Makes you wonder, if they didn't know this was coming and got him out because of it. This would have destroyed our team for 20 years.

Not necessarily mutually exclusive. May come to hurt her case as jurors will ask the same question.

Answer (from someone who practices law)? civil case has a lower standard (preponderance of evidence vs. criminal standard-beyond a reasonable doubt). Probably looking to extract $ from Luke and/or Lakers (if she claims that the Lakers knew or should have known about this).

1 - innocent until proven guilty

2 - the story, as reported, is classic. It would've been nothing in 1979, or 89, or 99. In 2009, it might have garnered an off-handed apology from Luke, as in "I apologize if you took it the wrong way," but in 2019, it could be a career ender for Luke.

No, he didn't rape her. But "pushing up" on women - which was common back in my day - just doesn't fly any more.

Luke was a Warriors employee at the time - hard to see how the Lakers would have any liability.

Its like people forgot about Kobe....

That being said something about all this seems off you don't go to the police but you file a lawsuit 3 years after the fact?!

Yeah sure....

It's not off at all if you understand the psychological impact of sexual assault.

Hopefully by 2029, allegations aren't considered a career ender before due process and evidence. This and online swatting makes everyday life frightening.

Sexual Assault is such a broad definition. No attempt at rape took place here yet there are people who assume something like that happened.

I just find this so easy to claim after the fact years later. I mean could this be true as she says? Sure but she also would have to answer why she waited this long to say anything and why not go to the police. Why file a lawsuit instead?

I think the truth was in the middle Luke invited her to his hotel room was hoping for sex she wasn't interested. He probably didn't want her to tell anyone (is he in a relationship or married?) and grabbed her.

Her word vs his and I don't recall hearing any of these type of stories with Luke so this whole thing seems really off to me. Especially when the Lakers ended up hiring him as a Head Coach and the Kings too.

Nah, he was the main reason he left, which is why he gave up money.

The Sacramento Kings and NBA announced Thursday that they have started a joint investigation into the allegations made in a civil suit against coach Luke Walton that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2014.

"The Kings and the NBA take these allegations very seriously and will collaborate to conduct a complete and thorough investigation," the team and league said in a statement.

The Kings' investigation will be led by Sue Ann Van Dermyden, the founding partner of Sacramento law firm Van Dermyden Maddux, and Jennifer Doughty, a senior associate attorney at the firm.

The NBA's investigation will be led by Elizabeth Maringer, the league's senior vice president and assistant general counsel, integrity and investigations.

At the press conference, the attorney mentioned the hotel incident happened in 2014, so it seems closer to nearly 5 years. Had she wanted to file, say sometime last year, she would've been outside of the 3 years / statute of limitations. A new California law effective Jan 2019 extended the statute of limitations for civil suits from 3 to 10 years.

With the NBA and Sacramento Kings conducting investigations, it will be interesting to see what they find out.

Why do the NBA and the Queens investigate? Isn't that the job of a court?

And why in the world is something like this even public before a court did an investigation and came to a result? And why is there even money involved? You should not be able to buy your way out of actions like that.

If it was just a lawyer for the Kings, it could be difficult to get cooperation from NBA people that knew something and kept their mouths shut. There is a huge risk for somebody to act stupid when a senior VP from the league office is also part of the investigation.

I am not saying that people working in the NBA knew something, but the league office will want to know.

The league investigated the fight/incident between Barnes and Fisher even though it didn't happen in a NBA facility. Barnes was suspended for two games and eventually talked his way into a $35,000 fine as well.

Matt Barnes fined $35K for comments about Derek Fisher

Quote:

Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes was fined $35,000 by the NBA for his "inappropriate" comments concerning New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher.

Barnes and Fisher, two former friends and ex-Lakers teammates who were involved in an off-the-court altercation centered around Barnes' estranged wife back in October, were reunited on Saturday night during the Grizzlies' 103-95 win over the Knicks. The two did not appear to interact at all. However, Barnes talked about Fisher several times in the days leading up to the game, and some of his comments drew the league's ire.

"Matt Barnes' comments condoning violence do not reflect who we are as a league or the character of our players," said Kiki VanDeWeghe, NBA executive vice president of basketball operations. "His words are unacceptable and entirely inconsistent with the core principles of this game and the NBA."

Barnes was suspended for two games after the league investigated the altercation between Barnes and Fisher at the home of Gloria Govan in Los Angeles on Oct. 3. The NBA Players Association filed a grievance to try to recoup lost salary during the two-game ban.

Kings, NBA announce joint investigation into allegations against new Sacramento coach Luke Walton

Quote:

The Sacramento Kings and the National Basketball Association announced today that they have commenced a joint investigation into the allegations contained in a civil lawsuit filed Monday against Kings Head Coach Luke Walton.

The Kings have hired Sue Ann Van Dermyden, founding partner of Sacramento law firm Van Dermyden Maddux, who is an expert on employment law with decades of experience in conducting investigations, and Jennifer Doughty, a veteran investigator and senior associate attorney at Van Dermyden Maddux. They will lead the Kings investigatory team.

The NBA's investigatory team will be led by Elizabeth Maringer, Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, Integrity and Investigations. Prior to joining the NBA, Ms. Maringer served 12 years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, including three as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.

The Kings and the NBA take these allegations very seriously and will collaborate to conduct a complete and thorough investigation.

^That's about as serious as it gets. While ESPN's legal analyst Roger Cossack says it could take 2-3 years before the civil case goes to trial, the Maringer Report will likely be completed long before the trial so the NBA/Kings can move forward with the appropriate action.

The Mavericks workplace misconduct investigation by the NBA took about 7 months, it covered a lot of ground with 215 interviews and more than 1.6 million documents evaluated for the report.

While the size and scope of the Walton investigation might not be as extensive, it will take a while to get interviews, phone records, and any video footage. It would not be a surprise to see the report land as early as the free agency period beginning in July.
