and is heavily involved in player management, which is fine. Jeanie is supposed to be a hands-off owner, so she's not supposed to micro-manage her chief executive on the basketball side. That's a combination for disaster. |

But they are knowledgeable enough to influence Jeanie.
That's exactly the story: Jeanie has been receiving (and accepting, it seems) advice from Linda Rambis. |

How do we know Linda Rambis isn't a genius? And no, I'm not just brown-nosing our new Laker overloard so I can get a job there.
Seriously, we don't know much about her. She was able to clothesline Kurt's heart, so she can't be all that bad. |

From what I understand the other members of the family can vote her out just like they did with Jim. That might be the best case scenario. _________________ KOBE |
