Rise of the Bench... The Lakers were floundering against the Bulls.

They gave up 65 points in the first half, the most they’ve allowed all season in a half. They gave up 11 points on second chances, another 17 points on turnovers and allowed the Bulls to shoot 54% for the half. Combine that with foul trouble for both AD and Howard, and the Lakers were behind by as many as 19 points.

As Vogel cycled into his bench late in the third quarter, the intensity and defense started to pick up. He seemed to sense it and stuck with his Howard, Kuzma, Caruso, Daniels, Cook lineup into the fourth.

Then Kyle Kuzma finally came alive. As the team rattled off a 16-0 run to start the quarter, Kuzma would score 11 points on 5-7 shooting...finally looking a little more the Kuzma we know. Dwight Howard would make his presence known with a series of huge plays (offensive board and a dunk, followed by a shot rejection and then an And-1 layup in the span of about half a minute).

Momentum swung during this stretch as the Lakers would have a 4-point and 5-point possession, outhustling the Bulls for missed freethrows. By the time, LeBron returned to the court, they had the lead.

LeBron would finish them off with his third triple-double in a row. The Lakers would take the 118-112 road win, their first win in 6 years after being down by 17 or more at the half.

Despite his domination, it was the Laker bench that turned this into their sixth straight win. Credit Vogel with sticking with that unit into the fourth instead of his usual substitutions.

LeBron -- -- Another triple-double. Third in a row. What’s crazy is being able to put those numbers while playing the kind of defense he’s playing. He’s a machine right now. He was the one constant in this game. As everyone else was up and down, LeBron was consistently doing his thing. Finally, when the rest of the team started to respond, the team reeled in the Bulls and took control. First two plays of the game tonight were him lobbing to McGee for a dunk and then LeBron hammering a dunk on his own drive. LeBron’s Lakers are in the house. LeBron had 14 points, 8 boards and 4 assists in the first half. The perimeter shot was falling. He was able to get to the rim, muscling through the defense. Down the stretch, he just started picking apart the Bull defense with the pass. They put up a stat showing through 6 games, this is the most assists LeBron has had in his career to start a season (he was leading the league with 11.2 per game prior to this game). He had 67, rest of team combined had 72. Give him another 11 tonight (the rest of the team had 15). He led the team with a +17. Defensively, a few of plays stick out. He had Markkanen trying to iso on him and rejected him. Another was just some intense pressure in the corner on his man, forcing him to fumble the ball away. There was also some good lateral movement on the perimeter to deny anything from happening. The Stats: He scored 30 points on 10-19 shooting (2-6 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +17.

Davis -- -- Apparently, he doesn’t play well in Chicago. He should note that. “They’re a good young team right now,” AD said of the Bulls. Fresh off his Player of the Week honors, he had a really poor first half, picking up 3 fouls and scoring just 4 points on 2-8 shooting. “It’s hard to get into a rhythm when you are in foul trouble,” he said. His best offensive plays, he was able to play a little bully ball, just backing his man down and dunking over him a couple of times. In the fourth quarter, his defense stepped it up, challenging layups in transition superbly. Guys can’t score over him in those situations. Later, he swished a big corner that got LeBron his triple-double. There was another exchange between them that I liked better. AD was in the post, LeBron cut for the handoff, AD gave it to him then spun to the rim and LeBron threw it up for the lob dunk. Just building that chemistry. A couple nice assists for AD tonight. One was a skip pass from the post to an open three shooter, the other a nice drive and dish to McGee waiting in that dunker to spot to finish. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-15 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4.

Green -- -- A quiet night from him. He got chased off the three line a couple of times and he turned those into running, one-handed makes off the glass from both sides of the court. He also had a nice assist to KCP after attacking baseline. So some surprisingly decent work off the dribble in a few instances tonight. He’d knock down another three in transition for his other score. When he gets his moment going forward on those breakaway threes, it just seems like he’s automatic. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +4.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He got the start for Bradley. He’d sink a three, score a layup cutting of McGee’s post-up and score another layup on an outlet. A couple of bad plays, trying to do too much on the dribble for a turnover on one of those and then getting backdoored for a score on another. Serviceable minutes, but our backups outplayed him. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -1.

McGee -- -- He was active out there tonight. He got in on some dunks offensively and some good challenges defensively. Enough good things in his game that he ended up in the positive on the +/-. Hopefully, we see continued improvement as we need bodies to keep the load off our other bigs. Offensively, he started the game with a lob throwdown off a long pass from LeBron. He picked up another bucket trialing the break to clean up a KCP missed drive. Reasonable first half despite our issues. Also a couple of nice assists in this one. He found Kuzma on a give and go and then also hit KCP cutting for a layup. Defensively, he had a couple blocks, but he also broke up a couple of lobs, as well. His mistakes are usually more noticeable than others...he had a bad one in the backcourt trying to pass to LeBron and having it picked off and turned into a three. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-4 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +1.

Kuzma -- -- “I’m kind of treating this like my preseason,” Kuzma said. He was a trainwreck early on, but you could see when the shot dropped, the confidence kicked on. He was able to put on a show for his visiting family in that fourth quarter, scoring 11 points of his points on 5-7. He picked the absolute right time to activate. We had both LeBron and AD sitting, so it was Kuzma and Howard with the bench guards taking it to the Bulls. He and LeBron did flash some of that chemistry finally. Kuzma had a dive off of LeBron’s drive and LBJ hit him for the score. He came off another pindown to take a pass and swish a 16-footer. He needed this confidence boost. Once he had it, it felt like the spacing and gaps opened up for him more. He was suddenly a little more decisive in what he wanted to do. He’s been struggling to find his role offensively and get into a groove in this first few games, but there were flashes tonight. Defensively, I actually think he’s been pretty solid. He’s staying in front of his man, closing well at times and getting some good challenges in. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-16 shooting (1-8 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +4.

Howard -- -- Wow. This version of Dwight Howard? I never want to see anything else. This is how you redeem yourself. The box score tells you nothing. In a span of 24 seconds, he ripped the souls right from the Bulls in that fourth quarter. He grabbed a missed Kuzma freethrow and dunked it back in to give the Lakers a 4-point possession. Then, on the other end, he switched on to the smaller guard, Coby White, who iso’d on him and attacked to his left. Dwight stayed with him and spiked his drive into the crowd before the two players went down. He ate that drive up, bounced up and yelled. Then, again, on the very next offensive possession, he scored an And-1 layup. Just a tone-setting stretch that put his stamp all over the game and the Lakers were on a roll. The first half of this one was a bit clunky. He picked up three fouls in the half. So we only saw the trio of Howard, AD and LeBron on the court for just a possession or so before he had to sit. Once they reunited in the fourth (after the bench had reeled the Bulls in), they put the clamps on and took control of the game. Those stretches with the three on the court are the ones I wait for every game. “His length, athleticism and communication on defense has been very good,” LeBron said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards (2 offensive), 1 block and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +4.

Caruso -- -- Vogel mentioned AC’s defense has been “exceptional.” He cranked it up in the fourth. He reached in to slap a DHO away and take it the distance for an And-1 layup against Lavine. He swiped a kickout. He then pressured Lavine on the sideline into a turnover. Off that steal and score, he got chest bumped by LeBron pretty hard. Caruso said he’s working on the technique of being able to roll off LeBron’s chest bump so he doesn’t go flying or get injured, lol. He mentioned at halftime they were showing some of the lowlights and he was a in a couple of them (possibly his two turnovers, both on bad passes). He tried to step it up in the second half to make up for that. Not a great shooting game, but a couple of those were the percentage buster types just give the ball to throw it up before the clock went off. The Stats: He finished with 7 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +2.

Daniels -- -- Just a couple of plays worth mentioning. He’d sink a three off a skip pass, his only make in the game. That’s what we want to see more of. If our superstars are drawing attention, its up to the shooters to make them pay. He’s been struggling with that on this road trip. Second play was shortly after Dwight had pulled down a missed freethrow for a score, Daniels was able to keep a missed FT alive, as well, regaining a possession in the middle of our run. The Lakers were outhustling the Bulls in this stretch. (Daniels is actually a little crafty in those offensive freethrow situations...he was holding the arm of a player on the one where Dwight got the offensive board a couple plays before.) The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -6.

Cook -- -- “I love that kid,” Vogel said of Cook. He mentioned how he tries hard and tries to do the right thing, but AC’s defense has been so strong that he’s been getting all the minutes. Cook had it going early. He had 7 points on 3-4 shooting in the first half (and gave a couple of those right back when he was picked at midcourt for a score). But that was really his only big miscue. He’d save a bucket defensively in the second half with a strip under the hoop and he’d draw an illegal screen call to get another stop. He’d knock down 3-4 from behind the arc. We need our three shooting to pick it up, so hopefully we see more of that from him. He’d sink a couple during our run in the fourth, including an And-1. We need him to find more games like this. We have a lot of untested shooters on this team. He and Green are the only ones who’ve been there and thrived under playoff pressure. “He stepped up big time,” Vogel said. Good to see with Bradley sitting out. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-9 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +14.

Dudley -- -- He came in with a minute left, Lakers up 11. I’m sure Vogel was a little tempted to bring him in during the first half when Kuzma was a mess.

Vogel -- -- As predicted, KCP slid into the starting lineup for Bradley… Score tied 15-15 when Kuzma came in for McGee after 7 minutes… Up 2 when LeBron sat for Caruso and KCP for Cook with under 4 minutes… They quickly trailed by 4 and a timeout was called… They trailed 29-24 after the first quarter. Weak close to the quarter… Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, Daniels, Caruso lineup to start the second (they would switch this up in the second half)… The Lakers were down 11, timeout after 1 minute into the quarter… After 8-0 run, largely by LeBron, they cut it to 6… AD in for LeBron with 6:49 left down 7… Quickly a couple Bulls threes and the Lakers were down 12 again. It would turn into an 11-0 run and they fell back by 15… Down 17, LeBron in to go with Howard, AD, KCP and Green… Howard picked up his third foul a possession later and we brought back in Kuzma… Then the third foul on AD, so he sat for McGee with 2:10 left down 19… They trailed 65-48 at the half. The Bulls shot 54%, Combine that with 11 second-chance points on 6 offensive boards and that’s where you get the big scoring first half… A little run by the Lakers to start the second half, but they gave it right back and were down by 18 again… Cook in for KCP, Kuzma in for McGee, Lakers down 18 with 4 minutes left… The defense started to pick up a little and they cut the lead to 10. A late three in the quarter and they trailed 93-80 going into the fourth… Vogel liked how that unit played so he kept them in. This was a key decision. He started the fourth with the same lineup he finished the previous quarter: Howard, Kuzma, Caruso, Daniels, Cook. They took the lead. Credit Vogel for sticking with that lineup… The score was 94-93 when LeBron came back in with 8:37 left for Daniels… A 16-0 start to the fourth quarter for the Lakers… Kuzma with a huge fourth, finally sat for AD, Lakers up 101-97… They had their trio of Howard, AD and LeBron in to close. They did that… After the game, Vogel mentioned how the guys talked on the bench about how they had the No. 1 defense in the league and that’s what could get them back in the game. Love that they are taking pride in that and I love that it paid off for them tonight… It’s no easy task to have a feel for your team this early in the season, but Vogel certainly seems to right now...

Thanks DB! The hustle in this game is just so reminiscent of the championship Lakers. Dwight is on another level and impacts the game so much. He can single-handedly change the course of the game with his tenacity on defense. Glad we got see the Kuzma we know who just curls to the basket effectively. I hope this boosts his confidence and his mentality on how he fits with the team.

Bends the mind a little bit to think of what this version of Dwight Howard could have accomplished alongside Kobe. If only this Dwight would have existed back then. I'm glad we've got him now.

DB - I missed the game. Really appreciate your T&R! I must have missed a fun one, particularly with Kuzma and Howard leading the Lakers back into the game with both AD and LeBron sitting? Are you kidding me? WOw.

Great result, and great recap as always! Looks like this team is developing some badass second half defense, even when the bench is on the floor.

Even though I watch the games in their entirety, I still do not feel complete without reading the wrapup from Dancing Barry. I do not want to take it for granted. DB---Thanks for everything that you do.

Indeed, it would have been a blast then if this mature attitude of his was present during those days with Kobe. Now it seems like he is all business and lets his work on the court back-up his words. He even speaks with so much poise, humility and assertiveness now than before.

Team numbers from the game

Offense
Lakers shot 45-92 from field (49%)
Lakers shot 11-33 from 3 point (33%)
Lakers had 26 assists to 15 turnovers
Lakers had 12 offensive rebounds

Defense
Lakers allowed 43-85 shooting from the field (50.6%)
Lakers allowed 14-32 on 3 pointers (44%)
Lakers forced 16 turnovers
Lakers allowed 23 free throws (Bulls made only 12)

Offense numbers look good, but do not tell the story. First half was really a struggle on both ends. Late second half was dominant. The Lakers at least wound up having a decent 3 point shooting night, but that 33 number is too high for a team like the Lakers. Shows we played lazy basketball. We did not attack the paint enough.

Defensively aside from that run late in the 4th, most of the game was poor D. Too easy for guards to get by using screens. Our defense was not locked in the first few quarters at all. Dwight and co. really locked in late in the game. Saved the team from a L. At Miami next which will be a tough one, so we needed this win.

I think a few things the Lakers showed in this one.

1) They really miss AB and need AB as a tone setter. The way he fights through screens and sticks to his man on D is big contrast to what KCP and others were doing to begin the game. Sets the tone for our D.

2) Stretch bigs and speed guards will give us some trouble. The Bulls had two stretch bigs. Similar to Dallas. We went down quite big to Dallas as well. We did eventually lock down on them, but the combination of bigs that can space the floor (or take the ball to the basket off the dribble) and speed from guards gives us trouble defensively.

3) Kuzma is the difference in this team being able to sit Lebron and AD, and give them significant rest in games. He did not play well for 2.5 games of his return. That 4th though. Yes. If he can do more of that, we will have a bench that allows Lebron and AD to rest.

Part of being a superstar is providing your team with steady, consistent dominance, especially when the rest of the team is flatout terrible. LBJ did that. We would've been down 30+ in the 1st half without him. Very impressed with his defensive energy the entire game. Hard for the rest of the team not to get inspired by their leader.

I thought Vogel was getting ready to wave the white flag when he kept both LBJ and AD on the bench to start the 4th. Props to Kuz, Cook, AC and DH for getting it together. If that unit can keep LBJ and AD on the bench until it's closing time, look out!

Kuz needs to mix up his scoring opps, fewer isos, more off ball action. Happy to see him and AC redeem themselves after playing horribly in the 1st half.

Cook looked great. He brought dribble ball movement at pg that we've been missing. I know it is because of the d he was facing, but it is a nice tool to have in the tool box.

Having he, Green and event AD be open for those corner 3's from Lebron, is going to be huge this year.
