Coach is an important part to a team. Phil to the Bulls and Jordan, to the Lakers and Kobe, Pop to Spurs and Tim, Kerr to Warriors and Stephenson. The GM assembly the pieces, the great player carry a team, but it’s the coach who gives the team characters, and great coach make a good team a great team and a good player a great player. Frank has done a good job with Pacers and makes them a really good team, with limited talents. He had only one star player in David West and an adequate starter in George Hill. But he developed young Paul George, and utilized well players like Stephenson and Hibbert. He put them together and made them a good team to flight with peak LBJ. It’s really impressive to what that Pacers have achieved, but not enough. Let’s see what he could do with obviously better talents in Los Angeles. Can’t wait the season to be opened

Now that all the summer activity has settled and everything has had time to marinate I actually feel a lot more confident in Vogel as our hc than I did at first. He seems to have a very good bball head on his shoulders, coupled with a very strong and experienced coaching staff, as well as one of the top rosters in the league. In comparison to many of the failing coaches we've had since Phil retired, vogel might be the most balanced and promising coach we've had. Mike brown was a workhorse but lacked strategic vision. Mda had too much vision, dogmatic, and couldnt adapt his vision to his roster. Scott was old school fundamentals but so much so he was out of touch with the modern game, and really was pretty unequipped roster wise. Luke was new school modern nba but too inexperienced and had a weak staff. Vogel seems to have a lot of the positive traits as many of those coaches with no real glaring weakness as of right now. I do believe that Vogel has the makeup and proper tools for success and I am excited to see how he maximizes the potential of this team going forward. Go lakers!

Let's just hope this coaching staff can handle all the egos paired with social media. Yhat is the only worry I have...

Vogel's glaring weakness is he's all talk right now. He needs to show he's learned from his previous stints and translate it to results, especially on the offensive side.

What worries me is that he doesn't have the personnel to implement a modern offense. Kidd/Hollins are too old school and Phil Handy is primarily for player development. The rest are either unproven or unknown.

As mentioned earlier, the lack of an offensive coordinator sticks out to where it might become costly this season. It's not a good sign when the most capable person to integrate a modern offense on the staff is a coach who learned some things during his time off (Vogel).

FWIW...

The bad: McMenamin confirmed that Kidd is the offensive coordinator, as a few of us saw coming.

The good: He says Kidd is drawing from some of what the Spurs, Warriors, and Bucks do as he designs the schemes.

This is me trying to be optimistic: 😬

Also, Hollins is in charge of the defense. Again, per McMenamin.

Smashmouth basketball returns?

"You're coming to play [the] L.A. Lakers -- you're going to get hit," Vogel said after his team finished the first of their two-a-day session. "You're going to get smashed in the mouth."

I wouldn't associate Frank's use of the term with Byron and his outdated basketball philosophies. The only thing Frank meant is that the team is going to be physical.

So we have Kidd coaching the offense, Rondo starting, and Vogel going on and on about how physical the team is going to be

It's starting to feel a lot like Byron 2.0 only this team we have a much more talented roster for our outdated coach to ruin

Hope I'm wrong but I'm feeling like the Lakers are going to regret cheaping out on Lue

Who on the roster is a “smash mouth” player?

To me I see finesse players. Not the hard working junk yard dogs needed to be as physical as Vogel is describing.

Who is setting that tone every night? Bradley? Howard? Green?

Going to be interesting to see.

Welcome to the 80’s. Some things are too far out there to believe that they are really happening.

Are you serious? I can't think of another player on the team who qualifies as "finesse" besides AD. Kuz maybe? But that's it. This team has more thsn enough players to fit the bill. This team has more inherent "toughness" than last year's version.

Can we just chill. The season will be what it is. We will finish top 4-5, but nothing will matter until 9 months from now.. Until then, why scrutinize everything? Who knows if we have a good enough roster.. who knows if The Rockets do.. who knows if The Nuggets with no 2nd star do... Every team's season will have ups and downs.. no need to go lose all hope over them.. I don't see perfect teams..

Just realized AD will be able to play the 5 nominally(still confused about this word) against the Rockets in the playoffs. AD vs Capela seems like such a mismatch for us

We'll see if that's true if we don't allow ourselves to be punked by Beverly in the 1st game this time.

Yeah I woke up with a stomach ache and I think it made me pessimistic about the team. You know they say your gut is like a second brain

It's 10 AM now and I'm feeling a lot more optimistic about the team.

STOP overanalysing everything to the death bro.

You taking the fun out of it, and I'm saying that as an immigrant. There are times when I think/know I have more Compton in me than most Californians I meet on the interwebs. Sometimes, you just gotta go SMASH! Doesn't matter if we do or we don't. This is OUR team now, for better or worse.

But we don't have any widebody "smashmouth" players either, except for maybe Jared Dudley. LeBron is still more effective in transition than in the halfcourt, and we all know he hates it when other guys get physical with him.

Personnel wise we have the players to play some type of fast break basketball. I don't see us having the kind of roster you need to slow down the pace and keep the scores between 100-105 points.

If this lakers team is top 5 on defense and average to slightly above average at the free throw line, they are the favorites. If they are top 2, it's a lock.
