After 10 years in the Lakers front office, Director of Player Personnel Ryan West is leaving the organization, league sources tell ESPN. West has been well-regarded league-wide for his role in many of the Lakers draft successes of the past decade.

Surprise surprise.

Jeanie’s issue with the West family is going to hurt this franchise.

I'm sure that people will see his last name and assume that this is a devastating blow. It's not.

Is it confirmed that’s the reason he’s leaving?

I don’t think so.

I just see we have old man Phil and Rambii while Ballmer is employing the respected West family.

Not like Ujiri is here or anything.

I liked Ryan west but it doesnt change the direction of the team much while LBJ is here so no big loss in the short term. Long term it might be another story but ill let the future Lakers worry about that

This franchise hasn't been the same since Dr. Buss passed. Should've kept the guy. He'll find another position quick.

In the short term as in his season? Sure. But given how picks we have the next five years, and where we'll be picking when we do, it only makes it more imperative that we nail those picks. Losing West is a huge blow in that respect.

Draft picks won't be helping this team for the next three years so short term as in how long LBJ will be with us. We will still have Jesse Buss in charge of the drafting side of the business and he has already proven he knows what he is doing.

Am I thrilled we no longer have him? No. But I wouldn't call it a huge blow, more like news I heard this Saturday and will forget about in a few weeks

I understand him deciding to leave. 10 years is a long time to be with an organization without a lot of upward mobility. West was being groomed by Mitch, who was mentored by his dad, for bigger things. After the big shakeup West kinda fell into obscurity while Jesse Buss' star has risen.

This.

The top spots for Lakers will be dominated by the Buss family. By leaving, he gets a shot at moving upward in some other organization. I expect to see him as the GM of some franchise in the near future.

We can fault Buss nepotism, which is certainly a real thing, as being responsible for West's career stalling and ultimate departure. However, if he wasn't the son of Jerry West would he have gotten his job in the first place?

Did he leave, or was he let go? I see conflicting reports.
