Refuse to Lose... It sure is nice watching a team that looks like they’ve been there.

Down 9, heading into the fourth on the road, the Lakers put the ball into LeBron’s hands to floor general down the stretch. He and AD would take turns reeling in the Mavs on offense while the team locked down on D (holding the Mavs to just 18 in the fourth).

“He took over late in the fourth,” Anthony Davis said of LeBron. “DG hit a hell of a shot, big time shot. Coach Vogel drew up a hell of a play. We just tried to stay poised.”

And stay poised, they did.

Down 3 with 6 seconds left in regulation, LeBron attacked from the left wing, lured the bigman to help while we screened on the weakside. Green took the kickout pass in the corner, pumped once then swished the clutch three over the challenge to send it to overtime. That’s how you execute when you need it.

In OT, it was more of our dynamic duo as LeBron found AD twice for dunks, then scored an And-1 himself over Doncic. They’d take turns. Davis in the post for a score, then LeBron, then LeBron, then LeBron to close.

LBJ would finish the night with 39 points, 16 assists, 12 boards and 4 steals, looking every bit like LeBron James.

“No one panicked,” Vogel said. “Everybody just stayed the course and stuck to what we do, what we know works.”

Dallas is a strong team. They had their crowd in it all night. They hit clutch shots. The Lakers just imposed their will to wrestle the 119-110 win from them.

LeBron -- -- That fourth quarter changing of ends off a Mavs turnover where LeBron went coast-to-coast for the two-handed jam….dude. It was just 2 points but it forced a Mavs timeout from sheer badassery. Wow. I can’t imagine what that’s like to witness as an opponent. Sometimes you must feel helpless. He got going to the rim with some speed and muscle early on in this one. In the second quarter, he was able to get some straight line drives against smaller defenders, not bringing over anyone to set screens (where help could come over or they could go under the screen). He’d finish the first half with a steady 14 points on 5-9 shooting and 6 assists with just 1 turnover. When you then combine that rim attack with his perimeter game (he’d hit four threes tonight), you get full LeBron activated. Look out. In the fourth, we put the ball in his hands to orchestrate. With the pressure on, you feel a little reassured having him on your side. He and AD took turns working and resting. At times, LeBron ran the clock a little too much, but it’s still a work in progress. He executed that last play of regulation to perfection, drawing the D and finding Green open. In overtime, he just took over. A couple superb setups for AD, then he called his number getting Doncic switching on him for an And-1. Really, like seeing him and Bradley working that guard screen action to get the mismatch he wants. He chewed the Mavs up in OT, staggering them early and keeping his foot on their throat until the end. Love the improved freethrow shooting early on this season. He even got some M-V-P chants by Laker fans at the end of the game. The Stats: He scored 39 points on 13-23 shooting (4-9 from three, 9-11 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 16 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a +15.

Davis -- : -- You do a little double take at the point total in this game. He ended up with 31 and it just sort of slowly, steadily got there. He wasn’t getting to the line in this one. The law of averages had to correct the freethrow situation in this game, allowing him to just go 1-2 on the night. You knew that was coming, right? It was a slower start than usual, just 7 points on 3-9 shooting in the first quarter of this one, where he missed a couple of threes and some iso’s. That perimeter shot was looking awful as he went 0-5 from three in the game. Still, he made a bigtime clutch step-back 17-footer from the left wing with 1:20 left. We don’t have a lot in our playbook right now, so we the pressure was on, it was just dumping the ball to him and letting him go to work. We are building that playbook up, but it will take time. The first play of the game was a lob set up for him as LeBron came off the stagger screens and threw it up to him for the easy one. He also had another lob from Bradley in transition as AD changed ends well that was a highlight. He changes ends fast and catches opponents off guard. That happened in OT when LeBron zipped a pass ahead to him after an inbounds for a dunk. I need to mention some of his play on the defensive end. There was one play in OT where probably only he makes. He recovered on KP in the middle of the lane to challenge what looked like it was going to be an easy make. He forced that miss, then bounced back up to battle in a crowd and secure the defensive board. Clutch stop. This team is going to have a lot of those with him out there. The Lakers outscored the Mavs 43-25 in the fourth and overtime behind that tough AD/Howard duo defensively. Love it. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 15-28 shooting (0-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 43 minutes. He was a +12.

Green -- -- In the second half and OT, he had 12 of his 14 points. None bigger than that clutch corner three to tie the game up. I love that we can threaten something with AD/LeBron but have a guy who can trust to enhance that just by spotting up and being that dependable vet shooter. Kind of a tale of two halves for Green tonight. He had a little foul trouble early and had the team-low -15 in the first half. This was a result of that typical poor start we got off to, then later Green coming in to try to give us some shooting and not being able to make anything happen there. Just 2 points in the first half on 1-4 shooting before he he went 4-5 in the second half. Glad he hit that clutch three (he also hit a big one in transition earlier to tie the game). But glad he hit it because he left his man on a play before that to give up a three. He wasn’t supposed to get sucked in on that on D and it nearly cost us. He was just setting the stage for the team needing some heroics. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +8.

McGee -- -- The Lakers got off to another poor start, trailing 11-2 after 3 minutes. This is officially a trend. During his first 5 minutes, he gave up a couple fouls for 5 points, didn’t box out for another 2 points on a putback and he left his man open for a three. Vogel didn’t bring him back in the first half. He was better in the second half, but man, if we aren’t going to start Dwight, he really needs to pick it up. He’s got Dwight clearly outplaying him and now Kuzma breathing down his neck. Also don’t like that McGee had just 2 rebounds in this game. We got badly outrebounded at times. He’s just got to be more active. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +1.

Bradley -- -- He had the Doncic matchup from start to finish. Bradley got into him with pressure early and did fairly well just keeping him in check in the first half. Doncic, of course, is a great player and still went for a triple-double, but shot just 10-23 with 6 turnovers. Some of the defense behind Bradley on help rotations was a little weak at times and Doncic orchestrated the offense well. Offensively, Bradley was rushing some midrange shots and went a poor 2-7 in the first half. He did have a couple of excellent assists, one to Kuzma diving for a layup and the other a half-court lob to AD on the break, putting the ball perfectly over the D and at the front of the rim. In the second half, he got out in transition for multiple layups. Lakers need more of that. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-12 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +11.

Kuzma -- -- He’s on a 20-minute restriction right now. Probably for the best anyway as he didn’t look great. He came in the game midway through the first quarter for McGee as we slid AD over the to the C spot. He matched up with Porzingis, but Kuz got his second foul on him forcing KP to sit. Kuzma gives the Lakers a little more speed offensively, either changing ends or cutting. He had a nice dive when his man turned his head in the first half and Bradley bounced to him for the layup. Both he and Caruso were the only ones with a positive in the +/- in the first half, but Kuzma wasn’t really impacting things. In the third quarter, we got worked as Kuz and AD missed threes and didn’t get any lockdown action on D. It may be a 5-out offense, but if the two of them go 0-9 from three like they did tonight...not much of an offense at all. Kuzma later got a little action going to the rim and was able to manufacture some points early in the fourth. It will likely be a few games before he shakes off the rust. The team needs to get used to him, as well. So as he gets up to speed we’ll go easy on him with critiques after the long layoff without being able to play hoop. He said his conditioning and legs weren’t there. “Certain points I got tired, I definitely felt it sinking in the ground but that’s expected with two practices and then play,” Kuzma said. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (0-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -6.

Howard -- -- “To have that kind of impact on the game with one shot, I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Vogel said. Dwight has been playing like our version of Ben Wallace. Locking up the middle, setting hard screens, getting putbacks, knocking guys down in loose balls, controlling the defensive glass and making plays defensively over and over again. That big shot to tie it up, look at Dwight on that hammer screen. I’m not sure what kind of screen technique that was, but it was a vet play, knowing the refs aren’t going to call you. He pretty much reached out and held the defender for a couple beats to help free up Green for the pass. You’ve got to have a three on that play, so it’s do or die on that screen in order for LeBron to make that pass. Well done, Dwight. Vogel said afterword that the Lakers big like up with AD/LeBron has been our best. With that working for us, we altered the rotation tonight with Kuzma returning. So instead of having Dwight, Caruso and AD out there in the third mixing things up defensively, we had Kuzma in his spot. We slipped a bit as a result. But we had Dwight for the entire fourth and OT as that unit was getting it done as usual. Early in the game, Dwight had to matchup with Boban, so he was busy trying to muscle him early to keep him out of the paint. We didn’t have to battle with that in the second half (they didn’t do a good job attacking it offensively in the first half). Just another great, difference making game by Dwight to close this one. If there’s an area that has been a little annoying with some consistency from Dwight, it’s been his fouling with seconds left on the clock. He did that again in this one. Feels like that’s about the third time so far this season. Minor scratch on the record with how much impact he’s giving. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +8.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He airballed a 7-footer in the first half (good thing he was on the road because I could hear the groans from Laker fans on that one). He also telegraphed an awful cross-court pass (Laker fans everywhere yelling at their TVs on that one). A couple misses to start the fourth and he’s back in the doghouse with fans. He’s been playing better, but a lot of nothing in his 21 minutes tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +0.

Caruso -- -- Vogel brought Caruso in for LeBron in the first quarter of this one. The Lakers went on a run with some help from his defense during that stretch. Note, he’s now ahead of Daniels and Cook in the rotation. Early in the fourth, we saw Caruso attack the rim and hammer on a Mavs big. “That was special,” LeBron said afterward. I think that’s his first throwdown on someone this season. That’s the AC I want to see more of. A couple of very decisive attacks at the rim. There’s been some hesitation at times in the preseason. None of that tonight. Late in the game, we had some offense/defense subs where we sat Dwight. Interestingly, we brought Caruso in for him. Coaches are trusting him more. Love to see it. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 rebounds, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -3.

Daniels -- -- He was awful in his first half stint. He missed a few threes and a fade and was playing a bit soft on D. After ballwatching and giving up a layup, Daniels forced Vogel to call a timeout. Vogel still didn’t remove him. We got burned shortly later after he missed another shot then gave up a wide open three getting lost again. The Lakers were down 11, losing momentum to the Mavs bench. Step backwards for him tonight on the road. Role players will do that to ya. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 assist and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -4.

Cook -- -- Even though it was just 9 minutes, Daniels got way too much run in this one with as badly as he was playing on both ends. Cook should have gotten in a little sooner. I mean if you want a shooter that will struggle on D. It was pretty clear, Daniels wasn’t going to be a shooter tonight. Cook played just 3 minutes and didn’t have anything positive/negative worth reporting. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score in 4 minutes. He was a +3.

Vogel -- -- Timeout after falling behind 11-2 after just 3 minutes. It’s pretty much an expected outcome right now. Turnover out of the timeout on the ATO… McGee finally sat for Kuzma after 5 minutes, Lakers down 18-7. A lot of scoring seemed to be at the expense of McGee… They trailed 20-7 when KCP came in for Green… Caruso in for LeBron down 8 with 3:42 left. So we have AD, Kuzma, Caruso, Bradley and KCP… A 12-2 run cut the Mavs lead to 4, forcing a timeout. Some good D by Caruso helping in the middle of that… Howard, AD, Caruso, Daniels, KCP lineup… The Lakers trailed 25-20 after the first quarter… To start the second quarter he went with a Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, KCP, Daniels lineup… They fell back by 10 as Daniels was useless on both ends, not hitting his shots and giving up scores. Team was 3-17 outside the paint at this point… Out of that timeout, they brought Green in and slid LeBron to PF… Finally, he sat Daniels after a couple more bad plays, the Lakers down 11… He went with Howard, AD, Green, Bradley, Caruso… LeBron back in for Caruso with 2:45 left down 13. So starters with Howard instead of McGee… Cook in (finally) for Howard a few seconds later down 15… Lakers trailed 58-48 at the half. Got to make shots and clean up the boards. Mavs had a 35-18 advantage on the glass, including 12 offensive… Two threes to start the third and the Lakers forced a timeout down 4… They tied it up 58-58 after 2 minutes. Lakers getting out in transition and hitting some threes this half… Lakers up 70-68 with 5:20 to play when a timeout came and we brought in Kuzma for McGee… Down 1 with 3:30, KCP/Caruso in for Green/LeBron. This is where we would normally bring in Dwight, but Kuzma is getting those minutes. Unfortunately, we had Kuzma and AD taking poor quality threes during this stretch and we had to call a timeout as the Mavs pulled ahead by 7… Down 85-76 heading into the fourth. The second unit without Dwight coughed up the lead… Dwight, Kuzma, LeBron, KCP, Caruso to start the fourth. They cut it to 6, forcing a timeout… Kuzma sat out of that for AD. (Dwight, AD, LeBron, KCP, Caruso lineup.)... KCP out for Bradley as Doncic returned a possession later, good sub, Lakers down 5… Green in for Caruso another possession later… This unit tied it up 92-92, some great D by Dwight during this stretch with the trio of LBJ, AD and Green scoring on the other end… Mavs timeout after a score by AD in the post and a dunk by LBJ in transition, Lakers up 2… Timeout down 2 with 30 seconds left after giving up a three. Green needed to stay on his man in the corner… Dwight out for offense, Caruso in… Timeout with 6 seconds left. We set up Green on the hammer action in the weakside corner to tie the game up with a three at the buzzer... Vogel started the same Dwight, AD, LeBron, Green, Bradley lineup for OT. Too much LeBron and AD for the Mavs...

Go Lakers!!!!
After dealing with kids the last few years, it's so refreshing to have guys on the roster who can keep their composure.

Gritty win. I must admit I didn't think they have the composure and will to come back a second time when they fell back 10 points after taking the lead in the 3rd. The 2nd half was wonderful again with only 52 points allowed in 29 minutes of play. I said it before and I'll say it again: Danny Green is such a weapon to have. Automatic from that corner three.

Fun times in LA again. It's been too long.

As alluded to in an earlier post, it's good to replace kids with grown-ups.
Note: Lonzo, BI and Hart (along with Zuboc in SacTown and Randle in NYC) will have good careers in the NBA. What the Lakers need are GREAT players that are ready to win RINGS!

JaVale seems to be lost in whatever Vogel has him doing - lol!

The Caruso seems to be getting a bigger and bigger audiences singing his praises with his impact on the court

Lakers are developing character traits that promises muchj success during this season.

Great job as always DB!

The Lakers are going to be a tough out in a 7 game series.

Green seems like the only reliable three point shooter right now.

Kuzma was very rusty as too be expected.

KCP needs to be much more consistent because right now he is bringing little to the table.

Our three point shooting is way too inconsistent and needs to come together on a regular basis.

The Lakers need to get off to better 1st half starts.

We are going to need last nights LeBron come playoff time!

The Mavs are for real and the road in the West is going to be very, very difficult!

Thanks DB! Good to see the Lakers leading the West!

Excellent recap as always.

Howard, Caruso, Bradley - it's great seeing the Lakers shut teams down in the late stretches of these games lately. We keep winning when that happens.

Green with the popcorn spiller of a shot. YEAH! And of course LeBron and AD - awesome games tonight.

Thanks, DB! Loving the new hybrid impressions/play-by-play summary for players. Best of both worlds.

Lakers played a pretty bad half, against a quality team, on the road, and still wind up winning the game.

Why? The defense.

In the past 7 years, a Lakers team that played offense the way the Lakers did in that 1st half, are down 20-25 points. Players would not fight on D. Heads would drop, confusion. Whatever it was.

This team fought, even though offense was off, we were missing all our open 3's at half, many shots in isolation for AD were not going in. Dwight was being handled by Marjanovic really well. Dwight was not able to make an impact in the first, but the second half and OT Dwight was huge again.

That is a sign of a legit contender. A team whose offense is not on, but they stay in the game, through D. Then they go on a run offensively and get back into it later in the game.

COACHING Battle

I thought Carlisle made a few key mistakes in this one.

1) Marjonovic was giving Dwight a lot trouble and negating his impact. They did not go to him in the 2nd. Dwight was then able to impact the game, and as the game went on Dwight just gained confidence and impact.

2) Porzingis. When Porzingis was on early on, Carlisle sent him to the bench for a long time. Then when KP got back in, he did not ever get in rhythm, and the offense was all Luka, 90% of the time. We did a great job of not leaving KP open on Luka penetration. A lot of teams are doing that, we took away KP's open 3 pointers. On the flip, Lakers kept going to AD. AD was off, and we forced a way to get him into game offensively. Dallas did the opposite. KP was hot at first, they benched him and never really set him up well again. This is coaching IMO. Great plan from game 1 of the season by Vogel to identify that he is building a 2 superstar team, inside-out basketball.

3) Trusting Dwight in crunch time. A lot of coaches would not go with a Center that can not shoot FTs or make shots from outside. Look at Dallas. They never went back to Marjanovic, because of the offense. They preferred their stretch bigs. Yet the way Dwight was able to play off AD and Lebron, and do the little things was key. I thought it was very telling that Frank showed confidence in McGee in the 2nd half again (and McGee played much better in the 2nd half stint than the 1st).

I was saying right after the season opener. A good coach who wants to win a ring sticks to a longterm plan, ahead of winning small battles. Frank is doing this with regards to his lineups, and also his planning game to game.

thanks DB. it was a great game to watch. lakers are good once more, but would have wanted an easier win. dallas also has 2 budding stars now due to the knicks, so they will help make the west playoffs absolutely insane. not sure my heart can take it.

Good points here’s another:

Remember when Dallas got the ball off a poor AD shot (I think they were up by 1) with under 2 minutes in the fourth and one of the Dallas players got tied up at half court? Dude was wrangling with two Lakers for the ball for a bit (he had possession still)no time-out was called when it should have been by Dallas and it led to a jump ball the Lakers won? They could not take the TO cuz they had only 1 left with about 1:40 to play. Lakers still had I believe 3. That was a key possession switch that led to a laker score.

That’s being smart and tactical by Vogel by not blowing timeouts left and right. Carlisle went all Luke Walton under 2 minutes.

I noticed AD not taking many 3s in the second half; that's a good sign. He's still not a good long range shooter. If the first two or three 3s don't go in, just stop. Kuz doesn't have much lift in his shots and his timing is off. I also noticed that we often have multiple shooters get ice cold in the same game; that's a problem. I think Vogel should've pulled Daniels after a couple misses and inserted Cook.

Finally, shouldn't Vlade be fired for not drafting Doncic?

Freaking Cuban... After a few crappy years, he gets Doncic, then gets porky virtually gift wrapped to him. Nauseating!

Mavs are gonna be a problem in a few years... Or less.

A couple of teams made a big mistake passing on Doncic.

It is obvious to me he is the best player in that draft, hard to believe he is only 20 years old.

We got destroyed on the boards, something they need to work on. And we saw that length can temper AD’s game. Two lessons to work on.

Ummm, the Lakers are finally fun to watch, for the first time in almost nine years. LeBron is playing at an all-time level again, AD is settling in nicely, Green has been a great pick-up, Caruso is a blast to watch and root for despite / because of looking like my dentist, Dwight is far more effective and likable than his first go-around with us, and we have a coach who for the first time in ages is stressing defense and seems to have a handle on rotations. Overall it seems like this summer has been a fantastic retooling job, which means someone should probably put VLF / Jim Buss on suicide watch.

Speak for yourself Johnny, the Lakers are fun to watch every season. Unless you are a bandwagon fan, which you seem to be.

Now that was FUN.

It's amazing the playoff intensity of both the Clips and the Mavs games this early in the season. Can't imagine how high that'll ramp up in April and May.

LBJ was superb. That full court romp was like Godzilla thru downtown Tokyo. Oh, but the passing was so crisp, too, with some needle-threading bounce passes. He really pushed the pace of this game.

AD - last game, he was the 1A; this game, the 1B. Nevertheless, a steady 31 and clutch baskets down the stretch. Only a few big men can do the crossover, step back, 18 footer.

Danny Green = clutch. I truly expect any 3 he shoots to go in, especially if there's a flyby involved.

Dwight - ok, he's won me over. Quite an attitude change. He's not demanding the shots anymore, but he's now demanding respect for the size and energy he brings.

Quality game from AC, active, screen-fighting D from AB, Kuzma getting his feet wet and the return of Binary Mamba. Great win!
