Kuzma has to be very versatile this coming year. He has to be able to come in off the bench, and really add some energy, aggression, speed. He has to be able to defend the 4 or 3, and sometimes be willing to take on 2s. He is someone who should be working very hard with Frank Vogel and the coaching staff on his defense. He has tools to be a good defender, but has not shown it on a consistent basis. With AD backing him up, he can be more aggressive and assertive on D. Then on offense, he has to get that 3 point shot back. He has to be working on his 3 ball like crazy. The Lakers went out of their way to keep him a Laker. They believe he will be an all-star for them down the road. They seemingly liked him more than Ingram. I understand why, because last season I was saying much the same, trade Kuzma and Ball last, everyone else first. Because Ball and Kuz fit around LBJ well and were quality support guys.

If Kuzma takes this challenge on, and isn't about his numbers/stats. He can spearhead a very good 2nd unit.

Rondo/Caruso
Bradley
KCP/Dudley
Kuzma
Davis

That's a lineup that honestly can beat some starting 5s in the NBA. Especially if AD gets taken out early in the 1st and 3rd Q, allowing him to come back in and get a 5-6 minute run with the 2nd unit.

We need Kuz to be able to colorably guard SFs. Has to work on his agility and footspeed to keep up with him. I'm not sold on his PF defense as he's not physical enough but if he can stick with some of the more physical SFs, that would really help us.

That's an eye opener. Now I know why they kept Kuz. I wonder if the plan all along was to make LBJ the main distributor.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is Kuz’s best position to defend the 3? He was terrible at the 5 last season, and guards put him on skates (like they do everyone else). In his rookie year, he was assigned to Porzingis in the second half at MSG and did a great job. But that was two seasons ago, and Porzingis is a 4.

But yes, if he could become a decent defender at the 3, he will definitely find more playing time and possibly close out games. It will make me miss Ingram a little less as well.

Yeah. But that's because he's not strong enough to guard most PFs, and too slow to stay with top SFs.

But we need him to improve on that end but I can see him closing games at "PF."

Nice breakdown. It was obvious how much more Kuz was moving without the ball than other two who were traded. Nice highlights showing how Kuz understood how to get into the seam at the right time to give Lebron the angle and how it pays off when you're confident shooting with both hands and not afraid to go the line.

Most def. Kuz as an off ball cutter for others like AD/Boogie (both good passing big men) will be great too.

Wow. If he could finish those, that’s a game changer...

People are in for a treat. Our big man rotation last year could not make 1/10th of the passes we will see from AD/Boogie from the elbow for example. You cut, you will eat.

I'm expecting our shooters to be getting a lot of open looks and, unlike, last year's team they're confident enough to take those shots. I'm not expecting to see nearly as many shot-clock winding down heaves this season.

It's because Kuz can move without the ball. Problem with Ingram is he would go all ISO all the time and the offense would stop. I am very happy the Lakers FO kept Kuz versus Ingram.

Kuz looks in shape.
Anyone think he can man the SF spot?
Anyone think he can actually start playing the SG spot? :O I'm not saying we need him to play the 2 spot. Just wondering if he could.

I actually think he has SG skills on offense. The defensive side may be the worry. But are there many SGs in the league that would cause a problem for that?

LBJ is functionally a SF b/c that's the position he will have to guard with AD at PF.

So if Kuz wants to start, he has to be able to check guards. That's why it probably makes more sense to make him a 6th man.

he really doesn't have the lateral defensive ability to do it. he's almost quick enough but his technique completely sinks his ability

Kuzma if he can learn to guard big SFs will have his position.
He was definitely not a center fit. And would have trouble with big PFs.

But if he can learn to keep his feet on defense with SFs, he will have a physical advantage that he did not have with C and PFs who were bigger than him.

His offense is not a problem as he moves without the ball.
But he has to find his position on defense.

It has been mentioned that LeBron will start at PG, means Kuzma will probably start at SF

Why?

It's about what position you defend. LBJ for sure isn't defending PGs.

Also, AD doesn't want to start at center so he's penciled in at "PF."

I think we will go with something like:

Bradley
Green
LBJ
AD
JAV

to start the season.

LBJ can run the offense but Bradley will guard the opposing PG.

Could be Bradley and Kuz guarding the two guard positions

Lmao.

One: Danny Green is a starter barring major injury or a huge, unexpected drop in his game (and even then he’d for sure start the season as a starter).

Two: Kuzma can’t defend guards. That’s just asking him to get embarrassed and weakening the Lakers’ lineup from the start.
