The Lakers knew the risk before entering this "game". So did the Clippers. So did the Raptors when they traded for him.

Quote:

No Leonard, the Lakers better hope that Danny Green is still around in a few days or the likes of Seth Curry, Enes Kanter, Boban Marjanovic, Willie Cauley-Stein, Elfrid Payton, Kelly Oubre Jr., Richaun Holmes, T.J. McConnell, Markieff Morris, etc.

Most of these names will be gone in the next two days.

Like LBJ, Kawhi will make decision on his own terms. Toronto is still a pretty good backup option for him.

I'd rather they error on the side of thinking big than thinking small (cough cough MozDeng).

I don't get why the Lakers don't at least reach deals with guys on minimum deals or with whomever they'd sign with the exception. They don't have to sign until after Kawhi is hopefully signed, but that doesn't mean they can't secure commitments.

My guess is vet min guys don't wanna accept they are vet min guys until late into FA. If you look at it historically, the guys that sign the latest are the vet min guys.

High risk/high reward is the only way to pay to play when it comes to the Lakers. Let's hope we hit it big with Kawhi.

It is high-risk, but the worst thing we could do is change course half-way through.

I'm all-in on this. These are high-stakes but it's not like in previous years where we were going in with a pair of deuces hoping are glamour would win it. We're going into this game holding a strong hand and we're well-prepared.

If the Lakers can't get Kawhi, perhaps they can sign guys like Cousins, Morris, Rondo, McGee, KCP, etc. to 1 year contracts and have another near-max opening after next season...

If, if, if, iF!!! we miss out on KL, then we're still in decent shape to build with.

We have $33.9M for multiple players plus various maneuvers and exceptions. I'd put Danny Green at the top of the list. He'd likely follow Kawhi, but still - not too-old 3&D wing with 2 rings is a GOOD pickup, even if we have to pay him $10-$12M (comparable to his $10M take last year). Cousins on the cheap $$5M) wouldn't be bad either. Oubre on an RFA challenge or Dragic ($19M) in a trade is also possible (though why PHX would help us is a mystery).

We might have to bring back some portion of meme team (ugh), but McGee ($4M) and Rondo (vet min) could help this squad. With guys like Iggy, Carter, and Melo out there potentially available for vet min, plus Quinn Cook becoming UFA today, we could sport a roster like this...

C - McGee, Cousins
PF - AD, Kuz, Dudley,
SF - LBJ, Carter, THT
SG - Green, Daniels, Norvell
PG - Cook, Caruso, Rondo

Not the full Infinity Gauntlet we wanted, but still a better shot than last year.

If Kawhi returns to the Raptors (this is what I think), would it be possible to overpay Oubre? This guy could be a good addition to our roster

What can the suns offer him?

That is far from a contender, and lacks tools to improve in the next three years.

Taking a closer look, the Lakers are taking the highest risk among the three teams. The Raptors have no tools or options; The Clippers resigned Beverly, added a 1st rounder while acquiring Harkless, and could still resign Zubac. The Lakers can only hope for a decent supporting cast if Kawhi doesn't sign.
