Week 12

Quote:
5. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 25-13
Previous ranking: 4

L.A. came back from a 12-point deficit to beat a Pacers team that came into the night having lost five out of six games. "Teams are executing well against us. It doesn't matter the record," LeBron James said after the game. He's right. The defending champions will continue to have a target on their backs, even while missing two starters in Anthony Davis (right leg) and Marc Gasol (health and safety protocols). -- McMenamin

This week: @GSW, MIN, CHA, ATL, @PHX

Week 13

Quote:
7. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 28-15
Previous ranking: 5

The defending champions started Markieff Morris, Wesley Matthews, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Kyle Kuzma and Dennis Schroder on Sunday against the Suns, ending their weekend with back-to-back losses. Times are tough for the Lakers, with LeBron James out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain, Anthony Davis (calf strain and tendinosis) sidelined at least another week and Marc Gasol still working to get his wind back after missing a couple of weeks because of health and safety protocols. "These challenges strengthen you throughout the course of a season ... and will benefit you come playoff time," head coach Frank Vogel said. -- McMenamin

This week: @NOP, PHI, CLE, ORL

Week 14

Quote:
8. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 30-17
Previous ranking: 7

It was a terrible week for L.A. -- LeBron James suffered a high ankle sprain; the team went on a four-game skid; the front office struck out on a trade for Kyle Lowry which revealed that things aren't going so smoothly with Dennis Schroder, the Lakers' supposed point guard of the future -- but it ended with some great news for the franchise. Andre Drummond, perhaps the best player to hit the buyout market this March, picked the Lakers. When James and Anthony Davis return from their injuries, Drummond could be the difference in getting L.A. back up the mountain this postseason. -- McMenamin

Key additions: Andre Drummond
Key departures: Damian Jones

This week: MIL, @SAC, @LAC

Week 15

Quote:
8. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 31-19
Previous ranking: 8

The Lakers' loss to the Clippers dropped them to No. 5 in the Western Conference standings with a five-game East Coast trip beginning against Toronto on Tuesday. It seems like forever ago, but L.A. was 21-6 in mid-February before injuries took hold. The Lakers' latest acquisition, Andre Drummond, couldn't even make it through one half healthy, losing a toenail in his first game with the franchise. -- McMenamin

Week 16

Quote:
8. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 33-20
Previous ranking: 8

"Defensive scrappiness and the offensive confidence," Lakers coach Frank Vogel said after L.A.'s 25-point win in Brooklyn without LeBron James and Anthony Davis. "That's been the formula." With the Lakers' big two finally nearing a return, there's hope for the purple and gold that they've figured out a way to stay afloat and avoid the dreaded play-in scenario to begin their repeat bid. -- McMenamin

Week 17

Quote:
7. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 35-22
Previous ranking: 8

In June 2019, during an appearance on ESPN's First Take, Snoop Dogg dropped bars that didn't make the iTunes charts but sounded sweet to the ears of Lakers' fans. "AD is on the way," he sang, as a guest on the set. It's a tune that Lakers Nation will want to punch into the jukebox this week as Anthony Davis is primed to return from a two-month hiatus while recovering from a calf strain and tendinosis in his right leg. -- McMenamin

Week 18

Quote:
8. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 35-25
Previous ranking: 7

Anthony Davis' return didn't stop the bleeding for the Lakers, as L.A. went 0-2 in Davis' first two games back from injury against the Mavericks. Making matters worse, the losses came against a Dallas team nipping on the Lakers' heels in the standings, as L.A. now holds just a 1½-game advantage over the Mavs for the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference standings. -- McMenamin

Week 19

Quote:
9. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 36-28
Previous ranking: 8

The defending champs are currently in crisis mode. The return of Anthony Davis and LeBron James from injuries hasn't helped L.A. build off the momentum the team was able to muster while the stars were sidelined. With eight games left, the Lakers are in real danger of falling to the play-in tournament, where their repeat hopes could be dashed in one or two games before the playoffs even begin. -- McMenamin

Week 20

Quote:
11. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 38-30
Previous ranking: 9

Anthony Davis looked as good as he has looked all season -- even better than he did before his right leg injuries -- in games against the Blazers and Suns to end the week. While L.A. lost a close one to Portland, Davis still put up 36 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and a block. Two nights later, in a dominating win over Phoenix, Davis notched 42 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, with three blocks and three steals, becoming the first player in franchise history with such a stat line. With LeBron James and Dennis Schroder both expected back on the court sometime this week, the Lakers might have a postseason run left in them yet. -- McMenamin
