Damn if you do damn if you don’t. If he didn’t play he would’ve got killed for not trying to come back and now he is potentially out for a long time
I'd rather take a media hit than a medical hit; KD should have "erred on the side of caution." But hind sight is usually 20/20. Hope he has a full recovery.
Everyone knew there was a high risk of an achilles injury given that his calf was already compromised. That the Warriors doctors medically cleared him was basically selfish negligence (they knew he would leave in free agency, so they gave 0 (bleep) about his future), and every player in the NBA will think twice about joining that organization in the future. It's a shame that KD did not seek out a second opinion of an independent doctor, but i suspect that the competitor in him did not want to be told no.
This is just very sad. 31, but he was in his peak prime years. Question is, if he didn’t play yesterday, will his Achilles has been too damaged it would happen at some time when he resumed playing?
That's the thing. It's never known. It could have happened in practice, it could have not happened at all, it could have happened in another game, it could have happened in the off-season.
These things you can never really know.
With Kobe's it was more obvious because of him being run into the ground. KD's wasn't like that.
To me, the initial injury against Houston seemed Achilles damage tear waiting to happen. With Kobe, you can also attribute to all injuries in that Golden State game and also the information that came out Kobe was pushing himself so much trying to carry that team and ignored his body telling him to slow down. Both case seems inevitable to happen.

Like everyone else, I was upset last night when we learned of the injury because on the surface it seems so preventable. I hope he can return close to where he was before injury. All that said, I feel like the media and Twitter are going a little overboard in praising KD's heart and courage. He plays basketball, he is not a member of SEAL Team Six. All reports before the game was he had no pain, and his personal training staff agreed with GSW's training staff that there was no material increase in risk if he played. So he had no pain, and the professionals are telling him there is no material increased risk...how does that require "heart and courage"? On top of that, he knew he had a $30+ Million option next season.
Don't get me wrong, it sucks...but the hyperbole is out of control. It took far more "heart and courage" to do what Looney did if reports are correct.
What does this mean for the Lakers and NYK? Will the knicks still try to trade for AD?
I read this morning on Bleacher Report that the Knicks are divided on trading for AD. They don't want another Carmelo situation where they give up everything for one guy.
Most people would be well served getting a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th opinion. A contingent of medical professionals knew this scenario would happen. The calf mobility is inserapable from achilles mobility: https://twitter.com/DrJesseMorse/status/1138172635974709253

Half apologizing. Crying for the cameras. Disgusting. Announce the injury and get off stage. Can't believe people are buying his bs. He's just trying to get sympathy for himself.
You don't think it's possible that Myers was crying because he knew it was (partly) his fault, and also because the injury likely wiped out their best chance at another championship, either this year or in the future?
Or maybe he likes KD and is sad to see him injured?
I've said it a million times already. All that press conference did was create sympathy ... for Bob Myers. Completely self serving.
Andi that 1/2 apology was disgusting. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”
Wow, I thought the 1%ers in the Bay Area were prettier, smarter, enlightened-er, woke-er, than the rest of us. So much for that. They won't take near as much heat as they deserve.
I think KD opts in and rehabs the year on the Warriors dime.
I think so, too.
After-all, he makes $31MM next year. If he sits out, then presumably, the same people lining up to give him a max contract this off-season, will be interested in signing him to one next off-season.
(By the way, I'm not sure any of those teams actually exist.)

I think Durant should have gotten a 2nd opinion outside the Warriors staff. I mean the Warriors medical staff job is to get players back on the court as quickly as possible, especially in the NBA finals.

They are 100% wrong & naive. They can’t honestly believe that.
not 100% sure accurate, but Windhorst claimed KD has his own medical/training people that are also always there and work with GSW people. Claimed his team needed to sign on the previous game when he did not play.

Agreed. I wonder if GSW does him right and pays him the max for at least one more year beyond that to see how he looks once healed (since he most likely won't play at all next year, assuming the full tear). I just can't see any team giving KD the speculative max. You're talking about a four year deal where, going into it, you know the first two years are a bust. And years 3 and 4 have a 50/50 shot of sucking, too. What team can tie up their cap space like that?

I think KD's injury will have a domino affect on this summers free-agency, starting with the Knicks, Nets, and Clips who had plans to target him and trickling down to teams like us. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

We all know what that's like. Every injury from this point forward will raise questions if they're being handled correctly. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

I saw that segment too. Could have been from Durant's camp. Shows the heterogeneity of "medically informed" decisions IMO.

I agree, although I see it more from the player empowerment angle this time. Seems like players will be more skeptical than us. For example, Lonzo is working with non-team personnel to prevent injury (Andy Barr): https://www.instagram.com/p/ByjsX4EHu_U/
Kawhi took this whole patient empowerment thing up a notch and rejected what the Spurs doctors told him about his quad condition. He probably saved his career by demanding a trade. Personally, I don't blame the medical staff as much as the system. Injuries aren't predictable, and there's no consensus on the best way to treat or prevent certain injuries (see Kobe's experimental knee procedure in 2011).
