Interesting that Mike Bresnahan had the Lakers finishing 4th in the rankings and the Clippers 5th

Honestly I don't take that as a slight. There are so many dangerous teams around the league who seem to be pretty even on talent (the top 8 at least). Our biggest question mark is depth as we are top heavy.

I don't know how ESPN does these power rankings though. We have highest title odds but we're 4th? It's just based on a vote of ESPN "reporters". It's no different than putting up a poll on a message board. They aren't experts.

Quote:
Note: These rankings are based on where voters -- more than 40 ESPN NBA reporters, insiders and editors -- think teams belong heading into the 2019-20 season. Title odds for 2019-20 were provided by Caesars Sportsbook. ESPN.com's Malika Andrews, Tim Bontemps, Nick Friedell, Andrew Lopez, Tim MacMahon and Royce Young contributed the following information.

If it's best team today or best season record, how can the Clippers w/o PG for a month be #1?

So this is their championship guess?

Seems reasonable. The top 7 teams look pretty interchangeable before the season starts.

Fair list. You can make the argument for any of those teams being top 3 for the regular season. Anyone of those teams is capable of getting the 1 seed, then we see playoff matchups.

Sounds weird to say Boston can get the 1 seed, but they can. They had locker room issues last year and the east still has more bad teams than west.

1. I think the Bucks are going to miss Malcolm. But being the east, I can see them having a pretty good record.
2. I'm always on the fence with MikeC. Sometimes I think he's underrated, and sometimes I think he's overrated. I'd be shocked if they had the best record in the west this year though.
3. Denver has depth and they have the mile high. They'll probably be up there record-wise.
4. The Lakers having a top 3 record in the west is something I'm hoping for.

The downgrade from Horford to Kanter is such a big blow for Boston and they still have a minutes logjam with Smart, Brown, Tatum, and White Power. I think Kemba will have a strong season, but the rest of the roster will keep them from being more than a second round playoff out.

Going from Kyrie and Horford to Kemba and Kanter is like going from Kawhi and Duncan to Derozan and LMA. Sure the chemistry might be better but you typically don't win more games with less talent.

No doubt, as currently constructed 2nd round ceiling in the playoffs.

I could see them pulling an Atlanta Hawks from a few years back and racking up regular season wins.

The top three seem beatable, actually. What a difference 6 months makes?

They really need one of their young bigs to step up to make it happen, imo, because a Kemba/Kanter PnR defense is going to get shredded nightly. I actually like the long-term potential of Robert Williams and Grant Williams for the Celtics, but it feels a little too early for those guys.

This was published on Wednesday, and the George injury was announced on Monday.

My guess is they collected the votes from their 40 analysts last week before the George injury was announced.

Vegas odds also have the Lakers 4th behind the Bucks, Clippers and 76ers.

Yeah that’s true. Kemba/Kanter on defense has potential to be disastrous. I would not be surprised if Kanter became the scapegoat and got benched. They aren’t going to bench Kemba.

It just shows you how little these "expert" reporters really know about all the teams. None of them have the time or probably even interest in watching the majority of the games so they catch 1 or 2 and probably just see highlights of the others and outside of BREAKING NEWS do not know a lot of the smaller tid bits about most teams.

Since a few weeks into the off season it was already known that George would very likely miss the pre-season at least with his second shoulder surgery and come into the season very rusty.

Now he is going to miss at least 7-8 games and come back probably rusty and not in game shape. You already have Kawhi who can't play too many games or else he'll like like he did in the finals before the playoffs even start. If they have to let Kawhi sit any games in October or when George just comes back it is a strong possibility any team in the NBA can beat them.

Personally, I love the Lakers getting overlooked by some of the media and not just being picked as favorites like the Clippers are for some reason. I think it is legitimately fueling Lebron, AD and the rest of the guys wanting to prove everyone wrong. Like most have said, as far as the regular season goes the top 6 or so teams could be playing musical chairs all season.

Once the playoffs roll around though and the rotations shrink I will take the Lakers if healthy against anyone this season.

#4 is fine, keeps the expectations low and will lite a fire under them to prove the doubters wrong...

Let's go ahead and play the season out and see how their predictions work out...

I always thought he was a celtics fan, but this is a tweet from 2013.

@patcoyne28 Haven't been a Boston fan in, literally, years.

4th in the power rankings? No problem. I'd be way more annoyed if the media was hyping my team up to ridiculous proportions in a wide open league.
