“Kobe played the game with a greater flare than the other people,” West said. “I hear the “Kobe mentality” all the time. There’s a lot of players that have the mentality, but they don’t have the skill.”

I agree to a certain point but that's kind of blatantly obvious when you word it that way.. There's been tons of players who have the skill but not the mentality as well. Kobe was obviously very gifted athletically but I don't think he was ever the most athletically gifted player in the nba at any time during his career which is just a bigger credit to him and his work ethic.. It was the combination that made him who he was and that's what "Kobe Mentality" is too me at least.

Somewhat, but he said it right. I don't see really any players as skilled as Kobe in the NBA right now. AD seems to be up there, skill wise though, I just don't know about HIS mentality.

Big Baby had the skill and the mentality...

He just applied it to eating instead of basketball.

it's not uncommon for people with less talent to work harder to compensate, and by the same token some people with immense talent not work as hard. Bryant was the rare case of someone who was super talented and outworked you.

I think the attitude, the attention to detail, the skill of Kobe are comparable to MJ, I’m sorry West, I haven’t seen that from many in this generation of basketball.

Nah, it takes a special mentality for someone to be such a sociopath.
Kobe's work ethic is one of a kind. It's something that will never happen again.

So I think it's the other way around. Lots of players have the skills, but don't work like Kobe.

I agree. Nobody took care of business off the court, nobody had his desire to win, and nobody could play thru pain like KB.

I actually think very few have the skill and even few have the mentality. The latter feeding the former which holds so many back.

I know Jerry WAS a Laker, but he is a Clipper now and any Jerry posts should be in the General Forum, NOT the Laker Forum...

I don't know about that. There are plenty of guys in the NBA who have no business being there, but it took a certain type of mentality to work and fight there way into the league. As far as skill level, who's on Kobe's level, without the mentality? The only person that comes to mind is T-Mac.

But Kobe has done a terrific job of building his brand and developing this idea of Mamba Mentality.

The ONLY player on the Lakers to mirror Kobe's training regimen to my knowledge was Caron Butler. Imagine that - one of the BEST PLAYERS EVER right in front of you and only one player to train with him.

Tells me a couple of things - 1) Kobe trained harder that others wanted to 2) Players in the NBA may play for reason OTHER than wanting to win (imagine that).

Slightly related note - are Kobe and Lebron the Batman and Superman of the early 2000s NBA?

I see this a lot but I think it misrepresents who Kobe was as a player. Kobe was a tremendous all around athlete. If he wasn't quicker than you, he was stronger than you. If he wasn't stronger than you he was quicker than you. And it almost didn't matter who you were, he was going to jump over you and punch it on your head. He was never truly at a disadvantage in matchups because he was so well rounded athletically. What made him a cut above his peers was the fact that he had many of the same athletic gifts in addition to the skills, IQ, and work ethic that made him dominant.

Great point. Funny enough I think we now have Batman and Batman v. Superman and Superman in Los Angeles.

Kobe obviously worked very hard. But he kind of branded himself based on his workouts, so there's a lot of information about them; we don't know much about the workout regimen of most players. For all I know the hardest working guy in league history might be some second round pick who never got out of training camp because he wasn't that skilled.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Whether you break down Kobe's success to mentality/skill to 80-20 or 50-50 or 20-80 or whatever, the success is the same. And that's all that matters.

Mentality? Maybe....

But not the work ethic. Kobe had it all: the mentality, skills and work ethic. In fact, he had an over abundance of work ethic. Kobe was a psychotic robot.
