Felicity Huffman, 13 others to plead guilty in U.S. college admissions scandal: prosecutors

Actress Felicity Huffman and 13 other people have agreed to plead guilty to participating in what prosecutors call the largest college admissions scam uncovered in U.S. history, federal prosecutors said on Monday.

Prosecutors, as part of a plea deal, agreed to recommend a prison term at the "low end" of the four to 10 months Huffman faces under federal sentencing guidelines. She also agreed to pay a $20,000 fine and restitution.

Their lawyers probably knew the government had them dead to rights. Louglin and her husband better take a plea deal while they still can.

Friend of mine told me that when the DoJ charges someone, 97% plead guilty, and of the remaining three percent, 97% of the trials result in guilty verdicts, meaning there's a one-in-one-thousand chance of getting off once they've got you in their sights. So....yeah.

I have read something similar in the past.

Well she was warned just like everyone else; Accept the plea deal that was offered immediately, or face more charges. Everybody else was smart enough to accept their likely 4 month jail stints. Now Laughlin and Hubby are facing a likely 2 year stint in the pokey, more if they keep trying to drag it out.

Their lawyer, Sean M. Berkowitz, should know better. Heck, he's most famous for saying the following during closing arguments of the Enron prosecution:

Quote:
"There is irrefutable evidence these honchos broke the law, and these men shouldn’t be allowed to “buy their way out of this. No matter how rich and powerful you are, you have to play by the rules.”

Even odds the prosecutors remind him of that should they be dumb enough to take it to trial.

Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman could cut plea bargains if they want 'em -- but they wouldn't be getting off easy ... because prosecutors want prison time, TMZ has learned.

Federal law enforcement sources tell TMZ, any plea would come with a recommendation by prosecutors that the actresses serve some time behind bars. The official told us, "You can't have people being treated differently because they have money. That's how we got to this place. Every defendant will be treated the same."

Why the heck are federal law enforcement officials talking to TMZ about anything?

I know TMZ has the tabloid reputation, but they have grown into an actual news gathering agency of significant and mostly reputable note. Hell, they broke the story of the OBL raid in Pakistan.

Yeah, if they break the news, you can pretty much bet that it's legit.

Deal, or no deal? Lori Loughlin rejected a plea agreement offered by prosecutors before she was hit with another charge for her alleged involvement in a nationwide college admissions scandal, a source confirms to Us Weekly.

A second insider told Us on Tuesday, April 9, that the Full House alum, 54, and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, turned down a plea deal that included a minimum two-year prison sentence. Hours later, the couple were charged with money laundering conspiracy.

Two years on a plea deal. Wonder what it will end up being on a conviction.

Right from the start Loughlin and Huffman have approached this whole situation differently. Huffman's demeanor and dress during her court appearances has been restrained and contrite while Loughlin has been all smiles and public glad handing.

Digging a grave for themselves - should have been contrite and plead out like Huffman. But they are committed now. I guess they figure if they are faced with time anyway, may as well make the prosecution prove their case in court.

so what is the mastermind of this scheme looking at in terms of prison time? Even though he pleaded guilty and is cooperating with feds thats a very easy choice for a snake like this to make once caught so he shouldnt get too much reduction in time served.

This could be bad for Loughlin and her family. If this ex-coach can corroborate the daughter knew she was part of the scam she can be charged as well.

Quote:
On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts announced that Laura Janke, a former assistant coach for USC’s women’s soccer team, will plead guilty to conspiracy to commit racketeering.

Janke, a resident of North Hollywood, was one of the 11 people who was previously indicted for their alleged role in the college admissions scandal. She is now currently cooperating with authorities, according to the press release.

...

Janke allegedly received an email from Singer in July 2017 asking to create a crew profile for Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli‘s youngest daughter, Olivia Jade, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

“Ok sounds good,” Janke responded, according to the documents. “Please send me the pertinent information and I will get started.”

The complaint alleged the couple devised a plan to “present their younger daughter, falsely, as a crew coxswain for the L.A. Marina Club team, and [said Singer] requested that the Giannullis’s send an ‘Action Picture,’ asking a few days later for a picture on the ‘erg’ — or rowing machine, which Giannulli did a few days later.”

The documents then state that once Olivia Jade was accepted to USC as a crew recruit, despite the fact that she did not participate in crew, Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly paid $50,000 to USC’s senior associate athletic director Donna Heinel.

Loughlin and Mossimo deserve whatever they end pop getting as punishment (and I don't buy for once second that they didn't know what Singer was doing). But I don't think there is anything productive to come out of charging the daughter even is she was aware of what was going on. She was a teenage kid being pushed by her parents into something she really didn't want to do in the first place (go to college - outside of the oarty factor of course), so even if she knew what was going on, I don't think she really had any leeway to not go along with what her parents were doing.

So no punishment at all, basically. Hopefully she does some good with the 250 hours of community service.

Do you really think she'll do 250 hours community service? If so what kind. Bet she won't be working CalTrans or anything else that would break a nail. Where will she serve her 14 days and how many will she serve?
