When you hear things from ADs like "football allows us to have other sports," this is what they mean.

Take #LSU. Here are profit/loss numbers from each LSU sport in the 2016-17 cycle, from my time as a beat writer.

- Football: $56M in profit
- Other sports: ~$23M in losses


@ LSU, it pays for every other sport except Men's Basketball and Baseball. Every young man or woman that gets to compete or a scholarship in swimming, tennis, soccer, golf, etc. at a major conference school needs the football program to cover the bill. Even at basketball schools like Kentucky and Duke, football dwarfs basketball in annual revenue.
