I remember hearing the name the Lakers is based on a icebreaking ship from the Great Lakes. It doesn’t describe the Minneapolis Lakes themselves. Can anyone else please put this Lakers origin name is rest? When the name is usually described no one mentions the slang for the freighters on the Lake. |

Quote: | The nickname chosen for the team was based on the state motto, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Even though there are few lakes in Los Angeles, the nickname was retained when the team relocated there in 1960. |

There is an apocryphal story that it has something to do with ships on the Great Lakes. The problem is that Minneapolis is not on the Great Lakes. In fact, it is an inland city on a river. In a prior thread, someone claimed that some announcer spun the ship story at some point. That may have happened, but it is almost certainly not true. Here is the official version:

Behind the Name | I have heard Stu Lantz mention the Laker ice breaker ships story too. Also a member of Jack Kent Cooks family said the same thing. I don’t think it’s based on the Lakes but the ship. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_freighter |
