Garland is a better shooter...Simons more athletic.
Different positions too. |
I thought they were both to be lead guards. |

Put him at PF in a more conventional lineup with Lebron at SF and Kawhi at SG or just bite the bullet and start Zion at C. _________________ Under New Management |

I get the Kawhi at SG first time for him though but Zion at C...I dunno. _________________ Trade AD now. |

Hopefully starting while Kuz comes off the bench. _________________ Under New Management |

I'm a Duke fan:
No.
He has the talent. Problem is, he has too much confidence. He's a player who needs to start on a bad team and is allowed to be the man.
Counterargument is RJ playing next to LeBron and learning from the best...good developmental story but questionable how it would help LeBron and the Lakers win now. |
Couldn't you say the same about Garland though? He might become a good NBA guard 2+ years from now... but will he be able to defend any guard next season from one of the 16 teams who are in this year's playoffs? Any time he's on the court in 2019-20, we may as well hang a "pick me for your mismatch target" sign on him.
Anyway, I'm a big fan of drafting the BPA. Just wanted to ask this question about Garland in general, it's not directed at ya specifically. |
I don't see Garland the same. RJ is a SF. LeBron is a SF. DG is an Attack Guard.
Our biggest needs last year were Attack Guard and shooting. Garland can do both and both translate well from college.
If you get RJ, you're duplicating skillsets while not addressing needs. If you know you're getting Kyrie, cool, pick RJ. If not, take Garland. |
I didn't mean Garland is the same player as RJ or that they play the same position. And yeah, hope the FO selects whoever is the BPA.
You'd said it's questionable how RJ would help LeBron and the Lakers win now. So I was only asking about Garland's readiness to contribute to winning now. He's only 19 and small/skinny... won't be able to defend any current starting NBA guards... and will take time to adjust to NBA defenses in order to start shooting at a good %age. So I'm thinking it will take him perhaps 1-2 years before he can start consistently contributing as a starting 5 player? This isn't a bad thing btw, just a fair expectation to have of a young player with his build?

Outside of Zion and maybe Hunter/Clarke all of these 2019 young guys are going to be bad as rookies. _________________ Under New Management |

Yes, agreed. That's why I'm trying to point out that taking the BPA over thinking about fit applies even to Garland. Because some feel we need to take him since he'll be a good fit next to Zo. But Garland won't be ready as a starting 5 player for 1-2 years... and Zo may not even be here in 1-2 years... and even LeBron might be gone after 2, who knows? |

So it's a good idea to have low expectations for our pick.
Most likely he won't even play in the playoffs if we make it this year.
And since our coach is Frank, he might not play sorry defenders like Garland in the regular season |

Right, which is why scouting and selecting for BPA over fit is the way to go. Garland could check off both boxes, though. _________________ Under New Management |

You're right... although, I'd prefer to say have "reasonable" rather than "low" expectations.
That's a good point, hadn't really considered the coaches in all of this.

Nothing wrong with that either. Not everyone can be Zion, hehe.

If he does check both boxes, that'll be reason to celebrate. I'm not going to get too attached to the pick just yet tho, because it seems very likely we'll trade it.

Lonzo is the primary Ball handler.
If he stays...you don't take a 6'2 guy as a shooting guard unless it's Kyrie. _________________ Trade AD now. |

You probably won't find a single person who wouldn't prefer to have Klay-sized SG... but do you see any sitting in this draft for us to take?

Reddish and to some extent Culver and Hunter can play at 2.

I don't want to get stuck on the 2 spot or any spot. That's what I'm trying to say. If we're keeping the pick long-term, my hope is that in 3+ years, we'll be able to look back at this draft and say the FO took the best player they could have with the pick. Easier said than done, of course, and hindsight is always 20/20.
