The Earth is rotating. If a helicopter takes off in LA and stays in the air for 10 hours at the same spot, will it land in NY?

The Earth is rotating. If a helicopter takes off in LA and stays in the air (with what reference frame and velocity?) for 10 hours, will it land in NY?

Have at it.....

Well, no -- because the Earth is rotating in the other direction. Per your hypothesis, it'd take 21 hours.

But the answer is still no, because the helicopter isn't outside the Earth -- the atmosphere is a part of the rotating system, and the helicopter is still in the atmosphere. The Earth, the atmosphere, and the helicopter flying in it are all rotating together.

Here's a question for you. You're in an airplane, flying at 550 MPH relative to the ground. Your friend is sitting in the seat in front of you. He asks if you're going to eat your peanuts, and if not, if he can have them. You say "sure," and toss them to him. Will your 552 MPH throw physically remove his head, or just put a peanut-bag sized hole in it?

The earth is orbiting the sun which is orbiting the super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way in a quickly expanding universe. You would be out in the middle of space quite far from the earth if you stay in the same spot.

The answer is in the question:

Quote:

stays in the air for 10 hours at the same spot

If it went anywhere else, then it would not be in the same spot, but in a different spot.

I messed that up. Answer according to this The Earth is rotating. If a helicopter takes off in LA and stays in the air (with what reference frame and velocity?) for 10 hours, will it land in NY?

What are the wind speeds and directions? And what form does the auxilary tank(s) that allows it to stay aloft for 10 hours take? And I'll also need to overall drag coefficient for both the helicopter and the tank(s).

It may take a minute for Jodeke to understand since he has never seen a helicopter and still uses his globe of Pangaea.

For all you (Y) I got the question from LINK I thought a little levity would be in order considering the political crisis we're experiencing.

Jodeke thinks physics is where the head centurion leads the recruits in calisthenics. As a side note, Jodeke is the lone living person who had an actor play him in Ben Hur.

I'm not going to look at the site, rather I'll just guess -- is it the Flat Earth Society?

I just watched the Flat Earth documentary on Netflix. At the end of the movie, a group of flat earthers did an experiment to prove that the earth is flat. After the experiment didn't give them the result they expected, one of the guys says, "Hmmm, that's interesting." And then the movie ends.

Man I could save a lot of money on traveling if that were true. You just have to stay in the air long enough. Would cut down on commuting to work.

Lets say this cartoon theory is true. The earth rotates at 1040 mph. If you were to jump the moment of impact with the ground would destroy your feet.

No. The helicopter in the air is no more "off the earth" than a fish in the ocean is. It is "swimming" in the atmosphere being held to the earth.
