Frank Vogel Named NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month

Quote:
Vogel led the Lakers to an NBA-best 17-2 (.895) record to begin the season, tying the team’s best 19-game start in franchise history. Los Angeles put together a conference-leading 10-game win streak to close the month, and the team’s 14 wins in November were the most by the franchise in a single month since March 2000. The Lakers averaged 112.8 points over the span, outscoring opponents by an average of 9.3 points per game.

The way he managed Lebron's minutes and AD's in the 1st half, and kept calling TOs even when we were up, to get rest. Really good management. Recall a lot of people jumping on him after the first Clippers game, as if he were a bad coach and Doc was this god of coaching. This dude is the best coach we have had since Phil. He should be our coach after the Lebron era as well. We have a guy here who does not have a huge ego, understands the game of the basketball, values both sides of the ball, and does not have a style on offense that would bias him from making fair decisions. I remember hearing him in the press conference the first day and I thought to myself this guy if he is legit is such a passionate, genuine, smart guy, he should succeed. It was like a breath of fresh air from Brown, D'Antoni, Byron, even Luke press conferences. Such a contrast.

Still has to prove it in the playoffs, but compared to what we have had the last 8 years, my god. Nice to have this. We should lock him up for a long time, and not second guess him. We need a culture in place for the next decade. This guy brings the right things, just like he did in Indiana. Only now he has made some adjustments to his offense and has an even better offense.

Love his mixing and matching of rotations and particularly his feel on who looks like they can help between Cook, Daniels, etc.

The Rondo/Lebron pairing is iffy but I get it from the strategy of giving Lebron some on court rest from bringing ball up and alleviating some of the ball handling duties.

We're a bit past the quarter poll, and just as an interesting way to look at the standings, here is order by team record shown as the coach:

1. Vogel, (LA Lakers)
2. Budz, (Milwaukee)
3. Spo, (Miami)
4. Nurse, (Toronto)
5. Stevens, (Boston)
6. Rivers, (LA Clippers)
7. Malone, (Denver)
8. Brown, (Philadelphia)
9. Carlise, (Dallas)
10. D'Antoni, (Houston)
11. McMillan, (Indiana)
12. Snyder, (Utah)

I never expected it to come together this quickly. What a job Vogel is doing, and he clearly understands defense. And, more importantly, he knows how to teach it. I don't know what happened in Orlando, but the man clearly knows defensive basketball. We clearly have a system in place. Even in extreme garbage time late tonight, you saw Dudley make a steal where the Utah player got inside with dribble penetration and thought he could just feed the big down low, but because Dudley rotated over, he got the steal. That's not by accident. It's the system.

Pelinka and company got roasted for failing to hire Ty Lue, but this coaching staff, led by Vogel, is doing a hell of a job.

It's tragic he didnt come last year. Would have been very interesting watching the youth play for a coach who knows what the hell he's doing.

That KCP back door he kept exploiting was a thing of beauty.

He reportedly spent that year away from the game modernizing his coaching so it may not be a bad thing that he didn't come last year

A legit good coaching staff mixed with 2 incredibly high iq players in Lebron and AD leading on the court is a recipe for success.

It's been a beautiful thing seeing actual real working adjustments during the game and a real system in place.

The entire culture of the Lakers just took an absolute 180 from just a year ago and only a month into the season it just feels rock solid.

Sac is actually doing better than I thought they'd do. They're the best team in Nor Cal.

Was impressed by the short segment before the Jazz game on NBA TV. It showed the Lakers practicing. That guy takes defense seriously. I wonder if Luke ever did some of those team drills. The players were listening to everything Vogel was saying. Good to have a coach like that.
