From The Athletic:
Quote: | Why isn’t this guy signed? League executives don’t seem to believe he is willing to accept a lesser role. And that becomes a distraction with a player of his star power (from a media standpoint). The press conference in OKC when he laughed at the idea of coming off the bench still haunts his career. It has put this black cloud over how he’s viewed in front offices around the league. Teams don’t really doubt whether he’s talented enough still. It’s whether or not he’s going to deviate from his way of playing basketball. To his credit, he did that a bit in Houston. In his brief stint there, he took a ton of 3-pointers and didn’t disrupt the “flow” of the offense too much.
Ultimately though, teams don’t believe Melo when he says he will do what it takes if he’s given a shot. He’s an abysmal defensive player. He doesn’t move the ball much or make the extra pass often. He’s a ball-stopper on offense. Instead of quick decisions like we see from Olympic Melo or Hoodie Melo, NBA Melo holds the ball and jab steps the life out of a possession. That’s a disruption on the court that teams don’t feel the juice is worth the squeeze at this point. He isn’t being blackballed; there’s a stigma about him as a player on the court that has caught up with him. Unfortunately, he needs an opportunity from a team to prove that stigma isn’t true. |
