His defense is better than I thought. Thanks for sharing.
Yup, he's alot stronger than Danny. Perfect against guys like Kawhi and Jimmy who use their strength advantage and not pure speed to dominate. Hell, Wesley held his own physically against the strongest of them all, his own teammate Bron. I'm pretty pumped about this pickup as well as getting Schroder. _________________ "Chick lived and breathed Lakers basketball…but he was also fair and objective and called every game the way it was played."

Have we ever had father and son winning rings for the same franchise in the NBA?

DefRtg (NBA players with over 40 games played, min. 10 minutes per game):
No. 2 Wesley Matthews
No. 3 Marc Gasol
No. 9 Alex Caruso
NetRtg:
No. 4 Wesley Matthews
No. 11 Marc Gasol
No. 13 Alex Caruso
Others:
No. 19 LeBron James
No. 33 Montrezl Harrell (Green was 34, Dwight 39)
I don't see why these wouldn't remain reasonably high considering the team and how we'd use them.
Very interested in seeing how the swap of Matthews for Green plays out. Green struggled with the guys who were stronger/faster (Butler/Kawhi). That hurt us more than Green's help rotations helped in my opinion. Wes played them well. We needed to improve the D on those players and did with this. That'll be fun to watch.
I think Harrell's defense will probably surprise, as well. We won't let him get abused by bigger players...we probably have him and AD on the court for stretches. Those two cover a lot of ground on D when we scramble. Would not surprise me to see Trez's numbers go up.
Gasol probably will annoy fans because he doesn't do anything flashy on D. But if he's rolling with the starters, these numbers will be good.
You can see a theme that all three of those players, Caruso, Wes and Gasol, played for good defensive teams. They contributed, but statistically were helped by a strong defensive structure around them. Agreed, that should continue on this Lakers team (win-win).
GT pointed out Trez was used in drop coverage a lot by Doc. Could have been to cover for Lou as the defensive guard in that scenario. Vogel is more of a pull your own weight defensively kind of coach (and Schroeder is a better defender than Lou). I could see Trez playing up more and maybe even some trapping with Dennis, since both are super quick.
Goon: Wesley Matthews saw a lot of adjustments from the Lakers in the last playoffs, especially in the variations of defense. “I’m a defensive mind along with a team full of defensive minded people.” Anticipates he will be able to have in-game discussions to adjust in postseason.
You love to see it!
Imho one of our best signings. I was green with envy when I saw those other guys go for him while we went with Danny...especially at those price points.
Quote:
Ward: Wesley Matthews gets a little emotional on Kobe helping him with his Achilles injury. Says he gave him the advice he needed to get through the injury and appreciated his honestly about how hard it is to get through it.
Do it for the Mamba again!

If Matthews has a good year with us I’m all for giving him a 2-3 year deal, we got a great medical staff to help him stay healthy, Korver still shoots lights out in his late 30’s.

Probably not the best thread for this, but yeah, I think Trez takes a lot strays because of Doc and Lou. Trez's numbers without Lou on the floor are strong. Lou Will is the guy teams hunt over and over. So you can try to defend that with a drop, but really you probably just need to be aggressive and blitz to get the ball out of there and away from attacking Lou. Then you use Trez's ability to cover ground to help in the scramble. But I imagine Doc ran that drop coverage all the time even without Lou in the equation. That was just their scheme.
Trez is at his best on the move, rotating and coming in to draw the charge, etc. Having him aggressively playing those screens and then on the move to recover or rotate? Really, really curious to see how he and AD look together with how much ground they cover defensively.
And pulling this back to Wes... he and Schroder are an upgrade in that point of attack D for whom they are replacing (Green/Rondo). Ahhhhh. Going to be fun to see how this comes together. It's going to be different, but lots of potential on D.
Seems like this signing is not being talked about, but this one is a big pickup IMO.

Today on NBA radio they said he was the best signing we had. Well one of the host said it. _________________ Coach Vogel, Kidd, Hollins
