Just wondering - was it to create room to sign LBJ and PG13, or did we just not like him? _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

Made absolutely zero basketball sense. I feel like Magic was the kind of guy if you rubbed him the wrong way he would trade you if weren't a star.

The funny thing here is that Zubac was retained in favor of Thomas Bryant, the very same Zubac who, a year later, was dismissively traded to the Clippers for pennies on the dollar. |

From what I remember, he was waived in June 2017 i.e. Kawhi was a full year away from happening.
Meanwhile T. Bryant cost $1M per year (2017, 2 year $2M). If that $1M was a blocker to signing Kawhi in 2019, just don't resign T. Bryant in June 2019!
The simplest explanation seems to fit better; management didn't think he was a useful piece and didn't value his skill set, so got rid of him.

Because like many former greats, just because you were a great basketball player does not mean you know a damn thing about running a team. Magic made more insane blunders in just a few years than any GM has made in their entire career. He made sure he will NEVER get another shot in a FO. LeBron coming here saved that mans ass because had we not got LeBron, he idiotic decisions would have sunk us for years to come. Best thing to happen to Lakers in last few years was not LBJ, AD or the championship. It was Magic getting shown the door and hopefully never being able to touch this franchise again |

My only guess is, he wasn't happy being in the G-League, and we didn't have minutes to develop both he and Zubac. We needed a big who could hedge, and luckily the Suns bought out Chandler a few weeks in.
We lose him for nothing the following summer (July 2019) anyway. Restricted Free Agency has it's restrictions when a team is simply trying to preserve a player as an asset rather than develop him going forward. If we match his offer sheet and try to use him in a trade, he would hold a one-year NTC that prevents us from simply using him as equity, and can threaten to tie up that cap space. There would be no choice but to give him minutes, just to maintain his trade value for a year. Give me McGee and D39 any day on last year's team. |

The Lakers waived him to create an extra $700,000 in cap space.
I am not sure if we had every specific free agent target in mind. He was waived before the free agency period began, and a couple of weeks later we signed Lebron, Rondo, and the other guys on the 2018-19 team.
Given his small salary, it's safe to assume the Lakers didn't see much in him. It was a blunder. |

Youβre right. Got my timelines mixed up. The Lakers were clearing cap room for the LeBron summer. So you could say it was for Paul George. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

In hindsight we should've prioritized him over Zubac, but I understand the reasoning. Also Zu had a bit more guaranteed money, not as easy to cut. |

I had a friend on that team. He was their best player, but failed to hit some free throws that would have won them more. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.
