Continuing the trend of being willing to open the checkbook on the condition that it's for the wrong person.

Unless some top FA asked for Jason Kidd, it makes zero sense.

What is the allure of Kidd and why would he be paid so damn much. He has to be getting us Kyrie or something, because otherwise this whole thing makes no sense.

Former head coach, and someone LA wanted on their bench in some capacity.
Business wise, it makes sense why they paid him to obtain his services.

Im actually intrigued of what Kidd can do as someone who helps develop the skills of our guards and wings but I hope we didnt blow the whole budget on him and then cheap out on other assistant positions

If we like Kidd so much, why Vogel and not Kidd for HC?

The Lakers are hiring Lionel Hollins as an assistant coach, league sources tell ESPN. Hollins is the all-time winningest coach in Memphis and also led Brooklyn to the playoffs. Hollins joins Jason Kidd on Frank Vogel’s new staff.

Both Vogel and Hollins are coaches Rambis is said to have really liked.

From an article about a run in Hollins had with Hollinger dating back to when the two were in Memphis (June 2013)

Quote:
By attacking Hollinger out of some misguided distaste for new thinking, Hollins proved that he's definitely not the right coach for the Grizzlies as they head into the future. What Hollins should really be concerned about is the fact that more and more teams are embracing analytics like the Grizzlies have.

If he keeps up his stubbornness in the face of mounting evidence that much of what he believes to be true about basketball is wrong, he might not be the right fit with any team.

John Hollinger isn't the enemy—he's just a guy who had a few more thoughtful (and ultimately useful) ideas about roster construction than Hollins did. By shooting the messenger, Hollins not only ensured he wouldn't be back with Memphis, but he may also have ensured that he won't ever work for any of the league's brightest franchises.

Nice. Did he ever change his ways while coaching Brooklyn Nine Nine?

When Ty Lou was the highest paid assistant in CLE, he got $1.625M/year.

I didn’t see one picture all last year with Luke and Lebron smiling.

It's possible Rambis/Vogel hired Hollins not just because he coaches defense well, but because he provides a different perspective on the modern game. It's better to hire people whose strengths can cover your weaknesses. Vogel may recognize that he can get over-reliant on analytics, and needs somebody close who can temper him when needed.

I have no idea if that's true, but it is a reasonable justification of the hire.

Lakers coaching staff is low key 🔥 right now. Lionel Hollins is an OG and his voice is well respected and Kidd’s IQ is off the charts. Now they should hire Irv Roland for the player development role

At least lebron likes the staff

I’d much rather have a staff that understands the modern game. That would be significantly more valuable IMO.

Yes, me too. I'm just wondering out aloud here... can we tell anything about potential upcoming trades from the coaching staff?

I mean, if we had to guess, does the coaching staff seem to be more suited towards coaching young players or Vet Mins?

It's nice to have multiple people on the staff who know how to make the playoffs.
But Kidd getting paid the most out of any assistant in the league makes me worried.
