(This intro is for all those who remember the Four Horsemen. Apologies to those who weren't here then. -db)

Chapter 17: The Longest Year... The hunt for Little Larry has taken some twists and turns over the years, but this one? Wow.

You left the car on the side of the road months ago. It ran on fumes as long as it could carry you. It finally sputtered, choked and rolled silently to a halt. You looked at the long stretch of empty highway ahead. Where to now? You didn't know.

Packing water and supplies, you push ahead into the unknown. For days, weeks, you trudge on. You stay in one place for a while but keep moving ahead.

It's just you these days. You alone.

On the path you spot horseshoe tracks and follow them up a hill that seems to go on longer than you thought possible. Your legs ache, the pack digs into your shoulders and your heart pounds in your chest until you finally reach the top of that hill.

The view stops you, breathless. A cemetery blankets the hills and stretches as far as you can see. Grave after grave after grave. So many. Too many.

The tracks lead you to one grave site in particular. On its side next to the grave, a pale horse slowly breaths. You pull water from your bag, kneel down and offer it some. It sniffs the air and opens an eye. It is lifeless at first, then recognizes you the way horses do.

Life returns to her eyes and she drinks from your open hand. She grows stronger by the second. Then, finally, the pale horse rises from the dust and stands riderless before the grave site.

You step to her side and read the name etched in stone, "Death."

As you read, a small hand slips into yours and you look down. After years of searching, you didn't find the golden child -- Little Larry found you. Like the horse, life now courses through you.

You recognize the riders behind you who brought him to you -- the James Gang.

One by one, the riders cross by the grave and give it a nod. The pale horse wants to run with them, but she waits with you and Little Larry. The last rider pays his respects, then stops and turns.

"I think she's finally chosen a rider again," he says.

You look at Little Larry, and the two of you climb atop the pale horse that Death once rode.

As soon as you are on, she bolts after the gang. Thunder in her ears, the wind in her mane, she's happy to ride again and so are you. But the pale horse slows to a trot and then stops.

She turns and looks back at the grave as you pat her on the neck.

We bury our dead. We mourn. But, tonight, we pause. We pause to celebrate -- those we lost, those we still have, and those we finally found again.

And tomorrow or the next day, maybe we pause from what we're doing and we smile ... once again.

As the riders disappear over a hill, you say, “Thank you.” They can't hear you, but you say it. “Thank you.”

Someday, we will all ride together.

If you were angry after the last game, the players were, too. They came out of the gates tonight with purpose and intent. One focus tonight -- lock down the Heat.

The Lakers pulled Caruso into the starting lineup in place of Howard. They got off to a strong start, turning steals and stops into a 10-0 advantage on the break and an 8-point lead in the first quarter.

The defense dialed it up even more in the second quarter. AD in drop coverage dominating and disrupting everything in the paint. The team weaking Butler to his off hand, going into ice coverage on the other side, chasing shooters off the three line. They were communicating well and on the same page. Meanwhile, they carved up the Heat defense getting penetration for scores or kicks to shooters.

The lead grew to 30 just before the half. Vogel had the team playing defense on a string. The mistakes were few, the stops were many.

In the second half, they just kept the Heat in jail. The pace slowed, they scored just enough, but they had put the Heat into such a deep hole, it was impossible to recover. The clock ticked slowly away, the lead trimmed little by little but finally, they got it -- 106-93, the fourth win of the series, sixteenth of the playoffs and the seventeenth championship for the franchise.

“We wanted to bring something special in a dark year and this is hope,” Rob Pelinka said afterward.

It was a long, dark year. Too long. Too dark.

We needed this.

LeBron -- -- It is rare...very rare…where you have a team that doesn’t make the playoffs for several years, then not only gets back in, but wins the whole damn thing. That is all him. He’s been there, done that and this team followed. Amazing. We didn’t have to hear about “killer instinct” or things they say new teams need to learn when going into the playoffs. He had everything we possible lacked. Need scoring? Check. Need playmaking? Check. Need to push the pace? Check. Need someone to take on an opponent’s top player to get a stop? Check. Dude did it all through this playoffs. “We just want our respect. Rob wants his respect. Coach Vogel wants his respect. Our organization wants their respect. Lakers nation wants their respect. And I want my damn respect, too,” LeBron said. Some (Laker fans even) said he was washed. People criticized his defense last year when he was clearly recovering from the injury. He got his body right, kept it right and steam rolled the league as a playmaker/scorer extraordinaire. What a run. Tonight, he opened this one strong. He had 9 points, 5 boards, 3 assists in the first quarter able to get out on the break for scores or get downhill attacking seams in the half court. The rebounding in this game was sensational. Later in the game, he went into the stall ball mode offensively. Kind of early in the third, if I’m being honest. The transition opportunities slowed up. We ran clock. But offensively, he was able to pick the Heat apart when we needed it most. He took that Finals MVP. It wasn’t given. Just a beast. The basketball gods shined on him after making the right play in the last game. They shined on the team for playing tough D. And this one was never close as a result. I hope he’s greedy and wants a few more because he played at the top of the game this year. On another note, how about that leadership off the court? From before the season began he knew chemistry needed to be developed. He got the guys together early. He led them through the complete insanity and tragedy of this season. Through the challenges of the social injustice, trying to help overcome voter suppression and keep the message in front of people, he stood tall through 100 or so days in the Bubble. He kept them together, focused and not turning on each other. Then after the game, he preached needing to do the loving thing. Well done, LeBron. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 13-20 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a +18.

Davis -- -- “We didn’t let him down,” AD said of Kobe during the award ceremony. LeBron was behind him yelling “I’m like that! I’m like that!” referencing that big moment AD hit the three for the game winner this post season and ran to the team yelling “Kobe.” How many times did we hold our breaths when AD went down with some bump, bruise, twist or some other tweak. But he kept getting back up. He was amazing in these playoffs on both ends. Tonight, it wasn’t the offense. Decision making on offense early on was poor, actually, but man, defensively he was causing the Heat problems. The drop coverage plugged the paint and disrupted the Heat. The Heat were pushed off that three line and right into his lap in the paint to challenge. Anytime we can get opponents trying to score against AD, we will succeed. He got a couple fouls in the first quarter, but avoided picking up that third. The officials tagged him with a couple early in the third. His fourth foul was bogus as they weren’t calling that on the other end. He played through that for a bit, but was certainly hog-tied and not challenging like he had been or getting into battles on the offensive glass. Very similar to the other game he got into foul issues. But it didn’t matter. They were so dominant defensively because of all the ground he covers with that mobility and length. The ultimate problem for opponents to deal with. I hope I don’t have to hear the word young core again for a long time. AD is our young core -- our young core with championship experience now. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-17 shooting (0-3 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 15 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +18.

Green -- -- I’m not sure why some Laker fans completely flipped their lid over Green after the last one. We’ve got a lot of fans and they come in all shapes and sizes. He missed the shot. We put him in that position. He didn’t knock it down. It happens. He kept his head down, handled that well, stayed focused on the task and did his job tonight. Played good D. HIt threes. Got into the paint on occasion. And all that helped send the Heat packing. Third ring on three different teams for him. This damn team locked down tonight...was beautiful to see. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +5.

Caruso -- -- This guy. I remember his first game in the Summer League. It was horrible to be honest. Then he destroyed when we needed someone to step up for Lonzo. He and Kuzma helped that team roll to the Summer League champs. He worked his way through that G-League two-way contract. Improved with hard work. This summer he earned a big league contract. Tonight, he got the start in Dwight’s place. What a freaking ride. That other L.A. team tried to pretend their way to the top talking about how they were about hard work. This guy here is about hard work. And that’s why Laker fans love him. He balled defensively tonight with that start. He was rotating, disruptive and causing issues. He was setting screens, setting the table on certain sets, even tipping in his own miss between a couple of bigger Heat players. He’s a winner. I haven’t looked into it yet but feels like he’s won at every level now. Dude needs to be with this franchise a long time. Huge part of this ring. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +20.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- KCP!!! Loved his series. He starts things slow (the season, the bubble, probably even playoff series)...but once he gets dialed in and can get into his comfort zone, he was huge for this team. He had 15 points in the first half, getting out on the break and sinking a couple of threes. With he and Rondo taking it to the Heat, they busted the doors open offensively. The key for KCP scoring big usually involves breakaway opportunities and he had plenty of those. Loved this game on both ends. They were very precise on rotations and defensive scheme. He came up huge in this series. Huge. KCP helped bring LeBron. LeBron helped get AD. That turned into No. 17. KCP gets that L.A. gold card now. Always a Laker with this ring. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-13 shooting (2-7 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +8.

Kuzma -- -- He sacrificed a lot of scoring this season for the team game. It got him and the team a ring. Quiet night from Kuzma. His defensive mobility was useful, though, as the team played on a string. Still not a lot of impact scoring wise. Knowing Kuzma some of that won’t sit well as he’s the hardest critic on himself. He’ll want to improve his game, so he can contribute more. Keep working. He’s got a ring, got playoff experience and that’s gold for a young player. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +2

Rondo -- -- How sensational was he in this one? We needed playoff Rondo. He stepped up and then some. Early on he did a great job using his hips well to finish layups around Butler on drives. Just blew past him multiple times. He was slipping through the D and then finishing everything. That was destroying the Heat. He had 13 points on 6-6 shooting and 2 assists in the first half. Even while up big in the second half, he was barking orders and directing players. The intensity was high. He helped keep the team focused on possessions and schemes. We put the ball in his hands quite a bit in the fourth to orchestrate the offense while LeBron was off ball. He’d finish with 19 freaking points, hitting 3-4 from three. Damn. What a game. Second ring for Do -- one with the Celtics and one with the Lakers. Amazing. What a contributor this post season. He won them several games. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-11 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +5.

Morris -- -- This was a big pickup for the Lakers. He made the right choice coming here as it was a win-win to a ring. This was a tough series for him defensively. Offensively, he played his role. Spread the floor and hit the threes. He sank one of those tonight. He had the miscue in the last game, but this team came back pissed and focused and destroyed. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +1.

Howard -- -- I remember Dwight sitting on the bench as the Lakers celebrated the championship against his Magic team. He watched for a long time. That was a decade ago...and an up and down one at that for him. But he did something different this season. He got humble. He rejoined a franchise and fanbase that was very upset with him. He took a step back to play a role. That role was mostly off the bench. He worked his way into the starting lineup for the Finals and then we he sat this one as the team changed up their defensive schemes. He did what was needed to be done and was rewarded with a ring. I love this redemption story so much. I wish we could show him the appreciation for all of that in person. He’s got a Laker ring. He’s a made man now. As for the game, he only got in at garbage time. He hit a deep three. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three in 1 minute. He was a -4.

Cook -- -- I remember Quinn Cook wondering outside of Staples after Kobe died earlier this year. What a long time ago it sure seems. He got in for the final minute. Not a lot of run for him this post season. Teams will pick on your weaknesses and we faced some tough guards all playoffs. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three in 1 minute. He was a -4.

Dudley -- -- Glad he got a moment to take a shot in this one. Missed the three, but this man was a locker room presence in a season that needed that at a high level. What a run. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 from three in 1 minute. He was a -4.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Really, Vogel changing up the starting lineup, getting us into more drop coverage for AD to patrol the paint. This team defended the hell out of that first half. They held the Heat to just 16 points in that second quarter. “You became a defensive monster. We saw that tonight, “ Vogel said. The team bounced back. Anytime they took a punch, this team punched back. Credit the coaches. “We have a PHD in adversity,” Vogel said.

Key Substitution: He got a hell of a performance out of Rondo and ran him big minutes. Rondo with 19 points in 30 minutes. Vogel saw him balling, getting penetration for scores and there was no way he wasn’t giving him max minute tonight.

Key Stat: Let’s go with that 10-0 fastbreak in the first quarter. That came off good D, which turned into transition and the Heat were in trouble. The Lakers were hungry.

17!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever since the '80s, I've been thinking about the day this franchise would finally climb the mountain and tie the Celtics for the most championships. It's been the single purpose of our team's ownership. Amazing. So happy this day has come!!!

And if you lived through that Celtics/Lakers rivalry since then, here's how your mind works. Every single decision, move, win, loss is filtered through "does this benefit the Lakers?" or "does this impact the Celtics?" Years...decades of that.

Freaking amazing!!!!

Hell, yeah!!!

(I'm not sleeping tonight.)

To those we lost, those we still have, and those we have finally found again.

And somewhere on the side of a distant road sits a Yenko Nova just waiting for me and a gas can!

For all these years, sticking with us and keeping us together.

Damn DB, you got me crying again.

I cried when they won. I cried when I thought of Kobe missing this, tying the hated Celtics and seeing a way forward to get more.

Now I'm crying remembering the Four Horsemen and memories of Kobe, Lamar, Pau...

This has been a hell of a bad year and I'm hoping this is the first sign that things are going to turn around, for everyone.

Your writing is first rate and really appreciate all the work you put into these writeups, the good games and the bad. Thank your family too for us.

# 17 and all feels right in Laker land tonight.

Glad to be back at my roots . I registered on LG in 2004 under a different account right after pistons beat us. Shaq and Kobe were beefing and I needed to talk sports with people who felt my pain of losing and frustration of seeing shaq ask to be traded.

I even thought it was some wwf type act. Been here through so many moment and seen great contributors like the late Luca Brasi. It's great to see this place rejoicing again. Last time I remember this place so animated was when the Lakers managed to keep their tops picks.

Thank you DB for the write ups. You probably had a smile while writing this one

This is special. Kobe's death and this pandemic have made me and my family so close and tonight my 10 year old sat by my side hooting and hollering, givinf his Dad high fives as he witnessed his very first Lakers championship.

Go Lakers!

That’s what I’m talking about... the game was over at half time. No heroic last minute shots giving my heart almost more than it can take.

Next year we’re coming for you Celtics with #18.

Great win!!!
