You don’t think Gasol is better offensively? Forget the points, how many times has he hit Lebron on a cut for layup/dunk or set great screens? |
Some thoughts here. Outside of eating regular season minutes like McGee, all that matters here is really the playoff offense.
First, yes, I think he's probably the best screen setter of the bunch. Dwight last year stuck guys good...but he was called *at least* once a game for an offensive foul/turnover. Someone could probably look up the stats here, but it sure feels like we're keeping a possession more per game with Gasol as a screen setter. In any event, offensively there are some make or break things I think.
The key for Gasol is where his defender is when he's on the perimeter. There are two scenarios here: When the ball is in his hands, they are right on top of him. Last year, that is something neither of our C's gave us. When the ball is not in his hands, it depends on the team, some defenders roam a little, some don't. We don't have him rolling a lot, but he can also contract the D that way to open the perimeter (especially as a short roll passer). But this hasn't really been our M.O. with any consistency yet this season.
Now we have to compare that to the vertical spacing our bigs gave us last year. In the regular season, it was decent. They could contract on the roll and hanging in the dunker spots. In the playoffs, it was not a thing. We didn't play the lob game, teams sort of stayed with them under the hoop, but clogged the paint more than the regular season. This took them out generally as a threat other than what they could do with offensive boards. In the end, they really didn't give us much and were a liability on the other end except for really Denver/Dwight.
In the playoffs this year, either Gasol needs to be hitting his shot when he's out there or we need to have more set plays with the ball in his hand to pass. I don't think anyone would argue he isn't a great passer (consistently superior advanced stats back that up as one of the best in the league). I'm way more confident in Gasol as a passer that can space the floor that way. That's not going anywhere come playoff time.
IF we run a higher number of possessions and actions with the ball in his hands when he's on the floor, I think for sure he can be a much stronger offensive player than either of our guys last season come playoff times. He's also a zone buster in the middle of the zone should we see that happen like we did at times.
IF we're going to rely on him as more of shooter to space the floor...we better hope he gets on a hot streak, because in the playoffs his reluctance to shoot and if he slumps, I think that hurts us a lot. Teams will adjust to that. Ultimately, it won't be as sustainable as going with Kieff or a smaller player whose reps pull defenders closer.
Right now to me, we aren't using him anywhere near as effectively as we can. Some games he's way better. Some games he gets lost when we don't play with purpose. Last year, when that happened at least our bigs could put pressure on the offensive glass and rim, Gasol isn't doing that. Our playbook should only increase as the season goes along and Gasol should only improve offensively. We've only got a very small handful of plays we run him in. When that playbook doubles? Triples as the season goes along? If used right, I don't think there should be any doubt that he's way better offensively. |

Sounds like we’re banking on playoff Gasol ala playoff Rondo... diff games do be played during playoff, I hope you’re right mod.
Do you think we should still go get a big or you think we good?

Sigh, we will get a 15 roster spot big, whether is Dedmon, PGasol, even Miles Plumbee whenever he is, just to calm the posters. Anyone of them will play the same amount of time Kostas plays. |

What is with the “sigh” comment? I’ve seen it several times now. A new trend?
Maybe just me, but I’m finding it disrespectful for a discussion board.
As to the actual opinions. I think most wanting to add a center realize it is a luxury specific roster spot that will see limited playing time when all is going well. The suggestion is for when things are not going to plan.
I also wonder how many dismissive of the center situation are commenting the most about the “historically short off-season” and “resting” players?
Another trend? |

He just needs to shoot better from 3. It's really that simple.
Last year he shot 38%. This year 31%. He can, I expect he will, improve his % from deep. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

Not really. I’m banking on AD and Lebron deciding to not (bleep) around any more and carrying the team like they did last season while Marc plays token minutes except when his big body defense helps against guys like Jokic. Basically, exactly the role McGee had last season in the playoffs, except Marc has a chance of contributing while McGee did precisely nothing beyond celebrate on the sidelines. If Marc has a playoff Rondo like resurgence like Rondo did, then awesome! But otherwise whatever. He can be big body defender like Dwight was last season with different weaknesses and strengths who spends most of his time on the bench. |

Frank Vogel himself said that the lakers need to improve on paint defence and rim protection. Not exactly a great endorsement of the starting center... |

Gasol has become the new Derek Fisher.....the guy who puts up (bleep) stats and still finds a way to make his way into the starting lineup. |

Marc was good today. He was horrific along with the rest of the starters in the first quarter, but when he got back in in the second half he played well defensively and even hit a couple of rare threes. |

Would love for him to attempt about 4-5 3s a game... Just have to keep the defense guessing make or miss. |

Been a bust so far. We win despite him. He did play better last night. Hope he wakes up. I have no idea how he still starts. _________________ "I bought the Lakers so I could beat the Celtics" - Dr. Jerry Buss |

Good game - several nice passes, made some important threes during the comeback. Thought he also helped anchor the D in the 3rd qtr. |

Interesting keeping an eye on him and Boogie and who will have a better season.
Both currently playing a little under 20 minutes a game with similar %'s. Boogie with 13/12/3 in 9 games as a starter with much higher usage % and w/o the great defensive feel Gasol has. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.'
